This is utter bullshit. To be quite honest emo doesn't even exist. People are so fucking obsessed the whole emo fad, they just love to label things its getting out of control. It only really kicked off in New Zealand last year sometime and now everythings emo it seems! It's pathetic. This wouldn't be so bad if the word didn't have negative connotations attached to it. I am a huge MCR fan and they have stated many times that they aren't emo so iI don't see why people can't just drop it? Well lets just see if it's actually true...

I remember back in the day when rock music wasn't as mainstream or popular as it is now when you'd feel a sense of kinship or mutual respect for someone else who might be wearing a 'mosher' chain or a metallica shirt or something. But these days there's none of that...the scene is so big now that people even feel the need to attack each other for liking a certain type of rock music or wearing a certain style of clothing.

It's really a sad thing to see. Metal, emo, punk, whatever...does it really matter if people like it or not? Life's too short to spend it hating each other for something as trivial as someone else's musical tastes. The whole 'say no to emo' chanting thing at Download was pathetic. I think that this anti-emo stuff is driven by people my age (i.e. 27+) who saw the better bands quite a few years back and can't undertsand how it's come to the point where bands like MCR seem to be dominating. I don't mean to diss MCR or their fans, but it's simply an issue of one generation replacing another (that's not to say I understand the appeal of MCR to today's generation, but then no one undertstood NIN/Ministry/etc when I was into it (the era when you REALLY got hassle from chavs),

I'm disappointed with Dave Grohl... he has evidently never listened to those bands and so he's just being presumptuous.

People just show themselves up as stupid when they label bands like Panic at the Disco as emo. Just because they wear make up. (Brendon Flowers did this - then later apologised as he hadn't actually bothered listening to them, and realised they were actually musically talented, lyrically talented, and weren't remotely "emo"). Panic's lyrics are pratically fairytale/pantomime stories, and their music sounds like a mixture of indie, rock, dance and cabaret. How is any of that emo? I don't care if people slate them because they've listened to them and don't like them, but saying all that crap about them being "emo" and partial to crying and writing songs about killing themselves and all that other stuff, is just so ignorant. Ooooh maybe we can start labelling The Killers as emo, since they wear makeup and funny clothes and have lyrics which whine about relationships with girls. BLAH.
Fall Out Boy may have a couple of "emo" songs, but their lyricist is a genuine depressive, so that kinda explains it!! As for MCR... anything after the 1st album is pretty much the opposite message - don't let life get you down, fight back against people who criticise you, be proud of who you are, etc etc.

What's the point in even writing this... "emo" in the context that it's used now days isn't even what emo actually is. It's just a term that's convenient for stupid people to throw around at bands they dont like as an "insult". And they probably listen to total utter shite like Bloc Party and Arctic Monkeys anyway, who's musical and lyrical talent could be contained within a matchbox.

Emo does not refer to "emotional". That is where 99% of people are wrong, and why emo has come to mean something else.

Anger isnt the only emotion. Supposing we change the meaning of emo to emotional, singing about girls IS emotion. Love is an emotion. So is happiness. So EVERY song in existence pretty much is emo.

Emo has just as much staying power as metal. The fashion might well die out, but there will always be "sing a long" rock songs. The difference is, whether its re-labelled as indie or pop or pop punk, emo will always be popular (in the mainstream/bordering on sense. Metal will always be less popular, because it doesn't appeal to a lot of the population anyway, and lots of alternative people can't relate to lyrics about fighting, blood, and the like. But then again, there are some metal bands, eg Stone Sour, who do have some more thought provoking lyrics. But they are usually EMOTIONAL and also ANGRY - prime emo then!!

You see why this argument is pointless, stupid, and frankly, irrelevant as no one has a clue what theyre talking about.

Ok I'm an emo hater who owns an emo forum (don't ask, long story), and I have to say, that is the funniest thing I've heard in days. :)

If you take it seriously, your obviously not a fan of music, look at all the films parodying metal and its fans; Spinal Tap, Waynes World and Airheads to name a few, not to mention all the parody metal songs.

Emo is not some untouchable genre, it will get made fun of and the band in question will only lose fans, that probably think Kurt Cobain was justified in killing himself (and the entire grunge genre in the process).

Who gives a fuck if your in a band and another shit band likes you, it doesn't matter if you don't like them, who cares if they like you, refuse to tour with them, slate them, ignore them.

Who gives a fuck if a fan of another band likes both your band and another band you don't like. All that matters is they like your band or if they hate you slating the other band that much they don't like either band, bands like Foo Fighters and MCR don't give a shit about how many fans they have really, they don't care about them all personally, the main reason for a corporate band is to get sales.

If you didn't care that much about sales, and you were interested in making music and having fans you'd do what The Libertines did and release all your music for free on the Internet and people would have a choice to pay for it or buy it. If a band cared about their fans they'd spend time meeting as many of them as possible and invite them into their own houses, or go round their fans houses and play gigs for them there. I don't see MCR or Foo Fighters doing that.

Back to the point;
If a fan stops liking Foo Fighters because Foo Fighters slate MCR its not going to matter to Foo Fighters and Vice Versa for a MCR fan.

I don't think Dave Grohl was being vicious in his take on the Emo genre. He's generally a high-spirited person who takes alot of pride in his sense of humour. Look at early Foo's, Nirvana - predominantly in interviews and at concerts, then there's Tenacious D and his relationship with The White Stripes and Eagles of Death Metal.

Noble views, though not always the case, I actually have a reason for hating emo and its fans, well aside from the whole genre seeming to be derivative and pointless.
