Dir En Grey love the UK!

After two sold out London shows last Wednesday and Thursday, Japanese rockers Dir En Grey are overjoyed at how well they've been received in the UK.

"Genuinely, I am so happy to have made our first UK shows a reality," guitarist Kaoru told Kerrang! "We've been hoping to play in the UK for a long time. To be honest, I expected a mixed reaction from the crowds, as people in the big cities are usually very harsh towards newcomers in the scene. But, we are so impressed to see positive reactions from the crowds. It was very surprising for us that there were so many fans who were waiting for us some days before the show, and spending hours to come from other cities."

Despite both shows selling out in advance, the queue for Wednesday night's show at the Islington Academy started on MONDAY MORNING, with the majority of the queue joining on Tuesday evening to ensure they could be close to the front. The chants for Dir en grey started well before show time, with fans screaming and shrieking as the band took the stage until well into their set. A number of fans became so overwhelmed they had to be treated by Islington Academy medics.

"I didn't expect we would sell out the first show, and I never thought the second show would also sell out," Kaoru continues. "We all were surprised. It's really an honour to play in front of such overflowing audience in the country even though this is our first time here."

Many fans could not get into the shows to see them due to the overwhelming demand. On their plans to return to the UK, Kaoru had this to say:

"Honestly, no plans officially decided yet. But many people involved and fans told us we should come back as soon as possible as well as we ourselves hope so. At the moment I cannot tell you any specific plan, but we will try not to keep UK fans waiting for us for a long time."

The band's new album, 'The Marrow Of A Bone', is out now on Gan-Shin Records.

Dir en grey should get the award for "Best International Newcomer"!!!
They’ve become so big over in the UK in just a few weeks!! They deserve to get something. Plus, getting so well known without any publicity whatsoever, thats an amazing achievement!!!!
I've listened to Jrock / Jpop for a while now, and Dir en grey our the only Japanese band i know to get so big in the UK. The Gazette are not far behind them.. playing their first UK show on October 27th! But Dir en grey deffinatly deserve an award for being the UK's best international newcomer. It just fits perfectly xP!!!

Dir en grey's UK shows were AMAZING!! I hope theres a review about there shows in this weeks Kerrang! And i hope you start to cover more International bands in the future...

Thanx! xxx

I've been listening to this band for the past five years, and their live shows last week were amzing and well worth the wait.

I hope they come back soon. Its about time to get their vids on kerrang.

Dir en grey were truely amazing at the London shows! I really hope they come again soon :D

Would someone like to tell just why Dir en grey are so great right now? From what I've heard they just sound so much like the Deftones and I heard from somewhere that they sounded different to what I'de heard. Anyone care to enlighten me? I'm not bitchin about them I just don't see what's so great about them that people would que 2 days before the bloody gig! Was it really worth sleeping on the street outside?

Posted by Joel Watkins | August 7, 2007 6:54 PM | Reply to this

I'm holding Kaoru to his words. Been into Dir en grey for a few years, couldn't see them in Germany, so those two shows were completely worth the wait. And Joel, I'm sure the wait was WELL worth it. Even the hours I spent in line, were completely and utterly worth it all.

The fans are lovely, the band are just great.

They sound nothing like the Deftones. If you want to know what they sound like, maybe try listening to them, older music and newer. It's hard to describe. But you have to understand, people have waited YEARS for this.

I for one am not disappointed in the slightest. And really do hope they come again And soon. One dream has come true, and I'd gladly do it all again.

They were amazing and I'm glad they seemed to enjoy themselves!

I have loved Dir en grey for two years now so was queuing just to by the tickets for both shows ... I have to admit my sister and I were some of the people queuing outside the venue for days before Wednesday's show .. but it was worth every minute to be on the front row on both days!!
The whole audience sang along to most of the songs, and just cheered ecstatically to any bit they didn't know . IT was crazy .. the best shows I have ever been to and I have been to a fair few including huge bands like .. Red Hot Chili peppers, Incubus, Black Crows, Presidents of USA, U2, GnR,. Nothing compared to the love the whole audience had for Dir en grey.
As I was there for days I got to know the security guys and some of the staff of Dir en grey, everyone was great, and they all worked so hard ..some of the security being at the venue for almost as long as we were!!! The whloe experience .. incredible, something I will never forget. I made so many new friends, who I will meet again when Dir en grey return!
Dir en grey Otsukaresama deshita
I wait for your return!!!

Posted by Klicc | August 8, 2007 3:45 PM | Reply to this

Agreed! But they haven't become popular in the UK just in the last 2 weeks, people have loved them for years. Just coz kerrangs a few years behind everyone else...

Posted by Sarah | August 8, 2007 3:48 PM | Reply to this

I'm glad they're finally getting the credit they deserve over here. THere are plenty of awesome Jrock bands that dont get a look in in the UK at all >:(

DIR EN GREY RULES!! They are the Gods of all rock!! <333 They should start next tour as soon as possible. xD

I was one of the people that queued for quite some time before the gig started, around 7 hours on each day, hell i would have queued earlier if i didnt have to travel/book hotels etc!

It was well worth the wait, Dir en grey put on such an intense and passionate performance, and interacted with crowd really well. Ive been to loads of gigs, NIN,Machine Head, Trivium etc etc but these two nights beat them all.

Flawless in my opinion, its weird how only suddenly theyve begun to appear in magazines etc, People claiming they are a new band, but theyve had a loyal fanbase in the UK for many many years. Im so glad it went so well :D And will definately be seeing them again when they return!

Posted by Chris | August 8, 2007 3:57 PM | Reply to this

WOOO thats so good to hear Kaoru say they will be back soon :D
OMG
the gigs were so amazing. I queued for nine hours the first night, and 15 hours the second night, and i'd do it all again cos i got to the front row both nights :D
And to whoever said about diru soundin like deftones, try actually listening to them first! And i dont mean just their most recent album, the band change distinctly through each album, so you need to listen to more than just a few songs before coming out with a statement like that
finally the band are getting recognition, i've listened to them for 4 years now, and suddenly a lot of people are doing :D
cant wait for em to come back
wooo

Dir en grey were amazing! I can't wait to see what future they have with the UK. If someone told me a year ago that they were coming to the UK I wouldn't have believed them.
I hope more Jrock bands decide to take an interest in England, other than Gazette(Which I hopefully shall be going to).
Well the show was amazing, I am still slightly hyped up even if it was a week ago xD

Posted by Jei | August 8, 2007 4:05 PM | Reply to this

I was in both shows, it was awesome!
Dir en Grey is the best band in the world

I came from Spain, I spent the previous night in the queue, In the first concert I was in first row

I'll go to Munich to see them again

Before they became the awesome metal Dir en grey that they are now, they used to be the visual kei legend Dir en grey.

Their music has been very different and diverse, for each album. The albums of the past, is what has created the aura and legend of Dir en grey. Most of their fans found out about them due to their past.

New fans found out about the band through old fans, the internet or their supporting shows recently. However the majority of fans come from Dir en grey's visual kei days.

Amazing, eccentric, over the top and experimental, music, videos and theatrics were part of the bands old stage persona.

The band that exists now is a new incarnation, the band has always continued to change, and this is why the fans love them. They may sound similar to certain metal acts that are popular now, but this is new for them.

If you were already a huge fan of the metal genre, you won't find Dir en grey much different, or more exciting than your favorite metal band. However if you DO want to find what's special about them. Check their entire catalogue. The variations between each album makes them unique. The style, the Aura, the Presence and the Time in which the band used to exist is what made them so popular.

Though they may be annoyed with visual kei, and therefore shun their history, The bands history lives with them forever, and it is their past present and potential for the future that makes them exciting.

I hope this helps anyone who is wondering what makes/made them so amazing to the fans.

Dir en grey were the best gigs i've ever been to. O_O; I arrived with my sister on tuesday, in london, having travelled down from the midlands. We had walked around London all day, sight-seeing and the usual touristy stuff, and then joined the queue outside the Carling at 11:30pm on Tuesday night. We were probably the only ones NOT to have actual camping stuff >_> But despite the hard floor, we had an amazing time making new friends and spazzing about the fact Dir en grey were coming to play. Not once. But TWICE.

The time went suprisingly quick, for both days queing, and the shows themselves definitely did not disappoint. We had expected them to be fantastic, and they surpassed all our expectations. I will NEVER ever forget those two shows.

Being interviewed, sorta, by the Diru's translator and kawaii-kun (the camera guy) after the second show was pretty scary, as i'd run on 3 days of no sleep and coming out of a second concert, but it made the entire experience all the more better. Including on the first day... being... embarrassed by one of the guitar god's himself. Die. x___x

I will never... ever, forget THAT.

Aishiteru Dir en grey~!

I've been listening to Dir en grey for about 4 years now, and it really annoyed me when I picked up a Kerrang! magazine last week and it described Dir en grey as:
'Japans answer to MCR.'

I stopped reading Kerrang! once it started covering all the emo bands, and the fact that it's compared one of the best J-rock bands on earth to MCR is just...well...retarded. Plus Dir en grey hate emo.

I also think that they should get their visual kei image back as it was one of the things that really made them stand out.

Kerrang! really needs to catch up with the foreign music scene and stop associating everything with emo.

I hope Diru come back soon, hopefully they may do some gigs outside of london so more people can see them.

Posted by Maz | August 8, 2007 4:29 PM | Reply to this

OMG how could they say that about Diru?? That's rediculous >_<

They were amazing on Thursday though (couldn't get tickets for both dates) and I'm so so so happy I finally got to see them! It was intense O: <3

I was at the Thursday gig (which was the first one to go on sale) we got them the moment the went on sale, we spent 14 hours traveling down from Glasgow, a two coaches and a train, it was the best gig of my life.

Well for fucks sake, they are good. Dir en grey had never toured the UK before it says right? Well I'm not in the UK but I'm sure they were waiting like hell for it to happen. Dir en grey IS NOT all that we have heard before. Okay? I think that the vocalist could out do any screamo, because while he can scream and make any other twisted noise, suprise he has a beautiful voice also. They have a great drummer who actually does some interesting stuff instead of the same old same old and great guitarists. They're from Japan. Big deal, have you read some of they're older lyrics, have you read some newer lyrics? If you can't read Japanese, find them translated. If you don't want to, then don't say "the same crap we heard before in japanese" because it is NOT the same crap!! They are AUTHENTIC as far as I'm concerned and I think its great that Kerrang is actually writing something good about them.

Posted by Kaitlyn | August 8, 2007 5:05 PM | Reply to this

From what I understand Dir en grey's sound changed alot from the older days. They dropped their visual-shocking qualitys (you know, dramatic outfits, dramatic hairstyles) and I think "turned to the darker side". Kyo has a beautiful voice. He also can scream like hell. But I think their songs back then had alot more singing and less screaming. Also you have to take into thought that Dir en grey has many fans in the UK, and they haven't toured the UK so ofcourse the UK is going to be excited right! I think the sleeping outside is because...well different reasons but mainly because we don't know when Dir en grey is coming back to the UK so you wouldn't wanna miss out now. Although they do rock, I definatly think they're better than Deftones! Look around on Youtube for different stuff. Don't care about their appearance, the music is what counts.

Came from Spain to both shows, and it worthed.

TMOAB`s songs are awesone in live, the perfomance was great and the band was amazing.

"Aggitated Screams of Maggots" and " Disabled Complexes" with " Namameshiki...." were the best songs for me.

Hope they back soon ^^

Overall I must have spent £250 (travelling, accomodation, food) just to see Diru on that one faithful Thursday night, I was thoroughly impressed with their performance (when am I never impressed with them?) and wish I could've had the time (and money!) to see them twice.

Hoping to go see the GazettE in two months, I'm sure that gig will also rock~~!

Come back Diru, we love you! ^o^

dir en grey are amazing

i went to go see them on the thursday and they were great!

ive listened to them for bout 2 years now nd when i heard that they were coming to london i was soo happy

i ran 30 minutes in my lunch break at work to get the tickets the minute they came out. and im glad i did they were amazing

but what s annoyin me is how kerrang are only just picking up on them
and comparing them to shitty emo bands
thats why i stopped readin kerrang because it was all mcr nd fall out boy nd crap like that

my cousin came from ireland to see them nd loved it too!!!

they are amazing live. it was a great peformance.
ive been to lots of gigs but this was the best one
and one of the greatest times of my life!!

I went to the Wednesday show and i traveled from newton abbot (Devon) to get there. Me and my boyfriend spend allot of money getting a room for the night to go and see them. I would love it if they came to the UK again and would see them every time they came down no matter how far away it is! its worth it!!
we arrived at the Academy at 7:10 and still managed to get a good place with a very good view, i think we were very lucky. it was interesting to listen to all of the screaming fan girls! We don't get allot of that in a small place like newton abbot!

well, to sum up, Dir en Grey are amazing and i hope to see them again soon, until then i shall enjoy the memory i have of them. I am just guttered that we couldn't bring in any cameras!!

but hurray. much love for the diru guys ^^v

Posted by Laura | August 8, 2007 5:38 PM | Reply to this

Why is everyone getting so hyped over how the name is supposed to be spelt?
Perhaps these people hadn't noticed, BUT THIS IS A DAMN ARTICLE! Who cares?!

But yes, amazing show on the 2nd of August!
With two shows sold out, UK is definately on their tour list.

Posted by Abs | August 8, 2007 5:49 PM | Reply to this

it is a petty thing to get annoyed about, but the band has specified the name as Dir en grey, not with all capitals, so it's a bit annoying when something as big as Kerrang can't even do it correctly themselves. It's just one of those things that clearly shows Kerrang doesn't really know anything about the band, and are just getting their say on the action.

Posted by Gibson | August 8, 2007 5:55 PM | Reply to this

I thought that too when I saw it, but if you read the article it says in it that they are "Japan's answer to MCR" in the way that a lot of people hate them in Japan where as lots of people love them in the UK. And a lot of people hate My Chemical Romance in America but it seems everyone loves them in the UK (...exept for me >.> lol). So it's comparing them in that sense

The best experience of my life included queuing for 17 hours with great friends. Getting squashed at the front barrier, almost passing out and getting elbowed in the face many times. Buuut. It was all worth it, Dir en grey were AMAZING. My first concert and it couldn't have went any better. I loved every second. They looked amazing, sounded amazing everything was just amazing. Met awesome people there too.

I can not wait till they return. I'll be there waiting another forever. But soo worth it.

I have taken my nine year old son to two Dir en grey concerts. The band does awesome shows, and Koaru came off the stage to shake my son's hand at the first show, and Die gave him his water bottle at the second. He was the only kid in the audience at both shows. Dir en grey love their fans as much as their fans love them! That is a great point in their favor and their music ROCKS.

hmm... dir en grey was amazing. i mean, i never stopped to listen to anything else.
now though, with the release of moab... moab just kinda sucked. kisou and vulgar were perfect. wtd was awesome. gauze, macabre, and six ugly were impeccable. but moab... it just sucked.
i can't imagine waiting two days just to see dir en grey these days. maybe a few years ago, but not now.

Mad Capsule Markets a good metal band who happened to be from japan, all ugly as fuck, did their two UK tours and them playing the main stage at download get the a kerrange article? Does it fuck... bunch of pretty boys who cross dress and sound like shit do a UK tour and suddenly its all hail japan?

WHAT THE FUCK GUYS!?!

I so hate all of the n00bs that like Dir en grey. Jumping on the "OMFGZJAPANESEMUSICISSOKEWLLL!!!" bandwagon.
I've loved this band for about 4 or 5 years now, and I'm assuming the concert sold out due to the morons who picked up Kerrang and thought DEG were "AWSUM!!". That might make me sound like a bitter bitch, to be honest, I am a little envious, but it just sucks ass.
Bloody Jrock n00bs.

well you assumed wrong then. The first Dir en grey date sold out BEFORE kerrang printed anything about the band. Most people who went to see the band are devoted fans, who have listened to the band for the same, if not longer than you have (jen) although some people who went to the second date announced obviously would have heard from them from the two for one ticket offer in kerrang.
also (rellik san) you really are an idiot. The fact that, in your eyes they 'cross dressed' has got nothing to do with how we appreciate the band. And for the most part, Dir en grey's current fanbase is made up of fans who got into the band after the very early VK era of the band, apart from a few hardcore fans. And the fact that you think 'they sound like shit' is entirely your opinion, it is my opinion that Mad Capsules sound like shit. So your statement is moot really.

Posted by Gibson | August 8, 2007 11:03 PM | Reply to this

I agree with Gibson.
I'm a huuuge music fan but Dir en grey's been top of my list for 4 years now, nearly 5. And I was surprised at the quality of the fans at the UK shows. They're all hardcore fans and really dedicated to the band.
So before you go pissing and moaning about OUR band, get some first hand experience of how absolutely amazing they are.

Posted by Grainne | August 8, 2007 11:26 PM | Reply to this

yeah people stop the stupid ranting just admit that they're friggin great and listen up.
I was at the 2nd concert (30 hours of queue TOTALLY worth it) it was A.M.A.Z.I.N.G, I've seen them 3 times already and the london show was by faaaar the BEST
And the crowd mas composed of dedicated fans, so no "noobs" WTH
oh and Jen, it's been 8 years that I'm an unconditional dir en grey fan so Ha bit you!
Anyways, I'm not for that "kill the noobs" way of thinking, if you love dir en grey no matter for how long, it's all that matters

Ureshii.. -_-

I hope Dir en grey don't change because of our influence. I want Kyo to remain miserable so he can find new ways to awe us with his misery.

I so happy, that THEY Loved the UK fans. I hope they WILL COME BACK, I cant wait until their next single. They are going to become Japans Most International Band ever, probably since Japan X.

And F*** the people who got carry out and the screaming fan girls. That is so off putting. I hope they are ok and healthy, but FFS THEY are human beings not gods.

Those concerts changed my perception of life a little.

anyway enough.. I hope THEY continue gigging well and show the world that it doesnt matter what language you speak in, you can connect with people!

If you Like Dir en grey have a long and happy Life.

If you dont, and wish to share this opinion with evereyone...go F*** yourself

thank you

I haven't seen them live in person, MISSED THEM ALL THE TIME. I definitely gotta catch them live next time, But I have seen the DVD concerts and they are simply amazing live. That's enough reason to wait 2 days in line to see them especially if they don't come by often. Glad to see Deg is having success.

Just to re-iterate what most poeple have been saying hereDiru are AMAZING. I have to say though, I was deeply offended by the fact that a few issues ago Kerrang! posted "Introducing" Dir en grey...when they have been going for 10 years or so. But I can understand why considering that "The Marrow of a Bone" was their first UK album release. Anyway though, they are an influencing band, their show on Thursday 2nd August I went to was immense and totally overwhelming. Before judging them though people should plese take a moment to look at their translated lyrics, which are BEAUTIFUL... xXx

uh Dir en grey are the best!!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by Loretta | August 9, 2007 12:50 PM | Reply to this

considering we'd queued since tuesday and were at the front for the first gig, my friend and i decided to take to the balcony for the 2nd, but i have to say it was still absolutely amazing. i even got on okay with the retarded french chicks for the 2nd gig, cus we were all as exhausted as each other. especially seeing as we came out of wednesday and queued up for thursday immediately.

met some really cool people, and the gigs were immense. but diru is very much a love or hate band. it was them who got me into jrock at the end of 2003 and since then i've loved them, but i've seen more than enough people that hate them and i just turn off when people slag them off these days.

so before publically trying to slag off diru, remember two things.

1) for every one of you, there are a thousand screaming fangirls we are willing to set upon you
2) we honestly don't give two flying fucks what you think. go listen to music you like instead of giving anyone else your opinion.

just because they've only just started getting coverage by K! it doesn't mean there haven't been solid fans (we don't count fangirls as fans, they're fucktards) since their VK days.

You think that because DeG toured with Deftones and Fall of Troy that they must SOUND ALIKE? They don't. Deftones sounds like 80's Shoegaze crossbred with Nu-Metal. The ONLY song by them I like is "Hole in the Earth" otherwise they sound boring as hell. Ya need to quit trying to COMPARE diru to OTHER bands, because they don't sound a damn thing like any of the regurgitated EMO TRASH that we've been forcefed for the past 7 years. And that is precisely WHY we love them.

Posted by Kitsune_Baka | August 9, 2007 5:43 PM | Reply to this

Guess what, YOU WERE A N00B ONCE TOO! And its stuck-up snobs who really ruin it for the rest of us, YOU'RE the reason why outsiders think we're all idiots. Stop being so HARSH on people just because they just RECENTLY got into "YOUR" band. I've known about them since 2001, but I don't hold that shit over people's heads. You should be HAPPY they're getting all these new fans... And FUCK anyone who thinks DeG merch being sold in HOT TOPIC or FYE is gunna "ruin" the band... that's the dumbest shit I've ever heard.

i am so glad they enjoyed the shows just the the fans did. Kyo's face on the last night as he walked off stage was the most beautiful sight ever witnessed, that gremling child-happy grin of his surfaced itself again.

Im proud of my team also of easing the show's going on and organisation! also thanks a tonne to the venue and promoters as well, of course the biggest thanks goes to Dir en grey for agreeing to play to us!

for those that dislike the band take your bashing to somebody who cares please, fans hold your responses to these people, they are not worth the effort and its pointless to reason with those not in the same form of things we are. its difficult for them to understand what they are yet to know.

on the subject of the time scales of knowing the band? it makes you no lesser of a fan if you have known them since their recent shows in the UK or you have known them for the ten y ears they have been going. a fan is a person that listens to the music, the lyrics, translates thme to understand if they so wish to delve a bit deeper and are those that simply enjoy listening to them for their own reasons whattever they may be.

i am manager of the soon to be offcial street team of theirs, and i have only known of the band and most of my bands for....a year? im only in the position i am in because i saw so many people try to get it and give up, i decided not to give up when it seemed impossible. i could see i loved them and many here did so why the heck give up hnn?

does it make me any lesser of a fan to them and you because i've only known them a year or so? i love them with all i have thats why i wanted to bring them to those in waiting and those that are curious.

i hope i made those fans wanting, waiting and those curious about them; happy.
because we certainly made the band happy!

they will be back :B i shall try ma best to make sure we get a second injection of Dir en grey >.O

I've seen Dir en grey live in Japan many times and also travelled to Germany and France to see them. It was just so amazing to see them both nights in my own country. They truly are the greatest band I've ever seen and I'll be following them in Japan again in September.
Look forward to seeing them again in UK next time.

Posted by Julia | August 9, 2007 10:35 PM | Reply to this

I've seen them in Family Values and the Inward scream tour....they are magical live.
Dir en grey is what I want.

Posted by Shawnna | August 10, 2007 10:24 AM | Reply to this

And you need to stop pretending to be Japanese and write things as the Japanese would say them phonetically, your just embarrassing yourself. Also... DEG suck... simple... plain as, they are lame its the same music we've heard for years over here, but because its performed by pretty boys who don't speak English, you love them... how fucking ghey are you.

Also, don't call the Deftones boring kiddo, they were the Pearl Jam of my generation, just as MCR is the band that most represents your generation.

Posted by Rellik San | August 10, 2007 12:25 PM | Reply to this

Nah they don't actually suck. The correct statement is that you don't like them.

Enjoy

I was gutted that I couldn't go and see them in London, but I have a friend that went to both concerts, and she said they were fucking awesome.

I can't wait to see them perform in Munich; managed to catch their last European performance for a while!

To Rellik San:

A lot of Diru's fans couldn't give a toss if they're 'pretty boys' or not. It's their music that matters. The fact that they're handsome is an added bonus. Also, they haven't 'cross-dressed' since leaving the visual kei scene.

And I'm a huge fan of Mad Capsule Markets, btw. ;)

I love how people actually bother to read (or at least skim) through an article about a band they hate.
XP

Posted by Jakku | August 11, 2007 12:45 AM | Reply to this

Nope I can prove, that musically they do suck on both technical and creative levels, regardless of my opinion on them. So if you have no creative or technical skill... that must mean you suck. :)

so erm... I guess I just pwned you.

Posted by Rellik San | August 11, 2007 2:07 AM | Reply to this

Fair enough then, its your call, but regardless of whether you like them or not, you have to consider the essence of what they day is european death/black metal and when put in to context, they can't really compete with the european bands.

Though always nice to meet another Mad Caps fan, and you have to admit, what I said, regardless of my opinion of DEG, holds true, it is essentially because they are pretty boys, they are popular and get so much attention, that isn't to say there aren't fans of them musically, but those are few and far between comparatively.

And thanks for writing a decent response instead of flaming me. Its always nice to have a real discussion about music.

Posted by Rellik San | August 11, 2007 2:11 AM | Reply to this

Well I felt I had to raise a valid point. Other Japanese bands, like Polysics and MCM had to work up, playing small venues before they got any recognition here and they worked hard for a European fan base, DEG come over and get head lined to play major venues, its more then a little unfair.

Posted by Rellik San | August 11, 2007 2:14 AM | Reply to this

Why are you putting Dir en grey in the context of Death/Black metal? That is NOT what the band are, therefore 'competing' and comparing Deg, with bands from a completely different variant of music is idiotic.
So come on then, prove to us that they suck both technically and creatively, coming all high and mighty on the subject means shit, 'til you can go through with your word. Therefore no one is 'OMG U GOTZ PWNED - LOOK AT ME HAVIN PROPER TALKS ABOUT BANDS I KNOW NOWT ABOUT'
If this is what you believe 'real music discussion' to be, then leave it out, because you're not going to convert anyone to you close minded 'OMGTHEY'REPRETTYSOTHATSWHYEVERYONELIKESTHEM' way of thinking.
Idiot

Posted by Gibson | August 11, 2007 3:52 PM | Reply to this

'And you need to stop pretending to be Japanese and write things as the Japanese would say them phonetically,' - Er, it's called ROMAJI dumbass. Rōmaji is the standard way of transliterating Japanese into the Latin alphabet, allowing people to speak, and understand Japanese without actually knowing any of the japanese writing systems. And in most cases that people use it, it is entirely necessary to do so, it's got nothing to do with 'pretending to be japanese' But of course~ An idiot like yourself would choose not to believe that.
It's 'gay' not GHEY, grow up.
MCR is the band that represents our generation THROUGH YOUR EYES, you're swamped in a population of crappy emo bands and mainstream dull crap which you deem represents us.
Why do you think most of us found an interest in Dir en grey in the first place? No, not cos they're 'pretty boys', because it was DIFFERENT, if they sounded like western music that was heard for years and years then i would NOT listen to them. Because it's boring, yeah, Deftones = BORING.
You really need to understand that WE DONT LISTEN TO DEG FOR HOW THEY LOOK, furthermore, you need to understand that YOU CHOOSE TO DIS A BAND SIMPLY FOR HOW THEY LOOK, so who's the one with a pathetic concept of music?

Posted by Gibson | August 11, 2007 4:05 PM | Reply to this

You really are clueless.
Dir en grey didn't just pop over here one day and suddenly everyone fuckin' loved them, if you think that then all of your opinions and statements mean shit.
Dir en grey has had a european fanbase for YEARS, i myself have listened to them for over 4 years, and most other fans have too, if not longer.
Once upon a time, there was a brilliant little creation called the INTERNET, and it allowed some people to go online , and search for music that wasn't shitty mainstream garbage, and find some bands that they really liked the sound of. After a while, those few people become hundreds, and then thousands, all the time the fanbase is growing in momentum, and communities start to appear, for people all sharing the same taste in music. (Still with me? All standard stuff here ya know, happens with all bands, REGARDLESS OF WHAT THEY LOOK LIKE) And now they've finally come to the UK, they get their DESERVED recognition in Kerrang and other magazines. The only reason you're having your little tantrum is because you seem to think that the band have come from nowhere, when they've been going for TEN years.
Oh and just so you know, the two venues that the band played in london WERE SMALL for DEG, in their homeland they are able to fill huge stadiums of thousands and thousands.
If you don't like the band then fair enough, but posting on here, saying how you dont like that the fans like the band is just pointless. No one's going to listen, so go away.

Posted by Gibson | August 11, 2007 4:17 PM | Reply to this

The concert was great i was at the one on Wednesday. I've liked them for about a year now but i like them more now than before I've got to say that hear them live is better them the crappy versions of the song you download the quality is well better.I think the concert was great and i hope Dir en grey are well received in the future as well .

Posted by michiko | August 11, 2007 6:40 PM | Reply to this

I just hope to god that with Diru in Kerrang! that the little emo's don't start jumping on the bandwagon spouting at how they discovered Diru, that would so piss me off.

TBH I've got over my absolute Diru fascination, their latest album was good, but nothing great (With the exception of The Pledge) Yes they are a pretty good band, but if you explore the Jrock and Visual Kei scene, there are alot of bands equal to, and in some cases above Diru.

Wish i could have gone to the concert though, sounded awesome.

Posted by Noddy | August 11, 2007 11:26 PM | Reply to this

Well, you know, I just a feel a band should work its way up before getting big shows, by the way, don't talk down to me, I don't appreciate 12 year olds, who probably think they know everything because Kerrang told them whats what talking down to me. I've been listening to this music probably before you were born.

I never said the band came from no where, I do feel though, they ignored their european fan base, touring for 8 years exclusively in america and japan, and were meant to be grateful they finnaly deemed us worthy of their presence? I call shennanigans.

By the way, MCM were a stadium band in japan, but on their 1st UK tour, were filling tiny venues like the Witchwood, they also had a huge fan base, as they did a lot of work for Manga Video. So your point is completely moot.

Posted by Rellik San | August 12, 2007 2:19 AM | Reply to this

SHUT THE FUCK UP!

Honestly, 5 year olds today, no respect for their elders.

first, if they aren't performing death/black metal influenced music, then what do you call it, and before you spout 'VK', thats a fashion style, not a music style.

Well then, Kyo screams all his songs, first sign of a bad singer, then the band, creates a purposeful discord, but laking the melodious sub-text of bands like system, but the sound DEG produce, is more like noise designed to drown out any actual audible musical progression through out the score.

Finally, read what I actually posted before getting on your high horse, I said, I have no doubt that there are fans who like them for the music, but lets face it, the majority are teenage girls who like them because Kyo is what they term as 'cute'. Look in any unofficial DEG forums or discussion and you'll see exactly what I mean.

So the next time you want to try and lecture me about music, don't bother, because explaining simple concepts that small minded children like yourself don't seem to understand, really doesn't entertain me, so take your "I'm really important on the internetz" attitude elsewhere, its not welcome here.

Posted by Rellik San | August 12, 2007 2:26 AM | Reply to this

I would really hate for Dir en grey to be exposed to posers and emo kids....that would suck. It blows when posers adorn their little backpacks with patches and pins just cause they think its cool. Whatever as long as Dir en grey comes ahead and makes more great albums...They'll be know worldwide. Haha gives me goosebumps. They deserve all the recognition they can get especially after working so hard for 10 years or so.

My best wishes and prayers to Dir en grey.

Rock on m*therf*ckers!!!!

Posted by D | August 12, 2007 3:56 AM | Reply to this

lol If you're referring to me being a 12 year old who get's my attitude from Kerrang then you can't be more wrong. I'm an adult, for one, and last week was the first time i EVER purchased Kerrang simple because they had an article on Dir en grey, i know perfectly well how to defend my opinion and other peoples opinions, i'm not talking down to you, and i understand that you're not talking down to me, but coming here and criticizing the majority of Dir en grey's fanbase, what did you expect? Of course i am going to defend my own opinion.
Dir en grey have worked their way up, i know how you mean, normally a band would tour in a specific country in small venues and gain a fanbase that way, before being praised, but Dir en grey have established international fanbase entirely through the internet, which is why there was such a high demand for them before they even came to the UK.
I also agree with what you say about ignoring the european fanbase, well, to an extent ~ as with most jrock bands, the tours of europe they did NEVER included UK, which was very annoying for the fans here, but for me that's not a reason to dis the band, they themselves (in this actual article) stated they weren't aware of a fanbase in the UK, and having them finally come here to the UK and sell out (promising future dates in the UK) is something to celebrate, it's that simple.
I respect your opinion though, we'll just have to agree to disagree.
PS, Kyo doesn't scream all the time, if you think that then listen to something that isn't Marrow of a bone.

To Paige:

As soon as you said 'get a life n listen to my chemical romance' I lost all respect in regards to any of your future posts.

Which turned out to be the right thing after looking at your second post and its lack of grammar.

The bands that are in the Jrock + VK scene totally overshadow anything that is in the current emo scene, by a long way.

Posted by Noddy | August 12, 2007 5:39 PM | Reply to this

You're just rude, possibly blinded by your own hate, but Dir en grey does not suck.
They are a decent band. They put on an amazing and intense live show and they are all around decent musicians. It doesn't mean they are the best in the world, not at all. There are tons of other musicians out there who have a lot more experience and skill, but there's something about Dir en grey that moves the fans, which is why they are popular.
The most skilled band isn't always the best band. The fact is that you don't like them, and that's perfectly fine, but there's no reason to be an asshole about it. I hate rap music, but I don't go insulting rap musicians and 'proving that they suck musically', because it's just rude and ignorant, and I can understand that people like it and would get offended. Why can't you do the same with this?

PS: Dir en grey hasn't cross dressed in ages, but most fans don't care about appearance. I would like Dir en grey just as much even if they were ugly as hell.

Yes. It was worth sleeping out on the street for the three days I did, to see them for the two shows I did in June. It was also worth staying overnight for the seven shows I saw in february, and it was worth flying to Florida to see the tenth anniversary show Feb 2nd, and getting no sleep for 36 hours, and sleeping on the floor of the airport afterwards. Best days of my life, all of them, and would have been worth 5 times the discomfort and the expense.

I can't really bother to explain it to someone who thinks Dir en grey sound "so much like the Deftones", because that right there tells me this is someone with no ear for music at all. Explaining it won't do a damn bit of good, you either get it or you don't. to get it, you need ears, discernment, and a soul. If your own ears, mind, and heart don't tell you what's so great about them, a billion essays from rabid fans will not be effective.

Posted by Lei | August 12, 2007 9:14 PM | Reply to this

Oh and I forgot the 16 hours in the blistering ten degree cold overnight for the Boston show in February, and the similar cold overnight for the New York show three days later. Yup. All very worth it.

Posted by Lei | August 12, 2007 9:19 PM | Reply to this

I would reply to this, but since I can't decipher whatever cryptic language you are using.. I... can't. I get the impression you are bashing Dir, in which case I'd say thanks for sharing your opinion, now piss off. But I can't be absolutely sure, since your post made not a wit of sense. Kyo's lyrics --both in japanese and in kyogrish-- make more sense than whatever this is you said. Go get someone to translate it into english for you, repost, and I'll get back to you.

Posted by Lee | August 12, 2007 9:26 PM | Reply to this

"you need to listen to more than just a few songs before coming out with a statement like that"

You think so? Personally I don't think you need to listen for more than a few seconds. I hear no similarity, no matter what song you choose....

We saw them in NY in june. Were in line from 4:45 am thursday morning, for the show friday night... and then overnight again for saturday. It was worth the waiting, the sleeping on the street, the hardly sleeping at all, the sun beating down on our heads.. everything. I would do it again tomorrow if given the opportunity.

Yes getting that front row is worth whatever it takes, isn't it? ~.^ Yes indeed.

Well I used to listen to MCM, and yea they're cool.

But as much as I hate my own fandom, because they are a bunch of whiney fangirls like you said, Dir en grey are hardly what I call cross-dressin' pretty boys. Not only that, this band started in little gigs just like MCM, and have worked their way up as well. So to say they popped outta nowhere like a rabbit isn't true at all dude.

I like Dir en grey for their music, not the visuals [but I will say losing the VK bullshit was the best thing they've done]. Their music crosses many metal genres, and I love metal so it's a win/win situation for me.

Posted by Ryan | August 14, 2007 5:23 AM | Reply to this

Dude, many bands have scream vocalists, and these bands do quite well. Darkest Hour, In Flames, Unearth etc etc. What sets Kyo apart though is that he doesn't sound like the generic metal screamer, he adds the anger emotion in his screams to actually sound pissed off. Most metal screamers just scream and it sounds empty as fuck, and holds nothing.

I am one of those rare fans that you mention that like this band for their music and not the image. Thankfully, I happen to be a boy and not turned on by asian men, so again another win/win for me. I will say Dir en grey's fanbase is prolly the worst fanbase in any band's fandom. They're always either at each other's throat or they're bitching about how hot the members are. It's appallaing.

Posted by Ryan | August 14, 2007 5:28 AM | Reply to this

i dont think it was all the n00bs that bought the tickets, the shows sold out without any promotion from Kerrang or anywhere,

ive been listening to them for about 5 years and everyone at the gig was singing along so pationatley, they cant have only just got into them.

And i think the concert sold out more to due with the fact that the band are absoloutley amazing!

"I also think that they should get their visual kei image back as it was one of the things that really made them stand out." lol Have you seen all of the visual kei bands in Japan lately? Sure, they might stand out, out of Japan to people who have never heard of it (visual kei) before. Otherwise, in Japan, and to all others who know of visual kei...they'll probably end up looking like all the rest of them. XD

Besides, they stopped the visual kei look for a reason, so...why would they wanna go back again? :P

Yes, it's annoying to me because the correct spelling/captilization for Dir en grey is pretty damn obvious, considering it's on merchandise and such... Withering to death. was the first CD of them available in the US and it has it right on there, so where the hell did people get Dir En Grey/Dir en Grey??

It might seem stupid, yes, but people can and will get annoyed over such things that are obvious to figure out. I was only 12 when I got into Dir en grey, and even I could get it right then.

In relation to the recent posts about dropping the MCR thing, i have to point out that it was a MCR fan who jumped out and posted that Diru fans needed to get a life and listen to MCR.

Which in turn implied that Diru was crap, which isn't the case at al, it was then logical to expect Diru fans to jump to the defence of Diru and give backlash against the MCR loving poster.

So really when people are saying that Diru fans are lynching MCR, that isn't really the case at all, it was actually an MCR fan who raised their name in this topic, not a Diru fan.

I hope you can see where i'm coming from with this.

please, for the love of God
DO NOT COMPARE MCR TO DIRU

and for people who kept saying that some of the DEG fans only listens to them cos theyre good looking...
thats not true
ive heard their music last year but have only looked up their pictures later this year
i love them for their music, not for their looks
and even though i cant understand what the HECK theyre sayingi still cant get enough of their music

CAN EVERYONE PLEASE SHUT UP DISSING DIR EN GREY...AND SAYING THEY HAVE NO TALENT!!!!!!!!!
JESUS!
IGNORANT F***KERS!
SERIOUSLY!!!

EVERY SINGLE BAND ON THIS PLANET....IS DIFFERENT.
EVERY SINGLE BAND HAS A SOUND....DIR EN GREY IN MY OPINION ARE VERY DIFFERENT. AND WTF?!? NOISE?!
HOW MANY SONGS HAVE U LISTENED TO IDIOT?!??!?!?!?
ITS NOT FREAKING NOISE....!!!!!!!
DO YOU EVEN KNOW WHAT THE SONGS ARE ABOUT??!??! THE MESSAGES THEY SEND???????????? SOME SONGS MAY BE PRETTY POINLTESS. BUT DIR EN GREY HAVE THE MOST POWERFUL SONGS OUT THERE. AND KYO IS THE MOST AMAZING LYRICIST I KNOW!!!
SO BEFORE YOU GO TALKING SHI*T ABOUT THEM......READ UP ABOUT THEM. LISTEN TO THEIR SONGS PROPERLY.

SEE...THERES THE IGNORANCE AGAIN.
JEEZ.
PEOPLE LIKE THAT ANNOY ME SO MUCH.
YOU JUDGE A BAND...BY 1 OR 2 SONGS...THEN U GO BASH ON THEM.

IDIOTS.

This is one of the greatest bands on Earth. I agree with whoever told everyone to check out all their albums. Alot of variety there.
Can't believe they actually came to England. Wow.

Posted by RevengeBabyYeah | August 20, 2007 4:15 PM | Reply to this

I love them, I was at the 2nd of August show.

I've just read pretty much all that was said on here, and although I've seen some reasonable responses, I have to say the majority just sounded like a load of 5 year olds having a tantrum (whether or not you like DEG)

The way I see it, Dir en grey are like Marmite, you either love em', or hate em'

I just so happen to like Marmite ^_^

I think Dir en grey are a good band even though I liked them better 2 years ago, because the music had more melody.
So I personally also think "The GazettE" are a better Live band so I am happy that I got my ticket for the London gig for them because I just heard it is also SOLD OUT since days already without any advertising. They also should do a 2nd gig in UK, someone up for making a voting to get a 2nd date for the GazettE?

Posted by Daniel | August 25, 2007 3:04 AM | Reply to this

I'd just like to say that as a huge JRock fan who's been listening to it for years now, its great to see one of the best bands of the genre getting some publicity in the UK press. Here's hoping that some other great bands are achknowledged from Japan, because although Dir en grey are absoutly fantastic, there are many more equally good bands out there.

Thanks kerrang for giving me something to look forward to on wednesdays every so often.

More diru posters please :P

Posted by Ranjitzu | August 26, 2007 8:16 PM | Reply to this

not to mention MUCC. they also just played in between D'espa and Diru. Was a fantastic gig aswell.

Sorry but any X Japan reunion cannot be complete without hide. RIP. will still be trying my damn hardest to get to see em though.

Posted by Ranjitzu | August 26, 2007 8:21 PM | Reply to this

I agree, I hope those idiot 'mainstream band' followers, don't come after Diru JUST because they've been featured in Kerrang. I just hate it when kids like that claim that 'they found them first' and know all about it. Darn scene and emo kids, i hope they don't all come running in just because they'rea artical is in Kerrang. It would be a shame to lose Diru to mainstream.. I'v never heard such honest, beautiful music in my life.

Posted by Any | August 28, 2007 9:04 PM | Reply to this

While I do agree with you Any, I think I would be very happy for DEG to get more attention. And although most scene and emo kids are pretty much like that, I'm sure there are some that would like the band genuinely and not in an annoying way. Not everybody is the same. imo.

One of the reasons fans are willing to wait around for two days is because they are amazing live. Even if you're not too keen on the music, I recommend seeing them play. The show itself is very powerful and very much worth the money and time. It's hard not liking them.

Posted by Jelly | September 26, 2007 11:14 PM | Reply to this

IS everyone going to see them again at their three uk shows.
Although they promised to come back and not keep us waiting ... how amazing is it that they come back so soon
Can't wait til November!!

My goodness! I finally finished reading every single post and I must say these arguments will ever end. Many people will always say a band sucks because they don't like it. It really bothers me how arrogant and close-minded most people are. To all J-rock fans out there, when someone insults our J-rock bands, don't insult them back or they're favorite band (or the one that is being compared with). Just be open-minded and try to be reasonable instead of sounding like a stupid ignorant little kid because you just put a bad reputation on us J-rock fans. Anyway, Diru I love you!

Wow .. the Dir en grey thread continues... 2007 really has been the best year.. I've been able to see Dir en grey six times. I love this country, and all the fans that cheered them on enough to bring them back to visit us so soon. I Couldn't help myself but to nip over to Paris to catch their gig there also.. (Yes they're my fave band) And I have to say the Uk shows had a much better atmosphere.. no one was fighting for a start, which was a continuous problem in France.. and the audience participation and love here, was something else. It's crazy how a band from Japan visiting our shores has finally given me a reason to be proud to be British. The respect fans showed at the end of the gigs too, standing back and not mobbing them as they walked to the bus was so obviously appreciated by the band also.. (shown when Kyo bowed to everyone before getting on the bus) YAY Britain, and YAY Dir en grey.

i liked them better when they were visual kei like GazettE

I hope they come back to the UK and visit up north, they are awesome, haven't hear a song i don't like yet. Amber is probably the best song ever.

Dir en grey are absolutely F*ckin EPIC..i love all of them :D
Kyo sings with such passion and energy and is one of many amazing talents to come out of Japan..along with Kaoru and Die on guitar each complimenting eachothers style..then there's Toshiya <3 who i have heard can sing as well as play his bass :)..and Shinya on drums..well the intensity he attacks his drumkit with is just mindblowing he has such power and talent:)

i really love this band and salute them for their outstanding music and for bringing their music into the U.K (good idea by the way)

oh and Kyo..half deaf or not u are one hell of a singer and should keep at it..your lyrics are beautiful and are so appropriate with people of this generation..

Arigatou Dir en Grey <3

Love has a name.
And that name,
is Kyo <3

Don't you just love his performances? Everytime I've seen them play, he's cut himself in some way and bled pretty badly.. If that's not putting everything you've got into it then I have no freakin clue what is.
They've really come a long way since their Visual Kei days, but hey, I'm not complaining..
You get to see Kyo with his shirt off a lot more *drools*...
