Green Day album update!

Green Day frontman Billie Joe Armstrong recently had a chat with US magazine Rolling Stone.

In the interview, the guitarist reveals that the three-piece have already written about 45 songs towards the follow-up to 2004's American Idiot, but have no idea when the next creation will be ready.

"It's totally chaos," says Armstrong. "I want to dig into who I am and what I'm feeling at this moment - which is middle-aged. We've been doing this for almost 20 years now. You want to make sure that you are being honest with yourself. I also have to ask myself, 'What's real out there?' Right now, it seems stagnant."

What do you reckon to this revelation?

What direction will this new, more "middle-aged" material take?

Let us know! And be sure to include a link to your MySpace profile, so we can feature your comments in an upcoming issue of Kerrang! magazine!

I don't mind what direction Green Day go in to be honest, I liked their old stuff like Dookie which I've got but I also really liked American Idiot, even if a lot of people weren't so keen on it. :]

I only got into them recently, but I think that Billie Joe's powerful lyrics go perfectly with the guitar, and I hope it stays that way with their new albums. We don't want them to be sell outs do we?

Green day, yea okay, they might not be the youngest band but there music is the best music ever. They have inspired so many young people and i dont think their ready to put their insturments at the minute. ROCK ON GREEN DAY!!!!

Green Day, we've all heard the name and if you haven't then you don't know your music very well.
These boys are amazing at what they do, and what they do is produce amazing music time after time.
They got sucessful and suddenly everyone thinks they've 'sold out'. So, are you a sell out if you make it big?
If they decide to call it a day then the music industry will have lost an amazing band, a wonderfull influence and a piece of punk rock history.
What do I say? I hope green Day keep on rockin our socks for years to come. They are one of the best bands of their time.
Hell. Fucking. Yeah.

To say the new material will be 'better than ever' would be pretty harsh, since Green Day have done some amazing work over the years. Anthems, even. I myself look forward to more of their trademark depth and even more songs about how ridiculously flat and gray life is - I actually think their 'middle-aged' approach will be interesting after some of the themes on AI that appealed to teens (it was a very deep concept though). Either way I'm really excited to hear they're on their way back!

I think Kerrang! writers should put down their pens. Thats what I think.

"Punk rock daddies."!?

I wonder what punk rock you have been listening to!? Last time I checked Green Day had become a pop band.

Oh well, we're all entitled to opinions. Its just a pity that Kerrang! seem to think that pumping bands into the ground gives them license to put bands into the wrong context continually.

I suppose its still better than all that new metal crap you guys used to pump in the late 90's though!?

I really like Green Day and can't wait for their new album to come out. I think the songs will be good, because they have had 4 years to write them! Can't wait! Sure it will be even better than American Idiot, which is a really good album and will take a lot to get better than it.

ARE YOU INSANE?
THERE IS NO POP MUSIC?

i'm pretty sure, pop music is that which is popular. hence the phrase POP

also thetop 40....is full of POP music.

im sorry to say but i agree with sean...green day are not punk rock, essentially theyre pop punk with hints o punk influences thrown in.

At the end of the day theyre a massive band who have clearly broadened their musical horizons and come a long way since their first release.

All credit to them for working hard and keeping their fan base, while exploding over recent years and increasing the fan base tenfold.

i fuckin love Green Day so much
sounds to me as if they want to retire..
lets hope not like!

and i have to agree with the dude above,
they are pop punk but some of their older stuff is closer to punk rock than American Idiot.
acts like The Sex Pistols and The Exploited are punk rock.

Green Day are still immense though :]

Greenday have had their fifteen minutes of fame. But with age comes experience. They could be around forever.

Green Day have produced some amazing songs and I believe that this new album will be the ultimate Green Day CD. They've had a good few years to write it and there's no doubt about the fact that Green Day should still be singing and producing music when they're in their 60's. They're one of the greatest bands ever and i'm sure plenty of people agree with me.

:)

GREEN DAY....THEY HAVE GOTTEN AMMIES....AWARDS FROM MTV FOR BEST ROCK BAND,BEST ROCK VIDEO AND MANY MORE!!
THE DIRECTION IS PROBABLY IS TO GO UP AND EVEN HIGHIER!COZ ITS GREENDAY....A PUNK ROCK BAND THAT IS VERY SUCCESSFUL!
AND HOPEFULLY AGEING WILL NOT AFFECT THEIR SHOWS OR THEIR GOOD MUSIC!

GREEN DAY ROCKS!!!

"Middle-Aged?"
So what!
I can see them making one of the greatest albums of their career.
Let's face it, American Idiot was godly.
With their age and experience will come even better material!

Posted by Gavin Critchley | October 9, 2007 12:15 PM | Reply to this

To be honest, i dont care if they feel middle aged.
Just listen to the music. It has gotten better with age so this one should be the best one yet.
I know its cliché but green day have changed alot of peoples lives so they must be doing something right.

Posted by The Ginger One | October 9, 2007 12:16 PM | Reply to this

It's gonna be angrier. Being middle aged and still doing the same job you were 20 years ago? I would be.

But then again, they do have an awesome job. Either way they're obviously gonna make a fucking masterpeice.

Posted by Dan Harrington | October 9, 2007 12:17 PM | Reply to this

The thing with GD is that American Idiot, whilst granting them huge commercial success, alienated a lot of their original fans from Dookie times etc, because AI felt like an all too concept and mainstream break away from their supposedly punk roots.
So a follow up album to AI will most likely remain popular with AI fans and the newer fanbase, but it'll be harder to sell it to the old school fans.
But then there'll be those inbetween, all open GD fans that like the old stuff and didnt mind AI much at all.
And as for the band feeling middle aged, that doesnt necessarily mean their sound will change, maybe just lyrically the content is gonna be different. Its not stopped other bands from releasing new material, like Metallica. But even those guys admitted their next album is likely to sound more pre-black in the end.

Many fans get disappointed when bands take new directions with their music, some of my friends don't like American Idiot compared to their earlier work. But i think they should make the music they want and are happy with, because that will make a much more fun and interesting record, and when played live would be amazing.

Posted by Gilman | October 9, 2007 12:19 PM | Reply to this

I think Green Day should keep on going, they have done brilliant with all their albums including "American Idiot"

I think that they should keep going, start doing more like they started, punk rock. I think the first and second album is the best two i have ever heard. Since 1997's album i thought it was the best I have ever heard from them! Keep it up guys.

They may be middle aged but so are alot of other great musicians, they can (and will) make alot more great music. I think to stop themselves sounding the same they should move away from the pop/punk scene and become a little heavier maybe even grungey. I love green day and dont doubt that this next album will b great but i hope they will take a new direction to keep the fans from getting bored :)

I think we have the next van halen or def lepard on our hands. They are gonna need to slow things down abit due to rist of heart attack, add some keyboards and add reverb and there you have it. I bet my left shoe im right!

Ok
well I recon that green day should just realise an album that they r pleased with

They've done that in the past and its been fantastic
and the songs they do are brilliant like 2000 light years away, basket case, longview Hitchin a ride and holiday
just 2 name a few

Green day fucking rock and going be around for a long time to come!!!!!!!!

What do you reckon to this revelation?
What direction will this new, more "middle-aged" material take?

I believe their 'middle-aged material' will be more like their older, arguably better quality music and I think this is a push in the right direction for Green Day and they should return to the roots of their music in aid of a re-discovery of themselves as a band.

iv grown up listening to green day from the days of dookie to modern day american idiot.
i mean the 1st few hearing of american idiot great cos it was my childhood band back from teh dead!
but after 3 or so plays of the album they might of well have never came back!
i could listen to dookie inside out all day long and love it.
so unless there new album is back to how they were then i doubt there will be much point in them feeling old at all!
unless there brains have forgot how amazing they used to be!

Posted by Dave | October 9, 2007 12:22 PM | Reply to this

i dont care what green day are going to do with the next album as long as its not a copy from dookie or american idiot. i hope they wont play safe and make some commercial easy album. they should do something diffirent.

Posted by katie | October 9, 2007 12:22 PM | Reply to this

they feel middle-aged? but the thing is you make yourself feel as young as you act... and with a new album to follow american idiot loads of people will wan to hear it to see what they've been doingin the last 3 years. and i agree.. long live greenday

Posted by Sammi | October 9, 2007 12:22 PM | Reply to this

I think that because they are starting to feel older that they are going to star coming out with some toned down music/songs. Not as jump around, hyper, crazy stuff like in their 1st few videos. They will still have their rockin' tunes of course but I think that people will notice them toning it down a little at least!

Posted by Chad Young | October 9, 2007 12:24 PM | Reply to this

I think as the band ages their music will move more away from their earlier pop-punk roots and focus more on their political views with a slower rock sound.

Posted by Phil | October 9, 2007 12:24 PM | Reply to this

I think we all know they're only gonna get more ordinary. Radio friendly, nothing special and disposable. OK, when American Idiot came out, I admit i liked it, but it got boring very quickly. The band saying they're worried about being middle aged just shows they're not going back to singing about getting stoned and masturbating.

Posted by Dave | October 9, 2007 12:24 PM | Reply to this

Martin Luther king was a hell of a lot older then any member of Green Day
and he was still considered a legend.
The album will turn out the way they want it to
and will yet again go down as a legendary album.

I can wait for the new album. I loved American Idiot and I can understand that it is going to be hard to follow that up. Good luck to them. no matter how long it takes it will be a goodun I'm sure...but lets not have a Chinese Democracy situation here guys!

whatever directions it is, it better lead them off the edge of a cliff or in to a huge spike!!! lol

Posted by nathan | October 9, 2007 12:28 PM | Reply to this

Green Day still rock and age has nothing to do with how good or bad an album turns out....it all has to do with how passionate they still feel about the music they want to make....whilst their music may take a slightly different turn, maybe more philosphical ..maybe more polictical about the happenings in the world...i believe they can still get their message across with vibe and passion....

Posted by Abbie | October 9, 2007 12:28 PM | Reply to this

New album, admitting hes middle aged... now that their name is bigger than ever they will use that to stop global warming and all that crap... there gonna end up like U2

Posted by Harley | October 9, 2007 12:28 PM | Reply to this

I think Green Day will take a similar route as the Red Hot Chili Peppers in that elements of their past work will be heard through more honest and toned down material. They cant be expected to live up to the likes of 'Basket Case' forever. They're getting older and there will be avenues they want to explore before they call it a day. This isnt a bad thing by any means - so dont throw a tantrum if what they release is not what you expected!!

but good luck to them what ever they choose x

I think their new album will be interesting because Billie's been saying that he's been writing about his middle 20's life. I think it'll be awesome showing that they used to big and now's there chance. Every band has the ups and downs from time to time. I'll be great to listen to an album with American Idiot beats but with a true meaning of things.

Posted by sumeet | October 9, 2007 12:30 PM | Reply to this

the direction i think in which they will take will be along the lines of their cover of John Lennons "Working Class Hero". This also goes down the Boulevard of Broken dreams route. Mature music, mature lyrics. Whatever they put on the record, it'll be awesome.

I reckon they'll make something worse than American Idiot. It sounds like its going to be boring. The old Green Day was good, but not the new depressing stuff.

lmao.
middle-age?what the hell....they rock and that's the main part.the age doesn't matter at all!!!

Posted by kerstin | October 9, 2007 12:32 PM | Reply to this

I reckon they're gonna hit it hard and unforgetable. Its the midlife crisis stage which means it will sound like a wife nagging about how much money you spend at the strip club crossed with the bank manager asking do you really wanna sell your house in a blender with a porsche smashing into a three peice punk rock band at 180mph, its either gonna be freakin' rad or pants like american idiot, long live NIMROD.

P.S. Just for the record, I really do love Green Day.....when theyre not singing about the end of a bloody month...

Posted by David Bowen | October 9, 2007 12:33 PM | Reply to this

They will probably sound worse than ever.
They have never been good musicians.

Posted by Steve | October 9, 2007 12:35 PM | Reply to this

I actually think that the new album problably is gonna sound like the most other things that have been done in the last years in this kind of music. But i hope they will shock and do something really not like anything else. Green Day its allready starting to almost getting boring.

Posted by Matilda | October 9, 2007 12:35 PM | Reply to this

I think Green Day's new musical direction might be very politically written, much like the song 'American Idiot', but also, I think they might've picked up on the fact that their real* fans preferred them more before the album American Idiot. This album will obviously be very commericial, so whatever they write, they've got to expect a lot of people to follow their views and ideas.

*real- fans that liked them before they'd even heard of George Bush being president, and who dont 'just love' Basket Case.

Posted by Cal Payne | October 9, 2007 12:35 PM | Reply to this

I think Green Day managed to achieve a really grown up album with American Idiot. Of course it's no Dookie or anything, because they were different back then. I think it takes real guts to actually play as you are, rather than try to pretend you're still 17. They showed real talent and continuity with AI, and I hope they can bring this maturity and worldliness to future albums!

Posted by Malsain | October 9, 2007 12:37 PM | Reply to this

To be honest, i think the direction should be straight to the bin. They haven't been the same for years, and American Idiot was shit. Time to give up lads.

Posted by Steven | October 9, 2007 12:37 PM | Reply to this

Who knows? Maybe them feeling middle aged may bring about a mid-life crisis and they'll resort to making opera? Nah, i jest. I'm sure Greenday will continue to make inspiring and fun music though i'm secretly hoping for a return to the Dookie days (:

Posted by Natalie | October 9, 2007 12:39 PM | Reply to this

All that's important, for Green Day to still be a brilliant band, is to stay relevant. There is no need for them to change their views or change their sound, they should just be themselves and write whatever they are feeling at that time. If what they are feeling is middle-aged, then so be it, incorporate those feelings into the lyrics and into their music.

As long as they keep the energy and intensity they have carried with them so far then the record will no doubt be brilliant. The fans will tell if the band are genuine and sincere or not, and if they sense any elements of false ideals, especially if these would show the band as selling out, then those fans would drift away.

I believe a shift back to older styles of punk would do the band good, as it not only would pay homage to their roots, but would unite older fans with newer fans. Doing this would be rather fitting too, as music fans are beginning to uncover a new found apreciation for 'retro' and 'old skool' styles and music, and whats better than a band that as grown from the old skool and that is still relevant, to re-develope those old styles that they started with and make them relevent in a modern age.

Posted by Dan | October 9, 2007 12:39 PM | Reply to this

Please......Green Day haven't been punk for a long time...

Hitting middle age has nothing to do with it.....how many other bands are still around years after they started and are just as exciting musically?

A lot of people are starting to be tired of having every song from American Idiot force fed down their throat every half an hour on music channels and I think Billie is just making excuses in case their next album fails to live up to expectation

I think they're new material will be in the direction of hair loss, initial signs of a beer belly and slight memory loss.

I look forward to seeing them perform in high-waisted trousers and socks with sandals :]

The album after this? Guys, your zimmer frames are in the post.

Rock our socks (and sandals) off in the meantime.

Posted by Frit | October 9, 2007 12:41 PM | Reply to this

I think the new material is going to combine elements from each previous album. Green Day now have nothing to prove after American Idiot, so they really have an opportunity to break any boundaries they have previously felt and been stuck behind.
I think the new material will be raw, kind of like Kerplunk! in elements, although I think we're gonna be hearing a bit more acoustic guitar, piano, and other layers that we haven't seen Green Day use so much before.
The guitar is going to be more layered and more complex than the three-chord stuff that we're used to, and we're going to have a mix of songs not unlike Nimrod. The long time between American Idiot and this new album means they've had a chance to experiment, try new things and see what's working and what isn't.
Overall, I think the album will have alot of similarities to Nimrod. If what is 'out there' is 'stagnant', Billie may look for inspiration in the classic artists like Dylan as he did with Warning, but with a rougher and rawer edge. One thing is for sure and that is we're not gonna hear something we've heard before, because Green Day have managed to produce new and amazing music with each of their albums.

ok, enough writing.
I'm meant to be doing homework but I know more about Green Day than I do about Macbeth (or anything else).

I'm not a massive Green Day fan anymore to be quite honest. "American Idiot" is a good album; but exactly that only! It didn't blow my mind. I was massively into them when Dookie was out; that was one of the best albums I've ever owned.

I'm sure whatever route Green Day decide to take on their new release; it will be great.

Age is just a number; as long as they still have pride and passion for their band and their music, then they can't go wrong!

Green Day proved with American IDiot that their later material is some of their very best, so why stop now? What's to say this album isn't gonna be as good, if not better?
We'll just have to wait and see, won't we?

Posted by Lindsay | October 9, 2007 12:46 PM | Reply to this

I think Green Day's new stuff will be even more hard-hitting than American Idiot, i think they have long passed the stage of writing songs with no real meaning behind them, i think they will learn from all their previous albums and combine the best of each. They know they have to top all of their previous albums, and they will make sure that they raise the bar once again.
I dont think feeling middle-aged will change the style that much, if bands like staus quo can still bring out albums true to themselves, then Green Day can without a doubt.

In the end, i know i will buy (and i'm sure love) whatever they release next and cannot wait.

Well...i think that Green Day's album will go in the direction that THEY want it to, it had nothing to do with the fact that Billie Joe feels "middle aged" the music will got the way the WHOLE band want it to go!.

Im sure that no matter what they do with the next album is going to be great anyway!. Billie Joe just needs to work through the problems he has and then everything will be sorted.

Posted by Heather MacDonald | October 9, 2007 12:54 PM | Reply to this

Wow?! i think the real issue here is that theyve been "working" on a new album for pratically 2 years (even though its obvious theyve been
trying to save the planet) and they still don't know where they are with album. I've been a really big fan for the last few years but i must admit its really fucking annoying when all the lead singer of your favorite band wants to do is try and be the next bono. Sort it out please. i don't care what the album sounds like, cos at this rate i feel like im not going to hear one.

Posted by Sarah | October 9, 2007 12:54 PM | Reply to this

The truth is, they are getting a bit middle-aged. But that doesn't necessarily mean they should stop music, not even the genre. But keep it evolving, and surprise everyone with something new over and over again.

They've come a long way, and they finally got some recognition. Sure, through the albums the music changed, but that's called evolving. And as a musician I think you should always keep evolving, and you should always try to improve yourself.

What they SHOULD do, is change the type of lyrics they write. They haven't been rebellious teens for ages, and still they measure themselves that image.

Although "American Idiot" was indeed a more grown, mature album, which was more politically directed, still the teenlike way of writing is obviously included. That's not necessarily a bad thing, because ofcourse their fanbase is founded on that. But the people who grew up with Green Day have also become older and more mature. So it's time to grow up (in a certain way).

The new generation will still listen and buy the albums, because the message will stay the same, and it will always attract the right audience.

I've been a Green Day fan for as long as I can remember and no matter what direction they decide to take I'll keep flying their flag with pride

Well they are middle-aged and are still a canny good band but i dont think they'll be able to make a better album than American Idiot.

Posted by Rii | October 9, 2007 1:00 PM | Reply to this

If there feeling middle aged it may be songs about the woes of going bald, the pitfalls of buying a large red sports car, and how you cant lose middle age spread!!! There should also be a few songs about the state of the system and cricket....

Posted by sue myhill | October 9, 2007 1:00 PM | Reply to this

I think it will pretty simmular to their new stuff... It just means they are thinking they might be too old to play such energetic songs.

Posted by Dollface | October 9, 2007 1:01 PM | Reply to this

well although Green Day are absolute ledgends i fear this may be there last album so i belive they should go back to the days of dookie but encorperate the sounds of american idiot to make it that slight bit heavier but other than that im looking forward to the release =]

I'm a goth that LOVES Greenday and whatever the guys come up with I'll like it. Tha'ts my opinion mind!

Posted by Georgie Watherhouse | October 9, 2007 1:14 PM | Reply to this

i think greenday are gods and i don't think people will think of the band differently because they have been around for a long time, i feel billie-joe should be proud of his work because he has so many people supporting him. I'm sure i will no matter what. I have been a fan for 9 years and i do miss there old music but i still love their new stuff...now thats commitment lol.

Posted by kimmi Dillon | October 9, 2007 1:14 PM | Reply to this

If Green Day can pull out an album thats better then American Idiot and Dookie, they should go for it and not worry about their age. You only live once and they've got skills. Lets just hope they do a tour to follow it up!

Posted by Daisy | October 9, 2007 1:18 PM | Reply to this

As good as their old stuff is, it's kinda weird watching a load of middle aged guys sing about teen issues, I think they should perhaps call it a day they've done a lot and it's been good so dont wreck ur reputation with one crappy half arsed album about being a coffindodger!
P.S: SEND MORE PARAMEDICS TORE LINCON A NEW ARSE LAST FRIDAY!

Posted by Gerry | October 9, 2007 1:19 PM | Reply to this

Every band has to grow up and throughout their career they've become more political and aware of the world rather than focusing on the trivial happenings of teenage life.
Whatever they plan to do next is just another step forward, whether it be for good or bad because there's no point in looking back.
American Idiot was a good album, not the best but good. The only reason it willl be hard for them to follow is because of all the publicity it generated.
But love them or hate them, they've been going for 20 years or so, and there are bands like Maiden and Metallica which are still going to this day. They have good albums and not so good albums so whatever the new Green day album sounds like, they'll still be around for a while yet.

Posted by Gem | October 9, 2007 1:28 PM | Reply to this

I dont like them that much, but i do think there direction will be more "U2-ish" and sing songs about love, peace and war, In a nice way.
Or on the other hand, they could be unlucky and sell out.
I do not think they will go back to there old punk days back in the 90's.

Posted by Liam Statham | October 9, 2007 1:29 PM | Reply to this

i think that green are just going to keep going more and more downhill because the america n idiot album was awful and insanly overplayed that the songs got annoying they wer good back in there day but now ther just pushing there luck to be honest. xx

Posted by Daniel Read | October 9, 2007 1:30 PM | Reply to this

I Think Green Day Are Going To Take More Of A "U2" Approach.
I Recon, Because There Getting Older, They Don't Want To Be Doing The Full Whack On Stage.
Maybe That Song They Did "The Saint's Are Coming" With Them Was A Hint ?
xx

Posted by Holly | October 9, 2007 1:32 PM | Reply to this

they are going to have a mid life crisis so probably go for folk. or they can carry on being down with the kids and try a bit of screamo.... now that will be cool/funny!!

Posted by aimee | October 9, 2007 1:35 PM | Reply to this

What can you really say about a decent punk rock band turned pop?
I quite like Green Days work in the early 90's, very lively and something to jump around to but their relese of American Idiot disapointed me. Now they are nothing more than pop bitches who are aimed to pre teen wannabe's.
I recon that thier new album will be simiar to American Idiot and stay the sell outs they have turned into.

Posted by Manna | October 9, 2007 1:41 PM | Reply to this

I used to bum Green Day. Not literally speaking of course. But I fear that this album is not going to be great. In fact it might just suck.
American Idiot was a good album yes, but only in the begining. The constant over play bored me.
Now they better take a stand and make me, and thousand other rock fans wanna listen or they'll be shoved to the back of the shelves and only be heard by the pre-teens.
It doesn't matter if they're middle aged as long as they have some balls!!

Posted by Sarah | October 9, 2007 1:52 PM | Reply to this

its a hard one. they'd either go completely not what they are - some rock ballady stuff or go back to PERFECT Green Day, like the classic stuff. i really wish they stick to the signiture Green Day sound... but i really doubt they do =[

still love em though!

Posted by Libby | October 9, 2007 1:56 PM | Reply to this

I’ve loved Green Day since the early days, and for me personally Dookie, Insomniac and Nimrod are the best sounding albums, signifying what they are really all about. I feared Superhits is going to be the end of the road for them, but the boys just kept going doing what they do best: playing great live gigs and writing more tunes. So what they got millions more fans in the process???

Their music and tunes have always been about how they felt in the moment and why should this change, there’s no new direction. Their hard-core fans aged with them, and I am positive it’s going to be a great album… I’ve been feeling ‘redundant’ for hell knows how long…

Posted by db | October 9, 2007 1:57 PM | Reply to this

theyve always sounded run of the mill and middle aged

so it will be just as crap as the last album

nuff said

Posted by colonopenant:( | October 9, 2007 2:02 PM | Reply to this

I think that they hate to admit that they're middle-aged now, and that's why they're going in a heavier direction.

Posted by Annie | October 9, 2007 2:03 PM | Reply to this

I have a feeling this will be their last album. It's gonna take a lot for it to be bigger than American Idiot, although I prefer their older music.

Posted by Jodie | October 9, 2007 2:03 PM | Reply to this

They are the reason i love 'rock' music first album i ever got was DOOKIE so they will always mean somthing to me though AI wasnt that great, they should end on a high and do a come back tour in 2030!

To Be Fairly Honest I Dont Think Their Music Will Change That Much. If Anythingf It Can Only Get Better... I Aint Been A Fan For Long But I Do Think They're Amazing And American Idiot Was They're Best Album

I love greenday i thaught american idiot was an amazing album that changed my life. with the new album i believe that the guys will go for a more chilled out aproach producing songs similar to 'working class hero' but i hope that they return to their roots and burst back with an amazing punk album so they can change my opinion on music all over again.

i cant wait for the album im sure what ever they decide to do it will be amazing.

Kinda obvious answer, but I reckon they'll go down the same route blink did when they recorded their self-titled album, maybe start doing some electronic drums etc and just a more 'mature' sound, more intelligent.

Posted by Woodrow | October 9, 2007 2:35 PM | Reply to this

They're feeling middle-aged cause they ARE middle-aged. The new album's going to sound like everything else Green Day have ever done

Posted by Mel Rhodes | October 9, 2007 2:40 PM | Reply to this

What direction will this new, more "middle-aged" material take?

I dont think that it will take a Middle Aged turn. I think that they will continue to create the music they love for the fans they love. It may be different to their eariler stuff but you can't just attagorise it into Middle Aged music because they are so. They will rock as much as usual, and be just as great whatever their age. =][=

I think perhaps it'll mature, not that they need to, they're energetic and crazy and that's the way we love them. Whatever they do I'll still love them, as there is no escaping the fact that they are a freaking kick-ass band.

Bring in a huge Greenday poster soon please K!?

To be honest, why are they bringing out another album? I used to like them. Until they turned into commercial mainstream whores. They're meant to represent punk, but i feel as if they've just corrupted nine year olds into believing their barely pop punk records are as good as songs created by true punk masters like the sex pistols and the clash. With one good word about them i believe they've already matured, and will coninue to do so. At least until their nine year old fans get bored of them and they have to retire anyway.

Posted by Rhiannon Taylor | October 9, 2007 3:22 PM | Reply to this

Green day rule and their next album should be really really really good. i can't wait. Green Day are my life. they were the reason i picked up a guitar.

Posted by ste | October 9, 2007 3:22 PM | Reply to this

theyve got such a huge fanbase i think whatever they bring out someone will like.
i see no problem with trying to appeal to a younger generation. you never know, these 9 and 10 year olds may go on to listen to other punk bands. you shouldnt damn them for trying to inspire people.

Posted by helena. | October 9, 2007 3:27 PM | Reply to this

I think they'll mature somewhat, I'm expecting something heavier than usual. And of course they feel middle-aged, they nearly are, it doesn't mean they can't make great music though. No matter what direction the new material is taking I don't think it'll be too different to the sound of the Green Day we already know and love, I think any major changes would've happened earlier in their career.

Posted by Nichola (: | October 9, 2007 3:35 PM | Reply to this

Well they will probably start singing about their midlife crisis and mental break downs... but to be fiar most rock start have some sort of mental issues so I think they will be ok

No Matter How Old They Are, They Still Are Green Day. They've Been Round For Ages And They'll Stay That Way. You Still Get Bands Performing And They're Older. They Have A Big Fanbase Who Love Everything They Release. Its The Riffs And The Out-Casted Lyrics That We All Love And Thats All That Matters.

doesn't mean there music is going to be any different!i !think GD are amazing! i love them! so i give them all my support and NO doubt there newest album will be just as great as the rest! American Idiot is such a life changing album. i wish them all the best!
I LOVE GREEN DAY! xxxxxxx

another album thats awesome....yes they are getting old but it doesnt matter coz theyll still be amazing but they kinda have a lot to live up to after american idiot.

Posted by ciara | October 9, 2007 3:50 PM | Reply to this

People say they feel too old, and I find that bullshit.
Ozzy is still out there, is he not?
Pink Floyd, Nirvana, The Rolling Stones are all still listened to.
It's not a question of age, it's a question of the music.
I don't want another album like American Idiot though, I think one 'Fuck George Bush' album is enough.

Posted by Livi | October 9, 2007 3:52 PM | Reply to this

I don't really mind what direction it goes and I don't think any other 'real' fans would either. As long as they're happy doing what they wanna do then we're happy too! They're a kick ass bad anyways and their stuff just keeps getting better!Oooooh yeah!Keep up the good work guys!!

I am a huge Green Day fan, I love everything they've done, right from Billie Joe's "Look For Love", to their cover of "Working Class Hero" earlier this year. I think they have an amazing, individual sound that's unlike any other punk band. Whatever they come up with this time is sure to be fantastic and a true reflection of life from those who really experience it.

Posted by Dani | October 9, 2007 3:55 PM | Reply to this

i think it would be pretty cool if they wrote about how many times a day they peed themselves, and how senile they are, but they are probably doing current events songs or something mmmm green day

Posted by Auryn | October 9, 2007 3:57 PM | Reply to this

i hope to god that they dont churn out a U2 type album. i have followed Green day ever since their famous Nativity scene gig in a wigan club. i fear though that they will not hit the mark and try to be too mainstream or chart success-like in their new album. The best thing would to go back to 1039 era and really shock people, but myself and others will no doubt buy whatever it sounds like....... please dont turn into BONO!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by Gary cunningham | October 9, 2007 3:59 PM | Reply to this

I think whatever Green day produce in their next album will be great. There old stuff was fab and american idiot was good, maybe this new album will be even better.
I look forward to hearing it.

I'm a huge fan; have been since forever. That is, I like the older stuff as well as the American Idiot-era stuff. They've churned out a lot of shit during the middle few albums though; it has to be said. I don't mind what direction it takes as long as it's of the same quality as their best songs have been in the past :]

Posted by nicky | October 9, 2007 4:05 PM | Reply to this

Green Day have been around for YEARS now, and they could have easily said that they're getting more middle-aged with each album release. I don't think their musical style will change, just the song writing will become more mature.

Posted by Lisa | October 9, 2007 4:06 PM | Reply to this

Green day are such a great band. i think that there new album will be about all the things they have been thow coz they have been thow a lot. what ever its like im sure it will be so great.

Green Day is not a random band ! they have a history and i totally believe in Green Day!So what if they feel middle-aged? they are mature now and their lyrics and their music will be even better!!! I can't wait for their new cd! I hope they'll come to GREECE sometime soon!!!
Keep up guys!!!

Feeling middle aged? PAH! think of Iron Maiden they've been going for years and they still manage to write amazing stuff and put on a good show. Just keep on going guys and you'll make it. you may wanna go back to the likes of Dookie however although it sold American Idiot was not your best work by far

Posted by Bethness | October 9, 2007 4:15 PM | Reply to this

Green Day mean everything to me,and if they decide to head in a different direction, then I'm behind them,no matter what.
As for what I think will happen with this new direction,I think they'll present us with something that's along similar lines to American Idiot, but perhaps with a little bit of this middle-aged feeling they claim to have (although a middle aged Green Day just doesn't exist). But I doubt they'll ever be able to return the good ol' days of Kerplunk,Dookie, and everything that followed.
Green Day are a brilliant band and they'll give us something to wow about.
Trust me. It's Green Day.

Posted by Forest | October 9, 2007 4:17 PM | Reply to this

Their new album could go either way. I fear this will be their last album but hopefully they wont try and become too mainstream otherwise the album will sound shit. i still love american idiot so hopefully it will stay that sort of music. i dont want them to change. and as for being middle age. who cares! they're great no matter how old they are!

i love green day they are one of the thew bands thats iv grown up lisoning to that i still like. Im sure when their new album comes out every1 will love it altho alot of people think their last album was a flop and alot of people say they dont like them anymore but im sure when there album comes out all the people that say they or crap will love them again but im sure this will get them straight back on top =]

All I can say is it's about time for a new album! But this middleaged feel that they have might not be so bad. I mean so many more legendary artists have made a big impact. If the album is a flop, I bet it is their last

If Green Day are feeling like different people inside (age-wise) then this will take a big toll on their music, it may sound different, it wil lsound how they feel and how they act, this may or may not be a good thing but it will be hard to follow their "american idiot" album.

Posted by Livvy | October 9, 2007 4:28 PM | Reply to this

green day used to be my favourite band, i mean i loved them. I was so disappointed when american idiot came out; im not saying its not a good album, because it is; but it just wasn't what i expected.

I would like very much if green day were to make an album along the same wavelength as nimrod or insomniac

And they're not very old. There are a lot of older band members around.

Who cares if they are middel aged if they produce good mucis then i dont =]
american idiot is a good album but i perfer the older stuff they did like dookie n nimrod if they did more of that then i would be happy but if they did more of the newer stuuf then i wudnt mind but the older stuff gets my vote!!

wel technically billy joe was 32 when american idiot came out so near enough to midlle aged then and they produced a fucking awesome album so even though now they feel middle aged im sure theyll produce something amazing whatever it is.

As much as i love American Idiot, i hope that with these "middle age" feelings, they realise a lot of thier fans prefer thier punkier songs. I hope that the new album will be more like 10/39 or Dookie, but i definately wouldn't moan if it turned out to be a second American Idiot.

Hands up who agrees that old Green Day was the real magic!? Don't get me wrong I loved American Idoit, But since their "New Direction" with American idiot ,Green Day have appeared to have set a trend and loads of bands have been doing the same and I have a hunch that G.D's new album is going to be nothing much different to their last. Where do you go after a dramatic change?
Hopefully Green Day have slightly ventured back to their old ways, but for know I'll cling on to Dookie and Insomniac, and pray that one of the only decent Pop punk bands left don't turn into American Idiot sellouts.

Middle-Aged Greenday? pfft...methinks they'll still be awesome. I'm guessing their lyrics might take a slightly more "We-so-know-what-we're-talking-about-don't-tell-us-what-to-do-we're-young-and-reckless-honest-we-swear" but i'm sure they'll have some kickass album.

i have recently gone off green day. theyre stuff they produced on their american idiot album was good but after that i kinda went off them.
i hope they dont go emo haha that'd be a laugh.
i think they might go a bit like sex pistols or the clash. that'd be nice. i'd definately have to listen to them again if they did.
but for now i still dont really like their newest msic.
sorry guys

ALRIGHT, DON'T GET ME WRONG YEAH, BUT I REALLY THINK THEY SHOULD JUST PISS OFF, AND LEAVE THE MUSIC SCENE TO NEWER, YOUNGER BANDS. I DON'T REALLY HAVE MUCH AGAINST THEM, OTHER THAN THE FACT THEIR MUSIC IS A LOAD OF SHITE, BUT I REALLY DON'T THINK THAT THREE MIDDLE-AGED DUDES BASICALLY TRYING TO MAKE A "COMEBACK" IS GOING TO GO DOWN SO WELL WITH SOME PEOPLE... ME INCLUDED. SORRY

You can tell that if they think they are 'middle aged' then their work will reflect that... So I can imagine some acoustic and some slower tracks. The opposite of Dookie that's for sure!

Green Day don't do old! I expect their music will still have that amazing angst to it! If it doesn't, I ain't buying it.

Posted by Livvy | October 9, 2007 4:52 PM | Reply to this

Green Day don't do "old" - it would be slightly hypocritical since most of their music is about fucking up the system ..... It would be a laugh to see Green Day do Granpa music though!

I've never been a fan of greenday, and In my opinion, Greenday are totally overrated. I think the new album will just sound like their others - just a little toned down.

I love Green Day and all there work has been amazing i just think with them turning mid thirtys i hope its more mature and classic rock than jumpy because to be honest billie joe jumping round after all those fags! Whoop heart attack!

Ergh!
I hope they dont do a blink 182 on us and come out with something "completly differnt to anything else they've done" and it turns out to be a pile of shit!
If they just stay with some good old greenday stuff then they should be fine and they have no reason to feel old!

reat band, but theyve come to the point now where they can release any style of music and people will still buy it. even if they did a country-esc album, im sure theyd still sell millions of records.

Well I love Green Day, however, I am slightly wondering about what they are going to produce next, seeing as their last album had gotten political (though i still majorly liked it), is the next one going to simply follow on from that? Although, it annoys me when people say that they've become to political and their old music was better, how can they write meaningful music about teenage angst etc, like they used to, when that's not what's important to them anymore?! Of course their music style will differ and become more mature, because they've grown up! Whatever it's like, I'm sure it'll still be amazing. x

Green Day are awesome!
And anything they do is just gonna keep getting better! :)
And their not that old so their music's still gonna be great! :)

Lots of bands get old but it doesn't effect thier performance. Iron Maiden, Ozzy Ozbourne, Red hot Chilli Peppers, prime examples. As long as thier song don't start bein about, back pains and hair loss it'll still rock!

Finally! As much as I love Green Day, they've taken their time!!! I just hope their last album wasn't the best they could do, and that they'll keep getting better.

Posted by Anya | October 9, 2007 5:17 PM | Reply to this

IMO Green Day should go back to their roots. They should do something REALLY punk. They should go and listen to some of their earlier albums. They are older now. They need think about what inspires/inspired them and say something about it. Y'know.

Anyhoo... Green Day rock... blah blah blah... Yay Green Day... etc... just my opinion, don't like, sue me. Don't really.

Also, Laura "wel technically billy joe was 32 when american idiot came out so near enough to midlle aged then"

Are you expecting them to die before they hit 65?? Doubt it,

The direction of "awesome".

Posted by Rosie | October 9, 2007 5:22 PM | Reply to this

I think they should still stay true to their roots, but also make something completely new.
That may sound like a hard challenge, but if anyone can do it then Green Day can.
Or better still if they have 45 Songs release to sepearate albums, one more punk and more mellow or whatever direction they are aiming at.

Posted by J-man | October 9, 2007 5:28 PM | Reply to this

i think Green Day after their big success with "American Idiot" they will have the same motive to sell out. they're going to be legends sth like U2

Posted by Costas | October 9, 2007 5:29 PM | Reply to this

I think that, tho Green Day IS middle-aged band, they're still young like...Tré inside! So they WILL make fucking great album. Sure, they coul'd just make some crap, and people would still buy it, because of American Idiot's succsess, but I think that they wont do that. I think, that when Billie writes a song, he just isn't thinking "Oh, I can't figure out a line here, so I'll just write some random stuff that goes thro my mind, like what I ate today."
I think the songs may not be like Basket Case and Judge's daughter mixd up together, but they will be GREAT!

Posted by Julia | October 9, 2007 5:37 PM | Reply to this

I think whatever they come up with will be amazing. Now they've gotten out the shadow of Dookie and have a different sound they could do almost anything and still sound incredible.

Billie is right, music at the moment is starting to sound all the same. and going in the same direction. Its either emo or heavy metal. Time for something new and honest to come onto the scene, and I recon they can do it!

Age shouldn't worry them, I recon they'll still be going for a long time. Ten years later they'll still be telling us things are fucked up and I'll listen to them. They should just do what feels right. Go with their gut instinct and not let anyone tell them otherwise. Thats what punk is.

Posted by Whatsername | October 9, 2007 5:40 PM | Reply to this

Well tbh i think that whatever direction they are going in, it will be worth it.
So Billie Joe is feeling middle aged, well he kinda is, but it doesnt stop he being a musical genious.
I think that their new album will be as good as American Idiot, with a touch of their punk roots.
I just really hope that isnt a way of saying this is their last album coz they are fantastical =]

They are an amazing band, so what they're feeling middle-aged. Middle aged rockers still make rockin music. I think (and hope) the next album will be just as good as any other

Posted by Josefin | October 9, 2007 5:58 PM | Reply to this

Heyy,

To be honest, if Green day are seeing themselves to be middle aged, then their music will not be as offensive anymore.

Yes it will still be meaningful and affect people, but it will probably take more of a slower edge to it, because i doubt that a band that are feeling old are blast out an album like "Dookie"

their music will still be great, but i think that the new album will take more of a "Working class hero" attitude, slower and possesive

thanks,

Jack,

PS get some more bring me the horizon in here!

I love them more than anything in this life. I grew up listening to their music, and I can't get enough of them... This middle age material that they are workig on it's normal, they arent 25 anymore! If they are older the music has to show whar they are felling and how the see the world... Maybe this will be their best album... Who knows?
Let's wait and, then listen!

so what if it sounds different?

its called CHANGE
ROCK ON GREEN DAY!!!!!

i can't wait for their new album
i reckon their new sound will be less punky and more grown up then the past albums. whatever direction they will go in musically the album will still definatly be worth the wait!

Posted by anna | October 9, 2007 6:35 PM | Reply to this

I think they should basically just do what they want, but make it memorable since it could be their last album. The rest of their stuff has been super so just as long as they don’t loss the skill of good song writing after all these years, I’m sure whatever Green Day produce next will be great :)

Posted by Tara | October 9, 2007 6:36 PM | Reply to this

I don't think age should have anything to do with how great the music is.
Age doesnt seem to have any effect on bands such as Iron Maiden, Ozzy or Megadeath, they're still all legends, if not a little 'mature', so I think as long as Greenday do what they always do, and put everything into this album, it'll be amazing!
Rock on! \m/

Posted by Katie-Jane | October 9, 2007 6:37 PM | Reply to this

Personally, I'd love to think they will continue making fantastic music like they have, but obviously there's going to be a change. Bands rarely change between albums, because it would sound boring if they just did the same thing again!

I think that they're going to stay political with strong lyrics. They're not the same boys singing about drag queens and masterbation anymore! They've grown up.

Saying that, they've not passed their prime, so it's not like they're going to start singing about pensions or whatever. It's just gonna have a different outlook. They've changed, so will their music.

Either way, I can't wait to hear the new album. I'm sure they'll make something special of it.

I mean come on if all the guys from MCR (love Frank!) still get comments like 'there fit' 'I love Frank' and 'I love Gerard he's well fit!' and there all basically all 3o, and as far as I know the guys in Green Day are all younger than that and do look quite nice!!
I am so looking forward 2 there new album can't wait!

so no i dont think anyone even green day are too old for rock and roll baby!

Omg! Beleive me Im a HUGE fan! And If there music takes a completley different path I will be there 100% behind them! Greenday were the first band that got me Into Punk Music! They hold many memories of watching the Bullet dvd with my mate!

I have loved this band for a good few years and Billie gets more sexier and hotter every time I see him!

Only thing I have too say is BRING BACK THE BLACK BILLIE!<3

hopefully the kind of direction that will stop them from featuring in the next installment of 'smash hits' top trumps cards or being splashed across the cover of 'smash hits' and have it mock me from the shelf of the newsagents

If he's feelung a bit more middle-aged these days, then chances are this stuff could be a bit less heavy, bit mellower stuff, or then again, he could just go back to when he was younger and try and recreate the earlier stuff.
Whatever they do, shall be interesting, as you can never be too old to rock out, just look at Led Zep...

I Love Greenday As Much As The Next Person. But To Be Frank They ARE Getting Older, It Would Be Best To Walk Out At There Highest And Be Remembered Than Leave When Theyre Forgotten. But Im Not Saying I Want Them To Stop. Hopefully Their New Material Will Be Brill.

So they're a little bit older, it's not like their last release was 10 years ago! It's also not like their latest work has been really crap. So why question whether they should throw in the towel? Look at Serj Tankian, he's a rock grandpa and still going strong. I think people shouldn't complain about a band carrying on as long as their music's still good, which it is. GD have matured with age already, i'm pretty sure that their next album will be more of the same sort of think as American Idiot, i'm sure we'll like it whatever.

If their direction was based on age and the mood of their latest videos, I would say that GREEN DAY could end up somewhere between John Lennon and Bono. :) Maybe they could name their next effort REVOLUTIONARY SAINTS. I do dig GREEN DAY and I understand the feeling of needing change, being that I am a musician myself. Hats off to ya mates.

i think there are many 'greenday fans' who will disagree with this and i'm not saying they're shit because i do think that they have made alot of good music in they're time but i think they shud have quit whilst ahead because i can c them crashing to the ground xxx

I think green day should go back to there roots, go back and listen to all the albums that inspired them made them want to make a band and make it big. Listen to all the songs they did when they were younger, listen to the songs that influenced them the most t
Thats what i think green day should do!

so glad to hear that they are making some new music. been dying to receive some 'real' music =) i'm a well big fan, and i think that they will be like American idiot, with extra Rock, like their old stuff, because at the moment we need some good old rock music. they should keep going, not give up. WE NEED GREEN DAY!

they will be a success anyway with their new stuff. long terms fans would really appreciate having some new stuff from their favorite band. i know i would,

keep rockin green day!

I'm so happy that a new album is coming out, its awesome. As for the sound of it, i doubt anything Green Day write could sound middle-aged! It would probably sound more mature, maybe, but not middle aged...
Besides, what do the rest of the band say? It may just be Billie being over-anxious...

Posted by Eleanor | October 9, 2007 8:19 PM | Reply to this

Well you gotta hand it to them, they are amazing and really good, they make really good and whoever knows them knows that they will come out with a great follow up to American Idiot probably even better cuz come on!!! they are Green Day after all.. I know it will come out soon enough and i will wait any time for it to come out, i am a fan and i will not change my mind just because they make me wait a little bit for a mindblowing album to come out, im 100% sure its gonna be amazing just like always..

Posted by green freak | October 9, 2007 8:34 PM | Reply to this

u have got to b serious!!!!!!!! what do u mean American Idiot wasnt good enough? I mean, it was a big change for them and their pop-punk roots, but plz!!! it was amazing! it might not be ur favorite, neither is it mine but still it was an amazing album, u cant deny that...

Posted by green freak | October 9, 2007 8:39 PM | Reply to this

I think they'll go for a sort of 'Boulevard of broken dreams' album style. Their material is great anyway so i don't think it matters, they will always be a great band....

Posted by Carli | October 9, 2007 8:54 PM | Reply to this

To be honest I don't care.
Their last album was shit and they are now trying to please the fans.
They should go back to making music how they did in the early 90s, where it was basically them writing funny songs. Now its all the American Idiot shit.
However you are never too old to make music.

Posted by Lisa | October 9, 2007 9:10 PM | Reply to this

Green day is awesome. I think they sound mix the power of Dookie with the sound of American Idiot. Mind-blowing. That's what we want.

There's only one way they could make me sad, and that's by making alot of Boulevard Of Broken Dreams-ish stuff. It's amazing for this one song, but too much of it wouldn't fit them.

Posted by Jorick | October 9, 2007 10:30 PM | Reply to this

I've been waiting for their new album for ages. I suppose it's good they are taking their time, to make it the best that they can, but still I'm getting kind of anxious.

I think that their new album will be more slow and more acoustic with one or two songs that are really fast and loud, kind of Insomniac/ American Idiot style. I don't know why, but it just seems right as they feel "middle-aged".
So in my mind I'm picturing a Warning type of album, but with lyrics about feeling middle-aged and having to face that, and one or two songs that are just plain pissed about getting older.

And in my mind, that sounds kinda cool, so I'm definitively looking forward to their new album, whenever it comes.

When they say, that they feel middle-aged,so it tells us,don't expect the same as we have been doing up until now.Time for change.i think this record will be musicaly completly different something new.more rock than punk.
but still can come out with a great record{sound} as they have grown older.

i ahve been listening to green day since the beggining i am stoked for the new ablum. but they are such fucking sell outs. they went from the grugy pop punk who gives a fuck kids to the emo glam rockers they are today. their overall product is good. but now they ahve all these fucking poser ass kids who buy all their clothes from hot topic screaming green day. and slitting their wrists till the next album drops. riding Tre is cool in blood. Come on Greenday give us another NIMROD.

I like Greenday and i especially like thier albums 'American Idiot' and 'Internetional super hits'. If they are going to take on somthing a little more middle aged then it would probably sound somthing like Bon Jovi or Dio as they may chose to leave the pop/punk scene. But their origional music will still be good.

I Like Greenday but Im Not Sure About The New Album, I didnt much like American Idiot. Maybe The New Album will Be Less Punk, an Acustic Song Or Two. They won't try so much 'Teenage Angst' in it. And Chances are the new album will be more about love and less 'Fuck The World' like most of the music is now. Greenday are a good band but Im Not Sure, Bands lose it after a few years and it has been... many years.

Well, really... I've been a fan since in between Kerplunk!/Dookie era, and I really don't think any of their new stuff is quite up to their old standards. Especially since albums since Shenanigans and Nimrod which I must admit were pretty amazing. I wasn't very impressed with their last two singles (The Saints Are Coming, Working Class Hero), so I really don't believe that an album worth of material up to those standards is going to be very good. Either way, beating American Idiot is going to be a difficult job.

Posted by Katy Geeee | October 10, 2007 4:33 PM | Reply to this

Sorry Kerrang I`m not on MySpace! LOL! When is that album gonna cum out?! They`ve been recording it since 2005 and they say they have 3 album`s worth of material so why don`t they just release something? Because, no matter what they release, they can`t top American Idiot. That album was LEGEND. xxx

Posted by Keeva | October 10, 2007 4:55 PM | Reply to this

Basically, they were at their best during the Dookie era, and there's no way they're going to top that. Their songs back then were better and less political than they are now, although I like Jesus Of Suburbia, although Im not much of a Green Day fan any more.

Posted by AmyHavok | October 10, 2007 5:34 PM | Reply to this

Let me just add onto my last comment cos I bet you`ll all start cummin up with comments like "Let them take their time". All I'm tryng to say is, if they`ve recorded 3 albums of material, how can all of that material be useless? Say they`ve recorded at least 40 songs, could they not be able to get at least 13 songs out of that? It seems like I`ve been waiting a LIFETIME for this album to cum out and, like sum others, I do think it will be their last. Even so, I bet it will be FANTASTIC. xxx

i reckon their new sound will be less punkier than the past albums and its definatly not gonna be as huge as american idiot or dookie but whatever direction they go in i'm sure the new album will be worth the wait

American Idiot was a classic album. It was quite different from their other albums, agreed but it was still an amazing Green Day moment! From the headbangers that are American Idiot and St.Jimmy to the slower, more personal songs such as Give Me Novacaine and Whatshername, every song screams individuality. Green Day wanted to break away from the genre everyone was placing them under and they achieved that with class. To say American Idiot wasn't good enough is to deny an amazing moment in punk rock.

This is great news. Me and my friend were really into Green Day a while back but because they hadn't released anything in so long we kinda drifted away from Green Day. I hope that the next album is as good as the previous.

I've been a Green Day fan since I was 8 since my older sister was 14 and was just getting into them then. I can honestly say in my opinion American Idiot, while an amazing album, wasn't as good as some of their pervious albums.

I think this middle aged theme might go back to some of their old songs when they were feeling old but instead of feeling old with their dreams unfufilled (The Grouch off of Nimrod) they can pull some sounds of American Idiot into it to create an amazing abum. I'm excited for this album.

It also maybe Green Day's last album and I'm okay with that because everyone in the Green Day trio has a life outside of Green Day and so they might just feel it's time to slow down and spend more time with their families, which I'm sure any fan could accept.

I am a huge green day fan.
i think they are amazing.

i also think within the early years of their music career they mainly sang about smoking pot and masturbation. as good as that music was, towards the album american idiot the boys have grown up a lot more and realized that the world has more to it than smoking pot and masturbation. and began to express more feelings about the world. and can you call them sell outs for this?

the new album should be realy good. hopefully a mix of all their albums they have created. i cant wait :)

xx

Greenday was wat got me into music i didnt listen to music at all in till 2 years ago and obviously got stuck into it since im here commenting.

personally i would like to hear either a heavier or more ambient song from greenday with perhaps a topic that would suit the feel heavy or ambient songs can create.

Perhaps the ignorance of people and one thing that i can never manage to express enough the fact that people need to accept their weaknesses and that they have weaknesses if greenday were able to express that its possible the world could become a better place, except at rap concerts...

American Idiot was a great album, its is the first and (almost) only album i know every word too!!

I seen them live (Milton Keynes) and they did the album justice, they were amazing!!

I do however hope that earlier albums like 'Dookie' and 'Nimrod' will be remembered....

They have alot to live up to with the next album (nothing epic though please, American idiot was overplayed much to much)!!

Posted by Dan Crosfield | October 14, 2007 9:50 PM | Reply to this

Dude, people are allowed to not like the bands you do. Fuck, this is why i've lost respect for MCR. Not because their music has gone down-hill (it hasn't!) but thse new fans are idiots! "Lyke omg, if u dunt lyke mcr ur just a stoopid person". Ranting, ah. :-)

Posted by Amanda | October 15, 2007 7:42 AM | Reply to this

I really hope they go back to their Dookie-ish style; I thought that American Idiot was their poorest album. The lyrics topped all the other albums, but I thought the music was predictable and repeatitive. This is not to say I don't like the album, because I love it, I just don't think it is a patch on their 90's stuff.
I reckon that Billie Joe feels middle aged because American Idiot was so ongoing; it was a long tour and the music was played EVERYWHERE. It got sold out. Which was not Green Day's fault of course, but I think that the monotony has got to them. So I reckon we can expect a change of style in their next album, to refresh them.
Oooh I'm all excited about it now!! xD

Toodle pip for now Kerrang!, you rock major sockage!

Posted by Jocy | October 15, 2007 11:38 AM | Reply to this

I have huge respect for the seriousness with which Billie Joe approaches songwriting. I respect that he wants to be honest and come up with something genuine and true: that’s what has always made Green Day great after all. But I also think that following up a masterpiece like American Idiot is a thankless task. No matter what they do, the reaction is likely to be that the new work doesn’t measure up to the artistry of American Idiot, even if the new album does in fact deliver all of the power and beauty of its predecessor.

Posted by Delfina | October 16, 2007 12:02 AM | Reply to this

I'm so damn happy that Green Day's new album is coming out, even if it is in another year. At least theyre still making music and not just dying out like most of the bands around these days. Green Day have come so far since 1039/SOSH, and they've accomplished so much from being a small underground punk band in Berkeley. And I read what that stupid fag from the Sex Pistols, Johnny Rotten, had to say about Green Day, saying they stink and they jumped on a band-wagon made out for them. I mean jeez get a life if Green Day were some smelly band they would have never made it this far. Billie Joe, Mike and Tre struggled to get this far to the point that they are making their 11 album pretty much. I believe that thats a real accomplishment and Green Day should keep doing what they do best, even if one of their idol bands frontman doesn't like their. Green Day rock and without them punk rock music wouldn't still be around! Keep rocking Green Day

I've loved Green Day for as long as I can remember, and I'm so glad they're bringing out new material! I'll only be able to tell whether I like it or not when I hear it obviously, but I think they are great to be trying out this new 'more middle aged' music style.
I wish them luck!

Okay guys bash Green Dayn all you want. No one cares. One of the greatest things about the Green Day trio is that they don't care what people think of them. Also if they want to try a new diretion let them, because at this point in their careers with all these new young bands coming out they have every right to feel old.

Also come on teenies, I put up with you and try not to get angry, but at least get the band's name right. It's Green Day, not greenday or even Greenday! There is a space!

don't copy anyone?!
Hahaha they're about as original as toast
They ripped the punk bands that came before them and turned it into no good pop
Also why is kerrang calling them a punk rock trio when there clearly pop rock?

I've got a feeling that Green Day is going to be in the mood to go back to their older sound. I mean, American Idiot was fantastic, but recently I've started falling in love with songs from 1,039/Smoothed Out Slappy Hours; they feel fresh, new and like they communicate with me.
I'm behind the band whatever route of sound they decide to take.

Man I love those guys and can't wait for their next album but if waiting awhile longer means that the album will come out when they feel the time is right that's fine.
As for it being about feeling middle aged, the whole reason their musics so good is because you can tell it's about thier own lives so their songs should change with their age.

I have been waiting for a new green day album for nearly 5 years I can't wait!
Billie Joe is so skilled to be able to play lead guitar and and sing at the same time, Tre Cool is just the best drummer ever and Mike Dirnt is just an awesome back-up singer and lead bass.

Personally, I disagree with a lot of things people are saying. EVERYTHING Green Day have done has been great in some way and there is no way in hell or beyond that they could ever go poppy or anthing like that. I also don't think American Idiot was overplayed at all. It's possibly my favourite album EVER! And the whole ge thing? No offence, but mid/late 30s isn't actually that old.
