Tom DeLonge: "In my own words"

With their second album, I-Empire, due to land on November 5, Angels And Airwaves frontman Tom DeLonge has written a new band biography exclusively for Kerrang!. Below he details the heartbreak he felt when Blink 182 split and how prescription drugs have been messing with his mind.

Here it is them Tom DeLonge "In my own words."

"Years ago on a tour in Australia, Joe Strummer from the Clash bought me a gift. He handed me a cartridge, meant for the use of rolling 'smokable items', and said these words:

'I used to walk around saying 'Fuck you, I'm in The Clash, Fuck you, I'm in The Clash!' ..well now that I think about it, The Talking Heads were pretty fucking cool.'

"Unbeknownst to me, he and his son were quite the big fans. It was a small lesson that changed everything for me. As a kid I used to live and breathe only punk rock music, truthfully, and somewhat myopically. But the advice was simple, open your eyes, appreciate honest art, because honest art can change the world.

"So the very next day I flew back to the US, away from Mr Strummer, and the conversation with the now late Clash front man was forever echoing in the back of my mind.

"As a teenager, it was far to easy to judge music and rank bands unfairly against others. And most often it was done most ignorantly. But every once in a while, someone comes along with a bit of well-oiled experience and hints of the ever changing temperature right at the step of our door. As when the great Pete Townshend once did, as he personally compared my band to his (The Who), in front of a crowd of thousands in San Diego. And as he quieted the large crowd to a ghostly whisper, he explained we represented a new and electrifying generation of youth, 'to my son, Blink-182 is THE WHO... Now that's a bit of a line to swallow, but he said it, and I shall choose to brag about it.

"I think as you get older you shed the burden of who is cooler, and the question is, who is honest, because that's what in the end is truly cool.

"Angels And Airwaves created We Don't Need to Whisper two years ago, amongst a lot of unanswered questions. To be searching for the new and correct path in life while I personally was losing my mind, well, it was quite a marathon to say the least, and also a drastic understatement.

"The stress came in part from my decision to quit my band Blink-182, to start a new band, a new family and choosing to do it while being spun out on pain killers for a shattered disc in my back. All of which started as a young teenager, and exists in an even worse condition to this day. Many years of treatment have turned into quite a euphoric ride, one that almost killed me during the launch of the first Angels And Airwaves record. Well, truthfully, it ended up painting an odd picture to the world, and the press alike... Even if we were getting the most incredible reviews I have ever gotten.

'It's potential is a force to be reckoned with...' Billboard

'The songs are every bit the anthems he wants them to be...' NY Post

'The results are some stunning moments of perfection....' Kerrang!

"These were all life changing events... But it was the truth, the message behind this band, that inevitably made me practice what I was preaching... If you can just see yourself differently in the world around you, then the world around you will change, and possibly the world itself.

"I-Empire is the second half of our first album. It reflects an idea that the world is yours for the taking, and all that exists, exists inside you. It can be something as trivial as a personal struggle, or as grand as the inescapable idea of world peace.

"To help the story along, the cover was commissioned and painted by the brilliant Drew Struzan, the artist best known for his work with Steven Spielberg and George Lucas. He can sum up a complicated story in a few beautifully planned brush strokes.

"The drums are by Atom Willard, from the critically acclaimed Rocket From the Crypt. He has always felt to me like the single largest score in music. He is a loyal, honest and humble friend, but an even better showman.

"Rhythm guitarist David Kennedy, is the one person I can always rely on to keep us doing what ever it is we believe in, regardless of the outside temperature. None of this would exist today without him, and none of this would feel quite as cool. I call him the James Dean of punk rock, as he is often spotted on his motorcycle unifying the coasts of the mainland US.

"Matt Wachter, on bass guitar, is our last, but invaluable addition. He hails from the much-revered 30 Seconds to Mars, and was the final missing ingredient to our group. He naturally understands music can and should be communicated through multiple forms and shapes, like cinema, graphic arts, new-media etc...

"Finally, with this album we will be releasing two films. One, is a documentary full of CGI (motion graphics), performance, and beautiful cinematography. It is the story of the genesis of Angels And Airwaves.

"The other is a motion picture set to expand the philosophical message behind the latest album. As an artistic representation of our music, it is in a category all its own. Not to be placed in tandem with most usual narrative stories, we hope this breeds a standard of what bands can do if they just try.

"Please take a short 55 minutes to enjoy the album. Listen to it blasting from your car, maybe on a hill over-looking a city...and all the while, pretend that the city, as it stretches far beyond the horizon, is all yours for the taking."

Tom DeLonge, Angels And Airwaves, an American rock band.

Okay so that article was a bit big headed but at the same time, he IS bloody great and has alot to brag about!
People that immediatly cast him off are the ones who hate him for destroying blink 182, BUT NOW WE HAVE TWO MORE BANDS TO LOVE!!!!

Posted by LeeAnn | October 26, 2007 6:06 PM | Reply to this

AVA are boring as fuck
but tbh im glad he split blink up
now i can love (+44), without having to like that twat.
I saw them live last year and someone at the concert literally fell asleep
he's helped mark and travis by splitting up blink
but hes shit on his own career, coz AVA are a pile of shit.

Posted by Steph | October 26, 2007 6:08 PM | Reply to this

While I do agree Tom is getting too big-headed and over-exaggerating how great his music is now...

...at least I'm trying to appreciate the music without letting what he says get in the way. Some people like the music, and while I'm not their biggest fan, I'm one of them. So give it a rest. Quit comparing AVA to Blink, because from the very first little musings we heard from AVA we knew it was a drastic change.

Some people prefer Blink to AVA. Fair enough. Yes, given the choice I'd love for Blink to come back, but as reality goes - it ain't happening. Get over it.

"Angels And Airwaves created We Don't Need to Whisper two years ago, amongst a lot of unanswered questions. To be searching for the new and correct path in life while I personally was losing my mind

- you musta been losing your mind when you came up with that pile of bollocks called an album.

But not being too harsh, there were some good songs on it. I say good. Lets hope I-Empire lives up to its 'mind-blowing' status that DeLonge has given it.

Posted by Ellis | October 26, 2007 6:16 PM | Reply to this

Tom Delonge is the greatest man alive.
Saying that he's up is own ass is ridiculous.
Everyone would love Blink to come back but now it's about 2 bands.
If ur a blink fan u should support both bands and it's about the music and you can't go out and say that angels and airwaves music is crap because thats false and everyone knows it.

Posted by Jono | October 26, 2007 6:22 PM | Reply to this

ridiculous?

no offence but did you actually read the article? he is up hs own arse,

but i agree with the rest of what you said. :]

Posted by LeeAnn | October 26, 2007 6:24 PM | Reply to this

okay hes a bit big headed now, but he pretty much has reason to be, having been in 3 amazing bands!

i love AVA but he thinks too much of their music, it's not as fucking epic as he sees it

i respect him too much to just write him off for getting a bit bigheaded

:) end.

Posted by samantha | October 26, 2007 6:28 PM | Reply to this

what?
that told us nothing.
he truly is up his own arse.

+44 in my opinion are better than blink anyway, there's no whiny vocals from the egotistical ponse.

yeah or something like "In my own WORLD" where everyone is a mini tom delonge and they all run round screaming about how they own the motherfucking world.

Posted by sophie | October 26, 2007 6:55 PM | Reply to this

If you people don't like Tom - why are you reading the article, you morons?

I personally love Tom, and I hope he never stops making music.

AVA are NOT boring. They are amazing. Even if you don't like Tom, it's not fair to judge the band on him. There are other members you know.

I miss blink as much as the next over-obsessed fan... but that's no reason for you guys to hate on AVA.

And stop comparing AVA to (+44). They are two completely different bands, who both play completely different styles of music. They are both amazing in their own way.

Tom is great - and when I read that article on MySpace last night, I was so happy.

If you don't like Tom, don't read articles on him. And if you really do have to read them, then at least be kind enough to not leave a comment stating how much you despise him. It's stupid.

OK, rant over =-)

Tom DeLonge is awesome, and so is this article. Can't wait for I-Empire!

Posted by Patsy | October 26, 2007 7:14 PM | Reply to this

People only like AVA because of the face of Tom DeLonge if he wasn't in the band no one would give 2 fucks about them. It's nothing about the music.

The music is basically lyrics from Box Car Racer and blink's song "I'm Lost Without You"

One day he'll realise that Blink we're one album away from completly taking over the world. The next album would have made American Idiot fail. It's just common sense.

Posted by Dan Harrington | October 26, 2007 7:43 PM | Reply to this

I loved Blink, thought they were awesome, but I really don't like AVA!
Seriously, I listened to the music before reading his "OH-MY-GOD-LISTEN-TO-ME-I'M-MISTER-FUCKING-WONDERFUL" comments.
And I got bored!
I like +44 though.
And yes, I understand when people say, "If you don't like Tom Delonge then don't read articles on him".
Well maybe people are giving him a chance to redeem himself for being an arogant twat, like I try to do, everything I read is just him bigging himself up.
Notice. Mark and Travis DON'T do that.
Tom has let fame go to his head and now its well overinflated.
At least Mark and Travis have stayed with their feet firmly on the ground.

but you really dont have to judge his band because you hate delonge!
i miss blink 182 as much as any other blink fan trust me but jus dont hate him for what he did because like other people said we have +44 aswell!

any way i could rant loads more bout this subject im gonna leave it here, jus think about it all you delonge haters..

and when i buy that album i'm going to kiss the guy at the counter who sells it to me.
and i love tom.
very much.

and yeah, obviously i started listening to AVA through Tom but Dave,
Adam + Matt are great too.

I think Tom Delonge rocks!
But obviously what he did to blink 182 sucked - they were a great band.
But you shouldnt slate Angels.. for that as well, its not their fault.
We still have +44
but i would love blink 182 to reform!! that would rock hard!!

Why are you comparing these bands to one another?

They aren't trying to be the same band so give them some respect and stop trying to beat one band down with another.

Does no one else see that there are other members in AVA not just him?

Blink aren't gonna come back, get over it. If you done like the bands that have formed as a result of blink spliting, then don't listen to it.

Not rocket science is it.

Posted by Jodie | October 26, 2007 9:42 PM | Reply to this

Agree he's up his own ass.

But just leave it at that?

Because seriously.......we really shouldn't give a fuck about him. He fucked up blink and now he's in AVA.
So like....
I just gave up caring about "his magical life of AVA and why blink broke up" SHIT and moved on.

=-]]

But really.?

You don't see the other two bragging about Blink and how sad they were and drugs and shizzum.
So apffft.

=/

I'll move on from caring thanks.

You know what? Some of you need to get over the fact the Blink aren't coming back. Yeah, i wish they were too but they aint.

Secondly, sure Tom may be up his own arse, but did you ever think that the way he might be now? Most people don't like it, but is it really the way the band act or is it about the music?

Tom puts 100% into everything he does, his family and his job. He's making the music that he loves. He's moved on from the immature Blink songs that everyone loves.

So you know what? Stop fucking bad mouthing Tom. [And oh my god i sound like fucking Chris Crocker :/]

Ahhhh People Dont Understand Do They,
They Dont Understand Why Thomas Is Doing What He Is Doing

Its Not Because He Is Up Himself,
He Isn't Doing It For Himself, He Is Doing It For Us.

We Don't Need To Whisper Clearly Was A Breath Of Fresh Air From The Less Than Fabulous Self Titled Blink Album, Blink Seemed To Lose There Touch During That Album, It Was Almost As If They Didn't Wanna Be There Anymore.
Not That I Didn't Adore The Album Or Anything Like That Because I Do, It Gets Played Everyday.

Angels and Airwaves Have Brought Something Different To The World Of Music, A Feeling Of Hope, A Feeling That Overwhelms Me Every time I Hear There Music.

Angels and Airwaves Are Nothing Like Plus 44 So There Is No Point Comparing Them. They Have 1 Thing In Common They Both Have Members From Blink In Them. So Come On Everyone Seriously Stop Being So Immature And Get Over The Fact Blink Are Gone It Pains Me To Say It But Its True

Long Live Angels and Airwaves

"Secret Crowds Rise Up And Gather"

Posted by Reuben Bateson | October 28, 2007 9:36 AM | Reply to this

Angels and airwaves are good and are way better than +44. fair enough to tom to ignore critiscm and just get on with AvA. he is not boring all the songs that he has made have meaning he has put everything that he has felt into wdntw and i-empire. +44 are good but they just remind of blink obviously but mark and travis without tom will not work its just not the same but o well.

Posted by Tom | October 28, 2007 11:33 AM | Reply to this

Tom Delonge needs to realise that his music will not change anything. "We dont need to whisper" was dull and had no impact on music today or the way people live their lives. Blink 182 wrote good pop songs, but nothing that should be considered classic. Tom needs to get down from his pedastal and realise that dreary songs about love will do nothing to change the world. If they did, then the Spice Girls would still be better than them.

Posted by Sam Craddock | October 28, 2007 2:50 PM | Reply to this

I-Empire is amazing. I can't wait for the article next week.

Angels and Airwaves create music that inspires people. FACT. Why? because it has inspired me.

It doesn't matter what your opinions are about blink, +44 , his ego or any of the other petty critisms you throw at this band becuase of somebodys past

I personally love what AVA are doing. I've seen them live 3 times and they always put on a bloody good show. The new album is better than their last relese even though WDNTW was mindblowingly good.

Stop having a go at guy who just wants to make music. If it's not your taste. fine. Go listen to something else...

Also to the guy further up...
"wheres his band?"

urr mate... his band is Angels and Airwaves
you would know if you read the article ¬¬

HIS band has sold more records than other bands including the former members of blink

HIS band is on the front cover of Kerrang next week

you guys better get used to HIS band. because they arn't going away.

AVA = LOVE

every time i read a quote from him i hate him even more, and i loved him once,i still own all the BLINK albums and i will always love them but Tom has become so up his self it makes me depressed,AVA's music is good, but the things he says just make me pity him

I hate how he alway talks about how he loves
truth and honesty. He should take a look at himself in the mirror and then talk about truth and honesty.
Im not sure if im even going to get i empire.
I got WDNTW and i was disappointed.
Will i feel the same about i empire?
Id like to buy it because i liked everythings magic alot. But why should i support the cunt?

ava are quite good, as were blink, but i ani't gonna comment on that. what i'm gonna say is if you don't like them, don't read the article and complain to people who care. the fans will still like them, so ther is no point complaining to people like that. but you can complain to people to don't like them.

I think people should give Tom a break. He's still the same person, but still everyone talks about the 'old Tom'. What the fuck? He's the same person! It's not like a little alien from Pluto came down and started to control his body (which is damn sexy by the way). I think AVA are an awesome band and so are +44. But neither are better than Blink, and I don't think they ever will be. Although some of AVA's songs on I-Empire are getting up to Blink standards. +44 bore be a bit with their constant bitchiness about Tom. GET OVER IT CHILDREN.
Well...That's my wee rant over and done with.
