Metallica, Rage and Slipknot for Reading and Leeds!

Metallica have been confirmed as headliners at this year's Reading and Leeds festivals between Friday August 22 and Sunday August 24.

Joining Metallica are Rage Against The Machine - who make their first UK appearance in the UK for eight years - Slipknot, Queens Of The Stone Age, Serj Tankian, Feeder and Pendulum. In addition to their Download 2008 appearances, Bullet For My Valentine and Biffy Clyro have confirmed they'll appear at the three-day festival. More acts will be announced over the coming months.

"Alongside the hallowed turf of Castle Donington there is no place in the UK that is more historic or more of an honour for Metallica to play than at Reading," drummer Lars Ulrich tells Kerrang!. "Back in the day when I was first tripping on music, I'd look at the line-up and see bands like Iron Maiden, UFO and Whitesnake headlining, so for us to be asked to come back yet again and stand at the top of the pile so to speak is an absolutely tremendous gift from the organisers. It's just such an absolutely incredible thing to be a part of.

"I remember playing the festival back in '03 and getting the chance to close down Reading, and that was such a massive feeling to carry around," he adds. "The fact that they've asked us to come back and do the same thing again is absolutely huge in my eyes. We headlined Wembley last year, did Download the year before, and so playing Reading and Leeds just seemed like the obvious thing to do. In my eyes it's still one of the biggest and most monumental music festivals in the world, and with bands like Slipknot and Rage Against The Machine playing I'm sure it's going to be one of the best line-ups that people have seen in quite a while."

Ulrich says fans can expect to hear some new material from their forthcoming ninth studio album.

"We're psyched to play some new songs," he laughs. "In fact, if we don't, then I give people permission to come and find me and slap me across the face! We're certainly planning on rolling out some of the new songs for the first time, but right now our focus is on finishing the record. As soon as that's out of the way, we'll be hitting the rehearsal room and getting to grips with playing these bastards live!"

Slipknot are currently working on their first studio release since 2004's Vol. 3: (The Subliminal Verses).

"Last time we played we were part of history, this time we're gonna make history," says vocalist Corey Taylor. "Get ready to believe again."

Tickets are on sale now. To purchase tickets online, please visit www.aloud.com or call 0870 998 8888.

'spaztic indie kids MWUHAHAHAHHAA i hope the slipknot fans crush em ;]'

well no because if people dont like slipknot, theyll go see someone else on one of the other 5 stages. not sit around and cry about it. The majority of people who actually go to RandL go because they have a varied music taste. I know load of people itching to see slipknot but also want to see pendulum, dizzee rascal, manic street preachers, avenged sevenfold, justice...etc

Posted by Dave | March 31, 2008 9:40 PM | Reply to this

They guy above me is one of the only people on here who is talking sense.

could all you immature people stop posting utter bollocks.

all this "stupid indie kids" and "why arnt slipknot and metallica at download" is annoying me.

Leeds/Reading is not an Indie Fesitval they have had Metal bands there since it started. So do your research.

and yes Leeds/Reading has got Metallica, Rage and Slipknot but look how many METAL bands Download has for gods sake and there is still ALOT to be confirmed!!

Just calm down people, and leave other people alone. If you dont like a certain type of music dont listen to it and dont bloody get abusive to other people who have different tastes to you.

its all opinions at the rest of the day!!

any way seeing Metallica for a 3rd time is guna be just lovely, and Slipknot AGAIN will be nice!!

and RAGE well thats all i have to say!!

if you look one the leedss/readiing website and actually look at the line up

its only sunday that a decent day

the rest is a normal shityy indie days which dusnt bother me or hopefully any rock or metal fan in the slightest]]

come on slipknot n a7x probs even the d will still get anounced for download

its a hope

check it out

its really not that gd

lets make it a fukin metalfest then who gives a shit what bands have played in the past there will be no indie kids coming. rock pop/emo has tken over download so lets get the metal to take over fkin reading and leeds

in the words of Tenacios D "you can't kill the metal"

Posted by riley | March 31, 2008 10:34 PM | Reply to this

cheers Mason nice to see someone else talking some sense

Reading and leeds line up hasnt even been completed yet! if anything wait until the lock up stage gets announced, thats usually full of quality metal/hardcore/punk bands, and its going to be on Friday and Saturday!! rumoured bands...Fightstar, Gallows, Thrice, Youmeatsix, Story of the Year, Ghost of a thousand...etc

if you dont like the other days, grab yourself a sunday day ticket then you can see a7x slipknot, tenacious d, and metallica!

also i cant see how friday main stage is a 'indie day'?? Rage, Biffy, QOTSA, Anti Flag, TBS????? dear me :/

Indie is a term used too easily these days, just like 'metal'. Indie stands for 'individual', but unfortunately its used too much to label bands its got a bad name.

Fucking Slipknot.

In my opinion... I don't at all like the lineup in general. I hate indie music.
'Why go to Reading fest then?' I hear you ask. BECAUSE IT'S NOT AN INDIE FESTIVAL. It's a really varied music festival. The 2 bands I'm most looking forward to are Slipknot and Pendulum. Work that one out...

I do though, think it's an embarrassment that Tenacious D are higher up the bill than Slipknot. But I have noticed that the RandL lineups always seem to be in a fucked up order. Nevermind.

Shame I couldn't get my Reading weekend ticket today. I'll keep looking.

But please, you people who just constantly abuse other social groups and other genres of music, just give it a rest. If you don't like what you see on the lineup, go watch another band on another stage. If you've not heard of any of the bands, just pick one, and go try them out.

Lol. Where else would someone make first UK appearance, other than in the UK. -_~

So much for Leeds/Reading's 'metal' day. Metallica and Slipknot are about the most metal thing about this festival. The rest of it is metal-lite - Feeder, on the same day as Metallica? Correct me if I'm wrong but Judas Priest, Motorhead, Cavalera Conspiracy, Children Of Bodom, In Flames, etc. - Download still has more metal than Leeds, metal festival or not.

And RATM are wasted among The Fratellis and The Enemy. I'm not wasting £70 to sit through a bunch of indie bands who I don't even like.

Funny how these people saying that Leeds/Reading is shitting all over Download were celebrating one week ago when Madina Lake were confirmed, and didn't everyone say how apparently great Download was going to be then? (At least on this website)

Let's take stock here - 90% of the bands playing Leeds and Reading are over-rated. Yes, Download has a lot of terrible bands on the bill but still has everything I want to see. Seen Metallica, Slipknot, A7X, already, Download has a bunch of bands I've never seen before that I'm very much looking forward to.

Sunday has never been officially classed as a 'METAL' day at Reading, the only reason it gets that label is because the main stage that day is always saved for kerrang! friendly bands and so many metal bands have played. There has never been a fully metal lineup, take last years sunday lineup....billy talent, used, ffaf, fall out boy, lost p's, nine inch nails, smashing pumpkins. then the years before have seen bands like MCR, slayer, iron maiden, mastodon, killswitch engage all play amongst less metal bands.

it seems to me a lot of people goign to download just want to see the same bands every year...why not just go check out some new bands?? even though im going to reading, i'd love to go to download aswel.

Posted by Dave | April 1, 2008 12:33 PM | Reply to this

lol varied? how much more varied do you want download to be?

its funny how people have selective cuntness about them isnt it? L+R is varied but thats a good thing, Download is varied and thats a bad thing?

lol at you.

Download has Ofsspring, so is automatically better than any other fesival ever has a chance of being. not to mention having jimmy eat world and dillinger!

Posted by tom | April 1, 2008 12:57 PM | Reply to this

Not everyone has been saying Download is shit from the beginning. Remember when they announced Disturbed, In Flames, Incubus, Coheed and Cambria, and Children Of Bodom, everyone was rightly saying how good Download was looking. Its not looking tip top at the moment but Valient Thorr have self-confirmed and we're told that there will be a 'metal' announcement next week, and if what I've heard is right, the joke will be on you and many others next Tuesday.

Leeds and Reading line-ups don't confirm anything other than that at the end of the day there's still a heaping helping or indie toss to wade through before you get to RATM. On top of that, you wouldn't have Metallica if it weren't for Judas Priest and Motorhead, so show some respect! Download has plenty of top acts like Cavalera Conspiracy (so what if everyone on Kerrang hates Max? Get over it!), Black Dahlia Murder, Rise Against - there's one band you didn't get, and haven't got yet -, Dillinger Escape Plan, all bands more unique and innovative and in your face than anything Leeds and Reading can provide.

Machine Head are indeed rumoured for Leeds and Reading, but you'll waste them with a mid-afternoon slot. The only band I'd happily have from this line-up is Tenacious D. Metallica's 'Master Of Puppets' set in 2006 is something you won't see again. Slipknot I've seen time and time again and they are good but when it comes to new acts and heritage, Download is indeed king.

After going to New York City to see Rage at Rock The Bells festival i was hoping to get the chance to see them in an indoors venue when they come to the UK. However it looks like they are just going to do Reading Festival and no where like Brixton Academy etc :(

Anyway I've got my ticket for the Friday day, so it should be pretty mental!

I agree with you here. After seeing the current Download line-up, I was thinking of ditching the Download weekend and waiting to see if I could buy a day ticket so I could see Seether. Now I've seen Metallica are headlining, I felt more swayed to go to Reading. But there is going to be a shit load of indie, and I can't fucking stand Indie. It's a fucking hard choice, though.

iron maiden, slayer, metallica, marilyn manson, nine inch nails, killswitch engage, slipknot, mastodon, system of a down, bullet, linkin park, deftones, limp bizkit, rage...

they've all played reading/leeds during its history, some on countless occassions.

they sponsor download and reading becomes more metal than download
they did it with gian to they get paramore and 30stm to headline WTF they are nobodies compared to HIM, AFI my chem, lost prohets
i recon what has to be relized here is kerrang should not be let loose next to any festival!

I find it funny how a lot of you are saying its a shitty little indie fest and all. Considering they have Metallica and RATM headlining and have a vast history of great headliners but who have Download headling? Lostprophets and Offspring..exactly! Fair enough i do like both Lostprophets and Offspring but just not big enough for headlining, sub headlining fair enough.

Leeds/Reading > Download

Always has been, always will be. Can't wait to see who'll play the Lock Up Stage also, Circa Survive, Thrice, Dillinger Escape Plan, Every Time I Die and Glassjaw please!

Posted by Jordan | April 1, 2008 10:08 PM | Reply to this

Personally the line-up for Reading and Leeds and Download should be swapped. I mean this line-up is much better than Download. Rather amusing actually since Reading is more of a Emo/Alternative/Indie festival and Download is more metal, not this year however.

The line-up is rather good though.

Slipknot =FTW!

Posted by Black Rose | April 1, 2008 11:10 PM | Reply to this

the line up at download is poor.very poor. as for all this talk of little posh indie kids etc. who fuckin cares how the fuck someone looks ,wot they like etc.you are going to watch and listen to bands not spend your time looking at other fucking people.there are some good comments on hear but also some seriously fucking thick statements from people who are supposed to pride themselves in being open minded.some of you metal fans want to take a long hard look at your values. you sit here slaggig every fucker off because they are indie or whatever then piss and moan when people get on YOUR case. fucking grow up you daft cunts. and before you ask,im a metal/hardcore /thrash/crossover fan myself . also this will be the first time i miss donington since 1991.but thats my choice but i WILL be going to leeds.again MY choice. simple answer ;if you dont like whatever festival it may be.DONT FUCKING GO.

'itd be funny if corey taylor, serj tankian, joey jordison and matt tuck, suddenly set the indie kids on fire =)'

i love how everyone was crying and upset at that girl getting killed just for the way she was dressed, yet now loads of people on here are wishing pain and killings upon 'indie kids'

people can be so hypocritical, grow up!!

Wow.
Better lineupthan download tbh.
Just put those bands at download + wahey a festival! Metal fans wontgo to R+L cos of its reputaion as an indie festival. I like indie but this is definitely an improvement (Y)
