"Emo" fan suicide

I think that people assume that, if someone is emo, they're automatically depressed and self harm. If people knew more about self harm, they'd know that it doesn't just affect "emos", and most bands that people call emo don't encourage self harm, they try and help people to be less depressed. They don't encourage depression. Why are people so narrow minded they don't see this?

The term "Emo" has a much deeper meaning than the one people attach to it these days. Emo seems to be an image one minute, then a style of music the next. But wait? Aren't PATD emo? yes? well how come MCR are emo too? Sub-genres, there are none of them, people are summing categories up, and blaming the one thing they know nothing about. I defy anyone to listen to Rites Of Spring, Gray Matter, or even go a little later with The Get Up Kids, then turn around and say Emo is still causing suicides. No chance.

Why are the media and general public so ignorant? I listen to the music I do because I love it, it makes me happy and I feel a connection with it. The term 'emo' is always misused in cases like this, hannah must have been deeply unhappy, and I wouldn't believe anyone that says they've never thought about suicide in some context. The sad thing is she obviously didnt feel she could turn to her parents for help.

The parents are not at fault, the girl clearly showed no signs of anything upsetting her. I'm sure had she been behaving differently her parents would have picked up on it.

Music is not at fault. Although I strongly dislike some types of music, I do not blame any of it. Lyrics are the story of someone else being hurt or a story of difficulties experienced by the songwriter. They are not instructions.

There was clearly something deeper that hit her. Perhaps bullying, perhaps rejection. Something like that.

Something everyone seems to forget when they are discussing the tragedy of teen suicides, is that they are teenagers.
Teenagers are known for being so awful because of their hormones.
These hormones make teenagers feel things stronger than most people would. It's why at say, 15, a girl can be absolutely heartbroken over a month-long relationship.

I think this is simply a message to keep an eye on our teenagers, and make sure they are coping with day-to-day life.

This is so fucking wrong. If these people actually LISTENED to the lyrics of some of these songs, they'd see it's the complete opposite. My Chemical Romance especially. Their inspiring music has saved countless lives. Why don't you ever see THAT in newspapers? The stereotypical "emo kids" that are into that scene that do self-harm and commit suicide, listen to that music because it helps them out more than these news reporters bother to dig. These bands should be getting so much more praise for the things they do, rather than just being blamed when something bad, they don't even encourage happens. WISE THE FUCK UP!

quite frankly what her family and the press are failing to realise is that they had probably lost their daughter through ignorance long before she took her life. They are then placing the blame on 'emo' because it is something they do not understand. The lyrics, passion and emotion in songs are often what keeps people holding on in life. Sometimes one song can change our lives entirely.

blaming some 'suicide cult' culture is an unneccisery way of placing the blame elsewhere. I'm guessing she felt a stronger connection with her music than her parents, and not in the way they seem to be presuming.

It is obvious to me that as a developed society and culture that we are too far up our on arse to say okay, so there is something wrong here. There are loads of things that we can do to prevent this sort of events occuring. Such as;
Weekly counciling at schools,
or Teachers noting and addressing parents with strange behaviour.

You do not have to wait till fucking parents day to say anything why not just call home? you fucking call when we are not at school. Why not call home when we are not functioning adeqautely.

I used to love my chemical romance but im still alive, i knew every word to every song and ive never ever tried to kill myself or anything.It was actually a nice thing to get away and listen to these bands when you are feeling low as they make you feel that your not alone if your feeling depressed. its obviously a ploy to get everyone against things that arent 'normal' or 'safe'. Parents should stop trying to look everywhere else for an answer to a problem just because they feel guilty that they didnt look after their kid properly.

I've been a My Chemical Romance fan for nearly six years now and I wouldn't be here without them.

I'm fed up with the media obsession that "emo" music promotes suicidal tendancies. For an apparently "suicide cult" as they describe it, it contains a bunch of people (at least within my social circle) that are perfectly happy and content with life.

So what makes the media (and in fact the deluded parents, although my thoughts are with them) think that bands such as My Chemical Romance are to blame?

Because they tackle the themes of death and loss in their songs? Is that a trait only found in "emo" songs? I don't believe that is the case, and I'm sure any sane person will agree with me.

I, personally, listen to My Chemical Romance. They are not my favourite band, but their music is catchy, and the band have talent - so does my brother, girlfriend, and half of my friends... yet we haven't killed ourselves, or even had the intention to.

At the end of the day, the parents and the media just want someone or something to blame, because they are still in shock that this girl would kill herself. I can partly understand this. But what I don't understand is how exactly listening to a rock band caused this girl to kill herself.

Yes, it is sad, and yes, I give my condolences, but at the end of the day - she made her own choice, and nobody else can be blamed for that.

It's really sad when stuff like this happens, but the papers reporting stories like this one make themselves sound so stupid because they appear to know nothing about any youth culture whatsoever. They claim that all 'emo followers' wear tight jeans, studded belts, practice self harm, and are depressed. It's such a massive, naive generalisation. These journalists say they've done their research on the emo culture but they clearly haven't, they've taken one look at a stereotype and assumed that all 'emos' are like that. It's ridiculous that people are constantly trying to blame someone when something like this happens, they should be spending time consoling the family of the girl and trying to make sure none of her friends or anyone else are trying to do the same thing.

They blame the music because they're less likely to be sued for defamation or some shit than they would be if they pointed the finger at a person.

People are trying to find something to pin the blame on. If people actually looked into why people feel depressed and contemplate suicide, they'd realize that its nothing to do with the music or so called 'culture' but the persons own issues and struggles. If anything music can be seen as a sort of therapy because it can help release tension and get someones emotions out; whether they're happy or sad. MCR do not promote suicide in any shape or form, and if for example the songs were to be scrutinized, its really only the writer expressing his feelings through a different medium. Not with intentions for people to see is as reasons to kill themselves.
It pisses me off how people dont seem to want to look into the reals reasons as to why people commit suicide. Theres thousands of people who really could do with help because them themselves may be on the edge but that will never happen because depression isnt seen as a serious problem.

I think it's stupid that the media can take an incident like this and blame it on the music the girl listens to, or the clothes she wears.

I chose to speak about the emo subculture and it's so called realtion to suicide for my year 12 speech last year.
I don't know how many times it has to be said--Do you think those who kill themselves think of the emo subculture when doing so?
People who commit suicide do so because they have problems we are uncapable of understanding.
The media hasn't taken into account her personal problems at all. What they've done (and they done it to two Australian girls who killed themselves together last year) is taken one look at her music tastes an interests, and weaved up a story.
And it'll never stop. The media isn't allowed to report suicides, but does so when it involves someone who likes rock music. Imagine all the suicides happening in the world that were not commited by someone who was supposedly 'emo' or 'goth'? Why don't we hear about them? Because the media wants to create a negative image for anyone who is greatly different to them.

I think it has become easy for people to blame something that they don't actually understand or make the effort to understand. The media in particular love a scapegoat and because bands like MCR are "out of the ordinary" in the way they appear its easy to say they're fucked up and they're fucking up their listeners. I am a youth worker and a lot of the young people I work with have found a lot of hope and strength through emo-style bands, as I have myself. But if you don't understand something you're automatically scared of it and thats when you're in danger of beinf part of a blame culture. I also think people don't like to take responsibility for things anymore, they'd rather pass the blame on. We live in a blame culture where everything is always someone elses fault.

I think it's stupid the media blames bands or music for the death of this little girl. But it's true that emo culture is a lot about self harming and sadness. Some people are "emo" juste because they think it's cool, but some other take this really seriously and her suicide is exactly where it can lead.
On the other hand I'm perfectly sure that this girl must have had real problems in her life : emo culture, as depressing as it can be, can't be the only reason for this girls' death.
I think people blame it on the music because it's easier for the family to realise that maybe if they were a bit more attentive they could have seen she was going through a lot and could have helped her.
Now for all depressed kids : suicide is NOT the solution! For fuck's sake, before doing something stupid, think about the sadness you'll put family and friends through. You have to stay strong and fight against whatever is making you feel bad. And, quoting from staind : "if you believe you can find a way out, you've solved the problem; but if you believe you can't find a problem then you're the problem". A perfect example showing that music can send positive messages (but staind is not emo so I don't know about the other bands).

I think that society will always need a scape goat, and unfortunately the Emo culture is the easiest target at the moment. It's easier to blame "emo" than take responsibility for te problems in society that drive people to suicide. What happened to that girl is tragic, and it's a shame that the music that probably gave her comfort is getting blamed for her death.

I seriously cant think of one song that says 'Ok you listen to us so therefore you must self harm until you eventually commit suicide'. Its the ignorance of other people that drives suicide. Giving people the feeling of being so misunderstood that the only option is to die just shows how trapped some people feel. Its a cry for help more than anything.
Its so frustrating that people cant accept the differences in life today. How dull would it be if we all like the same thing, did the same thing, wore the same thing etc. It would be awful. Music is not to blame and MCR definatly aren't.

My Chemical Romance's lyrics often deal with a very realist, slightly angsty, outcast-centred point of view, and they're gonna get that association just like Placebo or Marilyn Manson would've done. When a fan of a band who appealed to them because they summed up their worldview and it wasn't a happy one is depressed, people will go "Well, shouldn't listen to that awful, miserable music then, that won't help. You're wallowing in your own misery."

I have to defend MCR in this. I have been very fortunate to have seen them play live 6 times because my son is a huge MCR fan (as I am now). Gerard Way has always preached to the audience about sticking up for themselves and not taking anyone's shit and not letting anyone get them down.

They have never, to my knowledge, preached about self-harming and suicide. If anything with the band members experiences they give out the message that it is possible to come off drugs and give up alcohol.

My son is against drug taking and getting drunk purely because of Gerard Way.

This band deserves praise rather than being blamed for teenage suicides and the Emo culture.

People like to listen to bands that sum up how they feel. The modern "Emo" scene - My Chem, Fall Out Boy etc - is energetic and fun, but with a bit of angst in there.

Plus, how many people commit suicide each week? How many people must've paid for Welcome To The Black Parade for it to have got THAT chart position? Sooner or later SOMEONE who listened to My Chem was gonna kill themselves, just because My Chem can't change the world into a place where noone ever wants to die. I am a 41 yr old mother who if we r judging on appearance and music types would be catagorised as emo,, i am mum to a 15 yr old girl who openly sed she was emo,, however at no point did i have any fears or concerns about her self harming,, this is due to the persons state of mind not the genre of music they prefer or the way they look,, although no blame shud be laid for this tragic event if this had happened to my daughter i wud be questioning myself as to why i hadnt spotted a problem,,, not blaming a band who have themselves done amazing work to prevent kids self harming. It's so typical that newsapers such as the Telegraph and the Daily Mail are reporting on this. It's sensationalist bull. It's a tragedy every time somebody would takes their life rather than deal with this world, but being a part of so-called 'emo culture' isn't the cause, it's a symptom. To most, it can be a comfort and a lifeline to have friends that understand what you're going through. It is an upsetting and tragic event for anyone to feel they have to prematurely end their life, but to put the music they listen to to blame is possibly more sickening.

Michael Moore raises in "Bowling for Columbine" that the kids who shot their classmates were influenced by Marilyn Manson to do so. This is much the same, and to put MCR at blame for such an event is wrong and unfounded. Who is blaming the parents? The parents are the ones who should be helping their kids get through the hard times and feel appoachable, if not parents - schoolteachers, friends, other family? where the fuck are they?

Lots of alternative/metal subcultures find death aesthetically pleasing and use it in their music, which is fair enough. That doesn't mean you have to go and cut yourself to "fit in". My Chemical Romance have said it themselves - you don't have to be sad or a cutter to like their band.

As far as I can see, emo culture is continually blamed for suicides and self harm because of two things: a) young teenagers misunderstanding it and taking the posing too far and b) the shamelessly sensationalist bollocks spouted by hysterical newspapers such as the Daily Mail.

Every genre gets blamed for something - rap for violence and youth crime, RandB for promiscuity etcetera, and I s'pose this is what emo is going to be blamed for. But at the end of the day, it's not just the bands, it's the media, the parents, and ultimately the teenagers going around shooting each other/having irresponsible sex/cutting themselves to fit in whose fault it is.

Because society and the parents need to blame someone other than the obvious. Themselves. Often times, the kids turn to this genre of music because they can relate to it, due to their environment and upbringing (if there isn't some type of chemical imbalance)...the music is not the cause, it is the effect...without it, there would be more teen suicides. If the music were the cause, everyone would have killed themselves decades ago...long before "emo".

Many fans of MCR who have had the privilege of seeing them play live will know that Gerard Way is totally against crap like this and is all for living your life your way and standing up to the bullies who make peoples lives a misery.

I feel for Hannah's family,I have a daughter the same age and would be devastated under the same circumstances.If I thought for one minute my daughter was self harming etc,I would seek IMMEDIATE help and advice.NOT jump to the conclusion that it was MCR's fault,or the EMO culture.

What a load of crap. Yes it is so sad that someone would do this to themselves but it is not how all 'Emo's' act. I would definately be classed as an 'Emo' but i am far from depressed and have never self harmed. I simply enjoy the Music and like the style. As for the lyrics quoted in the article they are in no way encouragement to commit suicide! They are concerning brothers Mikey and Gerard Way's Grandmother who played a massive part in their lives but sadly passed away and quite frankly its offensive to suggest that a loving tribute to someones dead grandmother in any way influenced someone to commit suicide. I don't deny that there are many dark images and websites associated with this genre but there are also a number of positive images and merchandise. I personally find the Music (which is what it is about) uplifting and it creates a great social scene which me and a number of my friends (non of which self harm) enjoy being a part of. The term Scape goat springs to mind!

I think this genre is being given too much credit and hype, when people report on it's apparent ability to force people to self harm and commit suicide as part of an initiation into the 'EMO fraternity'.

Although I can honestly say that if I had to listen to it I would be driven to the edge of despair, All personal opinion aside, I do not agree that any artist, band or genre of music, no matter how influencial in terms of lifestyle or fashion, can be directly held responsible for a persons decision to cut themselves, or, ultimately, to end their lives.

I've read a few reports in national papers over the last couple of years which give a certain mystique to EMO kids, making their lifestyle out to being that of a 'club' or a type of gang culture, do these reporters really believe that there's some kind of underground society on par with the likes of the Hells Angels, an army of suicidal youngsters armed with razor blades and spray on jeans?? That was in the linked articles. I have a few emo friends even though I'm a metalhead and they don't believe that shit. I don't know ANY emo that does. It seems like something of a religion rather than a music subculture. If there are emos somewhere that do believe that, I think would need their heads checking.

Anyway, I'm studying journalism at university, about to go into my third year...

I'd never be so stereotypical like the journalist in question was. The article was so full of assumptions, generalisation and run-of-the-mill 'insult it because it's not mainstream' bullshit, I could barely, just barely read the entire article and take it seriously. It amazes me that the editors will let a story so biased be printed without checking facts. No interviews with emo kids, no talking to My Chem, nothing. It's this kind of journalism that makes me sick and makes journalism as whole look bad.

Not that I like emo culture, because I don't, I think it's shallow... but it's alternative and when it comes down to it, we should all stand up for each other against the mainstream's lies and misconceptions.

Music always affects people differently - for me, MCR helped me get over depression; for some music like Kylie can push them over the edge. A person's negative mental state is never caused by a bands music and when the media reports that it does it is just an insult to the band and to all the fans who it has helped.
As a secondary note - 'emo', in the way they've described it, is a culture that has been created by the media taking sterotypes and continually reporting on them in a negative way - it's created by them and then blamed for the worlds woes.

For some reason we have stopped grouping muisc by its genre, but instead have started to group it by the social status of the types of people that listen to it!

It doesn't add up. You don't just become an emo, mainly due to the fact emo is not real, it's a label that kids these days stick to themselves or others.

Music these days is used as a scapegoat for these kind of incidents. It's like the movie "The Dead Poet's Society", the parents blamed Mr. Keating for their sons death, when infact it was they who were the problem. In this case, the girls problem was her friends, society and this stupid label.

This is just another one of those ignorant, stereotypical scoops that such media produce day in and day out. If they could be bothered to look into this "suicide cult" more, they might actually find evidence to suggest that at the heart of the current "emo" trend, there is actually hope. Why do people follow MCR, even worship them? Because they speak AGAINST, not FOR depression, self-harm and suicide, trying to unite the outsider generation so that people would see that there are others with the same problems, the same depression, who can help each other. Firstly, My Chemical Romance are not an 'emo' band. They are an average, run of the mill, pop punk band. Yeah, fair enough a lot of their lyrics sound depressing or whatever, but this is where people go wrong: this outburst of sudden extension-obsessed, eyeliner-ridden, depressed angered teenagers has taken what the genre 'emo' used to be and completely morphed it into a pathetic excuse to start looking for attention.

Where emo originated from, it was certainly not considered 'emo' to cut your wrists. This self harm issue has only multiplied in rumours and bad press of the music genre. After all, it was once, only a music genre.

What these kids consider to be emo nowadays is whatever their friends saw on the internet first: sites like Myspace.com and Vampirefreaks only bring this on further. Yeah sure, I own up to dressing what is deemed 'emo' nowadays a couple of years back, but I bet quite a lot of people can. They grow out of the stereotype, right?

Now, the use of the word 'cult'. Again, bad press. 'Emo' is a genre of music, and despite what some young kids think, it is not a way of life.

All that happened to this poor girl was she got sucked into a world of certain expectations that apparantly come with listening to a certain type of music. I certainly have never felt like killing myself from listening to bands like My Chemical Romance, who funnily enough, I can't even stand anymore.

The Press needs to reconsider what exactly is 'emo': a music genre, or a group of 'suicide cult rock bands'.

like anything else, music is just a way of expression and used as an outlet. i listen to my chemical romance and i dont want to kill myself. in fact, i am a happy person. the phrase 'emo' is just the latest thing the media have latched onto to generate stories to sell newspapers. its all pretty ridiculous really and i feel very sorry for the girl's family. in all fairness, there is help out there and organisations like TWLOHA help raise awareness.

I did my Journalism University dissertation on how the media blames rock musicians for tragic events such as Columbine and teen suicides. Unfortunately this is the latest in a series of poor reporting and misrepresentation of rock music by the media.
As a journalism student it is hard to try and defend your profession when reporters do not do their homework and create panics about rock music.
The stereotype about Emo music needs to stop as it spreads prejudice and reporting like this wont help matters

I am horrified at the blame that the newspapers have shown and the way they have presented this. Emo is not all wrist cutting and depression thats just stereotyping, its emotional, its exspresses feelings and thoughts in a musical style. MCR who are the main area to be blamed promote against self harm!! Its like the the GTA series showing influencing violence. Its stupid iv never listen to any emo band and had the urge to kill myself and i dont feel this is a fair response by the media. I know many MCR fans and I have been a fan for some while myself, I'm not going to sugarcoat it into saying that we're a really happy crowd, we manage. I don't believe music makes us depressive, suicidal, bi-polar, or whatever; whoever thinks that knows jack about mental disorders, but I do think that we like the music because we're more or less messed up. The music is the refuge, the ''oh they feel the same'', the salvation if you wish. Yet as funny as it might sound, I don't have any true ''emo'' friends and I've yet to meet an ''emo'' MCR fan. We all cry from time to time, bury ourselves in [real life or cyber] hugs and refuse to breathe from time to time because life is hard and faith is hard to keep, but on the outside most of us seem ''normal'' I suppose, a far cry from the ''emo'' type. The hardcore fans [the ones who Keep the Faith] are not all dressed in skinny jeans, wearing black rimmed glasses or with funny ''emo'' haircuts. I am not denying the fact that there might be some ''emos'', I'm just saying that I've never meet an MCR-emo.

As for the whole ''emo'' stereotype per genere, like any other kind of label, it's just pathetic. I pity the people who try to fit in by using it, or by trying to sound/look/feel ''emo''.

I'm been through some fucked up shit and yes my family have blamed the music because when you're depressed you don't like opening up to people and people don't understand. So you CANNOT blame music as I found that music helps. I found emo music to be truly inspirational and sometimes made me stronger and it's one of the reasons I am still here today.

Emo is blamed as it is an easy target. The media are quick to blame alternative lifestyles as it something that is not entirely understood and "different". This creates a moral panic amongst readers (most likely parents/teachers/people in a position of authority). The idea is to make the parents ask questions about their own children and think "Well maybe if my child is listening to this type of music they will end up the same way?" It's all down to the media wanting to make money. What is going to be more attention grabbing headline which draws people to buy the paper? A teenage girl committing suicide because of personal problems. No thats too "normal", but "Popular schoolgirl dies in 'emo suicide cult" (to quote the The Telegraph) now that is a real eye grabber.

People do not kill themselves because music tells them to, there has got to be some underlying factor which puts them in that state of desperation.

All you have to do is read the lyrics from any song on TBP, especially FAMOUS LAST WORDS which clearly says "I AM NOT AFRAID TO KEEP ON LIVING"...I AM SO SICK OF PARENTS WHO CLEARLY TAKE NO INTEREST IN THEIR CHILDREN'S LIVES TURNING AROUND AND BLAMING MCR FOR THIS KIND OF THING HAPPENING. "Emo fans wear dark clothes, practise self-harm and listen to "suicide cult" rock bands" says the Daily Mail, a paper many parents and grandparents may read and start to worry about their children.

The same goes for The London paper which states that "followers wear tight jeans with studded belts and wristbands. Their hair is dyed black and worn in long fringes to obscure their faces".

This is stereotying to the extreme, especially since suicide and self harming is involved.

I am jokingly called emo by some friends and family as I listen to some 'emo' music. Out of all of the above, I wear tight jeans and have a long fringe but only because I choose to, not because any music told me to.

It is completely wrong to worry parents unnecessarily about the 'dangers' of listening to 'emo' music. Someone should have spoken more to Hannah about the cuts on her wrists as it seems to me you would only do this to try and get rid of your mental anguish.

This is just my personal opinion though.

Its the media causing moral panic by scape goating elements of our popular culture. the film Old boy got blamed for virginia tech massacre, childs play for the murder of jamie bulger and metal music for saying it promotes devil worship etc.
At the end of the day the media want readers and by blaming music, film and tv alot of people are immediatley drawn to it because they may relate to it, like 'iv watched that film' or 'i no mcr'. It just an evil scheme to cash in on the publics shock.

It's the persons own decision and the fact that people are blamming certain bands such as MCR is just a way of shifting the blame instead of facing the idea that she may have been depressed and needed help and that she may not have been given it. Its sad that she felt the only release was through suicide but why the hell are mcr being blamed? If it wasnt for them, a lot of people wouldnt have an outlet of relief and there would probably be more suicides, not less. mcr saves, its what they started out doing and what theyve suceeded in. And using lyrics like 'and when your dead and gone believe me your memory will carry on' isnt depressing, its encouraging those that had losses to carry on but to let the memories of the loved one live on. How the hell would it be interpreted differently?

No doubt a thousand people will have commented on the music being a scapegoat here already so I won't make that comment, but it's true. You can't blame a genre for putting ideas into people heads. If anything it's the other way round? People with certain ideas are going to be attracted to a certain clique, and of course there will always be those who find such a clique fashionable, and this is how it becomes popular. It seems a shame that the two types of people are lumped together, but using 'emo' as a word to describe someone who actually has real problems is, let's face it completely ambiguous- it could mean anything from depression to fashion to an insult.

As someone who sufferes from depression and has battled with self harm for 8 years, I'd like to point out that it is not something some one would do lightly.
Many bands sing about death and depression etc, but that's all part of life. It would be silly to censor such a thing and wrap kids up in cotton wool, lying to them that everything is nice and easy in the world.
I don't think there is any links with Hannah's death and her choice of music. I am sure that there must have been some underlying reason.
Depression is not something to shrug off. It is hard to cope with, but something a lot of people like to cover up. She may well have not wanted to talk to anybody, fearing she would be told she was wasting time etc.
Instead of looking for a skapegoat, the media and the parents should use this tragic event to raise awareness of suicide and self harm.
Everyone is different, so please stop sterotyping and help those that are crying out for help.

This is no doubt a trgedy, but it has nothin to do with 'emo'. Teenagers have always been self harming and suicidal, its just packaged differently in different generations. I think this is a typical case of the media looking at something from the outside and getting it the wrong way around.

People that feel isolated, alone, unhappy can find connection and peace in this type of music. It helps them feel less alone and more understood.

The media comes from the outside, notices that all these people like a certain kind of music and then instantly blames the music rather than any larger issues at hand! It's an easy excuse.

I read the daily mail article and its one of the most outrageous articles i've ever read. Written by someone whos probably middle age and writting down stereotypical descriptions as fact.

i would like to say to her parents that i am sorry for their loss. It is sad that Hannah felt she had no other way out, but to blame a music genre for her death, simply because it is stereotyped to contain messages of suicide and self harm isn't the answer. The media use it as a scapegoat.
Everyone knows MCR don't endorse taking your own life, they have said this in many interviews, so it's not right to blame them either. It would seem Hannah had more problems that was known about.

She was thirteen. At that age we’re all just clutching at anything that is described as ‘normal’ by our peers, so that we’re accepted, these stereotypes such as; ‘emo’, have turned from harmless ways in which groups can separate themselves from other groups, to a way of life.
Why does music aimed at teens have to be so depressing in the first place? Yes, it’s sometimes a completely crappy time in your life. Yes there’s a lot of kids who are extremely cranky and pubescent and don’t know why, but all this negativity surrounding them isn’t going to help. I am not blaming the music industry, because I adore any form of music that strives to different and create opinions on everything around us. But people who sing about killing yourself should not be considered a role model. My chemical romance try to promote the very opposite, apparently. Some kids just need something to console them, when there friends are also wallowing in self pity and negativity and their parents don’t do very much about there cry for help (the cuts on her arms) then what else are they to do?
Obviously they could be sensible and tell themselves to get a grip, but it's, admittedly, hard. I, unfortunately, also got dragged into the whole ‘emo’ phenomenon. I went through some completely scarring crap, and I self-harmed and listened to My Chemical Romance. I didn’t realise how stupid I was being. It’s an experience worth having. If you can live through it. Sarcasm. Some kids just take to far. Hannah Bond needed help, whether she realised it or if that’s what she was craving.

i have been in the same boat several times where i've felt the need to end it, not because of my clothes or music, but because i had too many problems that i thought i couldn't solve and so i saw only one way out. i'm lucky in that, i was stopped before i could kill myself, but, unfortunately, she obviously didn't have anything to stop her and so she died.

Firstly I would like to send my condolences to this girls parents at this very difficult time. However, I am just about getting sick to the back teeth of do-gooders blaming music and using it as a scapegoat!

I've followed My Chemical Romance from the start of their career and I know that they're extremely supportive of all of their fans, especially those who feel the need to self harm or want to commit suicide. In fact, at each of their gigs (and I should know, I've seen them live 5 times) they plead with their fans to get help/speak to friends or family etc etc if they feel like life's not worth living!

Yet again, the Daily Mail decide to write a report blaming My Chemical Romance and "emo" culture in general for being a suicide cult, and you know, you seriously need to get your facts right before you write scathing and untrue articles like this.

People do not hurt themselves or commit suicide because of music; it's something far deeper than that. Self harm is a cry for help; this article does nothing to diffuse that.

Lazy hateful journalism at its worst. I have fired a comment at the Daily Mail website. I feel for the family and it's awful that the media have used this as an excuse for teen despising sensationalism.

Whilst I do feel genuinely sorry for this girls parents and I honestly in no way wish to make this sound as if her death were not the most important issue here, I'm not sure how anyone can read an article that blames it on the "emo culture" or My Chemical Romance without angrily throwing it in the bin because it is so laughably inaccurate and wrong. My Chemical Romance are in no way, shape or form a band that promote suicide or depression, and the way the media seems to be blaming them for this girls death is grossly unfair to anyone who listens to such music as a POSITIVE part of their life, instead of the negative light the daily mail is portraying them in.

MCR's music contains lyrics that are personal and often detailed about life, main example that comes to mind is 'Helena'. There's going to be people that will relate to the lyrics personally because of experience.

Suicides are always a touchy subject to comment one, especially when the media gets involved with their "all knowing" journalists. The point is, newpapers need fodder for their stories or how would they sell them? This girl has been made victim to this and is very unfortunate and all because she followed the emo fasion and listened to emo music.

When media gets ahold of stories like this they never read into the finer details, who can say why this girl commited suicide. Though there will always be debate about why. The judgemental people will say its because she's emo, and emo's cut their wrists and cry alot. So if you're a goth you automatically worship Satan and listen to Cradle of Filth? I think happenings over the last couple of months has proven not, Sophie Lancaster strings to mind.

I know that there have been so many deaths linked to the 'emo' culture but really it's just something to blame it on. There is no way on this earth that a band who have said that they are trying to write music to put a stop to people feeling different and alone are going to try and make someon feel worst. The musioc that we all listen to has a meaning behind it; most of which is that we shouldn't feel alone and different from everyone else because we are all people. I am an MCR lover but it makes me feel happy and like i am a part of the world that we live; that there are so many people like me on this planet and in this country. "welcome to the black parade" was NOT their first single. theyv had 2 awesome albums before that. and the album runs deeper than just the "emo" lyrics, it has some damn kick ass riffs and shit. you cant seriously blame MCR for her death. if theres some lyrics you should look at... *ahem* "beautiful girllll, you only wanna do me dirt, you make me suicidal, suicidal, suicidal." sean kingston at his best. That is not true. Emo is just a label given to people who wear black and listen to rock muisc but, everyone think they cut them selfs. ''Emo's'' are all tarred with the ame brush i think that is unfair.

Im not the biggest fan of emos but it has really annoyed me that the press have blamed MCR for her suicide.
Not all emos cut there selves. The press need to get there facts right, she killed herself its a sad thing to happen and i feel sorry for the family and wish them all the best, but it isn't because of music...or MCR.

i think the press just want to blame something/someone. with my chem be branded as 'emo' anyway its just makes them a target, but my chem promote the total opposite of suicide, they want to save lives. i dont think its my chems music that should be blamed for such a tragedy! if anything their music would keep pople here longer x

I dont think this is very fair since Hannah obviously loved my chemical romance i definately dont think she would want fucking shiitty ass papers writing that they influenced her suicide when more than likley they helped with her problems but they just became to much. I would hate papers to think that the thing i loved the most influenced my suicide.

As much as i amn't one to go and label people, there must be some reason why emos get associated with depression, cutting and suicide but that dosnt mean you should assume that everyone who classifies themselves as emo is depressed, etc.

I also personnaly dont think My Chemical Romance are an emo band. They are my favourite band, and some of the music does deal with pain, angst, etc. but on a level where they are not condoing it.

Its ashame what happend to Hannah and my sympathy goes out to her family and friends, but in light of this i dont think people that should go and blame a whole culture for the reason of her sucide.

There is absolutely no reason why the emo subculture should be continuously blamed for teenage suicide and self-harm. As it happens, I know someone that isn't an emo/goth or any "minority" subculture that self harms. He is, as labelled, a "chav".

"Emo" isn't even supposed to BE a "scene" or subculture, it's a bloody Music Genre! All this crap about all the dead emos going to The Black Parade is ridiculous, all it is is pre-puberty hormonal teens that don't know what life is really about and what it can hold.

To kill yourself because you are barred from a friends house is disgusting. Much worse things happen to a lot of good people and they are still here today to tell their story.

Take the story of Sophie Lancaster and Robert Maltby for instance. Sophie was beaten to death, and her boyfriend Robert left in a coma because they were Goths! Robert survived, and I have no doubt that he feels terrible because Sophie tried to protect him by cradling him in her arms, and it was she who died. He's still alive.

At the end of they day, everyone is entitled to dress the way they want, listen to what they want and act the way they want, but condemning a subculture just because of the fact that the minority of people that belong to a particular subculture self harm and/or try to commit suicide is disgraceful.

Bull Shit!! I can't belive they're blaming the influence of 'Emo' bands such as My Chemical Romance for her suicide, any one ever think maybe she was being bullied? Ok, she was probably messed up, but NOT due to music!! Due to whatever she was going through, SAT's, whatever! The media can't stand the fact that no one is truely responsible for Hannah Bond's actions, but HERSELF, so they blame the 'Emo Cult' who all go cut themselves and cry over their crappy lives every night. No, they don't. Ok, I'm classed as an 'Emo' kid. But I DON'T self-harm! Ok, I listen to MCR, but I DON'T go kill myself over it. i really dont think people should point the blame at bands such as my chemical romance for suicide
yeh they have songs that alot of people think are dark but they do not encourage, in any way, suicide.
she must have had problems she felt she couldnt deal with and felt she couldnt talk about.
her parents arent at fault either but really they shouldnt put the blame on mcr.
obviously they must have read up on them and read the wrong things people say about them and thought that its mcr's fault.
have they ever been to an mcr concert and seen the amount of fans that say mcr have saved their life?
alot of people say this because evryone else does, but there are some people who struggle and then find bands whove stuggled in life too but theyve got through it and it helps them.trust me i know so many people, who like bands that arent even rock let alone emo and they say they love them cause they help them get through things.

so i think its really unfair and selfish to blame my chem for this poor girls suicide. they need to look deeper, to find the REAL reason why she killed herself and why her parents didnt see it before and try to get help.
