MCR protest - photos!

Hundreds of My Chemical Romance fans gathered at London's Marble Arch on May 31 to protest against the mainstream media's coverage of the suicide of 13-year-old rock fan Hannah Bond.

Newspapers - notably the Daily Mail - caused controversy when they reported that emo was a "suicide cult" after the teen's tragic death, blaming her suicide and the growing problem of self-harm on 'the emo cult'.

"We want to set the record straight," says K! reader Anni Smith, who helped organise Saturday's protest. "My Chemical Romance have gone as far as calling out the number of a suicide hotline from the stage; they always fight for us and try to protect us. Now we want to return the favour."

At midday, a group of 40 fans demonstrated at the newspaper's offices in Kensington, before hundreds more then gathered at Marble Arch to protest against the newspaper's sensationalist reporting.

The Daily Mail issued a statement that afternoon in response to the protests:

"The Daily Mail's coverage of the 'Emo' movement has been balanced, restrained and above all, in the public interest. Genuine concerns were raised at the inquest earlier this month on 13 year old emo follower Hannah Bond who had been self-harming and then tragically killed herself," reads the statement.

"In common with other newspapers we ran an accurate news story recording the Coroner's remarks and the parents' comments. We also published two other articles, one of which explained the background to the Hannah tragedy in calm and un-sensational language.

"The other was a first person opinion piece by a well-known writer, written from the perspective of a mother concerned for her children. We have also run two prominent page lead letters from an emo music fan and from a fan of My Chemical Romance defending their point of view.

"Our music critic admires the music of the band and publicised the band's UK tour last year. Since this protest was announced a great deal of misinformation has appeared on the internet, much of which confuses what the Daily Mail has actually published with the comments of website readers and 'blogs' over which we have no control and which have stirred up emotions.

"We note it has been pointed out by others that all this provides wonderful publicity for Warners and their impending release of My Chemical Romance's latest album.

"The Daily Mail is a broad church and is always ready to listen to the views of readers. We do, however, suggest those who want to protest or comment read everything we have published and act on fact not rumour."

See our issue of Kerrang! out June 11 for full coverage of the protest.

MCR started something which was stupid, yes lets paint ourselves black and grow our hair over our eyes.

what happened to the old punk mcr? the decent mcr! (well sorta decent)

Don't talk shit, blinkme.

When was the last time you stood up for something you believed in?

It's very easy to be dismissive when you're an anonymous internet user. I wish I had the conviction to do this.

I'm very proud of everyone who took part in this.

Posted by Peter | June 2, 2008 11:11 AM | Reply to this

How is it patheitc?

the Daily Mail had no right to do what they did!!

Just becuase people go and stand up for what they believe in... doesn't make hen patheitc you know.

Takes loads of guts and shit to do that considering the crap MCR fans get anyway.

when one of your favourite bands "blinkme" gets blamed for someones daeth... and there is a protest.. i'd like to see you say pathetic then

good on them is all i say.

this is the reason i dont read the papers anymore...they overdo absolutely every story that they hear

woo go MCRmy

Posted by fee | June 2, 2008 11:19 AM | Reply to this

It's a stereotype. Just like the stereotypical "chav" goes around beating up old people. The stereotypical "emo" sits at home and cuts themselves.

Neither is true in that many cases, but people believe these stereotypes. There's not a lot you can do about it. If you've got a problem with the stereotype. Don't conform to it.

Posted by Oli | June 2, 2008 11:20 AM | Reply to this

I'd have definitely been there if I'd heard about it. The bad press that MCR are getting is simply because everyone has a false sense of what the word "emo" means. EMOTIONAL. Nothing specifies that it means it in a negative sense.

Posted by Jocy | June 2, 2008 11:20 AM | Reply to this

Good on them!
It's a shame I couldn't get there, or I'd have certainly joined in.

It's awesome that people spend the time and money to stand up for some-thing they believe in, hopefully this will make a difference.

Yay MCRmy!

Wish i'd gone, not that i'm 'emo' or anything! Im glad that the mcr fans are standing up for the band - they deserve it. xo

Tsss, I like MCR, it's not my favourite band but blaming them for the dead of the girl. Their lyrics are about death but don't tell you to do so. When you accualy commit suicide it's because something deep inside yourself is already going wrong for a long time. I you kill yourself because you think that's what emo's do than you are pathetic. Most self-calld emos don't even know what emo is. they listen to Fall Out Boy and Simple Plan, well they suck.
What happend now is what happened when that guy shot some of his fellow students in an american university. That person listened to Marilyn Manson, so MM was blamed for what happened there. I get sick of it. N,ot everyone who listens to (real) emo or gothic and all commit suicide or cut themselves.

It's the people who cut themselves who most of the time listen to such music. That a huge difference! I listen to Punk/screamo/emo/hardcore all the time but I won't ever kill myself

They're true heroes, and they try to prevent you from taking your own life, rather than encourage it.

The media take things too far, you can't blame a band for someone's personal pain.

brilliant; they've got a good point here.
whilst i think it was a good idea in theory, how many of these mcr fans do you think actually read the article itself?

and what exactly did they hope to acheive by appearing en masse, showing off their conforming emo stereotypical clothing?

To be fair i think this was a great idea. My Chemical Romance have nothing to do with this, there are LOADS of bands like them but why should they and their fans get it in the neck. Their music only makes fact of whats going on in a confused teenagers life, its reality. Im surprised they didnt get killed by chavs while protesting XD

Okay, what the daily mail did wasn't acceptable, but was it completley nessicary to stand in London telling people that MCR saves lives?

it's a stereotype. we all know they aren't true (well most of them) but we just have to face the facts, Dumb fucks like the daily mail find a story and blow it waaaaay out of proportion.

yes hannah bond (R.I.P) killed herself, but the daily mail didn't know her...they just wanted to blame someone who takes a lot of hits for teen suicide, and she just so happened to like MCR.

people need to stop specualting this story.

Posted by alex | June 2, 2008 11:38 AM | Reply to this

Well good on them for standing up for MCR. I think that is a good thing. But half of the people standing up for them are making them look worse.
Don't get me wrong the support is appreciated by probably the band and definitely me, just a humble fan of the band.
MCR were a punk band; listen to their FIRST album. I like all their stuff, and yes some of it is concerned with death, but so what? What about movies where someone kills them self? Books? People have to realise that there is a darker side of life and just because these people sing and write songs about some of it doesn't mean they're telling people to commit suicide. Anyone who takes it like that is completely missing the point.
It really does make me quite angry.

I am truely amazed. Well done for protesting guys!! I wish I could have been there.

I'm so happy that there are people sticking up for MCR, they are getting so much shit from the media and it really isn't fair.

I don't know anything about MCR or this story in particular.

But let me say one thing Daily Mail are a racist, xenophobic, rubbish, sensationlist tabloid, who blow EVERYTHING out of proportion.

They said absolutely disgusting things about Michael Jackson too and have even admitted to hating on him. I've been a an for a long time and followed his trial vehemently, it was absolute crap.

These papers are only after one thing and that is £££

Rupert Murdoch is a dickhead.

Kids, go and research New World Order.

Its a shame that the Daily Mail just dismisses peoples opinions...

Well done to the protesters... I am not an Emo however i think anyone that takes an active stance for what they believe in is commendable...
Lets just hope this has helped in altering the publics perception of a stereotype... because otherwise anyone who listens to any sort of alternative music is basically fucked...

I really really wanted to go to this protest but I couldntt get up there.
It looks like it went well though.

My mum showed me the articles from the Daily Mail, and they actually made me really angry, so I wrote a reply to the writer, that ended up being a two page protest. Unfourtunatly it wasn't printed.
I guess some people just cant take it when they're proved wrong :)

I hope that the protest in London made people recognise what were all about!

I just want to say well done for those who took part in the march. I also want to say that the media should only report things they know about fully, they blame lots of deaths on artists because the "killer" is a metalhead or because the person just so happend to listen to a band that was metal or emo (witch is actualy a music genre, but hey) that they "killed" or self harmed because of what they wore and who they listend to.
Look at the murder in Midlothian With Joddi Jones, the evidence was, He was a metal head, he just so happend to like Marlyin Manson witch had something to do with artwork that was contrivershal. Oh that makes him guilty. I listen to metal and hip/hop and hardcore dance. why don't you blame me for anything, makes scence too. (NOTICE THE SARCASIME) (SORRY BOUT MY SPELLING)

Posted by Lee | June 2, 2008 11:51 AM | Reply to this

To be honest it was probabley the parents fault. Maybe the girl suffered a disfunctional family, and the parents won't admit it. It's very typical. Especially to blame it on the music the child listens to. Just so happen the lyrics are a little over the edge. More of a reason for her parents to blame the music and not themselves.

"The Daily Mail's coverage of the 'Emo' movement has been balanced"

well all I can say is that thats a load of crap. the daily mail is a highly bias paper
and there are those who, unfortunately, are dumb enough to believe them. I am proud to be an mcr fan - no matter what people think. I am also to be a proud fan of other bands like machine head and lets face it, they are no the same genre but who cares?
isn't there more importent issues out there like kids killing kids and the third world that need our attention, not a story thats been repeated over and over and over again because it does cause a lot of problems for people no matter what others think.
its pathetic and its plain discrimination and prejudice - its like the daily mail is the Hitler of all papers - its wrong. Simple as that.
as long as those who know believe the truth, no one can do anything about it.

hang on i read that aritcle. its said that the girl told her dad that she cut herslef as emo initiation! all they said about MCR was that they were an emo band! meh oh well the fad of emo is coming to an end half of these emos will be back to being chav's and trendys before the year is out

Posted by Beth | June 2, 2008 11:55 AM | Reply to this

My Chemical Romance have been and gone. Why is it still them that recieve the emo bullshit. We all know fine well that MCR have declared the fact that they're not emo. Why not give some digs to the real emo bands, for example The Used. No disrespect to them at all, they're a fucking awesome band, and i'd gladly put their album on anyday, but they're a hell of a lot more emo than MCR. And another thing, this whole let's march around wearing our colours (or not in most cases) and let the entire world know exactly how emo's are. So what? you wanna blue peter badge for making this entire thing a whole lot bigger? All this is doing, is taking that shit from the newspaper and making it 100 times worse. How many of the 12-15 year olds that marched down there actually read the original article anyway? I bet it wasn't even half. They just wanted a chance to show their guyliner and new skinny jeans off. For christ sake, let the emo die down for a bit. Let MCR crawl back in their holes, and write some new stuff and until then, quit claiming you listen to metal. You wouldn't know what metal was if you were slapped in the face by Dio. (ask your dads who Dio is. If he doesn't know, take off the makeup and the black, and just give up on EVERYTHING.)

and another thing Manson has been to court how many times when people have killed their mates..apparently its his music.. no its not the music this i agree wiht but you see goths going around whining about it? no SHUT UP ABOUT MCR (some people may have read a similar rant from me about being bottled at download) Fame brings plastic bottles and bad press welcome to the world once again MCR

the protest sounded good but i don't understand the hole "my chemical romance saved my life" thing..

i'm sure they didn't SAVE anyones life... they just made it better..

Posted by laura | June 2, 2008 12:01 PM | Reply to this

...how the media can turn kids standing up for what they believe in into a "publicity stunt for the latest album". So the Daily Mail are saying that My Chemical Romance personally called all these teens up and asked them to protest to gain publicity for the new album? Surely if they wanted that much publicity they'd do it themselves :)
And its also lovely how when kids do something they believe in, it gets bad publicity, if it was adults doing this, surely the Daily Mail would have heard their voice and accepted their point of view, not called it a publicity stunt.

Posted by Sheri | June 2, 2008 12:01 PM | Reply to this

Why bother, the girl killed herself because shes "suicidle". If shes suicidle because of a shitty emo band, then so be it. Not much good in protesting, it wont do much good now.

yeah, hannah bond (RIP) did say that she had cut herself as part of an emo initiation. not out of depression.
just like the majority of emos, hannah was a young teenager who completely misunderstood what the music genre stood for.
to everyone defending mcr, stop. you might think you're helping but you're not; you're just encouraging the debate and inviting criticism and negative stereotyping. fucking idiots.

I am one of those people that can say that MCR played a big part in saving my life. With the comfort of their music and knowing i wasnt the only one and having people care about me and stick by me whatever i did wrong helped me and MCR are partly the reason i am still here today. Why would any band in their right mind want to KILL their own FANS?!?!?!
MCR fans like myself are NOT a cult. I know many MCR fans that are probably the happiest people I know and there is no way they would turn to self harm because it is 'cool'. What is 'cool' about physical pain? What is 'cool' about being scared for life? What is 'cool' about death?
Self harming is an illness. Not a plea for attention. Anybody who self harms or knows anybody who self harms i beg of you to get help. I know from experience that it is not a good road to go down.

MCR vow to help their fans through their sufferings. They dont put people through more pain. The black parade was an albumn to relate to those suffering from grievence and losing loved ones. Not ENCOURAGING IT!!!!!

I repsect the fans of MCR that were able to attend this (well justified) protest. Im dissapointed that i couldnt go but I live to far away.

I just hope that this story will reach the ears of those who really need to hear it. Suicide is a tragedy and it affects too many people. There is no single explanation for suicide, let alone blaming it completely on a 'sick cult' that doesnt even exist!!!!

oh and hannah wasnt a rock fan, she was an emo fan there is a huuuge difference. for instance rock is not gay, emo is

I think it's funny when people post stuff like "MCR suck!", and "you're all emo's" and "I'd cut myself if I listened to MCR."

Well, there's a simple option there, DON'T.

If you hate them so much, why get involved in something that other people love?

It's pathetic. There are always going to be people who don't like My Chemical Romance, (and I will never be one of those people) but why does that give you the right to slate the band, what they stand for and the people that listen to them?

It doesn't. So maybe you would be better off spending your time supporting something YOU believe in as opposed to criticisng this.

It doesn't look cool to "talk shit" over a computer monitor and keyboard.

When you're famous and making a difference to people's lives, maybe then you have room to judge.

I for one actually read what was in the Daily Mail, and it was pretty damn biased. You, like many other people out there, are clearly sticking with an "emo" stereotype and not giving people a chance.

In my opinion, that makes you just as ignorant as a racist or a homophobe.

Learn to understand. That's what education is for.

Thanks (:

This is fucking ridiculous. If some 'chav' who listens to 50 Cent or Kanye West kills someone, THEY don't get blamed. And they're the ones promoting the 'gangster' lifestyle with their guns and bullet-proof vests and whatnot. So why do My Chemical Romance and Marilyn Manson and other rockstars get the blame for killings, whether it's suicide or homicide? All these journalists are, are ignorant, greedy pigs. Well done MCR fans for standing up for what you believe in!

Besides poltics-related stuff, nothing has pissed me off more than this in a long time. How the fuck can people be that fucking ignorant? How can they blame a suicide on a band? My Chemical Romance have thousands of fans, and as far as I know, they're still standing! So one girl commits suicide who just happens to like them? The blame is autoatically dumped on them? I am not trying to be offensive but Hannah Bond obviously had some issues. Surely some measley little band could not be enough to drive a 'perfectly stable' girl to kill herself? In my opinion, if anyone should be blamed, it's the parents. What normal parent sees their kid has been cutting themselves to pieces and then think 'oh, she said she'll stop so everything's fine'. MCR are globally known to save lives, any proper reporter who does their research would know that. And what actually made me laugh out loud, was this 'emo fans believe they go to The Black Paradewhen they die' business. Show me one person that actually believes that and I'll cut off my right leg. Well done MCR fans for sticking up for MCR! R.I.P. Hannah Bond.

The press should be free to write whatever they like. i read the paper, clearly unlike those at marble arch, and it was CLEAR the paper was reporting on the feelings of a distressed mother and only hinted that the emo cult could have been responsibe. all this shows is that MCR fans are completely illiterate. Furthermore i think the paper had every right to blame the cult, has anyone read the MCR lyrics, i mean what sort of band has songs called DEAD?, DEAD what? these guys need a serious reality check, as do those who frankly embarrassed themselves at marble arch!

why cant everyone just appreciate thatr we all have different musical tastes. im not a fan of mcr but am very understanding that they mean so much to so many young people.

the beatles used to sing about LCD...did people die from drug use in the 60s? HELL YES. Did the media slate them for it? NOPE

carry on the protest and stand up for what you beleive in! its commendable

haha YOU DIDNT READ THE ARTICLE!!!!!! if u did u would have seen very balenced and fair writng. and your not an army - your pathetic, if you were an army you would have defended MCR last year at download with a bayonet charge, and stormed the daily mail building with a battering ram. Face it - your a cult, in 5 years time you will look back and say "my god didnt we look stupid" and u do!

I'm so glad MCR fans did this! MCR do save lives and they shouldn't be blamed for a girl's suicide just because she was a fan of them. I couldn't go to the protest because London is over 4 hours from where I live, but if I lived near London I definitely would have gone!

Posted by Stacey | June 2, 2008 1:38 PM | Reply to this

i love mcr AND IM NOT AN EMO!
plus emo's are cool ppl!... im sure thers jst as much metalheads/goths/chavs e.c.t that self harm.
i would hav come to the protest if i lived near London!!

It looks like the emos big day out! Lots of posing, not much protesting...

Posted by The Toad | June 2, 2008 1:48 PM | Reply to this

For people who are still blaming MCR, even after seeing this page.. They obviously haven't done enough research. Like everyone is saying, they do say stuff like "Get help if you're depressed" and "We are a band who want to save your life." They're helping people, as these pictures of fans show, not destroying their lives. The Daily Mail chose those particular lyrics purposely for the artical. What about "I am not afraid to keep on living"?

Posted by Amy | June 2, 2008 1:49 PM | Reply to this

Ok, im a big fan of MCR but this protest is NOT gunna change anything, no one listens anyway and i just think its abit stupid

fair play to them but i wouldnt do it!

NO POINT!

Posted by Haylie | June 2, 2008 1:49 PM | Reply to this

if the media want to talk about cults they should talk about Scientology..
thats far more dangerous than an 'emo cult'

Posted by rebecca | June 2, 2008 1:52 PM | Reply to this

Yes it was completely necessary to stand in London telling people that MCR save lives because they DO! That's the whole point of the band.

I wish I could have been there... But I live on the other side of the world... *bummed*

I hate how newspapers just look for someone to blame because the parents can't admit that they didn't take her seriously enough (like when she cut her wrists) and could have probably prevented her suicide.

I hope people quit stereotyping "emo" soon. Last week I was TA'ing a grade 9 art class and some snotty girls came up and asked if I was "emo" because I had an MCR t-shirt and a hoodie that said DEAD!. It wouldn't have bothered me if they didn't say it like they thought "emo" was filth.

BTW I said yes just to put them off. I'm not even "emo" anyway. MCR are just my favourite band.

i think this protest was a very good idea, and i was gutted i couldnt take part in it, as i was travelling home from london the day before the protest D:

people who think mcr did influence this girl to kill herself, and who say that mcr's lyrics are emo and all that...seriously, go fuck yourselves. because if you really LISTENED to mcr or took the fucking time to read the lyrics and think about/find out about what they ACTUALLY mean instead of assuming its all about killing yourself..then you'd realise your completely WRONG.
they are all against suicide and it is UNFAIR to blame them for the death of a teenager they didnt even know.

Posted by lucayy | June 2, 2008 1:53 PM | Reply to this

It went amazing.
SOME people listened. The point went across.
Psh, even the people that came to fuck it up ended up joining in!

Posted by Fiona | June 2, 2008 1:53 PM | Reply to this

I read both articles in the Daily Mail, in the paper. Neither were fair, particularly well researched or balanced. You can't blame a type of music for something like a complex emotional disorder such as depression that leads people to commit suicice.

However I think the protest lost sight a bit of the tragedy that occurred, the fact that MCR were one of the bands unfairly mentioned in the article is not the part that focus should be on. I think that people need to shutup about their negative feelings on a scene enough to recognise that a young girl took her own life.

The fact that you love a band or hate emo is irrelevant, making into a scene is the dangerous part, that is manipulating young people, not through the music, but through the fact that this idea that has been created. The idea that to belong to it you have to self harm, which is nothing to do with the bands.

People should stop biching about hating bands long enough to take a good hard look at what has happened. It just shows that social scenes are dangerous. Similar to how Marilyn Manson was not responsible for Columbine, but maybe some the ideas that became widely associated with that kind of music were.

Tragedies like this should not be used a forum for you to express how much you hate "fucking emo music", they should be seen as example of how dangerous stereotyping and social cliques can be to vunerable young people.

"the beatles used to sing about LCD...did people die from drug use in the 60s? HELL YES."

Television screens didn't mess people up, LSD did :)

As far as the protest goes... sad. Really sad. I'm sure people have better things to do with their weekends than make themselves look hilariously stupid, 'cause I've been laughing my arse off at those pictures!

Weldone for sticking up for what you believe in, to show The Daily Mail that there all a bunch of twats writing this kind of stuff. There all just posh snubs looking for a story to sell there newspaper, pathetic.

I hope the company learns from there mistakes and if they write another article like this, I know MCR fans are gonna be back.

Posted by chris! | June 2, 2008 2:19 PM | Reply to this

you are such a hypocrite, your saying they cant have an opinion because theyre not in a famous band??
since when did you have to be in a band to have an opinion
and you obviously have yours
you can tell an MCR fan a mile off
because they all look like dicks
the newspaper reports had hardly anything to do with "emo" culture or whatever
any excuse to get some attention

Posted by lucy182 | June 2, 2008 2:23 PM | Reply to this

both sides have completely missed the point here... the issue here is about reporters actually bothering to research what they are writing about. the author states that 'the black parade is a place emos believe they go when they die'. what the fuck is that?! did he even TRY to research his article or did he just make it up?

however, the fact that mcr fans have taken it as a personal hit is also ridiculous, and dressing up in black and pink holding up signs with mcr lyrics on is unlikely to change the way the paper goes about researching it's stories

Posted by pete | June 2, 2008 2:34 PM | Reply to this

Personally, i dont listen to MCR and i have read the Daily Mail's actual reports, including the one published two summers ago...

They missed the point completely, and described emos in such a bad way, they seem to think that emos are people who want others to die, and i dont think thats quite true...

As mentioned, I don't like MCR's music but fair play to the fans for defending their heroes, its not MCRs fault that the girl killed herself, she obviously had bigger problems and its terrible that they weren't solved...

It's so funny how all these Emo's stick up for a band whos lead singer stated in an American magazine, and I quote:

I think emo is f*cking garbage, it's bullshit. I think there's bands that unfortunately we get lumped in with that are considered emo and by default that starts to make us emo.” and, "I think emo's a pile of sh*t

"i read the paper, clearly unlike those at marble arch, and it was CLEAR the paper was reporting on the feelings of a distressed mother and only hinted that the emo cult could have been responsibe." Are you freaking kidding me, Dude? Are you SURE you read it - with both eyes? Because as a fellow journalist, I am here to tell you - and the Daily Mail - that those articles couldn't have been more biased, alarmist or exploitive.

"No child is safe from the sinister emo cult?"

"My Chemical Romance's lyrics promote violence and self-harm?"

"Emos like to wear studded belts, long black fringes over one eye, and cut their wrists as part of the emo initiation rite?"

How is that unbiased and sympathetic reporting? It is clear to me that you also believe that there is such an "emo cult," which may be part of the problem here.

Oh and by the way, I don't think that with your grammar and spelling issues, you are one identify anyone else as illiterate. I am an MCR fan - notice the vast difference between my literacy and your own.

You contradict yourself as well, "aggreed" (notice the two g's in agreed) - on the one hand you try arguing that the article only hinted at the "emo cult" being responsible for Hannah's tragic death, yet on the other you state the "the paper had every right to blame the cult."

Then you ask if anyone has read MCR's lyrics. I ask, have you? Lyrics such as "I am not afraid to keep on living," "We'll carry on," "Do or die, you'll never make me, because the world will never take my heart, go and try, you'll never break me?" The lyric you tried to quote is from Dead! - a song about a cancer patient encountering an unfeeling doctor giving him bad news.

The kids at Marble Arch hardly embarrassed themselves - in fact, they earned the praise of every REPUTABLE journalist out there. The Daily Mail has demonstrated itself to be on par only with The National Enquirer.

The Daily Mail saw fit to exploit the pain and suffering of the Bonds for their own agenda, and if your argument is truly that "The press should be free to write what they like" then the same should go for My Chemical Romance.

Kindly research and reread your arguments before posting them; you'll embarrass yourself a lot less often. Also, invest in a spellchecker.

Yeah but the bands people like I (don't know about blinkme) like don't get blamed for peoples deaths. Or if they do they stand up themselves and fight their own battles. Did Marilyn Manson have an army of clone appearenced kids stand up for him in arch ways when the Columbine Masacre happened? NOPE! And that was alot more serious. The truth is bands like MCR, Funeral for a Friend, are synonymous with suicide because it's little weapy emo kids that listen to them who talk about killing themselves because they think they have the worst lives in the world, and this music only supports their mental self centered opinion.

ohmygod.
can the papers get anymore frikkin dumb?
'Emo' is a MUSIC GENREE!!!!!!
i swear no one understands that anymore.
MCR isn't emo. I know PLENTY more 'emo' bands and i don't want to go kill myself. Bands like MCR talk about the pain and heartache teens go through and actually have emotion in their music.
'Chav' and Rap music tells everyone that raping and killing makes you cool and streetwise.
Hannah who obviously was depressed and must of had some troubled times, knew her parents didn't know the modern stereotypes and used depression as a fashion statement, to cover her depression.
I do not think the fact that she wasn't allowed to stay at her boyfriends caused her to kill herself. The papers always hide little details, and i'm sure we do not know the full story.
The Goverment is meant to be trying to stop children killing each other, not just because of how we dress but of how we act. Allowing the Daily Mail to get away with stereotyping is basically saying all 'emos' self harm and that it is filled with depression. Which everyone knows, it is not.
Media is a huge influence, and they should apologize fot not just disrespecting MCR and the followers, but also Hannahs death.
I myself have been called 'emo' and that i should 'go die' because i dress how i want to.
Most 'emos' are lovely young people and are constantly hit upon because they are who they are.
It's a disgrace honestly and it makes me mad to think that the world is so narrow minded that they honestly can't open their eyes and realise that everyone is different, and everyone likes different things, from music to food to colours.

I send my respect to all those who protested for what they believe in, and to Hannahs family during this hard time.

Sally. xo

The point people are completely missing here ALL together is that most of the media is RUN by the government. This was just another opertunity to distract the emo kids from doing SERIOUS protesting by EVER so mildly targetting a band which has a large following of sheep. Wanna protest about something worth while? Try protesting about the Iraq war. Try protesting about price of petrol. Try protesting about SOMETHING THAT MATTERS FOR ONCE!!!

Try doing something more pro-active. Try to get people to boy-cot the paper if this really means so much to you rather than stand around and take a defensive stance. The band won't even be around forever within 10 years it won't even matter while serious issues like Global warming, encrouching world domination by America, the encrouching debt the world is in which is owed to a tiny, TINY portion of the population. okay so what if the emo cult is blamed .... but what does MCR have to do with that? The whole aim of this protest was so that the press stops blaming MCR for the suicides of these kids. Suicide is a cowardly way of getting rid of your problems (especially if they were as pathetic as not being allowed to sleep over at a friend's place . I mean come on!

This "ph33r teh 3m0 cul7" thing in the media is still going on? This is beyond ridiculous. I'm guessing if someone is self harming and then commits suicide, their liking of a certain band called MCR is not what tipped them over the edge, shit as they may be :P I'm guessing there was more to this girl's troubles than MCR, and I think it's ridiculous that The Daily Mail is still scaremongering over this bullshit.

Its sad that anything to do with MCR gains the most response on this site but I guess it prooves that Kerrang as turned its back on real music and now focous on the 14 year old myspace girl market....its a shame. MCR fans need to grow up end of. That protest was pathetic and almost as bad as thier music. God I could imagine all the girls there with their myspace names containing something stupid like "[56.4K]" and all the guys in thier soho's.......

MCR are horrific and bring any negative publicity on themselves, their immature fanbase don't help either.

Oh how I await the angry responses......dicks.

The media totaly twisted it to put themselves in a good light.

they said 40 people turned up, when alot of people reported it to be 150 - 250

and if it was around lunchtime, i doubt they where gonna starve themselves, therefore it would resemble a picknick.

they have totaly gone out of hand about an 'emo' cult. you never know what could of happened in her life! it said she had an arugment with her mum, amybe she always argued with her mum and was fed up of it, not that i'm blaming hannah's mum, i would give her my regards if i met her but its a possiblilty.

the media love to twist and drag things out of proportion until they bleed it dry and mock it as it dies.

if we all belive newpapers word for word, then we as a country hav no mind of opion or our own thoughts.

not all emos self harm.

and tbh, mcr is often refered to as a wemo band (mcr also strongly disagree they are an emo band) so why on earth their lyrics would want peopel to kill themselves i dont know. calling a song dead! is just a title, and if you actually hear the lyrics, it's not about killing yourself or how the world is full of hate, the theme is quiet bouncy and i assume it has somthign to do about leading up to entering the black parade if i was to go even more techniqal.

you call 'emo's sad and pathetic. well if you hate a group of people, like i hate chavs, then you will say such things, but try and think about things from their point of view, instead of jumping in with 'sterotypical' types, cause in thoose pictures, do any of thoose people look like they would rather be at home slitting their wrists? are they smiling?

yeah, rant over xD

An artist creates or writes something to articulate how he or she is feeling at a point in time in their OWN life. When someone one million miles away reads it, and applies it to their own life, the writer has no control over that. 10 people can read or hear the same song and somehow get 10 different interpretations. I do not doubt that there are people that listen to music and hear suicide and self mutilation, but, because they are lacking for something. I'm an MCR fan, I for one do not think about killing myself when listening to them, or any band for that matter. But, I'm not suicidal. One usually follows the other. Death is a part of life, as are feelings of insecurity. It isn't unusual to find the subject matter in all forms of art. But acting out thoughts of suicide is a whole different ball game. Concerning the ongoing "emo" debate. The fact is you cannot reinvent the wheel. "Guyliner and skinny jeans" and the lyrical styling now being dubbed "emo" are decades older than most of these kids have even been on the planet. If you want to blame someone for "emo" blame The Cure and The Smiths, blame Morrissey. Talk about "emo"! If you wanna blame someone for men dressing like women, blame David Johannson and The New York Dolls or David Bowie. Or guys like Iggy Pop who made a name for themselves with self mutilation on stage. It's a fashion that's all but new. And yes boys and girls, that's all it is, fashion. If youre really hurting yourself over it, try to keep in mind that scars last a lot longer than trends. If you really want people to take bands like MCR seriously as artists, as they should be because they are great writers, stop playing into the stereotypes. I mean, do you imagine Gerard Way gets up in the morning, puts on makeup and puts on some funeral leader/band conductor uniform to go to the grocery store? Get Real! He puts on a t-shirt and a base ball cap, no make-up, (sorry guys, Ive seen him) it's just a stage thing. A little girl is gone for reasons far beyond any music magazine fashion trend. Scapegoats are a dangerous business.

I don't see how MCR have bought this is upon themselves.
The media drew attention to "emo".
What they should be doin i trying to get parents to understand their childrens problems, not scaring them into thinking there are cults.
People will alway pre judge bands based on image, and whethe you like or hate them it doesnt matter. A young girl has died, and instead of tying to see how we can help other young teenagers, the media is focusing on a band, and a culture they will never wuite understand.

i think its awesome that so many of their fans are sticking up for them. in repsonse to why they called a song DEAD! the album is about a man who has cancer and it takes him through the after life in the form of the black parade. its stupid that its like 'omg u should go and self harm coz the song says DEAD!', its pathetic. and MCR arnt even EMO!
i agree that the press should be able to freely write about what they want but blaming it on music is stupid
the band themselves hav saud that they want to save other peoples lives - it saved their own lives, theyv hav times when they were alcoholics and addicted to drugs. they managed to live they themselves are proof that the band saves people lives!
so good on the fans for sticking up for them!

Argh, Theres been alot of mixed feelings about the recent press matters over My Chemical Romance linking to Hannah Bond's suicide.

In my opinion, the daily mail wrote fair articles, considering the feelings of the family and my chemical romance fans. I feel that the daily mail were wrong to point out one band, judging them stereotypically as 'emo.' This has never meant or stood for anything and never will. It is a stereotype, commonly used in teen age groups. Stereotypes account for any group of people, based on what they wear and the music they listen to.

This should not have been used against a band commonly know for their anti-suicide edge.

I feel that it was fair-play to the fans to come-back at the daily mail. They were simply trying to get their point across that the recent press coverage may have been exagerated, and in fact My chemical Romance did not lean towards suicide, but totally against it.

To the people who are 'against' My chemical romance, or dislike the recent actions of the fans, any person, in any situation has the right to legally 'stick-up' for what they believe in. If you don't like the actions of the fans, there is no need to use abusive language, or call them such things as 'pathetic.' I'm sure that if there were a situation you felt strongly about, then you would protest too.

Afterall, things like this have been happening since before many of us were born.

Many writers, or even people with opinions will write about things that they may not be completely knowledgeable about. I feel that if a person can truly judge such a thing as 'suicide' on the lyrics or even a basic outlook on the band, then they should 'know their stuff' as it were.
Mcr lyrics shown in the protest such as 'I am not afraid to keep on living' clerly display the anti-suicide bids of the band.

It is fair that many people may be against the recent protests, just as the fans were abut the press. But everyone has the right to do what they please, so let them. If you don't like it then say, but don't become abusive, afterall we all listen to music, no matter what it is. Every genre can be criticised for different things, such as 'RnB' for womanising. If people don't like it, then they have the right to say. Some is not publicised as much as others.

Respects to the family of Hannah Bond.

Well done to the fans for standing up for what you beleive in, I'm sure it took great strength and courage.

MCR save lives? what a load of crap, i'm not saying they take lives, but they definately don't bloody save them, i mean is that a caption they came up with themselves? according to MCR when you die it's one big jolly parade, and what was with the teenagers video and the gasmasks? if you want messages in music or music thats means something then emo certainly isn't the way whens its all just a mainstream culture, emos aren't individual at all because there is so many of them. It's a cult built on bullshit (kinda like communism). nuff said really.

Posted by Jordan Cowell | June 2, 2008 4:39 PM | Reply to this

I agree with SOME of what you are saying. MCR_Rock's response is pretty pathetic and it is very hypocritical. However, i am an MCR fan and i don't always wear black and wear make-up (i actually do not wear make up at all). Not everyone looks the same if they are a fan of a band. It is possible to like the music and not dress like them!

Posted by Jack | June 2, 2008 4:40 PM | Reply to this

I'm really glad the fans did this, MCR get blamed for a lot of things like this. Actually, music gets blamed a hell of a lot. Suicide is something deeper and you can't blame music/MCR for it.
Its nice to see people sticking up for what they believe instead of letting the news papers get away with giving the rest of the public false views on certain groups of people.
MCR Fans and "emos" get enough stick already without the news papers encouraging it.
I'm proud of everyone who took part in this, good on 'em

xoxo

I think that the Daily Mail and other newspapers should be utterly disgusted with themselves. All they have done is to add to the pressure that 'emos' have to put up with. They have alienated a large number of people, myself included. I once felt that The Daily Mail was a good source of information, but they have completely disgraced themsleves

tbh i think emo is just a phase in which teenagers go through after something happens to them like a break up or simliar event. MCR in my opinion just d music i have never known them to say dont commit suicide. Emo on sings about depressing stuff and basicly shit like 'omg my gf broke up with with me'. This sort of music send out the rong message where as metal bands r about standing up for wot we believe in, example is waking the demon is about bullying, it actually means something un like emo, so emo does squat, it dont help us or people it just makes them more suicidal

Posted by Karl Fry | June 2, 2008 4:48 PM | Reply to this

Posted by Karl Fry | June 2, 2008 4:50 PM | Reply to this

I love my chemical romance. Does that make me emo? erm no. I do not need a label and i don't think anyone else does either! It's pathetic seriously, to all the people saying how 'shit' my chem' are, just think like it is a band that you love or whatever. If people are suicidal then it is probably because of personal issues and not the music that they listen to and on that point, MY CHEMICAL ROMANCE ARE NOT A SUICIDE CULT! Maybe the daily mail should research these matters, and hannah bond (R.I.P) was a fan of the band right? So she would have known that they don't support anyone wanting to harm themselves!! They are (one of the few bands) all about the fans.

I'm a fan of the band so apparently my opinion doesn't matter, but the daily mail are BULLSHIT AND NOT BALANCED.

ahem.
I love Kerrange :)

Hi Amused. Yes, they may have a song called "Dead!" but did you know its about a cancer patient? NOT a suicidal teenaed. Did you aldo not realise they also have a song called "It's Not a Fashion Statement, Its a Deathwish" about self harming. And to be quite honest, Im sure theyve saved many more lives than YOU ever have. You may think MCR fans embarrassed themselves at Marble Arch, but by not doing your research I think you are embarrasing yourself so much more.

LMAO youre the sad bastard you dumbass!! Do you really think MCR are the only band that have hair over their eyes?!?!?!?! And do you really think they were the FIRST? At least they dont dance about half naked like the majority of "singers" out there, at least they have self-respect and want to make a difference! MCR are ANTI-SUICIDE and a positive influence on any person, teenager or not. Yes, they may have changed, but they are still a brilliant band and I for one think its great that they are reaching as many people and touching as many people as they are.

We should all start to stand up to the media as they give the bands bad reputation and they purposley worry parents when there is NOTHING to worry about. We should be fighting to stop these people who get caught up in these cults and self harm or kill them themselves because they think they have to. They are either being brainwashed or are mentally we should be helping them not blaming bands such as my chem.

omg is this pathetic lil argument ever actually gonna end?
so the daily mail called mcr a cult so wat protestin against it prob made them think it even more its really pathetic
everyone has these sterotypical view
emo being sitting in a corner , mcr playin , slashing their wrists n wanting to die
bt hey every genre of music has a sterotype which is often wrong
in all honesty tho how can u really expect the daily mail to understand all these different types of kids , they jus look at the facts and see tht loadsa kids hav commited suicide who listen 2 mcr , they r jus stating facts
bt for fucks sake get over it
kinda shows the age of the fans tho really 11-15 yr olds who cant handle criticism
surely u hav better things to do in ur life then read the paper see tht they r getting at ur music n hav a fuckin march across london
waste of time the papers jus write wat the public wants to read get over it

Like you have a right to write about literacy! You don't even use capital letters! MCR lyrics can make people feel normal, how are you suppose to feel like you are normal if every song is happy and you're depressed. If you can't find something to make yourself feel normal than that can leave you feeling even more depressed.

Posted by Abi | June 2, 2008 5:23 PM | Reply to this

Im not a fan of MCR, infact I don't even like them. But I know that they don't encourage suicide, they are against it. It is extremely unfair for the media to say 'we're going to blame some band because we know nothing about emo' seriously media FUCK YOU. Some writer will piss off the wrong person and cause a riot. No offence emos but I doubt this will be you, your nice and peacefull (most of you). But seriously media, keep your mouth shut about things you don't know about.

Okay; So i am not an MCR fan.
Sure i like the band. They are by no means one of my favourites though.
I do however have alot of respect for them, and for most musicians to be honest.

I am absolutely appauled at the article the Daily Mail wrote. They did nothing to help society but just added fuel to the fire. Oh and by the way, i DID read it. It was absoluetly ridiculous.

I do not ever see the point in newspapers or people blaming bands or artists for bad things happening in the world. It happened with Columbine and Marilyn Manson. I don't like him either but he had nothing to do with those boys shooting up their school.

People will do bad things, people will kill themselves, it happens! I know some people who wouldn't be classed as 'emo', in fact the complete opposite; who went through dark phases in life and cut themselves.

It is a sad thing that Hannah did, but it should not have caused so much contraversy. The parents just needed something/someone to blame for their daughters suicide.

Music isn't the problem, people are.

Posted by Sinéad | June 2, 2008 5:34 PM | Reply to this

its great they're standing up for a truly amazing band. I love MCR they're a great band who I listen to if I'm feeling bad or feeling great I've never cared what people thought of me with what I listen to or how I dress it ain't there business. I'm not goth or emo but I wear black jeans at times and band t-shirts with sweatbands, fingerless gloves and gonna dye me hair black. not to fit in with others but cos I want to do it.
The people in the daily mail, and the media are a bunch of cunts. The only reason why the daily mail attacked the emo culture is because they thought they're teenagers they won't do anything. But they did with a protest.
Fuck the daily mail and any other media who decides to bad mouth great bands such as MCR. They make great music, and do so much for there fanbase they haven't sold out or anything, and do what they can to help us.

WOULD YOU ALL PLEASE SHUT THE FUCK UP

music is subjective any song could have a different meaning to anyone

so no u stupid fucks some people might listen to mcr and think about killing them selves, i mean really have you read the majority of the lyrics, "oooo but no in one song they say i'm not afraid to kind of living" WOOOW ONE FUCKING SONG

but them on the other side people may listen to mcr and it makes them really happy

MUSIC IS SUBJECTIVE IT MEANS DIFFERENT THINGS TO DIFFERENT PEOPLE

GROW UP YOU IDIOTS AND STOP PISSING AROUND BECAUSE SOME PAPER INSULTED YOUR FAVOURATE BAND

People always comment that "emos" are suicidal and antisocial, yet if you read the comments on here, it seems to be every other musical fan that's insulting the peaceful protest. It was a fantastic day and everyone got along, there was no "suicide cult" as hinted at and no insulting of the Daily Mail?

Why are some people so immature to their peers? We're all music fans, and just because some of you don't appreciate our type of music and feel you need to label us, it doesn't mean you have to discriminate and insult us.

Just what I think -shrugs- I'm ready for your scathing comments now :)

Free hugs? Wasn't it a protest?

I watced some videos of this whole thing on Youtube. All I saw of the "demonstration" was a load of girls gathered around singing MCR songs. From what I saw of them at the Daily Mail offices was them shouting "fuck the Daily Mail" and running at a guy holding newspapers and screaming. It looked pathetic, pointless and childish. I guess that was all there was to be expected really.

Yes it is silly that MCR were blamed for this but to be honest the press has never exactly been reliable or intelligent.

People who complain about a march that probably didnt affect them in any way should probably go and die in a fire
The daily mail have over-hyped a story so much that they forgot that the bands involved are in fact happy people. Plus if writing songs about death is instantly emo thats another way of saying Slayer is emo too, which is a LOT of crap

"people who conplain about the march should go die in a fire" very mature

only mcr fans would make such a deal about this, the papers write shit all the time wether its true or not, that what they are paid to do. a few people who from the photo's look like there parents would have been watching over them from a distance, think by doing the march they'd have achieved anything i think not.
There are more important things in life than defending your favourite band, because of a paper.
Wait until you mcr lovers reach a age where you have real live problems/ situations, and not stressing over a emo comment. Christ grow up!!!!!

"Only after her death would they discover how she had secretly chatted online to emo followers all over the world, talking about death and of the 'black parade' - a place where emos believe they go after they die."

Adults actually believe this?

I'm not emo and to be honest, I can't stand them but this whole thing is stupid.

Generally, people join groups so they aren't considered outcasts and are HAPPY. If she decided to commit suicide, even after becoming emo, it proves that being emo has nothing to do with her death.

This girl probably did this for attention and to try to get recognised as a martyr. Obviously, by "demonstrating" this story is getting the publicity which she would have wanted and all those slightly messed up kids out there will be like "Hey, she's getting all this attention, everyone knows her, I think I'll go and kill myself, just so everyone on the internet discusses me."

Posted by Emily | June 2, 2008 6:44 PM | Reply to this

Its pretty darn stupid how the Daily Mail were blaming MCR for what happened. And lets face it, this isn't the first time somthing like this has happened. MCR have been attacked by the media, both in America and Britain, numerous times.

It was really about time a protest was in order, and I hope it'll make the Daily Mail/ etc think twice before they write another biased, one sided report.

I just to say, good job to all those who went :)! :D You lot did a great job!

Andymark is about as Chav as the Queen.

And what's wrong with Kanye West? in a way your just contradicting yourself by taking offence at someones dislike of a band and showing your own dislike for another artist.

Rap/Hip-Hop music isn't just for Chavs. And what the hell classes as a chav these days anyways? it's such a poor stereotype, like Emo.

Posted by Dave | June 2, 2008 7:05 PM | Reply to this

Ok, in my opinion a band shouldn't be blamed for the actions of one person because it is a person's choice to kill themselves or slit their wrists, not a band's. MCR didn't exactly walk up to her and say "kill yourself" did they??? They say the opposite. So the only person that is fully responsible in this situation is Hannah. I mean I listen to bands such as MCR, HIM, Bullet For My Valentine etc. and I have NEVER once thought about slitting my wrists or commiting suicide...I'm perfectly happy. And I'm sure alot of other people who listen to the similar sort of music I do will agree with me. So the fact that the media are blaming a genre of music on someone's death is stupid and immature. You can't really just assume that someone killed themselves because of the music they listen to, she probably had alot of other problems in her life that were upsetting her. You just never know. So quit with all this shit about bands being the cause of teenage suicide because its all a load of BOLLOCKS.

Good on the protestors!! I wanted to go, but i live in the North! it was too far away! :(!
I'm a big fan of MCR! and im not "emo" and i dont consider MCR to be "emo"!
and calling the protestors "pathetic" is pathetic itself! everyone has a right to have themselves to be heard! its called Freedom of Expression!
everyone has the right to listen to any style of music they like, and any artist they desire! one of my mates listens to Slipknot for example! i cant stand them myself! but i dont have a go at him for it! its his choice!

the gril was just seeking attention! she was spoilt!!
she said slitting your wrists is an initiation into "emo" culture! is it b*ll*cks!! im not "emo", i used to think i was! i never slit my God damn wrists!! my mate considers herself "emo" and she doesnt slit her wrists!! and most ignoramii think that all rock music is "emo"!

Im forever tagged "emo" even when i wear my Muse jacket! Which, btw, has "MUSE" in big letters on both sides!! It doesnt look "emo", if that is even possible! How can something look like a style of music?! because that is what "emo" is supposed to be, music, right?

Well anyway!

I think theres a lot to be said on this matter! and no opinion is worng! tbh idc if you call me because i like MCR! you can say what you like! its water of a rubber glove!!

Wether you like MCR or not, they deserve respect! Theyve done alot!! and theyve been through bad patches and gotten through it!! I dont like some bands but they still have my respect for doing great things, like selling millions of albums, and winning awards! Thats not easy! but the buggers can do it, and for that i respect them, wether i like them or not!

well anyway! i have kind of slipped of the subject here so,, ill end at the bottom of the comment!!

if you read all of that, thanks!!

I went to the protest. I'm 27. I'm reasonably attractive. I'm not fat. I'm not emo. There were lots of people there - I'd estimate at least 200. The media took a big interest in the event and a lot of very valid and important points were raised. Though the protest was primarily about MCR and by their fans, it was also about unfair scapegoating of 'alternative' music by the press, biased and alarmist reporting that encourages prejudice, and prejudice in general.
THOSE OF YOU WHO THINK THIS IS A BIG JOKE SHOULD BE ASHAMED OF YOURSELVES. A YOUNG GIRL DIED, AND HER DEATH IS BEING USED TO SCARE PARENTS INTO THINKING THAT THE 'EMO' SCENE IS RESPONSIBLE. IT IS DISRESEPCTFUL AND FRANKLY, DISGUSTING.
If you really want to sit around emo-bashing, why dont you show some respect to Hannah Bond's memory and do it somewhere else. This page should be for sensible and honest opinions.
Those of you who are posting things like 'emos should just go and kill themselves already' and 'mcr are shit' are just as bad as the reporters who wrote these articles in my opinion. Stop encouraging the sterotypes and prejudice, or one day it'll be your chosen music scene or subculture that gets victimised, and you will have brought it on yourselves.

Jeez! Its people like you that are no better than the press. Such a narrow minded simpleton view, don't comment on something you quite clearly have no concept or understanding of. So quite simply I wanna say "Fuck Off"

I think that this is, quite frankly, getting rather ridiculous. I'm a 13 year old girl who has been into My Chemical Romance for quite some time. I am sick and tired of being labelled as emo, everywhere I go. I am a person, nothing else. I like My Chemical Romance, big deal. They write amazing songs, with lyrics that encourage people to stay strong. The line, "I am not afraid to keep on living" springs to mind. I don't seem to be labelled "goth" or "metalhead" because I like Bullet for my Valentine, Trivium, Avenged Sevefold etc. Strange that.

The Daily Mail has clearly reported on something that they have no clue about. They have just been hearing the basics that a minority of emo's project the emo image as. I know a fair few emo's who do not self harm, glamourise death, or any of the other preposterous things the Daily Mail have been suggesting.

Look at some of the comments parents and kids alike have left under the article on the Daily Mail website, and you'll see people disagree completley with what the Daily Mail has been writing.

I personally think that this is out of spite, since Gerard Way said the Daily Mail is shit because of their last attack on the band.

I recommend that they look a little further into what they're reporting so that everyone gets the proper account of the story instead of some fucked up version!

I'm going against my principles here and posting on a messageboard, and that's after reading about three comments at different points in this post.

My Chemical Romance are, despite people's protests, emo. So are Bullet For My Valentine. Slipknot, Less Than Jake, Hell, even Metallica. (Now I know I've got your attention!) The reason I say this is because Emo (shockingly) is short for Emotional.

Now read lyrics by any of your favourite bands. The majority of them will draw from their own experiences, and thing that are close to them, and have caused them either emotional pain or caused them to (this is the part that might really offend!) get upset. Oh it's true. Even James Hetfield, Corey Taylor and Max Cavalera have squirted a few tears.

Now back to my topic in hand. My Chemical Romance, if anything, are Pop Rock.

Now to the "Emo" subject and the perception that they are all suicidal wrist cutters. Go out, and by a copy of Slayers "Divine Intervention" - Inside Cover? An arm with Slayer cut into the wrist. Slipknot, Korn, Manson, Papa Roach - all self harmers. Yet, if I were to suggest a second time in one post that these bands are "Emo", I would surely face the biggest backlash since World War 2.

I'm not going to go on and be a hippy and be all "Let's All Love Each Other!!" but surely, every Rock Fan faces that inevitable backlash from the rest of society, so why must more of a rift be caused?

As for the last post I read, and My Chemical Romance not caring about their fans, just their money - As a 22 year old (still young by a lot of you 'wiser' folk out there's standard's) who has seen probably around 300 bands perform, My Chemical Romance are firstly one of the bands who do genuinly care for the people who come to their shows, making sure that everyone is okay and everyone walks away, and secondly give them a hell of a lot of bang for their buck.

Anyway, there's my 20 cents worth, feel free to overlook or rip apart.

Cheers

I smell the smell of something smelly... I think it may be B/S.
First of all I would like to point out the incredible difference in spelling mistakes between the first post and the second post. If you truly were dyslexic you would have made far more spelling mistakes in the first post, so you made that up because people pointed out that you made a couple of spelling mistakes and the majority of mistakes were missed capital letters anyway.
People called you stupid, so now all of a sudden you are at Oxford studying to be a doctor... which means that you WILL save lives, so that makes you better than MCR.
Well, look at that, you've just proved EVERYONE wrong. You're not a moron at all, you're just a liar.
Well done.
Idiot.
MCR have never, ever promoted self harm or suicide.
The people that went to Marble Arch feel passionate about this subject. They aren't depressed or self harming, they are standing up for what they believe in.
And well done to them.
You have absolutely no right to say those people embarrassed themselves; you have embarrassed yourself far more.

I shall be going down the shop tomorrow and buy.... wait for it... THE DAILY MAIL.
All you preteen twats listen! You should go discover better more meaningful music instead fucking yourselfs over Gerrard. All he wants is your £ so he can buy hair straightners and some more hair dye. You can then all follow that trend you sad fucks.

Thank You and Goodbye.

I would like to say well done to everyone at Marble Arch on the 31st. i may not be a complete lover of MCR but i was on their side and all of the people that were protesting. how dare daily mail say such things about emo's they are not all like that.

Okay, first, stop fucking arguing on here, because it's more pathetic than those "Anon" dudes that tried to trash the protest.

Second, it's okay to have different opinions on the band. Noone is saying "YOU MUST LIKE MCR IF YOUR A TRUE ROCKER" thats bullshit. I myself am a HUGE fan of them, my bf isn't.

I was there, I made a sign, it was the best MCR gathering I have been to. I met so many cool people there. I hugged EVERYONE in those photos, and more, well, I hugged everyone.

First, you can NOT blame a band for what some girl did. If you actually LISTEN to what the band says, then you'll understand they are against that shit! That what this was about I mean, if MCR made fans kill themselves, why are we still alive? Why were we there and not laying on our bed with blood coming out our arms?

I tell you, there where these sad twats in masks who were holding up signs and shit and me and some other girls run out this guy who looked like a typical "EMO".

I think we showed The Daily Mail what the MyChem fans are made of. And I think if MCR were there, they would of been proud to see there fans standing up for what we beleive in.

Now these twats calling them "EMO" an "Suicide Cult", stop being stupid. Get a hobbie or something! Seriously, it's pathetic, childish behavour. And plus, GO AND FUCKING LOOK UP MY CHEMICAL ROMANCE'S MESSAGE BEFORE YOU TALK SHIT!

I think that MCR saved my life personally. Saved me from not being myself. And I reckon they can save others.

And I personally wanna thank Kerrang! for being there. I mean, you guys are great!

Much Love

Lol. Well, firstly, i'm confused as to which album the Daily Mail is on about! The Black Parade is their latest album and it was out in October 2006, so why would we be searching for publicity for it a year and a half later? Uh, we wouldn't. Haha.

Secondly, actually quite a few people read the article. Or else the whole thing wouldn't have taken place.

And thirdly, I was there, and I didn't dress like a "stereotypical emo" (unless ugg boots are "emo clothing" now...) My point is, you can't catogorize everyone.

Posted by Becki | June 2, 2008 8:32 PM | Reply to this

Haha, stfu. Nothing the Daily Mail wrote was fair. Everything was based on opinion (and a ridiculous one, at that). They had no reason to call MCR "an emo suicide cult band". We didn't do that stuff you said because MCR fans are not violent people. That's why the protest was always going to be a peaceful one. You can think what you want about us fans, but it won't change that we are an army in the way that we stick together and look out for eachother. I wouldn't expect you to know anything about the fanbase anyway, because you aren't part of it!

how can you call someone pathetic for going to a protest to stand up for what they believe? just cus some of you dont have the guts to do it, theres no point having at those who actually give a shit about all the crap that is written about people/bands they believe in. im not claiming that MCR 'saved my life' but i can deffinetly say they haven't made it any worse, and its good to have music that you can relate to. if your depressed you dont wana listen to all the chav shit and happy music, you want something that makes you feel like your not alone.

also, everyone has their own opinions so ACCEPT IT!

Posted by amy | June 2, 2008 8:45 PM | Reply to this

finally... a journalist/reporter type person we can agree with and trust... it's about time somebody saw what was actually going on that isnt a MCR fan or a fellow emo beause us emos... we only self harm because of depression... everyone gets depressed... anyone is capable of killing themselves if they need a total escape from life... however different people deal with depression in different ways... some self harm... some take it out on others... some seek help while others simply hide it away an hope it'll dissapear with time
the fucking chavs are bad enough without the fucking press on our asses ¬¬

I would definitely have gone if possible, being a big fan of MCR and wanting to stand up for them.

To all you people telling us how pathtic we are, and what a sad bunch of losers we are, don't you have BETTER things to do than attack people because of what they listen to and what they do? Seriously, free country. Instead of harrassing us, go stand up for something YOU believe in.

Haha, like you would.

yh hi, i just want to say that how could u people think MCR is a cult or whatever, all they have done is write songs, and these people DID NOT embarass themselves at marbel arch all they wanted to do was to stand up to the press and tell them that MCR are not a cult or tell people to go kill themselves, i listen to MCR all the time and I HAVE NOT wanted to kill myself, and come on the song dead, it's actually about a cancer patient thank you very much and they DO NOT want people to go kill themselves, those people who killed themselves were because it was their own choice and it had nothing to do with MCR. Yeah sure their music is sometimes a bit depressing but you can always have happy music you have to have a bit of depression in your life, everyone goes throught a bit of depression in their lives, what's wrong with that

You don't have to be so defensive and abusive. I was only giving an example. I mean some of Bullet For My Valentine's lyrics are pretty dark and emotional...and you can't really deny that. I'm just saying that you shouldn't blame bands like that on teenage suicide. And I never said they were 'emo' in any way at all. What the heck is 'emo' anyway?? I think labelling bands is a really scene kid thing to do. You're being very childish and insulting.

Firstly there are people at my school who are dyslexic and yet are in the highest sets for english so that doesn't excuse your bad language. Secondly seen as this protest was mostly about MCR, and from your writing it seems as if you don't like them, then why are you bothering to follow it. This protest was organized to stand up for MCR seeing as the Daily mail HAS been writing biased articles against MCR. And lastly in no way have the hundreds of fans that went to London on saturday, they went there to stand up for something they believe in and for that they deserve some respect.

a lot of people go through a stage in their life where they do feel depressed, and im going to admitt that i did. it was a long time ago, and there were times when all i wanted to do was kill myself because i felt that the world was a lot better off without me. but suicide isn't the way to solve your problems, its far better to get help from someone so you can overcome it and live a decent and happy life like everybody else. butt so many of you are saying people that commit suicide are cowards? how exactly? sometime people just get to that stage where they cant go on, its there choice so why judge them for it? also, MCR do not lead people to suicide and neither do any other bands, MCR aim to keep people away from this and urge them to get help so they become better. there music helped me, no it didnt save my life, but it helped a great deal so i think its right that all these people did this protest because no band should be blamed for a girl killing themself. that was intirely their own desision however tragic it was. everybody stop judging each other for the views on the band and judging those who went to the protest, its their life and people should be free to live it how they want.

I think the Daily Mail should do a nice detailed article on how the Mexican emo bashers are providing a public service.
Then follow it up with a picture of the mighty horde of 40, and demand action be taken against this plague of society.

Posted by Gorgar | June 2, 2008 9:29 PM | Reply to this

Right first off i'm 16 and an MCR fan, my english teacher is also a fan and HE is a thirty-odd year old. So that proves your stereotype wrong. Also by stereotyping the MCR fans than how are you any better than the people who murdered Sophie Lancaster? They beat her up because of her stereotype. This is the most annoying because we all listen to the same type of music ROCK. Although it is different types of rock. But people shouldn't be giving others shit because of the music they listen to.
Yes you are entitled to your own opinion of what you think is 'good' music, so are we. And we happen to think that MCR are good. And to say 'grow up' is offensive, for my age i am very mature unlike what i guess you are. If you don't like MCR then don't read a post about them. Now i have some advice for you GROW THE FUCK UP! =]

Posted by laura B | June 2, 2008 9:41 PM | Reply to this

You say that now, but wait until one of your favorite bands get attacked. It will be a totally different matter then wont it? You'll be the one that will be sticking up for them, or if not then do you really class your self as a fan? i see it as that they band are always trying to look after there fans best interests i.e. MCR, so the fans will turn round and stick up for the band when the media give them shit.
Now give me as much shit as ya want cause i couldn't give a fuck ;)

Posted by class 2k8 | June 2, 2008 9:48 PM | Reply to this

I was at the protest and it was an amazing day. There were loads of people there (about 200 or so at marble arch) and there was a really happy upbeat atmosphere which the band would have been proud of.

i'm a 16 year old fan of my chem. I've liked them for about two years, and i can honestly say that i've never had an urge to cut myself or commit suicide. If anything they made me happier than i was before and i have so much more confidence in myself than i did before too. Theyre so against the idea of self harm and suicide that they speak out against it at nearly all their shows. the last thing gerard said as he walked offstage at madison square garden was 'if we never play another show again, keep yourself alive'. hardly encouraging kids to kill themselves.
As for the people accusing the band of caring solely about money, that really is clutching at straws to find something wrong with them. When i met Gerard last november at a signing he saw how many people were there (about 1000) and he stayed way longer than he was supposed to so he could see as many of the people there as possible before he was told he had to leave. He was incredibly polite, and thanked everyone individually for being there, as he signed something for them.

I think it's very low, and a complete contradiction of the term, to call someone pathetic for actually bothering to stand up for what they believe in. The people calling fans pathetic and using sentences like 'emos go die u know u want to' disgust me. In using remarks like that they show themselves for the lazy, ignorant idiots they are.

The term 'emo'as it's used in conversation today is incredibly derogatory and misinformed. Music wouldn't be music if it didn't hold some kind of emotion. Thats the point of music....to make people feel an emotion or for the writer or composer to express their feelings in a creative way, whether they're happy or sad.

Depression makes kids kill themselves, not music.

I'm so proud of everyone who was there on Saturday.

Well, welll there again we have media explotation of a sad tragedy that gets turned into an international incicdent by sensationalism.Suicide in teenagers has been around since the dawn of time and it has nothing at all to do with music it is an emotional and chemical imbalance within ones brain which makes you feel depressed and suicidal, having to deal with the shit of everyday life.I have myself attempted suicide 3 times and at no time did i ever listen to MCR whilst contemplating the end of my life. There are a lot more artists and music out there that is depressing and makes you feel suicidal.I feel very sorry for the parents of hannah and what a tragic loss of such a young life.,but to blame that on musical influences is just plain stupid.Everybody needs a scapegoat to try and shift the blame or to understand why their kids would do that.If hannah had been say a westlife fan would they have been blamed?I think not!!!MCR are a great band who have a huge following, yes so not everyone likes them but thats their choice.I am a SLIPKNOT fan but i dont go around wearing masks and jumpsuits and scaring the living shit out of people as they do on stage.A lot of people i know hate SLIPKNOT and their music but like i said before thats their choice. As far as emo is concerned there has always been trends for different eras in the 80,s we had new romantics blokes who wore make up and eleborate clothing i think that emo is a lot like that now.Anyway all i want to say is i respect everyone who went to london and demonstarated against the daily mail and good on u all for standing up for what u believe in.At the end of the day LIVE AND LET LIVE thats my motto enjoy what u like and enjoy ok

I love My Chem to death but I am so bored with this whole war on emo. I mean why arn't we still talking about the fact that a goth was killed by chav's. I think that is far more important than this whole shit about My Chem being a cult. Yawn. I would also like to mention, in my opinion, My Chem arn't even emo. Emo has moved on now. Emo is YouMeAtSix, Kids in glass houses, Paramore, Kill Hannah and most of all Cute is what we aim for! Please just shut the hell up about My Chem and how they kill thier fans. So fucking boring!!! xXx

The christian religion is a far more dangerous cult than emo.
Emos don't go around reading from an emo bible in the street while you're trying to shop.
They also don't go screaming abuse and threats at you.
They don't say how you're going to hell if you aren't christian.
And a lot more stuff has been done in the name of christianity. You name it....
Murder
Torture
Incitement to riot
Persecution
Homophobia
Racism.

Also if there is a god he has the morals and maturity of a petulant two year old.

And yet it still gets taught to everyone in school. In fact everyone just asumes you are christian.

P.S I'm a 12 year old MCR fan.

As a strong fan of mcr i'd just like to explain what the song "DEAD" is and what the album is about.
"The Black Parde" album is a concept album, its a story of a character who does tragically die of cancer and that death is only the beginning of his new life. In which the character learns more about himself and others, it is not an album set out to disturb kids and motivate the so called "Emo" culture as to inflict self harm. I have been to mcr concerts, on my first ever trip Gerard Way spoke to the crowd that if they ever felt depressed that they need to talk to someone and seek help, mcr have always encouraged people to "Live". And kids ARE influenced by bands, luckily mcr are one of those bands who are very positive, just because the use dark metaphors does not make them set to influence self-harm.
Furthermore the song "DEAD" is about someone always be there for you regardless of death and again because it's a concept album the lyrics are playful and caberet. Im sorry that your veiw is so negative and that if you were to only read between the lines and be able to understand bands like mcr your view might be different. I have read the artical before you think i have not, mcr fans are not illiterate but good kids who stand up for what they believe in and that is My Chemical Romance.

im a mcr fan but its harder to like them now cause all the good decent fans are dicks there either stupid young girls who know nothing about the band other then a memeber" is fit". or really anoying emos who or stupid people who have no idea about mcr and follow them to from the BP which ruined them in my eyes i went to see them and some people didn't know the words to three cheers or bullets .

the next album better be like the ones

I'm glad that the MCRmy stood up for MCR. We've proved our point that MCR are not killing people-- not that it's not possible. If they can save lives, they can lose lives, but I highly DOUBT that any suicides yet have been caused by MCR.

Let's stop giving the Daily Mail more attention, yeah?

Posted by Leonore Paisley | June 3, 2008 1:40 AM | Reply to this

First off, let me say that I am a loyal fan and support of each member of My Chemical Romance as well as the band as a whole. I must say that I think The Daily Mail was being biased for blaming Hannah Bond's death on an emo cult.

Throughout the years, teenagers have resorted to many different things in order to either fit in or to try to be different. I believe that originally "emo" was a branch off from punk which was to be different and to not take anyone else's shit. The "emo" people are often labeled because they wear dark clothing, distance themselves from others, and even inflict self harm.

I have seen many comments saying that My Chemical Romance could never take lives, that they only save them, but it is my belief that everything in this world is relative. So, if there is a positive reaction to something, there can also be a negative reaction.

I've seen the lyric "I am not afraid to keep on living; I am not afraid to walk this world alone," from the song Famous Last Words by My Chemical Romance given as an example as to how this band inspires people to NOT commit suicide, but there are also lyrics that state "So I guess I'll blow my brains against the ceiling," and "Singing songs that make you want to slit your wrists." I know that these songs are not meant to influence people to commit suicide and that they were written during a time when the band (Gerard specifically) were going through a really hard time, but if someone did not know that, they could take it the wrong way. Obviously My Chem should not be held responsible for someone's misinterpretation of one of their songs. Therefor, blaming the death of Hannah Bond on an emo or suicide cult which MCR contributes to is absolutely wrong.

Wait a second here. The music these people (and myself) listens to is very meaninful to us. Just because its means nothing to you does not give you the right to run your mouth on this. You talk about Gerrard wanting the peoples £, but you've clearly just spent 5 mins of your life and 45p that you'll never get back on something that was pointless. So you go follow your trend (buying crappy news papers, exagerating the truth to get a storie for an expence that is more than "the sun" even though they are almost the same thing)

Posted by Lee | June 3, 2008 9:32 AM | Reply to this

Fair enough if these people felt the need to protest against this - what the Daily Mail are/were saying is complete bullshit, and I certainly wouldn't appreciate being typecast either.

But this is so much a get together as it is a protest. It just appears to be a load of MCR fans with signs sitting around doing nothing, doing more talking amongst themselves and posing for photos than actually protesting effectively.

Just seems like a pointless exercise in how to waste away your weekend. People are going to look back on this in years to come and think 'I can't believe I did that'. Its not even newsworthy - its taken until Tuesday, on this website of all places, for any sort of news story to crop up on it. Nothing on TV or anything.

Clearly if there's going to be any sort of protest in the future, some better organisational skills are needed, cos the numbers there are poor.

the article was poor...and it gives emo more meaning than its worth
its just a stupid fad for the lil teenies..mcr are alrgt..they dont promote suicide many people know that

but at the end of the day.. no one starts a band just to save lives..its not what they are all about..

and i dont think you can honestly say that mcr save thousands of lives..

if someone is pathetic enough to consider killing themselves for an issue that can be solved by listening to a few lyrics from a band that doesnt know they exist..then they could also be cured by possibly being slapped in the face..or counselling..either way..

how many mcr fans are out of school?

and LOL at the person earlier that said about you can't have an opinion because you're not in a world famous rock band..shit..i wonder what the world would be like if that was the case.

Another article? Seriously?

There are more important things in the world then this whole emo thing. What about the cyclone in Burma? Quake in China?

Those are the people that need our help! Not the "emos"! My Chemical Romance are perfectly capable of handling their own battles, they are grown men.

So long as you're happy, that's all that matters. If you believe MCR saved your life and that's what keeps you going each and everyday, that's awesome. Keep being happy. The band know they've made thousands of people happy, they hear it all the time. Don't strike back at everything that is said, because if everyone in the world did that, we'd be living in chaos.

Just believe what you believe and get on with life being happy.

Posted by Zoe | June 3, 2008 1:51 PM | Reply to this

I think that everyone has their own opinion of what the term 'emo' means and usually to suit themselves and what they want it to mean.

People with issues can either choose to give up or wallow in misery or choose to try and find strength and sort themselves out. If people believe that My Chemical Romance give them strength which many fans claim then that can only be a good thing. My Chemical Romance have been vocally anti-suicide therefore anyone who wants to give up with their life are not going to get any encouragement from My Chemical Romance to do so. The Daily Mail have completely ignored all of the anti-suicide statements that My Chemical Romance have made and should be shown up for it!

I was disgusted to read the Daily Mails version of Emo, the Daily Mail reporter has stereotyped every MCR fan.
Since the story came out about Hannah Bond, my parents have tried to stop me listening to MCR.
Why should i?
I have only ever self harmed once, during my Chav days, but never have i self harmed or attempted suicide as an emo since i started listening to MCR, my life has changed completely and just hearing their songs makes me smile, when i listen to their music I'm happy.
I've seen so many things they have said onstage about keeping yourself alive, they never have been and never will be and emo suicide cult band.

I wish I could have been at the Protest, so that i could show my support for the band who mean everything to me.
I know i'm not the only one who has had their life changed by this band.

Bloody nonense.
MCR save lives.

This is shit. Seriously, stereotypical emo: It's not a fashion statement it's a fucking deathwish...

But guess what?
WE AREN'T ALL STEREOTYPES

MCR SAVES LIVES, THEY TEACH US IF ANYTHING TO LIVE.

'I am not afraid to keep on living'

I mean come on there are bands like...the ones with the lyrics 'Cut my life into pieces, this is my last resort, suffocation, no breathing, don't give a fuck if i cut myself bleeding' or something...

I'm not saying they should be blamed either, but they are MUCH worse...Daily mail should get there facts straight.

Ps. I'm in one of those pictures =]

so if you're an emo..you self-harm and want to kill urself
if you're a hip hop fan you want to dance and groove
if you're a pop fan you're happy and cheery
the list goes on.....
to define how we feel and the things we do because of a type of music or style is stupid
saying emo's are victims to suicide is leaving many other people who are unsuspected by their choice of music but secretly want to crawl up and die to be vulnerable and one step closer to doing just that
we have all got to stop being so superficial. it's tragic about hannah bond. but emo is just a fashion and style of music. it doesn't truly make who we are. and we have got to get past that. or we won't truly see the people who are suffering because they are hiding behind their bright coloured clothing.
peace

right seeing as your oh-so-mature, have you ever stood up for something you believe in? i'm gonna take your answer as a no. So shut the fuck up. You have no right in slamming other people for standing up for something they believe in. So it wasn't moronic or a waste of a day. And to be quite frank seeing as i've started puberty and so in your eyes i am now in the 'real' world i am going to say this when you mature come join the actual real world.

Journalists have a moral obligation to post the truth and an unbiased account of reality. Why would anyone rise to what mickey mouse journos like Andrew Levey et al write in The Daily Mail? It has about as much credibility as a comic.

The intention of the protest was a good idea, but it won't change anything. The Daily Mail wont retract their badly informed, unresearched opinions any time soon.

Posted by Mack | June 3, 2008 6:49 PM | Reply to this

okay this is all that happened on the 31st

about 20-40 fourteen year old girls turned up to a traffic island to squeel mcr songs. there was no one to protest against, no one to listen.
there was no protest, just a disorganised group of prepubescents meeting up and singing songs

Posted by chris | June 3, 2008 6:57 PM | Reply to this

Okay yeah the press can say what they fucking want. But they CANNOT blame something on a band. Seriously. It's not their fault. They didn't ask for anything like this to happen. Those fans are simply prooving that. I bet if MCR could be there to say so they would have!!
And don't say they're pathetic. I'm pretty sure if a band yew loved was blamed for something yew'd be angry as fuck and protest like that.
I'm saying this because I have a freedom of opinion and I fucking luff this band!!

this is soo unfair on everyone to be honest, my chemical romance for one are not responsible for the girl killing herself, the papers blaming a band is pathetic!
i bet if they took a look at the lyrics of some other bands they would see the same kind of lyrics talking about death, just cause they talk about it doesnt meen that they are telling you to kill yourself. instead of looking for someone to blame why not just leave it. if this is a band she believed in thats all that mattered, you should respect that fucksakess.

All this reminds me of is when Marilyn Manson was blames for the Columbine school massacre. Stupid.

The messages of My Chemical Romance's songs are positive - "I am not afraid to keep on living" is just one example.
And to the jerk who said, and i quote ," has anyone read the MCR lyrics, i mean what sort of band has songs called DEAD?"
1)obviously, you havent. and
2) AHAHAHAH. ok, so you're probably one of those people who considers themselves too "metal" to like My Chemical Romance. Ahem - Iron Maiden: album "Dance of Death", album: "Killers", album: "No Prayer For The Dying", album: "A Matter of Life and Death".
Shall i continue, or do you wish to embarrass yourself some more?

If I'm 13, big deal! I'm a hell of a lot more mature sounding than you, and may I recommend that you invest in a spell checker. And maybe a book to assist you in your grammar skills.

I like My Chemical Romance. You quite possibly don't. Fair square yes? But that back to that comment about me being 13? Very clever of you. The thing that's really wrong with society today isn't it? Ignoring basically anyone under the age of 15. Ridiculous.

just coz u dont like mcr, it dont mean that you have to fucking have a go at what they do. they say at concerts NOT TO KILL YOURSELF OR SLIT UR WRISTS. THEY ASK U TO GET HELP.

n it's not just fans of mcr that kill themselves. its all the stereotyping and bullshit that all of us 'emos' get from people that lead us to depression, self harm and ending in suicide. so look in the fucking mirror if u wanna find someone to blame for Hannahs death. she wouldnt want mcr to be blamed.

The thing that pisses me of is that people with GENUINE depression who self-harm for REAL reasons get ignored. I HATE people who self-harm to be part of the emo and scence fads! Its pathetic GROW UP. Self-harm and suicide walk hand in hand - if you're going to self-harm don't parade around going "I'm so cool I self harm!".

I think that My Chemical Romance should sue the Daily Mail! They have every right to as they have clearly wrote parts of a story that isn't true. Over this bullshit MCR could have lost fans, mainly parents reading the articles and stopping their kids from buying their music. So they may have cost the band some fans and put a scratch on their career.
I can't believe that the daily mail had the nerve respond by saying basically that they did nothing wrong and they didn't put any quotes in of their own. Nobody told them to use the words "suicide cult" and quote lines from songs and twist them!

PS. Whoever "Amused" is, I'm guessing works for the daily mail... cause nobody could be that stupid.

I think that MCR should sue the daily mail and donate the money to the samaritans to make their point. Lets see the daily mail argue with that!

Posted by Amanda, Newcastle | June 4, 2008 1:05 PM | Reply to this

Do't be stupid. Sue them for what? They didn't say ''MCR killed that girl", they merely pointed out that MCR are an emo band. The Mail pretty much covered the emo genre with the objectivity and forthought of a sledgehammer, but they didn't actually libel anyone.

Oh, and FREEDOM OF SPEECH.

"im studying at oxford uni so please do not insult my inteligence, it is no doubt fer greater than yours" LMAO well aren't you the pompous ass? I very highly doubt that, my man.

You are welcome to enter into a war of words with me any day of the week, and dyslexia (with a y) has nothing to do with spelling, Dear Heart, it has to do with reading and letter reversal. How'd you do on your exams, Doc?

Oh and by the way, wouldn't such a condition also be hazardous in the instance of, oh I don't know, having to write out a prescription, let's say? Or making a diagnosis? Are you SURE you are likely to save lives? Or cost them?

Yeah, when you are not too busy alerting this board to your Mensa status, I'd be interested to hear you explain, with your superior intelligence, the existence of the "emo cult." I'm all ears, Doctor Man.

The MCR Fans have a right to protest this, and well done for doing so, we shouldn't let the press push us into a Corner like this 'Metal is for Satanists' etc, the thing about music is it's art and nothing more, playstation games such as GTA have more influence on Kids than this, when you're trapped in a room 24 hrs a day shooting guns and mowing people down in your car for fun how come that doesn't get instantly connected when it happens in the streets, because anyone human understands the difference between art and reality, the majority play GTA but the majority do not listen to MCR and that's where the confusion rises...blame the parents for everything!

Parents these days are just fedup with trying because it's done them no favours, blame the government, oh but they ran out of money...Blame England for becoming overpopulated with different Cultures..BLAME EVERYTHING!

"There are also lyrics that state 'So I guess I'll blow my brains against the ceiling,'

Headfirst for Halos is a spoof, and it's "I THINK I'll blow my brains" not "I GUESS."

"And 'Singing songs that make you want to slit your wrists.'"

Cemetery Drive is about being on the road and missing the passing of someone you love, and it's "Songs that make you slit your wrists" - the word want is not in there.

I guarantee you I will find you a connection, and you stand corrected - Manson's fans DID have his back both before and after Columbine, and how is that any more serious than poor little Sophie Lancaster being beaten to death by narrowminded people like yourself just for her style?

I sure hope YOU never have to deal with depression, Douglas - it would be TRAGIC to have you meet with such a resounding lack of sympathy as that which you display towards innocent children in here.

Finally, blaming any band (but especially this one) for anyone's death is blind ignorance and you should know that. Unless one of the bandmembers physically committed the murder, they are absolved of all responsibility.

I also hope for your sake that you never have a child who is different from the status quo in any way, shape or form - you would sure change your tune then, wouldn't you?

So if MCR weren't around, would Hannah Bond still be alive?

That's the point of the protest, you ignoramus. And what concern is it of yours what children choose to find solace in?

Ohhhhhh big mistake there, MickeeSixx (and yes, I am fully aware of whom your username is referencing.) Your post wasn't too bad until you went THERE. Not everyone in here is that ignorant, or young.

I was 12 years old in 1980. I am definitely a bona fide headbanger, and my late husband and I raised our 15 year old son to follow suit (I am now proud to say that he even knows more than I do.)

My son and I are living proof that it is possible to have on one iPod The Queers, Judas Priest, Poison, My Chemical Romance and Blink-182, and be well-versed on all five.

If you want to be in an "ARMY" go join the british troops fighting out in iraq, they are true heroes, not my chemical romance!
I think that its pretty sad that all the young girls believe this bunch of bullshit.
As reguards to the protest contact me when there are more than 20 squealing 13 year old brats and the protest actually means something.
Goodbye.

I dont know, the daily mail wasnt AS honest as it made out. But i dont get how kids took it to heart to protest about it ?

Some girl dies and as usual the media make a big deal about it.
If music effects you to do things then clearly you arent an individual or one of self mind.
I used to listen to my chemical romance and on occasions still do, though this whole 13 year olds bandwagon thing is sort of starting to show, kids at the show not knowing lyrics to anything but the top 40 hits and so on.

And lets all be honest, iv never read a issue of kerrang in the last 3 years that hasnt had emo printed in it somewhere.

Emo is stupid.
Emo is bullshit.
Emo is a fucking stereotype.

Self harm and suicide is serious.
My Chemical Romance are not emo.
They do NOT promote suicide.
Emo is Emotive hardcore.
Real Emo music is dead.
Examples of Emo bands are Minor Threat and Rites Of Spring.

Emo music cannot meant emotional because most in most music and lyrics, there is emotion put into their lyrics anyway, so if Emo was emotional, nearly everything we listen to would be "emo".

My Chemical are not your stereotypical emo band.

Fuck the daily mail.

I've liked My Chemical Romance since i was about eight, so I have been listening to them well near the beginning, and now I'm nearly fifteen, and even though i believe the Daily Mail wrote a load of shit about My Chemical Romance, some fans who became liking MCR since The Black Parade have given a bad name for MCR
I am not blaming MCR myself and they are definitely not emo, and this parade was a fantastic idea but I believe some fans should actually look at themselves and realise their dragging the band down a bit
Bullets was an amazing album, I just wish people let them carry on as the rock band they once were, not helping them be labelled to be emo
The days when My Chemical Romance were touring with Pencey Prep were the best in my opinion

You silly anonamous person, it is not sad to be protesting against that. I am a HUGE fan of mcr and i think it is right to protest aainst the press. AND THE PERSON WHO SAID EMOS GO DIE WE WILL NOT GO AND BLOODY DIE WE ARE GOING TO FIGHT FOR THE BAND THAT SAVES LIVES, MCR. OK????

Posted by Lauren | June 4, 2008 8:26 PM | Reply to this

My Chemical Romance does have the ability to save lives. One of the people that I love most in this world, their heros are My Chem, and without them I don't think she would be here right now. I used to be a person who hurt myself with shit self-esteem, but in Listening to this fantastic band, I am a more confident and pro-life person. I wouldn't say that My Chem saved my life, but I would say, and mean with every ounce of my being, that this band taught me how to live my life, and made me realize that I did have a purpose. They made me want to help people the same way that they have helped me, and I love and respect them dearly for that. I know who I am now because of My Chem, and that is the greatest gift that anyone has ever given to me.

If kids today acaully got up off their butts and did some exercise instead of moping around dressed in black playing computer games they would have a lot more happy endorphines in their brains. Kids today seem to take "I'm a little bit sad" as "DEPRESSED". My Chemical Romance are capitalising on that and making money out of the most tragic kind of teenager.

As a word of advice to all teenagers - you need to get a life thats NOT My Chemical Romance. Live for yourselves, not for some stupid band. They won't be around to "save" you forever.

Posted by Tangerine | June 4, 2008 9:38 PM | Reply to this

this has all gone way to far and is getting really pathetic.

some people like the band and believe in them and some people dont. deal with it.

if you hate 'emos' then thats just great, but i dont thin everyone really needs to hear that do they?

and as for all those people saying how they think people who are just feeling a bit down just say their depressed, your probably right, i know a lot of people like that but dont class all MCR fans as these kinda people. some people really are depressed, others just think it. but thats life, you get people like that but dont go on about it on here because its pointless and we're all starting to go completely off topic about what the point of this protest was.

it wasnt to say how people pretend to be depressed, cut themselves for attention, how shit they think the band is or how good. it was to make a point and stand up for what they believe is right. and thats what many MCR fans did.

the protest is over now, so move on. everybody is just making the whole situation worse.

i believe MCR dont promote suicide like a lot of you, and many of you showed your beliefs on saturday so now just get over what the papers said and stop dragging the whole thing out longer than it needs to be.

your comment. Notice what you are commenting on. This fanbase stuck up for their music in a way many others have failed to. Whereas all here are hiding behind their computer screens, everyone at that protest risked something and made an effort to make a difference.
They stood up, not only for themselves, but for every part of alternative culture, for all of us who have ever been singled out. You may not like the band. So what. How can you justify people standing up for what they believe in?
I do not believe that the national press should be supporting the kind of mentality and prejudice that causes alienation, beatings and murders.
So ultimately, who cares whether you like the band or not? People take comfort in music. Full stop. They don't need your permission to take solace in what works for them. Your opinions are your own, and you are certainly not going to change the minds of anyone at that protest.
Why not celebrate that fact that someone stood up against discrimination? Ladies on the forum; supporting this kind of mentality would never have got you the vote.
So many of you want to focus on the small picture, but think about this. Don't sit around waiting for someone to change the world, help those already trying! You think you've got more important issues to protest? Go right ahead! Those 'kids' (I'm 23 by the way) will be pushing your cause I'm sure. But don't knock other peoples achievements just because you are too scared to put yourself on the line.

Actually, me and my partner aren't teenagers, we do do like wearing black clothes, I like classic goth lacey clothes and corsets because I think it's a very pretty fashion and I couldn't imagine dressing any other way. We don't go around saying we're depressed, in fact we are very happy people and always try to teach our little one that life is fun based. We're MCR fans and we are fun based, we believe that MCR are fun based too and they also want their fans to be happy. Yeah, they have the odd sad song, but what band doesn't?

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/home/search.html?s=yandsearchPhrase=emo
You'll find it here, I just went to the daily mail site and typed "emo" in the search engine.

Posted by Amanda | June 5, 2008 10:54 AM | Reply to this

This is my theory;
There is a type of depresion that effects teenagers, which I had myself and didn't even realise what it was until it was over. I don't think that teenagers are educated enough in psychology. When this type of depression affects a teenager they become obsessed with whatever they're into at the time. I had this as a child, then twice as a teenager. First 2 times it was TV programmes, then it was a band. It does get so bad that you try to turn it into a religion, it is a psychological disorder caused by bullying, the really extreme obsession is there as a getaway and they often don't even realise it.
In this case, I believe that Hannah Bond (rip) had this disorder and she linked her obsession with MCR and even tried to turn the black parade into a religeon. If she was bullied (which people don't always tell parents or teachers if their self esteem is low), this could explain the self harming as well. I don't agree that MCR is to blame, if she did have this teenage depression, then it was totally unavoidable. Basically she was obsessed with MCR to the point where she believed that the black parade was in the afterlife, and the obsession was so strong that all she wanted to do was go to the black parade for real, and she genuinely believed that suicide would take her there.
Like I said, it's not something you can blame on the band, it's a disorder that could link to anything, for example; somebody could become so obsessed with westlife (one of society's "innocent" boybands) that they could jump off a cliff believing they can actually fly without wings!
When I had it with the TV programmes, I actually beleived that the characters were walking around with me. When I was obsessed with a band I beleived they were walking around with me too, I looked for things in their lyrics to turn into a religeon or relate to.
If self harm lyrics were the reason for this, which MCR doesn't have, then I would be covered with scars and possibally be dead around now because the band I was obsessed with was INME and I was obsessed with their album Overgrown Eden and the entire ablum is like one big suicide note! So beleive me, lyrics aren't the issue.
It's to do with depression, wanting to believe in something and obsession.

Before people pin this on MCR, I was over this whole thing by the time I'd even heard of them.

Posted by Amanda | June 5, 2008 11:31 AM | Reply to this

if you emo kids could read, you would see that it was hannah's mother who came forward, the daily mail just wrote the article. so, what you gonna do now, start bullshitting about this poor girls mother, who is simply tryng to warn people of the dangers of emo?

my condolences go to Hannah's family at this sad time

We're not doing this to bitch, we're simply trying to put the point accross that there are no "dangers of emo."

And the DM did put in their own comments, and it's them that we disagree with.

By the way, I'm not an emo, I just enjoy the music, I'm joining in tis debate because I feel strongly that music isn't to blame.
More often than not, it's bullying that causes it.

Posted by Amanda | June 5, 2008 12:30 PM | Reply to this

No they didn't, they basically refuse to take resposibility... that's why the debate is still going

You actually believe MCR is a cult?? Explain, we'd all love to hear it.

Posted by Amanda | June 5, 2008 2:09 PM | Reply to this

I get confused by the word Emo.
It has been associated with depression by people, but the emo music I've heard is really happy! I'm not an emo myself, I'm a goth, but I do enjoy emo music.
I recon that emo's may have been confused in the same way goths used to be until emo's showed up on the scene and chavs turned their attention to them instead.
I remember when chav retards used to walk past and shout "look it's a goff, go kill yaself" before they'd walk away laughing like bevis and butthead.
I think that when emo's came along, it was something new for the idiots to turn their attention to. Maybe some emo's are depressed, can't blame them when tracksuit wearing smackheads can't keep their retarded comments to themselves. They're the problem.

I don't think emo's are supposed to be depressed, I just think they're made to feel that way by chavs. Try listening to some music that's classed as modern emo, it's really happy music. Like Panic!at the disco and Fallout boy.

It's true, they're dumb asses who think that being bitched about by the media is clever! (WARNING! I am about to go on a long winded rant on a subject which I care about. Who needs anger management eh?) Anyyywayyyy, here goes!!

The girl (may she rest in peace) obviously did not know how the lead singer, and indeed founder of Mychem felt about 'emos'. He said, and I quote "I think emo is fucking garbage, it's bullshit." Proof : [link]

The lyrics are being accused of promoting suicide. This is not true. The accusers took a biased side on this and focused on the bad lyrics, and probably only the lyrics from the songs on The Black Parade. MCR have 3 albums in total. Their first album, I Brought You My Bullets, You Brought Me Your Love, is in majority, vampire based. One of the songs is called 'Vampires Will Never Hurt You' and in the song 'Early Sunsets Over Monroeville' the lyrics "Not knowing you'd change from just one bite" refers to vampires, most likely. Their second album, Three Cheers For Sweet Revenge, was written at the time of Gerard and Mikey Way's grandmother's death. She was called Helena, which is the name of the first song on the album. Helena died of cancer, which is the main theme of The Black Parade, as 'The patient' has cancer. It was also released when the reality of cancer was kicking in. So you see, Mychem is just a band wanting to please with their music, not one with the intention of having suicide cults set up because of their music. The lyrics of many of their songs, in my PERSONAL OPINION (I have to say that before people start picking fights with me over little things) are sweet. The song Heaven Help Us has a positive name, and in the song Cancer, the lyrics 'The hardest part of this is leaving you' show that death is negative.

The whole idea of music promoting suicide is ridiculous. If you like a band, like that girl (may she rest in peace) did, the music of said band would not depress you. It's simple logic! If you like the music, you enjoy listening to the music, if you enjoy listening to it, YOU'RE HAPPY!

My Chemical Romance did not set out with the idea of causing suicides, i doubt any band did. In an interview I saw, Gerard Way told us why he formed the band. Gerard Way painted before his music career, and he was on the pier when Twin Towers went down on 9/11. He decided he didn't want to be just another person who gets the train in the morning (or something along those lines) and decided to form the band. His younger brother, Mikey Way, who plays bass for Mychem learned to play the bass just for the band. Brotherly love eh? ^^

I think the parents of the poor girl (may she rest in peace) just want someone to blame in the midst of their grief.

There, my view on the whole thing. I was hpoing to get it published (don't ask why XD) but ah well.

Why is it that it's mainly girls in the photos? Probably a stupid question, but still, it's true.

I was hoping to get it published (don't ask why XD) but ah well.

Why is it that it's mainly girls in the photos? Probably a stupid question, but still, it's true.

Posted by The me. | June 5, 2008 5:59 PM | Reply to this

They did label them, in fact they called them a "suicide cult" band in the title of the article!
Quote from article itself; "the 'black parade' is a place where all emos believe they will go when they die"
ALL emo's?? That's a load of crap!

Is what annoyed most people here I think is that they made their own minds up in the article that emo is dangerous... there's nothing to back that up.

Since when do facts matter to the Suicide Cultists?

Posted by Gorgar | June 5, 2008 6:03 PM | Reply to this

EXACTLY! I couldn't have put it better myself! (I think it should get published).
I think it's disgusting that the media are tearing a song to bits and blaming it for a young person's death when it was in loving memory of the 2 band member's late grandmother. They must feel fucking terrible!
In a couple of years time the family may stop blaming the band, it is a normal reaction for when something like this first happens I agree. I was pointing blame all over the place when my brother hung himself. ...And getting pissed off with the media for blaming it on the family. Now my mind has settled down with it being 3 years ago I only point blame to one person, and that's the woman who was giving him drugs when he stayed at her's, but who in the right mind gives a 16 year old drugs?

You're wrong, Becky. If YOU could read, you would have observed that The Daily Mail has been after the "emo movement," and MCR in particular, since the latter half of 2006. The Mail is simply exploiting this tragedy to further their sick agenda.

While we're on the subject though, why don't you define for me what "emo" is in your mind, since you like to use the word as a weapon, and then tell me what the "dangers of emo" are? Is it the danger of being accidentally suspended from the barricade by one's studded belt? The danger of being poked in the eye by one's hair fringe?

Come on, Becky, you wanted to speak up. By the way, everyone's condolences go out to Hannah's family (even though she in fact passed 8 months ago, not recently - the Mail is slow) including the band's. No one here is being callous toward the Bonds, with the exception of the Mail, who is choosing to capitalize off of their suffering.

Posted by Deborah J. Draisin | June 5, 2008 6:19 PM | Reply to this

You are a callous asshole. Did you completely forget that the tragic death of a 13 year old girl sparked this debate? I hope you find yourself impaled by killer bees the next time you head out for beer, how does that feel?

Posted by Deborah J. Draisin | June 5, 2008 6:22 PM | Reply to this

Well said! In all honesty I have never noticed an MCR fan degrade anyone else based upon what bands they like! They seem quite happy to let everyone listen to whatever bands they want to listen to!

Posted by Isa | June 5, 2008 6:47 PM | Reply to this

right my view on this tragedy...

it was not just the medias fault

it was not the musics fault

it was mainly our fault as a strereotyping society.....

since the genre "emo" has hit mainstream narrow minded idiots who have no idea about symbolism in music etc have attached a stereotype of self harm, unhappiness and suicide. young, innocent, impressionable girls like poor hannah bond hear these twisted views on what is JUST MUSIC and get confused about the meaning of it..

how many people who are blaming the media, the music etc have actually made one of these potentially damaging stereotyped "emo" jokes?? my guess is quite a few...

so instead of protesting against the media to protect MCR why dont people start raising more awareness and support for young teenagrs that suffer from self harm depression etc, im sure Gerrard Way and Co can defend themsleves but parents, schools do need more help and advice on what is becoming almost an unavoidable trend for young teenagers introduced to alternative music..

First things first... sorry to hear bwt your bro, it must have been horrible. Second thing... Im not gonna say im not emo cause people can think what they want but yeah i used to self harm an people do it to take their mind off their pain they feel by causing more pain. Ok so im 14 an people are probably thinking what a stupid cow or what ever but truth is i dont care any more an its people that cant keep there retarded comments to themselves that make people act like this. The media need to look further into peoples lives that do self harm and stop blaming the music cause its not the music that causes people to self harm its what goes on in their life like chavs shouting emo as they walk down the street. What the media have done is wrong. And i think you should get your comment published cause it would make a hell of a lot of difference to how people see 'Emo's'. Personally i'm sick having emo shouted at me everytime i walk down a street in a Greenday Hoody and in drain pipes an a pair of vans! People need to think about what they say beofre they say it because it may be a life they end next time!

Perfect example! This is proof that chavs are to blame for depression, self harm and suicide! Because they enjoy making people miserable to look good! They don't care about anyone and in my opinion they are all evil and shouldn't be allowed out in public! They're in no position to put anyone down, they're morons that like to fight and scrounge off the government because they're a waste of space and the female chavs (the sluts) will all try to get up the duff as soon as they leave school so they don't have to work and they get free money for their alcohol problems! Low life fuckers!

Chavs are evil and should all be dead!
They could've driven many people to their deaths and may not have even realised it! ...I hope they do realise and I hope the guilt drives them to the same fate one day.

I was at the protest with a few friends and I was mainly there for MCR and Hannah (I knew her for 6 years) and I am shocked that the Daily Mail haven't retracted their statement. MCR know about Hannah and they've said themselves FUCK THE DAILY MAIL! So why don't they do the right thing, and leave Hannah, MCR and Emos alone? The world just wants someone to hate, so they pick on MCR. Ridiculous.

MCR SAVED MY LIFE - THTS THT

Posted by XXllROCKPRINCESSllXX | June 6, 2008 10:52 AM | Reply to this

Leave MCR alone, they saved my life!

They help me through when it all just seems too much. Like when i can't get my hair to do 'that flicky thing' or when 'my mum sends me to my room' or when i have too much bilogy homework to do!

Being a teenagers is so hard, no-one understands, no-one knows how i feel. Although i come from a good middle-class family and am without any depts, responsabilitys, health issues, commitments or been through any tragic events, but my life is soo unfair, sometimes i just want to end it all. Like that one time, when i saw my dads razor, and i was sooo gonna do it!

But i listen to geralds beautiful not whiney voice and he takes me to a better place. A place where i have no homework, no nagging parents and my hair looks amazing!

ps; I you havent noticed yet, im mcking you freaks, i kno people who have cut attempted suicide, i knew some who succeeded. People with real problems. Problem most of you dont and will never have. So your sad sometimes, your a teenager, it happens, we have ALL been there, soon you'll grow up, then you will have to deal with real problems.

Until then, GROW UP!

Posted by Max Fightmaster | June 6, 2008 11:11 AM | Reply to this

Have you got nothing better to do than mock kids? You're not really in a position to tell them to grow up if this is how you spend your time. I mean that post you just wrote, yeah that's real mature. Some of them might really be on the edge for all you know, emo's do get bullied ALOT. And people like you make kids feel bad about themselves with comments like you've just made. You don't know a single one of them, you shouldn't push people who claim they have depression, you never know. You could be responsible for the next one.

Posted by Amanda | June 6, 2008 12:24 PM | Reply to this

Ooooh can I be responsible for one please? Bloody 12 years olds telling us how hard their middle class lives are cause they cant get their hair to flick. Utterly pathertic. You should go and do a bit of charity work, you might find it will remind you of how lucky you are in reality.

Remember reality do you? It was before you started worshiping some bloke because he sounds a bit whiny, tells you his life is hard and then stashes a personal fortune in excess of $20,000,000 he made out of you suckers.

Posted by Matt | June 6, 2008 2:19 PM | Reply to this

Ooops did I say $20,000,000? I do appologise, it will be more like $10.000.000 after his impending divorce settlement. Couldn't happen to a nicer guy.

Posted by Matt | June 6, 2008 2:43 PM | Reply to this

They're just kids, and what harm have they ever done to you for you to go off the rails with them like this? If they're acting depressed, that's their business... if they are really depressed, it's because of people like you making them feel that way. It wouldn't hurt you to lay off them. You're practically bullying children, what's the matter with you?

Posted by Amanda | June 6, 2008 3:09 PM | Reply to this

first of all i totally agree with the comment above ^^

secondly to all the haters of MCR, your replication to them being blamed for Hannah Bonds suicide is : who cares they r crap, they suck, they are emos, and what ever the fuck els.

but look at it this way what if it was your favorite band this were to happen to?

would you like it?......i don't think so!

would you be furious?.....of course you would!

would you stand up for what you believe in? ......if you were any kind of fan you would do anything to make sure the band you love weren't being characterized as some thing they obviously are not!

so yeah we My Chemical Romance fans have done just that! proving that this band means so much to us and we weren't going to let the tabloids write a cock-and-bull-story about them and misrepresent who they are! The story has misinformed people of what they stand for and mislead them to believe they are this scary "Emo/Suicide Cult" What gives them the right to compose such canard!

Everyone has their opinion and i respect that. BUT the negativity you haters use towards another band and their fans is sick! i may be 14 but you are the ones who are immature about the whole situation!

Just because some one likes a different style of music you have the nerve and the presumptuousness to judge them on it! i might like My Chemical Romance but that doesn't mean i don't like metal!

so yeah just think about that!

Posted by XxTiffanyxxMCRXxSavesxXLivesxX | June 6, 2008 3:30 PM | Reply to this

I have every right to express my mild annoyance at middle class children complaining about their lives when there are millions in the world suffering violent death and privations beyond their protected minds imagining. Perhaps someone who has suffered a great deal of hardship as a child might take offence to such whining and navel gazing - ie me

So you see I do have every right to consider this behaviour self absorbed and pointless.

Nice touch trying to use the "bullying" angle by the way. Best wishes

Its always the rock and metal scene that gets picked on by the media Judas Priest, Motley Crue, Ozzy its not just MCR or the emo scene, ive been a metal head since before some of you were probably even born, and have seen all the media hype against all sorts of shit !!!

in a couple of weeks the media will have something else to moan and bitch about, that all that those leeches do look for scapegoats to blame anything on and scensationlizing an unfortunate incident. in every decade theirs a band or two who get singled out by the media and villified in the 70s it was the Pistols the 80s was Ozzy and motley Crus the 90s was Maryln Manson etc.. christ even Led Zep got it .

Just get over it !!!!1

Gerard Way in this quote, is responding to a question about whether he likes 'Emo' music; not 'Emo' as a lifestyle. He has clarified that in later interviews.

The 'protest' actually had a double purpose; one, to stand up for MCR, and two, to show people how the 'Emo subculture' really is.

Essentially, Emo stands for over-emotional; not melodramatic, as many people think. The 'free hugs' signs being worn by people dressed as stereotypical 'Emos' were an attempt to point that out, but it seems to have gone over peoples heads.

Posted by lunar_scythe | June 7, 2008 12:34 AM | Reply to this

I personally just think the daily mail and everyone else should just leave the whole freaking emo thing alone now - its hardly breaking news, is it? And its not making things better by keeping going on about it.

I'm a fan of MCR and I'm getting sick of this now, cos everyone i know has now heard of this whole thing and more people than usual are now calling me emo. joy.

The sooner this whole thing is over with, the better. Then the Daily Mail can go back to doing what they do best - writing the sort of newspaper that my nan, grandad and teachers read. The so called ''emos'' can live in peace again, and the ''emo'' haters can live without seeing this in kerrang magazine every week. Everyones a winner.

Posted by Rachel | June 7, 2008 2:32 AM | Reply to this

Look okay, alot of you don't seem to understand or want to try to understand why we done this. I was there at the protest and I absolutley loved it. Not only was I standing up for the greatest passion in my life, the atmosphere was incredible! And besides I got to sing at the top of my lungs in a public area without being the only one getting stares for once! Anyway MCR means alot to us. Their music is therapy and I can say with total honesty that they saved my life. No question about it. I'm not saying that I'm a totally normal kid with a proper simple and straighforward mind. Far from it in fact. But you see if it wasn't for this band I would be in alot worse place than I am now. And that is why this protest was worth something and wasn't pointless. They give us hope and dignity and a reason for life. And we were giving something back. Our grattitude and proof that the reputation they have as being "a self-ahrm promoting emo band" was crap and in faact they are to some people, myself included, superheroes and icons!

Posted by Elaine | June 7, 2008 7:09 PM | Reply to this

we understand why you did it, what we are saying is that shit like this happens everywhere in everydecade of rock music all over the world and has that made any fuckin diffrence the answer is no Rock music keeps on growing and fighting back so just enjoy it. the music will last forever media interest doesnt. look how big the elvis became or the beatles back in the 60s and 50s they were both blammed by the media for lots of shit, motley crue were branded as satanits for the shout at the devil album, which had nothing to do with devil worshiping,

So Grow up get on with you life the music is here to say, one media paper will not change the views of the entire world !!!!!!

It actually crap like that that would want to make me kill myslef more than anything else in the world. How depressing! Grow up get a life and shove some compassion and understanding in your heart! If we didnt do this then "this shit like this happens everywhere in everydecade of rock music all over the world " as you quote would be happening alot more if we didnt do anything about it!

well to the person called ‘Amused’ you have a good point’s but I am writing an article on this for a school project, and I’ve READ it a few time over and over and i’am not illiterate, so instead of just being rude try and see both sides of the story i have; you have made yourself sound rude by not seeing both sides of the story all the fans of ‘My Chemical Romance’ have taken their time to support there band, and not let there band take the blame for something they didn’t do. Hannah Bond decide to take her life by talking to people over the internet about how to kill themselves, that is NOTHING TO DO WITH MCR! It was her choice know one else’s. She is the one who has wasted that precious life that no one can bring back.

May I point out how many MCR fans are still alive?? and happy =] and not suicidal!! I am NOT afraid to keep on LIVING! Emo's dont all cut themselves and have suicidal thoughts. MCR in an interview rejected the term emo when describing themselves. Gerard has said "emo is "a pile of shit." This gives me the impression he doesnt like being associated with the emo genre of music, maybe because maybe emo bands so sing about suicides ect . He is a positive person in himself "Like, you should never want to hurt yourself. You should love yourself". He knows that when you look up to a role model like himself, you will listen to him and take that thought or comment he said on board. MCR are like the saints in black. Long LIVE My Chemical Romance x

I just read most of the comments above and i dont think i've laughed like that in ages, i mean lets be honest, both mcr and the daily mail are a joke. MCR just appeal to 'emos' who just seek attention and whine on about 'oh how so bad their life is' and to anyone who replies to this, MCR did not save your life and they dont save lives. And why dont you 'emos' start listening to real emocore?
and the daily mail are a bunch of desperate bastards with nothing better to do than slag off amy winehouse and Pete Doherty. People with real talent who have their own problems which cant be sorted with some slut with a camera following them around all day and twisting some pathetic story.

Seriously, you clearly have no idea what you're talking about. People don't cut themselves because of the music they listen to. If you don't like a band then don't listen to it. It's really very simple.

For a generation who preach equality, we sure are an ignorant bunch of hypocrites. Our parents, teachers and heroes have taught us the values on anti-sexism, anti-homophobia and anti-racism. We are free to choose our own religion, follow any career path and have never felt the effects of a world war first hand. A storybook perfect society hiding its one major flaw: subculture discrimination.

Rave/disco kids, always high on drugs. Jocks are too dumb to string a sentence together. A bandanna under a cap says you are definitely gang-affiliated. But the most unfortunate ones who we all love to hate are the emos.

What is “emo” anyway? In the early 90’s an emo was geeky looking and listened to songs about being unable to find a girlfriend, while studying for A-level calculus. Nowadays, emo has many meanings: a goth, a scene kid, a music genre reminiscent of pop-punk, and a depressive mental state. But it’s most frequently used as an insult.

“Emo”, in itself, has no meaning. It is used a vague label attached to a variety of things which a large portion of the population have difficulty identifying with. Caveman instinct dictates that what you do not understand, you must fear. The fear becomes anger, which is then turned on the “emos”, ostracising them from society, condemning them to involuntary loneliness. The more lyrically inclined of these outcasts take their feelings of alienation and enforced isolation and turn them into profoundly emotional lyrics. The resulting songs are often misinterpreted as obsession rather the obeisance, further darkening the misconceived concept of emo.

Yes, we may be flawed by our bigoted views, but the media is also to blame. Worldwide, various radio stations, TV channels and newspapers have encouraged hate against subcultures, specifically against the emos.

A DJ in Mexico denounced emo live on air, labelling it “f*cking bullsh*t” which prompted a savage rampage through the town. Any emo in proximity of the mob was assaulted. In Britain, goth Sophie Lancaster was beaten to death - for being a goth. TV channels in the states have broadcast documentaries on the supposed dangers of emo and how parents can ascertain if their child has fallen into this alleged “death cult”.

Most recently, London based newspaper, The Daily Mail, has printed a series of unfounded and irrational articles stating that the band My Chemical Romance caused the suicide of 13-year-old girl, Hannah Bond. Hannah had reportedly been a fan of the New Jersey punk band for only two weeks when she hung herself after an argument with her parents. For a band who has always cared so openly about their fans’ safety, who had penned the unforgettable lyric “I am not afraid to keep on living”, it is impossible to see how they could have made this girl want to take her life, let alone be targeted as the sole culprit. I’m sure if she’d been a devoted Justin Timberlake fan, JT wouldn’t have been thrown in the red spotlight.

Two years earlier, disgraced journalist Sarah Sands (of the aforementioned publishing organisation) wrote an article branding emo as a “dangerous death cult” and used bands such as My Chemical Romance, Fall Out Boy and GreenDay as examples of the emo look and musical style. A scapegoat was needed in the wake of Hannah’s death and Sands’ article provided the perfect foundations to build upon. Seeds of mistrust against My Chemical Romance had already been sewn in the readers’ minds and now the Sands imitators are exploiting this to gain attention and further their war on emo.

There is a name given to incorrect and biased information printed in the media in order to solidify one specific view: propaganda. The Daily Mail is determined to turn you against emo. It’s morally irresponsible journalism. How corrupt must you be to use your position of power to influence and mobilise society against a group of insecure teenagers?

The Jews, the blacks, the poor; there’s always someone more to be victimised. And now it’s the emos’ turn to face an attempted subculture genocide.

Will you let this discrimination continue?

Or will you stand up for your fellow youths, regardless of their black regalia?

The constant attacks on emo are a new breed of hate crime and it must end now.

Well i think the daily mail are RIDICULOUS, if Mcr where the reason for all these suides well really all their fans would be dead wouldn't they? Mcr are like a line of hope for people its just like fans of other bands and whatever taste you follow i suppose you have that band that you listen to that gives you that hope or lightens up your day when you listen to them, some people need that hopeful feeling to get through the day, we have to face that the world aint exactl the easiest place to live is it? with the war, discrimination and all other things no matter how minor. So really i think that the daily mail needs to back off and start rporting about other things and to stop pointing the finger at innocent bands who are generally just trying to share their music. Now im going to stop ranting lolz, i just get so worked up with people using stereotypes as ammo in a argument!

You know it isn't only emos that do this, there can be suicides in pop/rap and etc.

JUST FOR THE RECORD
MCR do save peoples lives, maybe not YOURS but YOU are not the ONLY person IN THE WHOLE FUCKING WORLD.

Also, Pete Doherty DOES have talent, but that doesnt mean MCR dont.
AND.
what the fuck does EMOCORE mean.
EMO is a SHORTENED version of EMOCORE.
Proves you dont know fucking everything.
Your so bloody annoying sometimes.

"Nice touch trying to use the 'bullying'angle by the way."

She's right - that is what you are doing. Does this make you feel better about yourself? Let me tell you something, Hon - I personally know quite a few of these kids and their problems ARE "real" (i.e. falling within the quite-serious-enough-for-me-to- deem-cause-for-concern category.)

You like to toss around statements like "I have every right to express my mild annoyance at middle class children complaining about their lives" as if that supercedes any common sense that you are supposed to possess.

You can't possibly lump that many people into one box like that - you know NOTHING of what you speak, and you ARE a bully. No one asked you what you think, and that you deem the ability to cowardly put down children behind the safety of a computer screen a "right" just demonstrates what a low human being you really are.

As I do for everyone else on here that thinks like you, I sure do hope to God that none of you ever encounter depression or loneliness in YOUR lifetimes - obviously your high and mighty stature would more than carry you all by itself through THAT, eh? I also hope to God that none of you have children, because if you do, someone needs to rescue them from you.

A toilet mouth? Coming from you, that's rich.

You happen to be the complete fuckwit comparing what a few whiny brats bring upon themselves to what the Jews/blacks endured.

Last time I checked we didn't have emo kids crammed on rickety boats on their way to pick cotton for an entire life of servitude, or in camps waiting for a Zyklon-B shower.

What next? Will you suggest that Emos qualify as a seperate ethnic grouping from the rest of us?

Fucking hell, any wonder people pick on people like you? You're your own worst enemy.

i'm sorry if i get this wrong but MCR lovers are the pathetic ones? we stand up for what we believe in and we believe in MCR. and for other people's information this is not the first time the daily mail has blames MCR for something that has happened, it seems that when the so called "emo cult" (which we are not) is mentioned MCR come up as the bad guys and they are not the bad guys they are really caring people. Newspapers have disgraced anyone who listens to rock and metal by calling them emo..... do you know what i get when i go out.... all i hear is "dirty emo" "go cut your wrists" etc. i am not an emo and i do not cut my wrists but because i like to wear black and listen to rock and metal i get all this abuse...... and the people who started this is the newspapers because people read newspapers then they sterotype anyone who is like the person described. i find the newspapers pathetic.... they don't know what to write so they pick on music..... music is our lives.... no matter how much you try to shame our favourite bands you will never take the music away from us NEVER.
and the lyrics if you listened to them show you that it's okay to be sad once in a while and it's okay to keep on living.
for example= "I AM NOT AFRAID TO KEEP ON LIVING!" that one has a huge impact on people. these guys care about their fans thats why they write lyrics like the one shown above!

i love mcr and its raw emos like the ppl protesting that give them the bad press its like you all look about 12 so basically when thir first album came out they would have been well young. it doesnt add up tbh all the so called "fans" only like them because of the black parade a lot of ppl wouldnt even know anything about them if it wasnt for that record.
and whats with the free hug sign?
eurghh emos xxxxxxxxxx

Atleast they went out and did something because they're passionate about it, unlike you dicks who just sit at home complaining because no-one likes your favorite newspaper anymore.

Anyone who reads the daily mail/the sun must be completely retarded anyway because EVERYONE knows those newspapers are just lies and hyperbole!

And whats with the whole 'emo' insult.
Its a three letter word that the 12 year olds in my school use to try and offend people.
surely your abit grown up for that?

I'm so pissed off by the daily mail blaiming mcr for there music. What gives them the right to say things like that to mcr.

In my views its not mcrs falut I think that the daily mail has got nothin else to do but stir shit up. I'm emo myself but I don't belive all that crap I love listing to there music, and I could wished to be there will the others protesting with them. being emo I have gone through bad times at school as bullies kicked me and called me a sucied emo. But when I listen to mcr it makes me happy and stronger, just because your dosen't mean that you slit your rists its about being happy of dressing up as yourself and listing to music. From what I have seen of the protest is people making friends and standing up to here rights. So all I can say is well done I give 10% support and keep on rockin.

I hate the daily mail trying to give a bad image to emo's. MCR started for a reason. To help others and to give them hope. Because, lets face it, this world is a pretty ugly place. I wouldn't consider myself as "Emo". But someone who listens to good music and finds truth within the goddamn lies.

And, lets define "Emo". It's emotional, meaning people find some way of expressing emotion. Not "Because i'm emo I have to slit my wrists". That is a STEREOTYPE! and the newspapers are going on that alone.

Depression is a SERIOUS issue and not to be messed about with. Everyone is up in arms (Including me) about this. But has ANYONE ever considered the girl? God knows what happened to make her kill herself, and, for the newspapers to BLAME MCR for this is disgusting.

So, i'm backing MCR all the way, and I always will.

And

Justice Will Prevail.

MCR would do nothing to encourage suicide or self harming. They are completely against it. EMO is just an excuse for the papers to have a go at teenagers. They are always looking fro reasons to blame us for everything and getting bands like MCR drawn into it too. MCR are an amazing band who have their fans best interests at heart. They care for their fans that is why they try to put the message across NOT to self harm or think of suicide, in their songs. Whenever I feel down or am depressed I listen to bands like MCR because tehy give me the message that there is so much to live for and that I should not be afraid of what life throws at me. I should just carry on a1nd be happy. Thanks to them I enjoy life as much as I can and if the papers want to blame them then they clearly know nothing about reality they stick with stereotypes. I love MCR and I hope they have not been made tp feel upset by all this.

yea same here I hate to see pressure put to the band and I know they are not like that. which I give 100% support. but the daily mail should think about knife and gun crimes that are happening. so mcr isn to blame. I think that the daily mail should think carefully what they say as some fans will be angry.

I Agree With The Protests, This Hannah Was Depressed, And It's Not Only My Chemical Romance's Fault, There Is Surely Other Factors And Reasons Behind Her Death.

I'm One Of Those People Who Believe That My Chemical Romance Did Save My Life, And Anybody Who Things That The Band Promote Death I Won't To Say To You That You're Not Right, Really Though, If You Think About It What Exactly Are You Going To Stop?

If You Don't Like My Chemical Romance, That's Fine, I Do But I Don't Like People Classing Me As "Emo" Because I Do, Labelling Is Wrong When A Certain Group Could Be Classed As "Depressed" Or "Suicidal".

Haters Of The Band And This Type Of Music Leave Them Alone, Seriously Though, Why Are You On This Page In The First Page?

I Love The Band And There Music.

It's funny how some people make such a big fuss about MCR having a song called "dead." Bands that have been given a label such as emo, goth or metal can't ever mention dying without people saying they are "morbid" or "glamorise suicide." Loads of artists of other genres sing about death but nobody seems to notice (e.g. there are many love songs with lyrics like "i'd die for you," yet nobody ever says they romanticise suicide) - it's a double standard and it shows that people don't listen to lyrics as much as they claim to.

Like i have been to 6 MCR concerts, and at every one of them concerts they have never said "go kill yerself!" they always say stuff that makes you smile and stuff... so i dont think she killed herself over MCR, thats just pathetic that people think that she did. And i think its an insult to her memory. Y'no people dont like being called emos. And yeah, "emos" are happy with this music, its people who say that they are all depressed and cut their wrists and stuff, but i actualy know a chav that has cut her wrists loads of times... i just think they are twisting storys.

you know what, it's whinging kids like you EMU's out there give the media something to whinge about, fair enough youve got a gripe with whats happend and thats fine everyone's entitled to an opinion, but to stage a huge protest over it is just giving the media more ammo, nobody protested when Manson was blambed for the Columbine shootings, and did he loose any fans no have MCR lost ny fans NO. all the media have probably done is accidently sold more MCR albums.

Posted by SI | June 18, 2008 9:11 PM | Reply to this

Seriously, don't these kids have anything better to do with their life? Maybe the Daily mail is right- maybe music culture has gone too far in some ways. but MCR is NOT an emo Cult.... a Cult, sociologically is a positive thing (according to anthropologist, Walis, on the subject, Cults are WORLD AFFIRMING). The daily mail should get it's terminology correct. If anything MCR is a Sect. But who gives a shite? The Daily mail is facist, MCR is mundane, and Emo culture is childish. That's all there is to it.

i wonder what the boys think of this...their fans so quick to stand behind them :) even if the fans were misinformed they felt that the band was being threatened by someone whether their protest was aimed in the right place isn't what i'd like to point out. I think that the people in this band Frank, Mikey, Ray, Gerard, and Bob will all be extremely proud of the non-violent protests that went on. They must feel really accomplished to have given these fans something to hang on to and love so dearly they would take their time and put their effort into defending not only the band but the morals of the people who make up My Chemical Romance.

Wow. Sometimes I forget how pathetic people can really be. How can you blame a band, for something a 13 year old kid did? Did Gerard Way walk up and say: "Gee, why don't you go commit suicide?" I think not.
And I completely agree with you Deb, and this person's later post where they claim to be a doctor made me laugh out loud.
Out of everything the newpaper said, this upset me the most: "Emos like to wear studded belts, long black fringes over one eye, and cut their wrists as part of the emo initiation rite?"
Hardly. Where do they get thier information? I listen to MCR, and several other "emo" bands. You know what? I've even had a hardcore Marilyn Manson faze. But I have NEVER worn a studded belt. Sure, I have side bangs & dark hair, but plenty of people do. My hair is naturally dark, and the side bangs are worn by 75% of the teenaged female population. Not just "dark-haired emo kids." Look at all the BLONDES sporting them. Geeze.
And another thing. I have enver cut myself, or harmed myself in any way. I would never even dream of doing that. Imagine the pain it would cost my family and friends if I were to die, not only by accident, but because I CHOSE too?
If you're going to blame someone besides Hannah for her suicide, come up with something better than the music she listened too. I'll bet that's not all she listened to. She probably knew the words to at least one Hannah Montana song. Are you going to blame her, too?

The media has really caught onto the emo scene recently and sadly the most dangerous thing about emo these days is the press coverage.

Judging by recent articles, the Daily Mail hasn’t learnt much at all since the ignorant article in 2006 by Sarah Sands.

Parents who previously knew nothing about the culture are getting a false impression and becoming unnecessarily worried. As a result their children may be encouraged to miss out on a perfectly harmless and interesting scene.

We are a non-violet community. The critics take the music far more seriously than the fans. Young people enjoy the angst that is associated with the emo scene. Some people take it too far, but that is true of any sub culture.

I have setup my own online Emo community - www.soEmo.co.uk
This is a friendly and supportive community and also reliably describes the emo culture by people who are part of it!

It's stupid that the media think the 'emo scene' is dangerous!

Posted by Dave | July 1, 2008 1:33 AM | Reply to this

My Chem saved my life because their lyrics make me feel normal and able to fit into the community because of the way i dress and act. Most emo's dont actually self harm and if they do, the media should be doing all they can to help them, and not slate the band that they can relate to. I notice that the newspapers arent reporting things about thugs smashing up property and assulting people, and are instead chosing to pick on MCR because they are supposeddly a "cult". Most likely they havent ever heard a MCR song in their life and have no idea what the lyrics are and what they mean, and are just jumping on the "slate MCR" bandwagon the media have created because they have nothing else to do in their SAD PATHETIC LIVES.

Posted by Katie | July 4, 2008 2:21 PM | Reply to this

Hearing the things that the daily mail said about MCR, and blaming them for something that someone else did, made me furious. MCR made me feel more confident about myself, they made me feel home. They bash on MCR, but they dont bash on the more important things like murdurers or pedofiles that are out there that are acutally harming ppl, but they go off on a band thats against all that?!?! Ridiculous. Ppl who hate MCRm are ppl who NEVER heard their music, never heard who they really are, or even lisened to what they had to say about how their against all the violence and suicides. And that protest showed them how much we LOVE MCR. We stood up for them in a protest. Even if ppl weren't there, they still protested in their hearts bc they are standing up for a band that helps people who have problems, and they do help. They helped me from all the negativity I almost was drawn into, and they saved me b4 it was too late. Ppl think MCR sings about this stuff, well theyre telling a story thru music. But the daily mail or other newspapers dont pay attention to the people who want others to be violent or depressed, they go off on My Chem bc of their looks and their music, and they dont notice that they are against all this. And u ppl who hate MCR, why do you bother coming onto this article when you can read something you ppl like. Leave My Chem alone! Their music has meaning about life, and some of u dont get it. Besides, theyre blaming Hannah's suicide on a band that didnt do anything, it was HER choice. And when they heard about her suicide, they take it very personal, they hate to see ppl like her make these choices. MCR are here to help those in need. nuff' said.

I'm going to give a personal opinion here, I kind of like MCR but I would not call myself a fan. I feel inclined to agree. I read the report. Her parents knew she was self harming and should have got her help. Shifting the blame to music isn't going to help them.

I am a MCR fan and so are most of my mates. I get bullied every single day at school and have been since the age of 8 but have only been "emo" for 1 year. everyday after the daily "bullying" session at school i just pop my ipod on and listen to all my mcr songs, as it stops me doing something stupid. And it isn't MCR or the so-called "suicide cult" that commits suicide at all. People do it because of life problems such as debt or partners cheating on them. So daily mail, just get your facts right and stop labelling people. MCR RULES.

Yes! You tackled that beautifully! Honestly, there's nothing left to say here. I understand I'm a tad late responding to this (hehehe), but once I read your post I had to commend it. Great work!!!

I totally wish I'd known about this!! But I've only been an MCR fan for 2 months... People call me emo all the time because I listen to MCR and Green Day! But their music actually cheers me up when I'm down, not the other way round!

I know this is really old, but I was at this protest, and it was not pathetic at all. We didn't go so the Daily Mail would take back what they said, or make them change their views, we went to make a statement. The suicide of the girl was hardly mentioned, we went to prove to people how much of a family the mcrmy are, and how it's not all about wearing black clothes and 'being depressed'. "They're just a band, get over it" - everyone has a band or artist they're passionate about, and when an attack is launched, you wouldn't just stand back and watch. Anyway, us fans were being attacked too, steryotyping us all to be emo self harmers.

You don't have to like MCR, or understand how we feel, but don't any of you call us pathetic for standing up for what we believe in.
