Green Day debut at Number One!

Green Day's new album, 21st Century Breakdown, has debuted at Number One on the British album charts.

The long awaited follow-up to their mega-selling 2004 album, American Idiot, topped the charts despite only being on sale for two days. 21st Century Breakdown fought off tough competition from indie mob Maximo Park who entered the UK Top 40 at Number Six and Blur man Graham Coxon who is at 36.

In related news, Biffy Clyro side-project, Marmaduke Duke, debuted at number 14 with their second album, Duke Pandemonium.

Honestly, 21st Century Breakdown sounds like it was recored the day after American Idiot - Not as good and fresh out of ideas.

This is without a doubt their best album yet, every song is perfection and its' refreshingly different from American idiot.

Congrats Green Day!

There isn't a single stand-out track on this album. It's simply American Idiot part II and times have changed since their last release.

This album pales in comparisson to the pre-Superhits albums like Dookie and Kerplunk. Where American Idiot was an exciting, fresh and new sound for Green Day, 21st Century Breakdown is simply re-trodden ground.

Fans who don't remember, or didn't know of Green Day before they hit the big time in 2004 will love this album, those of us who grew up listening to Billie Joe when he was still chubby will long for the good old days.

The new album is very mediocre at best. What ever happened to the great songs featured dookie and Nimrod? Can't wait for Blink to come back with new material and show everyone what rock is really about!

I have to say that this album is perfectly amazing! Green Day are so bloody talented! Fair enough, people have their opinions but talent like this can't be ignored!

P.S can't wait to see them later this year! Well worth the six hour drive to wembley :P.

It seems Green Day are intent on becoming blander on more middle of the road with each new album.
This album is an absolute nadir of their career, I was hoping for better having enjoyed the Foxboro Hot Tubs diversion but the new album is god awful.
It just sounds like the crap they had left over from American Idiot.

Stick Dookie or Insomniac on for a bit and then have another listen to the new album, it is absolutely uninspired crappola.

I love the old stuff, the albums when green day did real punk, but i still think this album is fucking brilliant.

Ok its more power-pop than punk but its music that can fill stadiums plus 18 tracks and all of them top class! Not bad really.

(Green Day Wembley arena november 1st! Fuck Yes!)

It is a good album, and deserves to be number one just for the amount of hard work Green Day have evidently put into this album, but it does sound like American Idiot Continued. Perhaps next time spend 5 years writing 10 good songs instead of 18 average ones?

well worth the wait, well worth £9.99.
Its missing the epic 'Jesus of Surburbia' style song, but thats probably best left alone maybe.
Gotta hand it to Billy Joe, Mike Dirnt and Tre Cool. They've changed their sound drastically but it gives it more diversity, you've got the classic Dookie and you've got the likes of American Idiot and 21st Century Breakdown. Can't wait to see them live.

first I wanna say I'm not here for a slagging match and completely respect your opinion.

Its true Green Day have seemed to swung into this new sort of epic sounding "power pop" thing which has divided the fans a bit, but this new album in my eyes has it's old school sounding gems, have a listen to songs such as Mass Hysteria and The Static age and you may see what I mean. Even the new sound has little sprinkles of that old sound.
And so what if it sounds like American Idiot? Green Day are obviously believers in the idea that if i ain't broke, don't fix it.
And for all the stubborn old school purists out there - look at it this way, Metallica had 3 badly received albums before Death Magnetic didn't they?

I love Green Day. Always have, always will.
American Idiot was a bold new direction for them and it gained them a lot of new fans.

While I loved that album, it should have remained a one-off. I was hoping GD would return to something like their old selves, or try something altogether new again.

Instead they've just released something that sounds like the B-side compilation of American Idiot... it will pander to all those new fans who had never heard of GD before American Idiot. And frankly 21st Century Breakdown is just not very good.

Sorry boys... a generous 4/10

Finally... everyone seems to love American Idiot too much for my liking, has nobody heard Dookie or Nimrod?!?!

I hate the new crap and 4 is very generous...

come on with fucking blink...they're so lame

This really cheeses me off. i dont care what anybody says, this is green day with 70's rock, rather than american idiot part 2.

as far the people that are complaining it isn't dookie part 2, get over it. as much as i like punk rock, the punk ethics have become narrow minded. they werent, but they are now. this has been proven in the past by john lydon coming back n doing pil, instead of sex pistols 2, the clash doing their own thing, much to the disappointment of the 'punks'. and now green day are doing the same. as soon as a band lose weight and stop wearing bright blue hair, you complain. where's the freedom there, that punk preaches? dookie is dookie, nimrod is nimrod and this album is this album. deal with it

The band that gives and gives and gives.......

I am soooo chuffed with this album, I think it is great!

Times really have not changed and I think that's what Billie is bringing out. I love old school Green Day too, but Billie has obviously moved on. He's no longer the chubby young man but a man who has matured as his music and lyrics have matured. The man has children growing up in this world and as I said, times have not really changed. The young kids now are going to pay for what we've done to this world and continue to do.
