Green Day release new album

21st Century Breakdown, Green Day’s much anticipated follow-up to their mega-selling 2004 album, American Idiot, was released worldwide today.

The Friday release date follows a similar move to heavy metal legends Metallica when they released their Death Magnetic album last year.

However, having already leaked on the internet and with less than 48 hours until this week’s album chart closes - not to mention stiff competition from current number one Bob Dylan and new released from indie nerks Graham Coxon and Maximo Park - will the Berkeley punk trio manage score the coveted number one album slot?

Post your thoughts below...

Geeeeeeeez. K!! They've already topped the presale chart! without release. I went to my local hmv today at 3.20pm and got the penultimate copy (minus special edition packs). 5 barstad years!!!! If it doesn't go top i'll go mad.

~almost as mad as i got when i found out i couldn't get tickets. -.-

This album is one long song, it Meanders along with a sense of predictable inevitability, I have a been a longtime Green day fan, but this album has made me question my loyalty. In such cash strapped economic times, do youselves a favour and don't buy it, just listen to American Idiot and adjust the speed and Tadaaa, or for the purists go back to good old Dookie.

i hate it when a new album gets all hyped up way before the release date .. it gets your hopes up and then when the damned thing comes out your bitterly disappointed.
I would love to say that hasn't happened with 21st century breakdown - but unfortunately it has. I love green day but this album is such a let down, still they might sound better live :\ cant wait to see 'em in sheffield :)

I love this album! I have been a Green Day fan for 14 years and own every single album and I think it's great!! Yeah I think Dookie is the best album but bands need to change with the times. Every album sounds different and thats why they are still around 22 years on! Can't wait to see them in October!! xx

First off, I like Coxon and Maximo Park. Genre snobbery is an ugly thing to behold, bad Kerrang! Very bad! If I'm not mistaken those 'indie nerks' get played a whole lot on Kerrang! Radio....

Secondly, I'm listening to it for the first time right now. So far so good. it's very 'Warning'ish, IMO, and that's no bad thing.

Do I give a hoot if it gets to #1? No, don't be silly. Record sales are in no way a relflection of anything. Would it be nice to see something good at the top spot? Course it would. Anything to get Lady Gaga to jog on is a good thing, but it's not the be all end all, and nor should it be.

what I thinks wierd is Kerrang gave this 5 Ks, where as they gave american idiot only 4, it seems that now Green day are more popular than ever Kerrang this that whatever they do is great.

american idiot is way better than 21st century breakdown. dont get me wrong its a good album but i cant see it living up to whats said about it.

you know what this is pretty good... there are some crappy songs, like song of the century and know your enemy... but restless heart sydrome and horse shoes and handgrenades are both awesome songz

yea unfortunatly this album is just a big bag of balls. i love green day, i even liked the new direction that the last album followed but this album seriously is washed up. green day are washed up. everything they have released since american idiot is balls. i think the whole commercial pop thing has got to their heads and they think that by even having a great producer such as butch vig at their side, it'll make them even bigger. green day let me give u advice, you are a great pop punk band, dont try to be anything else cos ur just never going to convince anybody apart from the teenage girls that couldnt give a damn about the music only ur image which is the only thing thats getting u noticed in the first place. so there...now i can breathe again lol

Great album, love it now but didnt when i first listened to it..
If you expect too much itll be shit for ya, and im guessin alot of people have expected the old green day.
Theyve matured and tbh, exepcting music similair similair to Dookie would be a bit of a stupid thing to do....

New album is awesome guys however what is going on? are you three intent on selling out? over here in the UK you have ahuge punk fanbase including me. I have been into you since 39smooth. You are everywhere now, and my brother who is into 80's pop music and HATES rock etc, actually had the cheek to say to me that Green Day are not rock anymore, but pop rock for kids. As a massive punk girl fan of yours, that comment got right on my t**s and i know you guys still have the attitude. Why ruin your reputation and fab music by becomming popular with regular kids and even my mum damn it. I love Green Day and have seen them several times including in Milton Keynes in 2005. What happened to Kerplunk and American Idiot, lads? As i said, i love your new stuff, but do not wish for you to do a Fall Out Boy or Lost Prophets. Please don't give up on Rock/Punk as i will cry. You still kick ass even though i'm 31 now xxxx
