Last month three Egyptian teenagers were arrested in the country's capital city, Cairo, for graffiti offences.
Initially authorities thought the sketches belonged to a new terrorist faction, however the doodles, including one which featured a drawing of a headless man with a broomstick, were traced back to local emo fans.
The arrests have subsequently sparked a backlash against the musical genre, which is referred to as 'emu' by Egypt's conservative media.
"State security sees us as a dangerous underground, as Satanists, as queers and faggots," an anonymous emo told a state-run newspaper.
The news comes a year after British newspapers such as the Daily Mail demonised emo following the suicide of My Chemical Romance fan Hannah Bond.
