Alice In Chains liken illegal downloading to “prison rape”

Alice In Chains released Black Gives Way To Blue, their first studio album in 14 years, this past Monday (September 28) and within minutes of it hitting stores, file sharers were illegally distributing it over peer-to-peer networks.

In an interview with US radio station, Chicago Q101, AIC drummer Sean Kinney has likened his band’s first experience of illegal downloading to “prison rape”.

"It's like going to prison - you know you're going to get raped but you're not ready for it,” he said. “You think you are, but you're not prepared for how violent that rape is. 'Wow - he's really giving it to me'."

I think mr kinney may have hit on a good point there, lets send all the gits who ruin the music for the rest of us by illegally sharing it and pushing up cd costs to prison so they can know what it feels like to be screwed over without due cost (in other words they are fucking us by making us pay more so they can be someones bitch for a month or two)

shut up, you are wrong. bands make fuck all money from albums, most of the money goes to the greedy record labels that don't care about music or know anything about it, they just want to sell vast quantities of plastic disks, hence why most music out today is shit. I downloaded this album, but i paid £30 for a ticket to see them. touring is how bands make their money and that is how i am paying them.

its true. the bands make hardly any money.

for every album sold the band/artist will only make a couple of quid.

it's actually closer to 15p per unit sold.

See I'm in two minds about this on the one hand people who can afford music still illegally download music.

Where as if you watch a program like Global Metal you see that people in countries where metal is essentially illegal only have downloading to get the songs. Music for me should be global and in my opinion they should be allowed to. Unfortunately I can't see a way to make it only these people who can get the music online.

Illegally downloading is like raping the guy?
What would happen if we robbed his house? How would he posibly find something hyperbolic enough to liken that too?

For years before file sharing the music industry ripped of the customers by overcharging or putting out poor products. And downloading has been a problem for more than 10 years now and what do they do about it, they sue the customers. Why haven't they provided a site where you can listen to albums before you buy, they don't support spotify or last fm. If its as big a problem as the record labels are saying then provide somewhere, they could provide links for places to buy the albums. They could charge companies for linking to them so they could cover the costs. Lets face most of us try before we buy, if I buy a pair of jeans I try them on, if I want to check a DVD out I go and rent and the list oges on but the music industry refuses to have a decent system of trying beofre buying. And the shops that have listening posts won't change whats on them for you to listen. Then they tell the bands they haven't made any money so can't pay them, seems to me the record labels are just ripping of bands as well as customers now.

Yeh I'm sure all rape victims will feel his pain.

I hope for his sake that he's been mis-quoted as that's an unforgivably insenstive and stupid comment to make.

yeah grables has it right. if bands want to make money ditch the label, maybe fans would buy if they knew if wasnt going to crap global records to spend on pop or make a good band rubbish byt refusing to release the album.

I bet Layne is turning in his shallow drug fuelled grave right at this moment in time. Likening illegal downloading to prison rape is like pushing play-doh through a key hole. it just makes no sense.

This is a pile of shit! I seriously think that people may not download if record labels and huge stores didn't charge such extortionate prices. I buy albums I like and I support bands that release good music, but the last thing anybody wants to happen is them buying an album, the alum turns out to be poor and then the customer is out of pocket to the tune of at least £10 (generally more when albums are first released). File sharing is a good way for people to see if they like the album first or not. Also it is a good way for people to "share" their music with other people, it's good publicity. Anyway, i'm off to go and download the new Alice in chains album now.

I think you'll find Alice in Chains' album IS on Spotify, at least it was when I listened to it on Monday :-).

File sharing is illegal and wrong. You cannot hide behind the excuse that the bands don't make any money from albums, its still stealing.

If you buy a jar of coffee, the poor bastard who grew it hardly gets anything but you don't go and refuse to pay for it do you, you give the money to the shops and the big brands...

And while we are at it, I cannot think of any new album this year where I haven't been able to listen to most or all of the album for free quite legally through an amalgamation of websites. Just because its not there at one click of a button doesn't mean its not there.

Personally I think its nice not to have heard a whole album before buying it and I think you'll find the price of a CD has fallen since downloading became a problem( especially if you buy on te net)

Anyway happy friday x

Yup it is stealing and I feel quite good knowing I'm stealing from the big fat cats in the business of selling plastic discs at hideous prices. I fully support the artists I listen to by regularly attending tours and purchasing merch. I've seen Alice In Chains twice this year and bought two tops. Total cost : 120ish? Your damn right I'll 'steal' that album for free.

look bands and artists have been going on about this for years about file sharing is ripping them off and stuff. you cant stop file sharing some brainy guys will find a new way of sharing music and DVDS or even keep file sharing the way it is now. 30 years time still be the same wont change

i do see the point it file sharing is bad and its wasting the bands and artists efforts to make "that" album. But they make the big money by doing tours , its only way you get into making big money. albums are nothing to what they make in tours.

yes ive done illegal downloading will i stop doing it? nope . music shops charge to much now days and with everything going up in price more people will do it , and its not like the police is going to arrest everyone that is doing illegal downloading.

Yeah, I mean he's a twat for saying that. It's nothing like it. Admitantly he said prison rape, so he wasn't saying all us rape victims...

But still - incredibly unsensitive. If I thought this band were worth the space on my HD I would download their album illegally just out of spite for that comment...but they ain't.

I bet more people are downloading after reading ths.

You are aware that there are very few sites that let you legally listen to music don't you? Myspace, Last.fm and Spotify are probably the only ones.

Youtube is actually illegal despite what you think. Most record labels just dont see the point in getting it taken down, but it is actually illegal to put songs up there or listen to them on there...

Most sites are illegal. Besides - as long as you buy merch/see them on tour or just *buy* the album AFTER you decided you like them, then it's fine.

And not all CD prices have fallen, Genghis Tron was £17 in my local shop - I refused to pay that and instead borrowed it off a rich friend who bought it...there are very few artists I pay rediculous prices for.

Maybe people will feel bad for him once he stops being so, you know, rich.

So anyone that pays for this new album deserves prison rape? I thought so. Layne is spinning in his grave at this shit.
