Rage Against The Machine top the charts!

Congratulations to Rage Against The Machine who have beaten X Factor winner Joe McElderry to top the British charts at Christmas.

Leaked figures reveal that McElderry’s cover of Miley Cyrus’ recent hit, The Climb, sold 450,838 this week, while Rage’s 1992 hit sold a staggering 502,672 copies, making it not only the fastest selling digital single based on first week sales, but also the only Christmas Number One to be decided entirely on digital sales.

UPDATE: The official results were confirmed at 18:46 when BBC Radio 1 DJ Scott Mills revealed that McElderry was in second place.

Well this sucks.
i know people are gonna hate me, and i dont care.

Joe is a babe who has a beautiful voice. I think its unfair that a bunch of losers decided they didnt like Simon Cowell enough to ruin Joes chances. Do you think i like Simon Cowell?! OF COURSE I DONT. the mans a total dick. I got the CD becuase Joes voice is amazing and he, as a person and as a singer, deserves it.

Dont get me wrong, i have nothing against RATM. I mean, CONGRATS! It only took the song 15 fuckin years to get to number one. you know what the funny thing is? it didnt get to number one because people like the song or because it deserves it, it got to number one to 'prove a point' to a total ass hole who has so much money it doesnt matter if his 'new product' gets to number one or not! what a piss take.

well, at least all the money goes to charity.

hell yeh, he should have been good enough to get a contract without a stupid tallent show.
im not sayin hes a bad singer, but he could write all his songs rather than copy others.

good fight rage!!!

Posted by jonny | December 20, 2009 6:52 PM | Reply to this

you're full of shit
it doesn;t matter to joe if he was #1 or not
he'll still get shitloads off of album and single sales so i doubt that this will have ruined his christmas
plus, this shows that rock music stil matter to society and that people don't just eat up what they are fed

Posted by will | December 20, 2009 6:52 PM | Reply to this

You clearly don't get the message. Not to 'prove a point'. It's to STAND UP for what we believe in instead of having media shit forcefed down us. Get fucked you stupid arrogant fuck.

In 10 years, nobody will know the fuck Joe is. RATM will still be remembered and will continue to be popular.

I have nothing against wee Joe and I really like the guy and his voice but how many opportunities are we gonna have to have Rage at number 1?
I think its brilliant but good luck to Joe in his career

This is a massive step forward for the music industry, the fact that we CAN topple x factor and now we've shown we can do it once, we can sure as hell do even more in the years to come.

It's just manufactured crap, the person(s) who win(s) get the Christmas No1 (or not in this case :D) and then release about two more songs, and you don't hear about them again. It's all hype! Anyway, how could he have possibly got No1, he covered Miley Cyrus for Christ's sake!! anyone who covers anything by that cheap-manufactured-Disney-whore deserves decking! :)

OMG, I have never felt so nervous listening to the chart before. I was so nervous. I lost hope nearly. I felt silly at times, thinking we could beat what has become an institution. I dont know why people feel the need to buy the xfactor crap. Some people don't like rage, and think it's shouting and not real music. I love that song from rage, cracking tune, and reminds me of good times too. Perfect song to choose to rally behind. Victory to the people, we did it. Thank you to everyone who believed we could do it, thank you to everyone who bought the record xxx

A fine example being set here. The people have spoken! Nothing personal against Joe Whatshisface whatever he's called but seriously, the past four years have seen x-factor singles hit the top. Predictable. Boring.
This no.1 is us UK music lovers making a point. Not all of us want processed, manufactured, safe for radio pop tunes.

Rage deserved to be Number One for Xmas, because they have done so much more than that twat will ever do. I mean, think about it, we won't even know who this Joe guy is next year! Thank fuck that some people actually took a stand and got their point across! Well done Rage!

Its about time a band like Rage are number 1. About time its REAL musicians who are in the chart not just 'entertainers' who have a record deal handed to them on a plate.
We need more real bands in the charts

Real music, with real meaning and real feeling, as opposed to a guy with a camper voice than Will Young covering a tweeny girl's syrupy balled with no more emotion than what can be molded from his eyebrows.
It doesn't matter that it's an arranged mainstream competition that's been won. Actual musicians that have spent years working at their craft made it to the top of that list for the first time in too many years, desite the whinging of the manufacturers and the manufactered that some little boy has put in a wee bit of effort for a couple of weeks.

Christmas Day at my Grandma's with the radio on suddenly seems a lot more interesting.

Yeah... no.
He's "only 18" and has won a talent contest, has a million pound contract and has hit 2nd in the charts with a song he didnt even write. Oh, my heart bleeds.

I am delighted :DD I swear i almost cried when i heard that rage against the machine got number one :L

Just gotta say tho, that i don't think Joe is THAT bad......this isn't a personal attack on him.......it's just that being forced into buying this crap is annoying as hell!

I've always been annoyed that as a young rock fan, i pretty much have missed out on seeing the glory days of my fave bands, hopefully this will signal the ascent of rock music once again, and then i can finaly say i lived during the great era of rock :DD

i'm probably one of the few unbiased ones commenting.

firstly, pop is not manufactured shit, it's what the majority of people want, people usually want to hear something modern. after all, music is a business. some bands/artists choose to not do what people want, go against the target market, hence not the success as others. simon cowell is an entrepreneur. he doesn't make this music to spite other genres, he does it to make money, ONE OF THE MAIN AIMS OF AN ENTREPRENEUR. he made it so X factor would generate the most money over a set period of time. he is a great example of a successful entrepreneur.

RATM winning is not "a stand from what the people want". it's just more people bought the single. imsure if all 19million people watching X Factor final bought the single, they would've "beaten the fuck" out of RATM.

anyway, good job RATM, gratz on the no. 1. they have a collection of great songs, this being one of them.

I'd just like to say congrats to ratm and everyone who got involved, It's made a lot of people very happy. A lot of people who will remember for years to come. The majority of people who are upset by this will most probably have forgotten by next year.
Another thing I'd like to mention is that this proves ratm to be the most successful band in the world, as they have achieved more goals that they have set out to achieve than any other band out their in my opinion and this is great proof that "pop" music is no longer the most popular genre of music!!

Great work everyone!!!

Thats brilliant news, because to be honest, if you wan't to listen to someobody completely murder a Miley Cyrus song, listen to Miley Cyrus.

We need the same thing next year, lets keep X-factor off the number one spot for EVER!!

Posted by Amy | December 20, 2009 8:51 PM | Reply to this

this is total bull..
i dont give a s##t
the reason why 'you had to prove a point' was cos limewire has taken over if people who like rock+metal didnt skank their favourite bands off then there wouldnt be a reason to f##king prove it you retards.
rock music would be at the top but the fact is pop is sutable for all ages ratm arnt. your gran isnt gonna listen to that crap over xmas lunch is she?! she would be repulsed wether you are or not.
thats why rock isnt at the top of the charts every week like pop cos it has a wider audience if people didnt swear for the sake of it then it to would have a wider audience.
JOE DESERVED it, imagine how he feels (not that people care they just wanna shove it in simon cowells face, truth be told its jealousy he has what everybody wants.)
i bet over half you watched xfactor which makes everyone whos watched xfactor and brought ratm looked like utter hypocritial dicks.
its took this song 15 years to get to number 1 and even that wasnt cos people liked it.. get a grip and grow up.
an xmas number one should be an xmas song not a pointless battle.

I don't have a personal vendetta against Joe, but I feel that for too long, boy-band-style, manufactured music has ruled the charts.

I love the raw, fire-spitting, anti-fascist fury of Killing in the Name of... I downloaded it a year or so ago from iTunes just out of love for the track. I'm so happy it's number 1! Yessss!!!

Posted by pinkyandrexa | December 20, 2009 8:53 PM | Reply to this

I am absolutely bloody estatic! haven't stopped grinning all evening :o)

heard lots of people on my facebook crying about "poor Joe" and how mean we have been, do they not see that this whole campaign has been no different to that of the x-factor? most people who bought Joe's single would have bought whoever won because it's x-factor, we bought RATM because of what it stood for too.

no one has the right to be #1, we live in a democracy and we chose what we wanted to be #1, why has our say considered to be so different? why should Joe automatically be granted the right to have a christmas #1 just because he was on a TV show?

i'm so glad x-factor have been put in their place, the people have spoken!

I think you are all being massive dicks. The point of this campaigne was not to give 18 year old Joe shit for trying to achieve his dream so leave the kid alone he has done nothing wrong. (i thought it was aimed at simon/X-factor)

I know youare all happy and that but Give the kid a break he is awesome and has a great voice, im sure he is very happ with a number 2 spot.

why couldent you of done this campaing last year because joe is so much better than all the other x-factor winners.

Well done to you all on getting it to number 1 but you do know that it has proved nothing because in a few months time joe will have his album out and it will do great. JLS, Leona, Alexandra and probobly Danyl and others from this years x-factor will all have albuma aswell which will do great. where will RATM be in a few months ....forgoten. (Dont get me wrong i like them but its true)

PS. you have all been saying about the x-factor being number 1 because of the media, well do you realy think that this campaign would of worked without the media...NO.

you all say that knowone wants to listen to the people and the songs that come from people off the x-factor. YOU AER WRONG. If knowone wanted to hear it then they wouldent watch the show and you wouldent have to set up a campaign to beat the winner to number 1. X.factor got on average 16 mill viewers each week and 19 on the final which shows people do want to see this. Also you have all been saying how x-factor winners are one hit wonders which is not true Eg. leona has been doing great and girls aloud and wil young who both came from talent shows release singles year after year that do great and a lot of the other contestants who may not of won have got big parts in west end plays. Next week joe will be number 1 and then britains got talent will come on and then x-factor again so this whole campaign has just been a waste of time.

anyways well done on geting to number one because i know a many of you will feel happy and like they have achieved something.

i wish joe well for the future.

Finally! Proof that the music industry still has some credibility! This is not just a victory for Rock music, but for music as a whole! This was a victory for all of the artists who have worked their asses off, but have had to sit back and watch pampered pricks like Joe get all the fame for their one single, then die out. This is proof that when we are united, the people of great britain are pretty unbeatable :D

Posted by Rachel | December 20, 2009 9:09 PM | Reply to this

you could of used this campaigne to give a new band who could use the publicity a head start. instead you waste this opertunity on RATM who are huge and realy dont need this. they wont appreciate this but a new struggling band would of

you could of proved somethig and made a differance instead all you have done is prove that a few people can press download many times.

It's an excellent way to end this year as well.
I say we do it all over again next year!

RATM are so much better than the shit that comes from the xfactor.
The only decent bit about the xfactor is the auditions because its funny to watch people who are shit at singing.

The climb was a shit song anyway :P

Firstly Awesome, secondly keep it clean no need for all the swearing.
Fact is it's a great victory not just for rock music but for music in general. In my humble opinion Joe isn't a great singer, there are loads of people who can sing just as well and appear at Kareoke nights all the time!
I can appreciate good singers even if I don't like the music. But common he's average. RATM are a great band it's a great song. ROCK ON

lets see RATM get to number 1 on there own without a silly campaign to annoy simon.

from what i remember the song only got to 25 when it was released. which is pretty good but its not number 1 is it.

I agree with you to an extent. I hate when people brand music as rubbish simply because it's "pop". I mean, okay, people don't like some music, but certain pop artists (Mika, Lady Gaga, Take That come to mind) write and play their own music and instruments, which is worth noticing and praising. And, yes, as you said, people like the modern touch, whether it is the artist's own work or not.

I always wonder how rock and metal fans would feel if the tables had turned, and pop music was the exception, whilst metal was the norm. Makes us all out to be a bit hypocritical really, I guess.

Regardless, well done to both artists, they've both sold loads. Well done Rage.

Just one thing -

"pop is sutable for all ages"

No, it isn't. I mean, yes, generally pop is pretty fun for people of all ages, but look at the lyrical content of many pop songs, and it honestly isn't suitable for young children who idolise these people. I'm not saying rock music is suitable, but pop isn't spotless either.

RATM wrote a classic album, a rare case of great music, substance and sentiment that will last generations, they had already won the war before this battle began.

I have nothing againt Joe, but its regurgitated unmemorable crap he's spewing out, a cover of a song that wasn't worth covering and will drop out of memory about as quickly as it takes your average turd to hit the toilet.

Unfortunately by winning he's a puppet on a string with proabably little control over his future or musical direction, a sacrifice he has willingly made for his 15 minutes.

Posted by jon | December 20, 2009 11:17 PM | Reply to this

I'm sorry but what a stupid idiot that Ellie kid is up there, I'm up for people having an opinion but FFS, how could you even justify that Joe McElderry deserves the Christmas no.1 because a) he won a reality TV SHOW competition and b) because the general public opinion of him is, "yeah what a nice, well mannered, cute Welsh lad rah rah rah"
how could people even bang on about him "deserving" the no.1 - just because, when at the end of the day it should be the music that counts.
And my fucking God, it's a cover of a Miley Cyrus...another product of another Syco-Cowell-esque machine that is Disney.

"Killing In The Name" is a strong, political song just like all the other incredible ones that Rage have ever made in their albums...it doesn't have to be in the mainstream domain for them to be considered as "good".

Because if anyone had any decent taste in, and wide variety of interest in music would know that Rage has a dedicated following and a widely earned respect from all music spectrums because their songs convey very strong messages to people who listen and think about all the fucked up things that are happening in the world... and you've got all these people that are de-sensitised by all this force-fed media like Miley Cyrus, and the X Factor.

Posted by P | December 20, 2009 11:32 PM | Reply to this

people who keep saying simon is getting paid anyway.....its not the whole point. Fact is:
-its not x factor again
-its real music at the top of the charts
-it shows how the real music fans actually care about the state of the charts and have taken a stance
-rage's proceeds went to charity which shows how the people of rock/metal etc actually care about real things in the world such as poverty
-a smaller band wasnt used because it wouldnt have worked aswell and also this song was used because of the nature of the song. Anyone figure?

I find it astonishing that people are still unhappy, just because simon cowell gets money, how about the fact that joe mc'xfactor fag who naively said rage were talentless has been coompletely shown up by his own fans, rage, rages fans, rock fans and by himself. THIS IS A GOOD THING.

Because these victories usually involve an awful lot of bandwagon jumping.
Anyway, well done Rage.

I think we are now moving to a period that metal will totally dominate the singles charts.I heard there is already plans for to have a programme on national TV that will have duelling metal band contestants hosted by Stuart Donkell. The winner of the competition will have the privalege of being promoted on every available TV programme on in the UK to give it maximum exposure. Also being backed up by the mobile phone companies giving away 5 free download tracks for people who have a mobile phones, but exclusively available to people who are known Metalheads. This would ensure that there would be absolutely no possibility that a manufactured pop band would ever get near Christmas no.1 again & save the nation the increasingly common narcolepsy epidemic that was sweeping the nation when exposed to music output put over on media stations. This had been steadily been increasing over a period from 2004 when the popularity of an unnamed programme had been on air.

This is a mega achievement! I think some people need realise is that this is not about Sony/Simon Cowell getting money blah blah blah ....... this is about the feelings of the "silent majority" towards our modern day pop music industry! Each and everyone who bought the single; we've taken the power back from Xfactor/ITV/Simon Cowell/the Uk charts!

Posted by Goggs | December 21, 2009 7:53 AM | Reply to this

I could state many reasons why this "race for no.1" wasn't fair. One reason being; why the hell is it based purely on digital sales?

Posted by Mel | December 21, 2009 9:35 AM | Reply to this

A cover of Miley VIRUS v Killing in the name of...there was only ever going to be one winner!

Plus:
1) proceeds are going to charity
2) it'll introduce people to RATM
3) it's nice to have some variation @ xmas time.
4) HUGE TUNE!

It wasn't at all, it's just that RATM didn't get a physical release because the whole thing wasn't planned by the band or record company. Which makes it even better because they beat Joe's digital AND physical cd sales to top the charts!

rage aren't number one because of the song. it's clearly to prove a point to the rest of the music world. and you can't say it's not either, if it was because of the song, it would have been number one all those years ago.
and could you just leave it with all the joe abuse. what has he done to deserve all the stuff everyone's been saying on here?

tbh, I don't think what the song was is really relevant, though RATM are good I'm not going to pretend to be a fan. I think it's just good that people with actual talent who have actually worked for their fame got the no.1 spot, instead of another talentless factory model.

THE MUSIC INDUSTRY IS AN ABSOLUTE DISGRACE AND THESE PIMPS NEED TO BE EXPOSED FOR WHAT THEY ARE.
CLOSE DOWN YOUR BROTHEL SIMON, WE ARE ON TO YOU BIG TIME!
I went to see a Curtis Stigers Jazz Quartet Concert at Newcastle City Hall last year, as we all know or should know, these musicians are among the best in the world and Curtis himself in the league of the very eminent among us as a skilled Composer, Musician and Performer. Needless to say the show was fantastic but sadly there was only about Six Hundred people in the hall, the upstairs closed and the downstairs only half full. We could blame many factors, (excuse the pun), but what ate a huge chunk out of my heart was whilst standing in the foyer during the interval, the walls were adorned with posters of one of these pop idol / xfactor kids having completely sold out his tour and with most venues having to put on a second night due to the huge demand. What is so sickening, the useless twats who bought tickets to see this “one song sung amateur” had only ever seen him perform a couple of ‘one verse one chorus’ audition songs on TV, and he didn't even get through to the finals apparently. God help us please.
It takes my mind back to an Art Garfunkel interview I saw many years ago at one of these shit pretentious awards ceremonies where all these young (only ever sung 2 song twats) were winning all these awards as the best this and the best that. He responded by saying "this is a sad time for music". I believe it is getting worse.
WELL DONE RAGE, WHO IS NEXT, I AND MANY MILLIONS ARE RIGHT BEHIND YOU?

When did the media choose exactly? 19 million people watched X Factor...I know there is more to this...but still...all you've done is given Simon Cowell more money (as he invested in Rage's label years ago...)

I can't help but wonder this.

Given her wealth, outrage over the treatment of her beloved Joe, and not forgetting her propensity for extreme violence, does this mean Cheryl Cole will be obtaining lists of all those who downloaded the Rage song, and will then proceed to beat seven bells out of the buyers, using her "kick the shit out unarmed innocent nightclub attendants" combat skills?

I hope all your health insurance is paid up, folks. Psycho Cheryl's on the loose again...

ellie, your not exactly sharp are ya? Fact of the matter is that "joe" kid doesn't deserve any record sales at all the bent bastard! Tbh he fails at life and at singing.

Im over the moon he didn't get number 1 or any of those other "pop" people like Alexandra Burke for example who sucks majorly.

So TBH RATM deserved it the song ent great but it rapes any "pop" shitty song which is in the charts ATM.

Next year, why don't you all try and get some unsigned bands into the top 10?

Maybe give some young bands their first taste of sucess.

It's really funny how none of you have even noticed how "Fuck you, I won't do what you tell me" was dubbed out of the radio and the music video

First of all, why does he "deserve" a number one? No-one DESERVES a number one single... It's not something an artist can actually work at tbh, it's not up to them, it's up to their listeners.

As for Joe having a great voice, lots of people have great voices. Lots of people play instruments brilliantly or write amazing songs and get nowhere in the charts because they're not generic enough.

Personally, I think this says a lot about Joe's marketing campaign. If 7 million people watched the show, then why couldn't they sell even half a million singles??!

Finally, I know there are people who love the song, and that's fair enough. Everyone's entitled to an opinion. Just maybe consider that a guy singing a Miley Cyrus song isn't gonna be the best song out there!!

Respect.
