Tom Morello rings the Kerrang! office

Rage Against The Machine guitarist Tom Morello rang the Kerrang! office this morning to share his feelings at ending Simon Cowell’s four-year domination of the Christmas charts after a Facebook campaign helped the political-rock legends take the Christmas Number One slot from The X Factor’s Joe McElderry yesterday.

“It’s a banner day,” Morello told Kerrang! Editor Nichola Browne. “It’s the anarchy Christmas miracle of 2009 and we are just happy to be a part of it. We’ve been calling and texting each other all day! It’s the greatest chart upset ever in the UK and we’re just amazed that we were a small part of it.

“A majority of people buying singles in the last week made their voices heard very loudly and clearly and they knew what they were voting for and they knew what they were voting against,” he said. “We are pleased to be part of the wind in the sails of this organic grassroots campaign.”

Not only have the band pledged to donate profits of the single to the homeless charity Shelter, but they also vowed to perform a free victory gig in the UK next year to thank those who bought their single if they were to reach the top spot. Today Morello revealed that the band “are definitely coming” and are currently working out a gameplan for the show.

“We just began talking about it today because frankly we didn’t know what the result was going to be,” he admitted, “but we couldn’t be more excited about it – it’s going to be insane.

“If I have one message, it’s heartfelt thanks to all our friends, fans and freedom fighters who worked as hard as people can work to make this song Number One against incredible odds.”

Check out the issue of Kerrang! out on January 6 for our full, exclusive interview with Tom Morello.

I could not believe my ears when I heard "The Climb" was number TWO and Rage won by a staggering 50,000 singles!

Well done to everyone to fought hard, bought the single and donated to Shelter (an AMAZING £60,000 was raised, and theres more to come when rage donate their royalties they get from the sales!!)

I know a free gig of this size will take a good couple of months of plan, but I hope RATM confirm a maybe not date, but which month the gig will take place in the next week or so, so it seems more "real"...

ENTER SANDMAN FOR CHRISTMAS 2010 NUMBER 1!!

Stop copying, have your own personality!

(it seems that you didn't understand the lyrics of 'killing in the name')

this idea is really bad and Metallica is definitively not the kind of band that will represent us.
What's the point in making such an annoucement one year before. We will have hundreds of followers like you that will open their facebook groups with their own song, and it will lead to a large defeat.

Next year, we will need far more organisation to make this happen again. So guys, please stop opening your own 'my favorite song for christmas 2010 number one' facebook group

I agree with the french bloke.

Posted by Girish | December 21, 2009 5:17 PM | Reply to this

Thats where your wrong Francois. If one person can do it, why cant anyone else. Sure there may be other people making groups but if this guy does it early, hes got more of a chance. And theres no point choosing a song which has meaningful lyrics anymore, cause we have already expressed what we are trying to prove. Having a song like enter sandman will prove that change has happend, which is all there is left to prove.

Good on the dude dooing this, and youve got my vote

Posted by Crooked Jim | December 21, 2009 8:54 PM | Reply to this

Sandman for no.1 2010! Yes.
People who like Rock/metal tend o be quite rebellious and also smart, hence they probably download music 'un-officially' so to speak. Not to generalize without observation. Hence maybe we might get decent music in the charts more if more of it got paid for . Respect the artists, buy music!

This would be an utter failure.

The whole point of this campaign was because people were angry at the fact that the competition for xmas number one, well wasnt a competition anymore, we needed a major shake up of the "norms", and what band better represents a "fuck you! im not a mindless sheep, I have an opnion" than RATM?

Posted by meepee molko | December 21, 2009 9:14 PM | Reply to this

Check by yourself and you'll see there are already hundreds of other 'christmas 2010' groups on Facebook. There are far too many choices now, whereas we need only one group so that everybody would buy the same song.

It won't work if everybody wants his favourite song to be number one.

How can we choose the next song? Kerrang and NME could join their force to make readers vote for the next Xmas song... or maybe they could organise a contest between unsigned bands. or, why not doing it with 'killing in the name' again if the money goes to charities.

well I don't have the answer but there is plenty of time to think about it. let's enjoy christmas 2009 first!

WOO! GO RATM!! :D

BRING ON THE WALL!!

It was only a matter of time before every mindless cocksucker started their own Facebook campaign,

And you say that Joe McElderry's fans are sheep...

Posted by Headmaster Bates | December 22, 2009 9:09 AM | Reply to this

The only reason that this was all going on was because Simon Cowell is still making money out of both joe and Rage!

Posted by wousten | December 22, 2009 12:52 PM | Reply to this

I think that we should get Engelbert Humperdinck to No.1 next year.

Strike a blow for all those pensioners who love him,

Congrats to Rage, shite song, but for an excellent cause.

Brilliant!
But don't we think it's totally ironic? Anyone know what the big chant of killing in the name is? That's right. 'I won't do what you tell me'

And what have all these people done? Exactly what all these people have done!

Oh well. Still briliant news

Posted by Hugh Davis | December 23, 2009 12:08 PM | Reply to this

Ahhh but we didn't do what the X Factor/Simon Cowell told us to do. So it still works!

Posted by Zoe | December 23, 2009 12:21 PM | Reply to this

Nice to see Kerrang latch on to the latest bandwagon, have they had enough of MCR? all the Rage "fans" put there please just leave and don't bother going to the free gig i want my ticket. Where have you been for the last decade!!! Listening to Steps is my guess.
Fags

No no no everyone STOP!

As much as I would like to see another good band at number one, we can't do it again in 2010, that would make us just as bad as Simon Cowell! It was a brilliant idea & a brilliant success but the point's now been made. The chart domination is over and we can't start a new one.

No hypocrisy, people, please!
