Why you should buy the Rage Against The Machine single

A few weeks ago Rage Against The Machine fan Jon Morter set up a FaceBook group to encourage rock fans to buy the LA political metaller’s 1992 hit, Killing In The Name, as a protest against the perceived monopoly reality TV show the X Factor has over the Christmas singles market.

Morter told Kerrang! last week that he “snapped” while watching the show one night and set up the group to see who else agreed with him. When K! started covering the story earlier this month, the group had just under 60,000 members. Now it boats a staggering 868,552 members, and 306,115 of whom have purchased Killing In The Name this week putting it just under 9,000 copies ahead of X Factor winner Joe McElderry’s cover of Miley Cyrus' The Climb according to mid-week chart reports.

While it is mildly amusing that a song which features the refrain ’Fuck you I won’t do what you tell me!’ might be the festive Number One, as it was with The Darkness’s attempt at a Christmas hit in 2003 with Christmas Time (Don't Let the Bells End), there’s a much more important reason why rock fans should care about this seemingly pointless chart battle – the future of rock music itself.

With reality TV shows such as X Factor, American Idol, Britain’s Got Talent etc. providing record companies with a wealth of fame hungry wannabes that they don’t have to spend time or money promoting or developing because they come complete with a ready made audience who will buy their records regardless, they have stopped signing rock and metal bands who, traditionally, take years to make any significant financial returns for record companies.

“These reality TV shows really puts the blockers on new up and coming bands who write and perform their own stuff because the labels focus on channelling their marketing spend into these (mostly) short term, 'sure-fire' TV-fuelled successes,” a senior music industry figure, who wishes to remain anonymous, told K! “It really isn’t about music, quality of music or longevity for any resulting reality TV show artists or bands.”

“Also these reality TV show artists are deemed a priority within the label and so the newer bands perhaps do not get the true attention and push to radio / press etc. that really need to make their mark, or indeed the financial support to enable them to tour,” our source added. “And what’s worse, this is happening on a global level.”

While the vast majority of comments on this website have been supportive of the Rage Vs X factor campaign, there are still a few disillusioned posters who feel that an X Factor victory is inevitable - it is not! According to figures released by The Official Charts Company, Rage Against The Machine have been significantly ahead of Joe McElderry every day this week.

You’ve still got until 11:59PM tomorrow (Saturday, December 19) to make a difference. And, even if you own it already, you can purchase Killing In The name form a number of online e-tailers for as little as 29p.

Take a stand people, your music needs you!

You do realise Cowell gets a share of the profits if you buy the RATM song, right?

That's right, fight the power by lining his pockets some more.

Buy a song by a band not signed to a massive corporate label and maybe we'll get somewhere.

Nope. while both Epic and Syco are owned by Sony BMG, Syco is a separate operating company. It's like saying Simon gets cash from every PlayStation sold.

Well this is the most pointless story ever, rock isnt going to 'die' just because someone wins the xfactor... god this whole thing is more overblown than the xfactor itself.

Whilst I'm all for a campaign that fights Cowell's influence over the charts, I really wish that a new, original, track by an up and coming band on a small label had been chosen as the 'weapon'. Re-issuing an old track by an established band on a HUGE label seems, to me, to take the sting out of the campaign. Shame. This article says that new rock bands aren't getting signed... that's the point. Support new bands. RATM don't need this kind of promotion.

Posted by Dingledoodie | December 18, 2009 12:15 PM | Reply to this

Simon Cowell established SYCO Music
SYCO parent company is Sony Music
Sony Muisc main division is EPIC Records
RATM is signed to EPIC Records

So...in a sense we are lining Simon Cowell's pockets.

Although it will still be excellent to see RATM at number 1, Christmas or not.

Its not about "rock music dying"

Its just about people getting together who all feel the same way about something. And want something different.

All these other factors get thrown in like Money, and Companys and Simon Cowell

But all the race is about is people fed up with what their being given, and so changing it for themselves, Its only DIY Fun.

What a load of condescending shit. So, all this X Factor stuff is causing major labels to stop signing rock/metal acts. And the problem is? Going down through the years, the hsitory of these labels with regard to metal acts has been, in the main, abysmal. Slammer on WEA? Carcass on Columbia? Does metal really need the major record companies?

Since the internet really took off, I actually think metal bands are adapting faster than these record companies with regards to getting their music out there, and geting their name known. Tape trading on a next level, if you will. Maybe it's just me, but I've never found it so easy to buy albums by smaller bands as now. In the early 90's trying to get albums by, say for example, Unleashed etc, was a nightmare. These days , the example the new Re-Animator? Simple.

And quite frankly, hearing this pitiful bleating from a representative of media organisation who has made a habit of ignoring or insulting various genres of rock/metal in its magazine, refuses to play pretty much anything but teen friendly shit on it's tv station, and has a fixation with the same kiddie acts and Pete Wentz's personal life on it's website? For years now, there's been this fixation on everything has to be "new and improved", fostering the attitude that if it's old, it's crap.

I just get the impression that all you're worried about is that this might harm the next Parawhore/MCR/Fall out Boy/Green Day-a-like band that you want to fawn over. Get fucked.

Metal's fine, been fine for 40 years, and will go on being fine without any "help" from people like you.

If you don't like Kerrang! then fuck off somewhere else. but you probably won't because you're sat in your bedroom at your parent's house furiously wanking with one hand and insulting people on message boards with the other 'cos you're a fat, spotty, 35 year old dole bludger.

this is aload of shit! sure rage against the machine are awesome, but so what if Xfactor get christmas number one, by buying RATM your putting money in Simon Cowels pocket ither way, so hes still benefiting from all of this, were as the campaign was supposed to be against him anyway!
and i think its best that rock music isnt main stream, coz then all the chavs go around listening to rock, thinking there all 'it' and what have you.
Rock musics fine.. its been like this for years and the best bands will get signed up if there any good.. so overall this campaign is a crock of shit :)

You need to do your research, not just listen to what most of the media tells you. As reported on Channel 4 yesterday ( and only Channel 4 for some reason ), RATM are owned by Sony Epic, a completely different division of Sony to his Syco label, buying Killing in the name will not benefit him at all.

A representitive from Amazon HAS confirmed that sales of their 29p copy of RATM do count in the charts! PLEASE stop posting the 40p bull as it doesn't apply here! If people know they can make a stand for less than the price of a mars bar it really helps the cause!

29p purchase from amazon counts! Spread the word! I personally have bought 1 copy, gifted 2 from other sites and also purchased the live version as they also count.

The point in the campaign is to show that we won't all just fold under x factor pressure. The song is complete crap! A freaking Hannah Montana song!! REALLY?? They're not even trying! They're sitting there laughing at us in the UK for accepting such crap and throwing money at it. We want to prove that we're NOT like that.

Also, lets not all be stupid here. Cowell is loaded no matter what! Even if money from this drive goes to him, so what? The aim is to discredit X Factor, not bankrupt Cowell. The former is entirely possible and the latter a futile mission!

Buy the record and show the world that the UK aren't sheep!

You can only download it. Which means if your under 18 without a credit/debit card means you can't buy it without your parents permission.... and how many parents are gonna understand the message we want to send? That means we all have to make an effort (since some people can't).
I've bought 2 copies from different places. Crying over the fact that RATM swear on BBC radio is ridiculous at least they aren't hiding it like laddy 'poke her face' gaga and britney 'if U Ceek aME' Spears.

yeah, but what happens when there's more shit singers out there? what happens when the world's so full of talentles idiots who win their way to the top by singing cheesy "christmas" songs? what happens to the smaller bands giving everything they have to be a fraction of the way up the ladder that xfactor winners are ? thats when people give up. stop going to gigs that become overpriced. stop buying dear albums. thats when music starts to die, and we have to fight against it.

Posted by jennay | December 18, 2009 4:07 PM | Reply to this

While people may sit there and mock those of us who support this, you seem to be missing the most simple of points. This isn't about fighting back at Cowell because at the end of the day who really gives a shit about the charts. It's simply about lining their pockets with as much money as possible. If anything, all this campaign will accomplish is getting more money in Cowell pockets because the majority who care what finishes at number 1 will buy extra copies of Music Industy Product No. 87238957896's single just to get it there.

But for once, just once, can't we have rage on the top spot? I'm sick of the music industry, it makes no sense to me. But this year, we could beat them at their own game. This year those who live and breath music decide the chart, not a factory that spews out the same simplistic nonsense year after year. Christ his debut single is a fucking cover. I don't have a problem with covers but if he can't write music then why is he even involved.... GAH i'm raging again.

Facebook also shows its talent at being a source for "wow check how out cool i am" by having so many more members than singles sold. I'm not in the group, and i've bought it, and i wonder how many others who aren't in the group bought the single... i'm shutting up now

Posted by Tom | December 18, 2009 4:07 PM | Reply to this

Let's face it, most people in to Punk, Rock, Metal could not give a fuck who gets to number one.

Making it a wee bit harder for some guy [I live out of the country and have never heard/seen the guy] who thought he was on to a sure thing with barely any competition, and to be out done by a fucking great band from yester-years is great.

Yeah, I'd of picked a different band, but 'who' was picked and what label they belong to is not so important.

The people who buy pop/chart music do not know anything about labels, distribution etc.

The charts have been rigged for decades anyhow.

Posted by Northern Jon | December 18, 2009 4:08 PM | Reply to this

actually I think it's important thats it's someone like RAGE, it really wouldn't be possitive for a campaign like this to be promoting say a new band, because it would be simply saying hey buy there track and giving that one band a boost beyond what they would get without it, it would not be very possitive publicity for them because there would be seriously gainin from it when there are tons of bands deserving of being bigger, a band like RAGE and the track itself is very very fitting and on top of that, it's not going to seriously effect RAGE in the long term, seriously it really actually HAD to be Killing In The Name, and it HAD to be RAGE

I think it's hilarious. Scare a few old grannies. And to the people who are flaming the person who said kerrang is for teenyboppers, they are dead right. Kerrang and metal hammer used to be about rock and metal, not emo and nu metal crap. Kiddy music, wouldn't be surprised if they'd had avril latrine on the cover. I hold no malice to joe whatshisname but to put out a cover is disgraceful, he must have a contract clause to do what he's told- load of rubbish. Vote ratm and let's get something decent in the charts, not puppets or green day rip off kiddy bands. Kerrang, back in the day you catered for rock and metal fans. Guess the emos are more of a moneyspinner for you now.

Wouldn't it be better to have a nicer sound around christmas. Who really wants to listen to Killing in the name of, which is kind of a shit song anyway, over such a festive holiday.

I no it's a popular song but there are so many better songs. It was chosen because of the lyrics, fuck you I won't do what you tell me, but the X-Factor doesn't say buy it, whereas this facebook group is. It's not really the smartest thing.

Also, rock music will not die because of this. X Factor has won the christmas number one spot for the last 4 or so years, and does rock seem to be dying. No it doesn't, in fact its getting bigger, and to be honest, when has the number one spot ever made a difference? What does it gain from being number one over christmas, more people listen to it? I'm pretty sure all radio stations will turn on Joe anyway, and if they turned on RATM on the radio to people who do not like rock music, it's frankly going to turn more people away because it's a crap song.

Seriously what the fuck are you all fucking crying about?
Whoever is behind either of these acts and/or their music it doesn't fucking matter, it doesn't matter who's pockets are being lined, it doesn't matter about what higher powers are getting profit from this. End of the day the people that really matter are those on the front line - the musicians, the performers, singers, kareoke acts or whatever you wanna call them. however they got where and whoever "owns" them they are they all share the same passion - to get up on a stage or get in a studio and do what they love, give it their all, they all love what they do equally. I'm no fan of Joe McElderry or any X-Factor shit act but I can still see that they still are loving every minute of what they do and are putting 100% into it.

Yes it would be cool to have RATM as xmas number 1 (I've already bought mine!), but I've got a feeling that a majority of you would be fairly content enough with acts like Lady GaGa, Girls Aloud or Robbie Williams being number one, as long as it wasn't an X-Factor winner again, just to break the cycle for a change.

I'm not dissing any of you I'm just saying think about how much this whole cause could potentially snowball into some self-righteous, trendy bullshit argument.

I think it was a case of Sarah trying to be smart, but using the old "I'll post using their name" trick doesn't always work.
Though some people do fall for it, as Andymark can confirm.

Jeez. Simon Cowell does not get money from it! He just owns a label which is owned by Sony Music, if he owned Sony Music then yeah he would get money from it as they own Epic which Rage is on, but as far as i'm aware, he does not. It would be like if i owned a label, and it was bought by EMI, i'd get money for every song that was released on every subsidiary label they own.

...whatever happens it has been fun being a part of this, RATM should be #1 just because they are a damn fine band and the song is iconic!! plus the profits are going to a charity rather than Simon Cowells pockets...

I don't care about what people are saying about underground music and how we're doing as we're told by all downloading rage.. who gives a crap? i#d rather not have ANOTHER year where a TV show winner got the top spot, it's time for variety, for an ARTIST rather than TV spawn churning out cover after cover to satisfy the majority.

yeah, c'mon - download rage.. put your mouth where your pockets are and actually DOWNLOAD the song.

It's not about who gets the money, otherwise you might as well say no-one should buy from any major record label ever. It's about making a point with the music that homogenised cookie-cutter pop domination is not assured, and there are just as many people out there who'd rather buy a song and support a band they love than buy 'The Christmas Single' out of sheer obligation.

Plus, opening up a whole nother generation to That Riff is totally worth it.

I am launching my own personal campaign for Christmas Is Awesome. And remember, think of jimbo this chrimbo.

I think you're right about metal being fine, certainly the likes of the Roadrunners and Nuclear Blasts of this world see to that and in this last.fm age, it's easy to join the dots. The irony is, the acts who really suffer the most under the present circumstances are pop acts who don't fit the reality TV mould for whatever reason. Take for example the Pet Shop Boys: in the early 80s they took 3 years to get signed and survived the first ever single release of West End Girls being a flop in the UK. Nowadays (even though synthpop is undergoing a revival), if they were starting out I couldn't imagine a major having the foresight to sign them at all.

I agree with you completely!!!
I'm really glad RATM won because its making people realise that rock is still out there. Since the beggining of the 90's rock has been slipping more and more out of the public eye. In the 50's to the 80's rock was mainstream but now it's underground and those who listen to the pop crap thats in the charts such as X Factor, are referring to it as 'screamo' they're oblivious to the fact that it is good music.
RATM winning christmas number one is just the beggining it shows that if those of us who believe in rock work together we can put rock back in the public eye and stop it from dying out. We can stop the pop carp taking over and bring rock back!!!
