"The Rev didn't have a bad bone in his body..."

Good Charlotte guitarist Benji Madden contacted Kerrang! to pay tribute to Avenged Sevenfold's drummer, Jimmy 'The Rev' Sullivan, who was found dead in his Huntington Beach home on December 28.

"This isn't something I have had to deal with a lot in my life, so I really don't know what to write," begins Benji. "Right now, it doesn't really feel real. [After Jimmy's service], we went to Shadows house and had a few drinks, telling our best Jimmy stories and we laughed until we cried. The Rev has more stories about him than any other person I know. Stories we couldn't tell in a church, stories that sound like exaggerations but they aren't. The Rev is rock 'n' roll through and through. One of the greats. One of those souls that comes along so rarely and just touches every single person around him. To know Jimmy is to love Jimmy. If you happen to have spent an evening out with The Rev on tour somewhere or at some get together or function, well, you were best friends for life after that. And Jimmy didn't forget it. It's not an act. I must have heard 50 people call Jimmy their best friend [during the service]. And they meant it. Loveable is a great word to describe Jimmy. Endearing. Kind hearted. Carefree. A fucking legend!

"I'm just talking about the kid who, as Shadows recalled, took communion in a 'Slayer Fucking Slayer' T-shirt when he was 12, dancing up the church aisle the whole way, making all the kids laugh. I'm talking about the guy that who stood up to his all time musical hero, for talking disrespectfully to his best friend's girl. He doesn't judge people. Rev didn't have a bad bone in his body. That quality... It is impossible to describe, he was just born with it. That's just The Rev.

"I took you for granted, Rev," he continues. "I took for granted being able to hang with you at the family get-togethers and holidays over the years. I took for granted watching you play drums. I took for granted our conversations. And fuck man, watching you play drums! You want to love music? Watch The Rev play drums. Listen to him play on a demo. Listen to him play on a record.

"Good Charlotte and A7X are more than just bands," says Benji. "We are family. We celebrate each other's lives together, holidays, weddings, kids being born. Successes and failures. Jimmy is at the heart and soul of all of it. He has taught me more then anyone I ever met in any church. And now you get to live forever, Jimmy. You are one of the greats.

"See you on the other side Rev," he concludes. "We love you forever."

First off may the Rev rest in peace and I pray for his friends and family, including all those best friends that were at his service and the fans that he touched, but I really didn't know A7X was so close to GC. I've been a fan of GC since my 6th grade year and i'm a sophomore in college now. Benji gave a great explanation of Jimmy well description, honestly he was right. Jimmy was one of those people that touched everyone and anyone. The people he touched which was anyone who knew him from what I can tell cared about him greatly. God rest his soul. : ( Rock on man.

Read the story, i cried and the slayer part was funny, we mourn for a huge loss in the rock 'n' roll world. He was the best drummer and a great friend to his fans he has met and his personal friends, such as his M. Shadows, Zacky V., Syn Gates, Johnny C., and ect. My prayers go to his family, friends, and fans.

R.I.P Jimmy
We will miss you and your never forgetten. We love you

I still can't believe this guy's gone... it's just not real. Being a massive A7X fan, i'm absolutely gutted about the news as i'm sure so many more people out there are. Benji so truthfully pointed out The Rev's kind hearted and influential personality, and as M.Shadows has said, so many people called him their best friend. There's a very empty space in my heart now, and I don't know how Avenged Sevenfold are going to recover as a band.. I'm just glad they know that they have so much support behind them from the fans.
Enjoy your little piece of heaven Jimmy, I'll see you on the otherside man, much love

This was so sweet and touching- I almost felt like I might cry! I laughed at the "slayer fucking slayer" part. It was hilarious as i tried to picture a 12 year old version of the rev dancing up that church aisle in his slayer shirt! Man it sounds like he was such a great dude. It's amazing to hear about how close he & his friends were. I hope The Rev and all of his loved ones know exactly how he touched the lives of everyone around him & how many kids (& adults!) he inspired. Once again, Jimmy, you are both loved and missed dearly. R.I.P.

btw, does anyone know who his all time musical hero was, the one he stood up to for talking disrespecfully to his friend's girlfriend? well whoever it was, that took guts! Man The Rev rocks!

It's still so unreal and hard to believe, he was too young and too special to be taken from us.
A7X at Sonisphere was the sole reason I went, and it was fucking fantastic. The Rev was in his own league, and will never be matched.
Rest in peace dude, you will live forever in our hearts.
