Madina Lake bassist hospitalised after good deed

Madina Lake bassist Matthew Leone is critically ill in hospital after being attacked in Chicago earlier this week.

According to a post on his twin brother Madina Lake frontman Nathan Leone's blog at 7:30PM yesterday evening (approximately 1:30AM British time) Matthew was severely beaten after coming to the aid of a woman who was being attacked near the singer's appartment.

"I'm afraid I have some of the worst news that has ever hit our lives," begins Nathan's blog post. "It's almost impossible to even type this update. A few nights ago, Matthew walked from my [apartment] a block and a half down the street to meet a friend for a drink.

"Half way there he saw a man severely beating his wife. Being the most amazing, strong, heroic and incredible person I know, even though the guy was twice his size, Matthew intervened. He managed to subdue this guy for a second, and since his wife was beat up pretty good, [Matthew] called the cops. As he did so, the guy jumped him from behind and beat him. This guy did things I can't even type. Afterward, he and his beaten wife left Matthew unconscious on the street.

"Matthew is in the hospital with a third of his skull removed as we wait for the swelling in his brain to go down. I'd rather not share any additional information at this time besides the fact that he acted as a hero - as he always would in any of these situations - and is paying a horrific price.

"Please send all your love and good energy and vibrations to him. I've been and will be next to him throughout the entire recovery process. We don't know enough yet details about how that will develop, but it has shocked, stunned, disgusted our best friends, family and band (which are both). The world can be evil beyond belief and as much as we want this evil eliminated, right now our hearts heads and energies need to go to my best friend, soul mate, hero, and angel, Matthew.

"Love you all and will be in touch as soon as I can muster up the emotional energy to reach out again. Please, be safe and peaceful as we get through this impossible time."

Our thoughts and prayers are with the Leone family and Madina Lake at this sad time.

Regardless of what anyone thinks of Madina Lake as a band (I have to admit, I'm not their biggest fan), this guy deserves a hell of a lot of respect and admiration.

Too many times in this world people turn a blind eye to crime and injustice, and too few people intervene when they witness something that they know is wrong, usually out of fear and self-preservation. That's just human nature I guess.

That Matthew Leone put his safety and well-being second to the needs of another is a rare and wonderful thing, and so I genuinely hope that he recovers from his injuries as soon as possible.

The world would be a much better place of there were more people like him.

I don't even know who Madina Lake are (probably not my type of music), and I only read this because of a post on twitter, but this story had sickened me.

Matthew, I hope you make a full and quick recovery, there's not many people like you around. Let's hope they catch the scum that did this and he gets what he deserves.

I'm not a Madina Lake fan. But reading this story, I can tell that the guy did something truly selfless, something I couldn't say I'd do myself.

I wish him all the best. With any luck, he'll be back up and annoying me again. And honestly, that's what i'm hoping for.

I'm not a very big Madina Lake fan, but it is such a horrific thing to happen. It just goes to show that although there are some pretty amazing people, such as Matthew, unfortunately, there are always gonna be some really horrible bastards out there. Lets hope that what Matthew did sends a little more hope in the world and shows that every little thing matters.

Matthew you are a true hero. Its so good to see that people of this calibre still exist in this cruel world, a level of bravery that can only be commended. Regardless of your opinion of the band you can only admire a guy who is willing to try and help in such a horrible situation. My heart and thourghts go out to all who are connected to Matthew and i wish him a speedy recovery.

I'm a huge fan and I've met Matthew and he (and the rest of the band) are nothing but lovely. Matthew is so sweet and this is why it comes as more of a shock.

He's so brave and such a hero. To stop to help someone show's how brave he is. And for this to happen, shows how horrible some people are.

The scum that did this should get what he deserves and more!

That is an absolutely horrific thing to happen, and I hope the poor sod pulls through. One thing that DOES get to me is whenever I read a story about something bad happening (eg this one, or SLipknot's bassist dying), a series of adverts for the band merch appear directly next to the story. That's in pretty bad taste guys...

What Matthew did was amazing. It's incredibly unfortunate and unfair that he ended up in hospital for being a good person, standing up and doing the right thing. I hope the guy that has done this to him is found and pays the price for it.

This story just represents all that is wrong is the world, but it also shows we haven't all lost our humanity yet. Some people still give a shit and put themselves in harms way to stand up for what they believe in.

my cousin is in hospital because he was jumped by 4 guys with weapons and is goin through the exact same situation . it must be hard for these guys . my prayers go out to them and matthew

Madina Lake are the exact opposite of my favourite band, I've had nothing but contempt for them since they emerged a few years back.

But there are some things much more important than music, or sport, or whatever passions a person may have.

Matthew's actions were extremely brave, and in no way does he deserve to be hospitalised in such a brutal and inhumane manner.

I, like many of the other contributors here, think very little of the music that Madina Lake produce. What I think highly of, are the actions of Matthew.

Having acted the same way as he has done in the past and come close to ending up in the situation that he is in, I truly respect him for what he has done and sincerely hope he pulls through - not for the band, not for the music, but because people who act like he has deserve admiration and respect.

I've been a madina lake fan for years and was lucky enough to meet them on the k tour 2008 where matthew wished me a happy birthday and on the latest tour he gave me his plectrum <3 he and the rest of the madina lake gang are such nice friendly people.

i was shocked to wake up and read this news, i just cant understand how anyone could do such a thing to some one like him :'(, and that women after he stopped her from being beaten just left him there what a total B***h.
matthew is such a total hero and is one of my personal heros along with the rest of the madina lake guys.

I am not a fan of Madina lake, I however seen them live quite a few times due to the tour back in October with Papa Roach and Heaven's Basement. Chatted and joked around with those guys, they are all incredibly nice and so seem to really appreciate their fans.
For this to happen trying to save someone is horific.I sincerly hope he recovers and that he will be jumping around the stage madly soon. My thought are def. with Matthew and Nathan and the rest of the band and their family.

Madina Lake are one of my fav bands of all time, and Reading this just made me think that Matthew isn't some stuck up asshole in a band who doesn't give a flying fuck about people, it shows he's a strong hero and an amazing human being. Get well soon Matthew and your fans support you all the way

Thoughts and Prayers coming from the Midwest,this happened to my son( 3 assholes jumped him) Matt know that you make up for every 10 of these assholes in the world!People like you are the ones who restore our faith in humanity. Like many others here, I'm not much of a fan of ML, but that is meaningless in this context.
What Matt did was truly brave and selfless, I'm not sure I would do the same thing and I think its a safe bet to say many of the rock stars people here look up to wouldn't.

For that, regardless of his band and his music, he deserves our respect and thoughts, sincerely hope he gets better and gets back to making crappy music soon.

We supported Madina Lake on the Cardiff leg of their recent UK tour. We thought they were all really nice and genuine guys. It's a shame that someone doing something right had to pay an unjustified price.

I have seen Madina Lake live recently and they were amazing and are the nicest guys in the world. i love seeing all these people who don't even know/like ml commenting and saying kind words, telling matthew to get well soon :)
personally, in my eyes they're the best band in the whole world, i love them more than anything.
i've met matthew twice. once at an ml signing and then at their arlene ball soundcheck.
he was so lovely. seriously, like one of the nicest people i have ever had the priveledge of meeting in my life. can't say enough about how much of a good person he is. why do bad things always happen to good people?
i froze up when i found out, and cried shortly after reading nathan's blog.
and i don't believe in a god of any kind, but if there's a force or fate out there, let it work in matthew's favour. please.
and, to echo the words of others, matthew jon leone you are a hero.

OMG................. having just read this, I feel so upset. Madina Lake are such an awesome band.
No one deserves to be brutally attacked for stepping in to prevent domestic violence. What Matthew did was truely heroic and for that, I have the most respect for him., more then I did before reading this. It's so horrible to think that he had the shit kicked out of him for being a good person (which is rare these days). I don't pray, but I pray that he gets better real soon. This is what you call a true hero. A man who had no regard for his own safety, only that of others, and I hope he recovers soon.

I'm sure, however, that Matthew would be proud of the vast majority of comments being made. As horrific as this incident is, look at how it's bringing people together. Fans of the band, and non-fans alike have all joined in support of a man who truly deserves all the respect a person can give. Perhaps humanity does still have a chance.

Matthew is a hero.

I had the honour to meet him twice. He looked after me and my friend at 2am in Brixton, chatting and laughing with us like he'd known us for years.

I think the best measure of what a great person Matthew is is that there are so many people who admire and applaud his actions. He is one of the most genuine people I have ever met, and more than that he is also brave.

Get well soon, Matthew. You promised you'd see me and my friends again and I won't let you break that promise. Love and good vibes to all your family and friends. <3

I've seen ML live twice, and both times they have been amazing. Attics to Eden is one of my all time favourite albums. I'm deeply saddened by this news, how could anyone do such a thing. Our thoughts go out to his family and friends, and wish him a speedy recovery.

Wow, this has stunned and shocked me. I feel such disgust at what this bastard has done, and yet, I'm so proud of Matthew for his efforts, for putting his own personal safety aside for another being. He just does not in the slightest deserve the injuries he has received. It's such a sad story, but I'm praying that he makes it through okay. <3

I'm not a big madina lake fan - i infact, have never even heard a song by them.

Matthew acted heroic in this situation, how many other guys can you honestly say would do what he did? I hope that he's better soon<3. This just clarify's for me that there is some good in the world, its just shit when the physco woman beater attempts to take it.

Whether you're a fan or not, what Matthew did is truly selfless in jumping to the need of someone being attacked, truly a hero and I hope and pray they catch the lowlife who left him and did this to him.

I've been a fan for a few years and was lucky enough to see them on their last UK tour in March/April this year and Matthew is a truly lovely guy who had the time to chat to fans and make them feel like friends, making sure everyone had a lovely night. The band have a real softspot for the UK and feels like a second home to them, the fact something like this can happen to one of lifes true nice guys is real sad.

My love and best wishes go out to Matthew, his family, bandmates and fellow fans around the world :)

I've loved Madina Lake for years, but I've never had the balls to go talk to them at shows before. I've heard he's one of the nicest blokes about.

I hope to meet this wonderful guy one day, it's horrific that something like this could happen to someone who was only looking to defend a helpless woman, I know I never could in that situation but his bravery and altruism is definitely an inspiration. He's a hero and it gives ye hope that there's more like him x x

I really dont like Madina Lake, like to the point I despise most of their stuff, but I dont have anything against them personally (infact from what i've read they're really nice people,w hich makes this even worse). This is just horrific what's happened. I really hope he makes a full recovery. He really is a brave and good-natured person, and the guy who did this deserves to get everything that comes to him.

I hung out with these guys a few years ago before they got super big here and were on tour supporting paramore. really really sadens me to hear this :( each member of that band is a genuine lovely person.
