Madina Lake frontman Nathan Leone issued an update over night about the condition of his twin brother, Madina Lake bassist Matthew Leone, who was severely beaten after intervening in a domestic dispute.
"I just wanted to take a second to thank you all for your overwhelming love and support," wrote Nathan. "For those who don't know, a few nights ago my twin brother and best friend Matthew was severely injured while trying to stop a man who was beating his wife on the street one block away from my apartment [in Chicago]. Matthew was all alone and managed to save the girl but got beaten pretty badly in the process," he continued. "The couple then left him laying unconscious in the middle of the street. Both have been subsequently arrested. Matthew is currently in the hospital recovering from brain surgery, a fractured skull, [his jaw is] broken in two places and [he has] a broken nose. The doctors have removed a part of his skull to allow for the swelling in his brain to subside and we're currently waiting for leakage from a haematoma to stop.
"After three days the prognosis is looking better," he added. "I've been next to him throughout the entire process and as impossible as it is to see him go through it, I've seen a strength I didn't know existed and I'm so proud of him. As of this morning [Thursday, July 1] he recognised me and is able to have minor conversation and move around. When something like this happens people are often inclined to despise humanity but in this case, the outpouring of love and support from friends, family, fans, neighbours, etc. has far overshadowed that notion and has proven to us that although there are certainly some evil people in the world, there are far more amazing people.
"Thank you all again, we love and appreciate you more than you'll know."
In an interview with MTV news yesterday, Nathan said that he and his brother don't have health insurance, and, due to the serious nature of Matthew's condition, the bills could be hundreds of thousands of dollars. However Nathan said that the twins will cross that bridge when they come to it.
"It's a horrible coincidence, because as we've been on tour, it's been hard to manage bills," he said. "And then you get home, and you start writing again, and the bills just become too hard to catch up with. So, no, we don't have insurance. But we'll deal with that when we have to."

the state police force should definitely help foot the medical bills... bravery and initiative to help crime, and particularly prevent domestic abuse, should be applauded and rewarded.

I don't even listen to Medina Lake (I'm going to check them out), but what happened is just wrong on so many levels. Matthew is a true hero, and I hope those cowards involved spend the rest of their miserable lives in jail for attempted murder! As a musician myself, I can see where the guys are coming from not having insurance... many of the public aren't aware of the VERY small salary most touring musicians make. This guy needs all the help he can get, so if anyone can... PLEASE help Matthew and his family out! We're praying for ya Matthew!
My love goes out to Nathan and the rest of the family and the band. It's good to hear he's getting better each day and I hope he makes a full recovery. This really shocked me when I first heard what happened and still in a bit of shock about it as well.
All he was trying to do was to help and then some son of a bitch attacked someone who was only trying to help. It sickens me that people would do that to people who only want to try and help and be a good samaritan. I cried watching that video especially when they showed his horrific injuries :'(

Not a huge Madina Lake fan but what has happened to Matthew is horrific! He is a sweet guy who I have met a few times and this didn't deserve to happen to him. Not many people would stop to help but that is the type of guy Matthew is, always looking out for others.
I hope Matthew makes a full recovery and the guy responsible is caught.

matthew is an angel in diguse thankfully god diecided to allow him to walk this earth with the monsters that live, i believe he is a true hero my heart goes out to him, nathan, autumn and the rest of his friends and family and i hope that he'll be well again soon.
there has been a great saddest throughout this tradic incident but aleast there is the happiness of knowing that his on the mend.
hopefully he'll be bouncing around with just enthusasim as before i know i'll be standing there proud to be a madina lake fan.

My Love goes out to the Leone family and the band... Matthew you acted like a hero but are having to pay a very horrific price. It is so sweet that Nathan is going to stick by him as he starts the recovery process... Matthew is in my prayers and so is Nathan and the rest of the family. Just to know Matthew would put himself back in that position just to help someone else that is a true hero right there.

I was absolutely disgusted when I heard about this. He did an extremely brave thing getting between this monster and the ungrateful woman. I have the utmost respect for him. I saw Madina Lake on the Kerrang tour in Bristol and very much enjoyed their set. I wish him the speediest recovery and hope he gets back to playing bass very soon!

I have been a big fan of madina lake since they started and I know from meeting matthew that he is a total sweetheart. What that guy did to him was cruel and disgusting and should be sent to jail for not only taking out matthew but for beating his wife as well. I am so glad that Matthew has woken up and is able to recognize his brother and is able to speak. It was so horrible finding out this tragic news that it brought me to tears.

Tasha I doubt Madina Lake will be playing any gigs for the foreeeable future. Matthew is gonna take a while to recover and Nathan wont want to be away from him while he recovers.
