The Dillinger Escape Plan frontman death hoax

The internet was awash with rumours this past Friday (July 23) that The Dillinger Escape Plan frontman Greg Puciato had passed away.

However, unlike most death hoaxes which are started by malicious people who aren't fans of the band or artist in question, the rumour was actually started by The Dillinger Escape Plan themselves.

The band, who are currently on the Vans Warped Tour, Tweeted at 7:08 PM:

"Time to storm the main stage of warped in 30 min. Greg Puciato R.I.P."

The Tweet also prompted someone to change the band's Wikipedia page to say that Puciato "had died quietly in his sleep" during the night.

However, the band's ruse was rumbled when Every Time I Die frontman Keith Buckley told his Twitter followers just over an hour later:

"If Greg Puciatto is dead, than his corpse just played a great set on main stage today."

Silly boys!

There are some things that are funny jokes, this isn't really one of them, especially for us fans who've heard someone in our favourite band has died and wished it was a bloody rumour, only for it to be true.

A stupid, pathetic and disrespectful stunt, considering how many musicians have passed away recently. Many people didn't find it very funny when Peter Steele's death was 'faked' as a stunt, and it made it all the more difficult to accept his passing when it actually happened.

It doesn't even look like a stunt, read between the lines people.

Surely they were implying that he was gonna get so wrecked with his stage presence and audience participation that he may not make it out of their set alive.

I saw that tweet at the time and thought nothing of it. The Wiki entry was clearly fake as no credible sources were cited.

I hate them.
Funny how them and Avenged hate each other,
and now they fake their lead singers death.
That quote about how he "died" is very similar to the actual quote ZV posted about Jimmy's death.

I don't even like the band, but imagine how their fans must of felt.
I wish Jimmy's death was a prank or a stunt, but it's not and I don't think it's fair to toy with your fans emotions like that
I know it might sound harsh. But I wouldn't care any way.

Face it this band need to do all they can do for attention..I

think the fact that someone put on the wiki "passed away in his sleep" was eerily similar to the way The Rev passed away ..then again like whoever said " The Wiki entry was clearly fake as no credible sources were cited."...means i guess you cant blame them for that.

I think even if it is somthing that was taken out of context ...its still a pretty crude thing to do.. Especially the tragic deaths that have been happening recently...

WHAT FUCKING RETARDS!!!!!!

I hope they all suffer fucking horrible deaths like drowning, because I will laugh.

I like Pantera, Slipknot and Avenged Sevenfold. So I can only imagine how much hatred they feel right now.

Have long painful deaths. Dillinger Escape Plan

It said they were storming the stage in 30 minutes though, who would they have done it with...Mike Patton!?

I can think of many worse things tbh and it just seems like any excuse to bring in The Rev to the argument. (I was gutted, but seriously, I don't know the guy personally).

If you don't follow the band on Twitter, and you don't like Greg Pucatio enough to be shocked by his death, then I don't see the relevancy. If it's a cry for attention as some people are putting it, surely you're fuelling the attention?

Controvery for a band that sells itself on original music is never a bad thing for them. ;)

I agree with the person who mentioned disrespect about other band members passing away this year. A7X lost Jimmy and played their first show without him yesterday. DEP hates A7X. Regardless if you personally like A7X or not, it's still extremely disrespectful, distasteful and just not funny or clever. I'm glad Chris Pennie left them and joined a band with class (Coheed).

Liam also posted it on his twitter Before the dep twitter but afterwards had a reaction as if he was hacked so I don't think the band initially started it you douches

ok to all the retards out there, if he had died i really doubt they would of actually played the set.
As what has already been said READ BETWEEN THE LINES!!!!

cant wait to see them in brum same day as A7X, DEP will be so much better than that

You lot are fucking idiots, they didn't mean for their fans to think he was actually dead.

It's got fuck all to do with Avenged Sevenfold or any of the rest of guys who died. You're all just fuckwits.

Posted by Aiden | July 26, 2010 12:37 PM | Reply to this

I love the Dillinger guys. They have the balls to take the piss out of something serious... Which makes life more fun and entertaining. The time to be serious is when you're dead, it would of sucked of Greg had actually died though.

I don't understand why people need to be so pathetic as to bring up the Rev's death on here. I mean, honestly, don't you have people actually in YOUR life to moan about? No? Oh well, I guess you'll have to go on facebook and talk about he was the only person in the world to complete you or something.

I mean, honestly, I don't neccesarily agree with what they did, but it shows how stupidly people take Twitter for a good start...

But yeah, DEP <3

This is a really bad joke,

I actually like both bands and I still gonna love them both, however I have to say that I loose respect for a band when they do things like that :(

R.I.P The Rev !!!

That's a pretty fucked up and sick thing to do. I agree with everyone who says this is disrespect to people who have passed away like Jimmy Sullivan, Paul Gray and others who have recently passed. This just shows how pathetic people can be. And also @ A Goth - How the fuck is bringing up Jimmy Sullivan's death pathetic? Do you actually realise how much his death has affected some people? Sure it's not gonna be everyone in the world but have a little fucking respect for who it has affected.

Lets hope he get killed on the way home.

After all the deaths in metal music its disgraceful that this sad excuse for a band (that cant play for shit anyway) should do a hoax like this its just sick.

I think that if he did pass away now no one would give a shit after what he did people like him dont deserve the gift of life.

Posted by David | July 26, 2010 1:59 PM | Reply to this

Balls. Thats what it takes to do this

Dillinger have had better drummers than the rev. Sure, it's a big loss and all but compared to drummers like Mike Portnoy, Chris Adler and Sean Reinert, he wasn't that good.

Anyways, Dillinger could blow A7X out of the water anyday with their live shows.

Boo hoo.

To be honest too much is being made out of a this. How can you call that a stunt? Granted if a press release or any other effort to make this seem real was created I'd keep quiet, but a tweet? Come on!

DEP FTW.

Posted by BobSaget | July 26, 2010 2:21 PM | Reply to this

Have you fuckwits realized they were hacked?

Fucking metalcore kid morons. DEP fucking rule. You forget Kerrang voted Ire Works as a better album than A7X selftitled. So fuck off.

Posted by Milk Lizard | July 26, 2010 4:08 PM | Reply to this

The original tweet was less likely to fool people than the amendment to the Wiki page, which was in pretty poor taste regardless of whoever did it, be it the band or some random person.

Posted by AngelM16 | July 26, 2010 4:15 PM | Reply to this

Typical of people to turn it into an A7X vs TDEP thread. Idiots.

Not sure the original tweet implies Puciato was 'dead', if you read between the lines, but not the greatest idea nonetheless. Brings Peter Steele to mind, when he hoaxed his death to promote one of Type O Negative's records. When he really died people had to do a double take.

But still...not the greatest idea, but some of you people need to get off your high horses. TDEP don't need the extra press, and you wishing death upon another band is pot calling the kettle black, as the old adage goes.

Posted by Peter | July 26, 2010 5:15 PM | Reply to this

the tweet implied that TDEP were just abut to go and fucking smash it on the main stage, the reference to death was nothing more than a metaphor. end of thread.
long live TDEP cos lets be honest they probably did kill it, as they do week in week out.

@ Shannon

It's pathetic because this article has fuck all to do with The Rev. I'm a big A7X fan, and I was a fan of the band (though I always have and thought he was an average drummer compared to most of what I listen to) and still am a fan. But this article isn't about The Rev. People bringing it up imply that every little piece of news in the world was somehow affected or directed towards the Rev...when this obviously wasn't.

Posted by A Goth | July 27, 2010 11:20 AM | Reply to this

they probably didn't mean for people to take it so seriously but there are some people who will believe anything and to be honest it was a little sillyof them to put something like that but it looks like they took it all with good humor

Posted by charlotte | July 27, 2010 7:16 PM | Reply to this

This is what happens when people can't read or comprehend anything... CLEARLY it had nothing to do with him dying literally... just that they had JUST written about the show.

They could have very well said "he's so dead" ... would people take THAT the wrong way?!?

so sad...

on an unrelated not.. it's not 'could of' it's 'could HAVE' geez!

Posted by Mary | July 28, 2010 3:12 AM | Reply to this

@ A Goth
I'm not trying to imply that every single death hoax or whatever is directed towards Jimmy Sullivan's death or anyone else who has passed because I know it's not. I just really disagree with the fact that DEP said Greg Puciato had passed. I'm a fan of DEP, but in my opinion, this was something the totally shouldn't have done and I disagree with them doing this and it could offend people who have been affected with the death of Jimmy Sullivan, Paul Gray, Pete Steele ect. :)

Posted by Shannon | July 29, 2010 4:47 PM | Reply to this

Not funny, not cool, not original and not clever. Not really a lot going for this hox, is there?

It's disgusting, and I've seen the way comments like this are labelled ... but hell, I'm going to say this anyway. Regardless of what anyone else thinks, it IS disrespectful to the likes of Pantera, Avenged Sevenfold and Slipknot. To anyone who's lost a close friend, or someone they worked so closely with it was like being family.

I can see the funny side in a fair amount of twisted things, but this, I can't, purely because it's either a cry for attention or a cynical statement (and I usually like cynical statements) that is clearly lacking the cynicism.

Posted by Torii | August 8, 2010 11:13 AM | Reply to this

The point is not bringing up Jimmy Sullivan's death, it's the point of it being disrespectful. Hell, if someone turned around to me and joked that their grandfather had just died of lung cancer, then I'd be fucking pissed, because I find that disrespectful. Basically, what these guys did is just disrespectful to any band who has lost a bandmate.

So, it wasn't cool, it wasn't funny and it wasn't clever.
