The Slits' frontwoman Ari Up, sadly passed away yesterday (Wednesday, October 20) after battling a "serious illness." She was 48.
Up, real name Arianna Forster, formed the pioneering all-female punk band in 1976 when she was just 14. The Slits were largely credited as paving the way for bands like The Runaways, Hole, L7, Veruca Salt and The Distillers.
Her stepfather, Sex Pistols and PIL frontman John Lydon, posted the following statement on his website last night.
"John and [his wife] Nora have asked us to let everyone know that Nora's daughter Arianna (AKA Ari-Up) died today (Wednesday, October 20) after a serious illness. She will be sadly missed."
