Gene Simmons: "Sue file sharers. Take their homes and their cars"

Kiss frontman Gene Simmons attacked illegal file sharers during a speech at an entertainment industry conference in France earlier this week.

Speaking at MIPCOM in Cannes, Simmons instructed copyright owners to "be litigious" and "sue everybody."

"Take their homes, take their cars, don't let anybody cross that line," he added. "The music industry was asleep at the wheel and didn't have the balls to sue every fresh-faced, freckle-faced college kid who downloaded material. And so now we're left with hundreds of thousands of people without jobs."

Well he certainly lives up to being a twat...

Whey he's got plenty of money, donate some to the jobless if he's so bothered. Tinternet is literally the new medium, as much as i hate sayin it, but it's true. It's the reason there sre so many new bands etc poppin up everywhere, cos they get discovered on the net and passed around to get the name out.

I have to agree with CJ. I download music illegally but that's because I have no money of my own yet but if I did I would buy it on CD prefer to have a hard copy

I used to download illegaly but got fined $512 for downloading one song haha

Posted by Ali | October 7, 2010 2:19 PM | Reply to this

Gene Simmons has a point but also, Downloads are are good way to advertise because serious music lovers will support their favorite bands by going to the Lives and purchasing the CDs and the Merch. My daughter found Dir en Grey on the net and I became addicted to them. I have bought every Single, CD, DVD they have ever made. Literally thousands of dollars worth!

Posted by Mireille Dumoulin | October 7, 2010 3:00 PM | Reply to this

Even before the net there was piracy. Copying off friends or buying from a market stall. Gets annoying all these artisits bitching about how hard things are when everyone else is struggling to keep a roof over their heads. Not like these artists dont cash in with merchandise and over priced concert tickets. The more their music gets about the more people buy the merch and tickets

I don't know what he's getting pissed off about. Its's not like anybody will have been downloading any of his shit

Its hard to take this twat seriously while he still wears his heels, facepaint and matching gimpsuit.

I dont see whats wrong with piracy sounds fun big boats ,cannons parrots and eye patches sounds great.

Don't get me wrong here, I respect anyone who can play a musical instrument, simply because they've taken the time to learn it.

But, let's be honest, the only musicians who bother with people who download are the ones who need songwriters, auto-tuned vocals, take years to put an album out [GN'R being my only exception] and have many "Farewell Tours" under their belt.

In short, they all anger Jesus.

My comment was changed by Kerrap just because I called Gene Simmons a Jew! nobheads

Posted by Nozzy Ozbourne | October 7, 2010 5:02 PM | Reply to this

Fucking right why should bands spend thousands of pounds making there recored to earn a living and have millions of people have it for nothing. Sobody needs to fucking do something about. it It's ruined the whole point in being signed to a recored lable.

Musicians want their music to be heard. Businessmen want their music to make them money. It's obvious which of the two Gene is. He is just a very poor person who need some more millions dollars to spend on nothing, don't you pity him?

I buy mp3s and cd's from bands that I like or love. I won't just download loads and loads of albums illegally just cause I can. However, I agree completely with Father O Flannigan. I can't imagine someone like Greg Graffin from Bad Religion coming out and saying this. It's just the whole 'Rockstar fashion' to earn the big bucks.

Buy the albums you like, get the odd random song online somewhere. I don't agree with Itunes prices for legal mp3 downloads either. Will just push people even more to illegally download.

I agree that established musicians such as Kiss do have lots of money, however new bands of this day and age find it a lot harder to bring in income. People forget, or don't understand that with the industry as it is at the moment, there are lawyers, labels, publishers, techs, managers and pr pluggers taking an extortionate percentage of all money made, and this is only after break even. Touring and merch generates most of the income, but this requires a lot of money to be made for the artists to get anything out of it. Songs are the artist's property, you wouldn't have a builder build a house and then not pay him for it, so yeah, Gene has a point in that bands trying to make it these days are having a lot of shit thrown their way due to downloading.

To be honest , they hardly get any money making albums. There main money comes from actually doing tours and stuff. As well he is soo loaded why does he care? i dont have hardly any money. My money goes to my travel to college everyday to make a career for myself. A true fact illegal downloading is actually keeping the prices down thats inculding movies. I dont want to pay a load of money for one album. Then get bored with it cause i listened to loads of times. Music is my life. I live of music.

If he doesn't like it go tour again you greedy wanker.

I actually download music illegaly and must say if i like the ablum i will go out and buy it.

But some of material bands are releasing now adays they expect you to buy crap! And thats just not on, they will release one or two songs on a full ablum and the rest of it totally crap. Prime examples of ablums getting worse.

Linkin Park (last 2 ablums are awful and i can't bring myself to listen to them), Avenged Sevenfold(nightmare is awful sounds like their old one), Disturbed (one decent song on Asylum), Eminem (but after 2 crap ablums released a outstanding one) 30 seconds to mars new ablums sucks.

Thats just some groups, once they make it big they forget about the core of their fans and expect these people to buy crap and they wonder why people download music for free?

The ablums i listed above would cost me 84 quid if i was to buy them but for what a total of 8 possible songs i would like across 96 tracks. If they took time in making ablums i'm sure sales would increase but hey thats my point of view and the reason why i download music. And i just brought young guns ablum after downloading it and must say well worth the money every track is a music listen.

Posted by Mark | October 7, 2010 9:49 PM | Reply to this

@Mark, the only decent badn that you listed is A7X. I agree, all of the other bands are shit. Disturbed was once good, but they lost it the Indestructable, Linkin Park is just a disgrace, 30STM are awful too, and you even mentioning Eminem on this website is a complete disgrace.
Yes, I download my music illegally, but most artists and bands don't give a shit. Hell, most of them illegally download music themselves! I don't know what Simmons is bitching for....oh yeah, that's right, there music has become overrated and the band itself it starting to become outdated? Hmmm....

Posted by Alyssa | October 7, 2010 10:04 PM | Reply to this

@Alyssa,
If you have noticed Kerrang isn't what it once was and Eminem was just a example so nothing wrong with using examples of trying to make my point. Half of the bands i put forward are just examples off people or bands releasing crap.

Even Slipknot done it with The Subliminal Verses, Stone Sour Come What(Ever) May, Silverchair ablums after Frogstomp and freakshow was a disgrace. Never liked kiss and never will and totally agree with the rest of what you said :).

Posted by Mark | October 7, 2010 10:49 PM | Reply to this

Mark, you can't even spell "album." You don't deserve an opinion.

Posted by Your big left toe | October 8, 2010 2:44 AM | Reply to this

I would buy a CD if it wasn't so expensive. Really, so instead of making 3 million, they could make 1 million.
Hard copy is way cooler.. but some just don't have the means :(

Posted by Mir Mir | October 8, 2010 4:23 AM | Reply to this

My friend asked me the other day 'why is there such a load of crap in the charts? who buys that stuff?'

I answered 'thats simple, smarter people have realised that they dont HAVE to buy music and thus download it for free, while the mainstream heard of sheep that follow popular trends and believe what they hear on the news and read in the papers BUY music all the time because they are told that downloading is baaaaaad.'

Simple minds buy simple music - ie what is in the charts right now.

Thats my theory anyway. Oh.. and who does Gene Simmons think he is anyway? Talking about normal hardworking people who struggle every day, well heres a message to Gene:

Get back in your multimillion dollar mansion you dried up has been, you cant treat normal people like they are there just to hand out money to you. People will give you their money if they think you are deserving of it. You obviously dont appeal to anybody these days and need to come back down to earth.

There are alot of people in the industry the money gets diveded between, but most of these poor saps are earning feck all and if you worked out the hours they put in are getting minimum wage sometimees less (I know some of these people). Buy cds, sue everyone that downloads and the same people will remain poor and the fat cats get richer. Lack of fair distribution of monies.

I honestly believe that most people would become more fussy with music and less likely to follow the bands if they paid out £10 each time they wanted some new tunes. Most albums have three good tracksand the rests dire. With the internet it's a promotional tool, people are hearing the music and if it's good these artists get the big tours and money from endorsements. The other thing that annoys me is legal downloads costing pretty much the same as a shop bought cd. Production costs are lower and the buyer loses out on a physical possesion.

End of the day people control it and there are too many doing it to be able to stop it. If the albums were cheaper to start with more would buy end of. up to the record companies to make the cds more attractive. I like to get the albums that come with a extra dvd of live footage or previous music vids.

As for the starting out artists, all jobs start with long hours and crap pay. That's life, most people are happy to just have a job in the present climate. Not happy with it get another job that pays more lol. Lilley bloody allen another moaner "Not enough money in music" well piss off then and stop moaning about how hard done by you are.

Posted by Mart | October 8, 2010 10:49 AM | Reply to this

Well... gene simmons ! I ll buy your albums the day your shows will be a little bit less expensive ! I paid 705 E to see you in paris. with that price the less you could do is give your album with the ticket. Mr Asshole.

Posted by Jesus saves | October 8, 2010 12:58 PM | Reply to this

I would never download illegaly. That is so selfish. I am 13 and have no job. My mum isn't rich, yet I save up. No money, no music.

Posted by Emma | October 8, 2010 4:01 PM | Reply to this

in all fairness, it doesn't matter to the bands that are on Kerrang!'s web pages anyway coz they're all rolling it. And Gene don't have a go at the downloaders, the people that upload it are to blame. The downloaders are just taking advantage. And if CD's were just a little bit cheaper then maybe more people would buy them. I mean I am not gonna buy Disturbed's Asylum limited edition with a tin for an extra tenner when i can get the standard Cd for 7 quid. It's just not worth it

it's a losing fight...who needs filesharing when you've got a portable hard drive and a bunch of mates... I support bands by showing up to their concerts, whole industry needs to wake up and realise they've missed the boat on this one.
