Kiss bassist's websites forced offline by "freckle-faced college kids"

Following last week's news story where Gene Simmons instructed members of the entertainment industry to sue illegal file sharers, the same "fresh-faced, freckle-faced college kids" he threatened to take to court have brought down his two official websites.

Speaking at MIPCOM in Cannes, last week, Simmons instructed copyright owners to "be litigious" and "sue everybody."

"Take their homes, take their cars, don't let anybody cross that line," he added. "The music industry was asleep at the wheel and didn't have the balls to sue every fresh-faced, freckle-faced college kid who downloaded material. And so now we're left with hundreds of thousands of people without jobs."

In response to his comments, www.simmonsrecords.com and www.genesimmons.com
were taken down last night (Thursday, October 14) by a hacking collective called Anonymous.

The word 'pwn3d' springs to mind.

"by a hacking collective called Anonymous."

4chan? The people on that site can pretty much do anything other than get a life.

That comment was just stupid, if Simmons had any concept of the internet whatsoever he would expect this to happen. What does it matter to him anyway? KISS makes all their money from concerts and merchandise it's not as if the songs themselves are all that great.

You're all pathtic.
You wouln't steal from a shop, so why steal music.
It's readily available and not that expensive.

And when he says people lose money, i'm pretty sure he doesn't mean himself. Maybe he has a heart and is looking out for people around him.

I agree with him, take your house and your money. Serves you right for stealing

@kirsty
LOL we're all pathetic?
my dear, I believe you're pathetic for saying that 'we' are. He wants his money! That's all this is! And we want the music. As long as we're enjoying the music, most bands wont have a problem with downloads just so long as their fans can enjoy what they do as much as they do themselves.
maybe you should just think about things before you say them.
so surely youtube is stealing? broadcasting/streaming/whatever songs that aren't yours? just think about it for a moment, i'm sure you 'steal' music too.

Posted by rhianne | October 15, 2010 5:31 PM | Reply to this

Personally. I dont illegally download music as it is my choice not to as I find it wrong, but I see where people are coming from. Yes, its wrong. And yes, Its illegal. But you see. The music industry still makes billions of pounds each year from people buying music, if kiss actually released some half decent music this century then maybe people would buy it if it was worth it, seen as its not, power to the people who illegally download kiss as gene simmons and kiss are greedy bastards who are only still in music to make money, not good music. If, as he is implying. They are "putting people out of jobs" then who runs the illegal sites? People whos job it is to run them. also, by the term he uses as "we must sue" he means "Ill pay a top lawyer to sue them with the money i made out of stupid memorabilia and by SELLING RECORDS"

Posted by Gerard Way | October 15, 2010 5:37 PM | Reply to this

First up, don't call me 'my dear'. I'm not you dear and never will be.
Second, no I don't steal. I have better things to do with my time than sit on youtube all day... I have a job!
Thirdly, although bands like people to listen to their music, at the end of the day it's their JOB and they have BILLS to pay. I'm sure every band would prefer people to pay for what they listen to so they can have a wage. Money makes the world go round wheter people like it or not. Gene may have more of it than the rest of us, but smaller bands don't, and they need every penny they can get.
How many bands do you think have gone down the pan because they couldn't afford to put everything into it anymore?
I'd say more than you could ever count with your simple little mind.

@ eric cartman - go fatass! lol

maybe if kiss had concentrated on makin half decent music like they used too instead of bringing out ridiculous merchandise ie kiss coffins - (who in their right mind would want that?)

i think file sharing and downloading of music is a great to hear new music. i download both legally and illegally, if i hear a track by a band i hear on the radio or by word of mouth, i'll look them up online and download the albums, if i like it i will purchase the psychical copy, cd/vinyl. thats how i have over 250 records.

guys like gene simmons are out of touch with the regular joes that work in the real world. all he is worried about is how much he is getting in royalties to add to his millions.

Posted by mark | October 15, 2010 7:38 PM | Reply to this

i personally dont download music legally or illegally i prefer having the cd i can understand bands need to make money so kind of get genes point of view but these days when music is available for free i can see why alot of people download it illegally it saves them money and it seems like a victimless crime to them the music industry will have a hard time stopping illegal downloads now

Posted by acki | October 15, 2010 8:01 PM | Reply to this

It would help if instead of bands releasing any old crap then maybe people would buy more albums. The basic formula it seems for most bands of today is to release one or two decent singles and the rest of an album is boring filler. Seriously when was the last time anyone could say a truly classic album was released in the opinion of both music reviewers and the general public?

@Kirsty - you don't have time to sit around on youtube but you have time to argue on a music website? Poor show.
Such a shame, you had a good point but just failed at being civilised.

I agree with you. You make a good point. If my band had more money we could've kept going.
Some people just have to hope that there is still kindness in the human race, that gene really was looking out for other peoples interests.
But you lot all know gene personallly apparently, you know what he's thinking and his motives foe speaking.
Give people are break, they're not all bad...

I don't want to get into a huge flaming war, but just remember a few things:

- If people download illegally, and hence don't spend the money on music, it's not like the money just vanishes. It'll still get spent and hence benefit other people outside the music industry.

- Most of the smaller bands that get anywhere, get places because of the internet. So essentially, with the internet comes filesharing, but also a greater variety of music.

IMO ultimately filesharing is just the ugly side of something that is overall beneficial to music.

you probably didn't have enough money to keep going because you were not that good? just saying, may not be true, but that is probably why most bands break up, not because people were illegally downloading music.

Posted by cory | October 16, 2010 4:36 PM | Reply to this

i'd have thought kerrang would agree with simmons here? yes, he is a millionaire as a result of music, but illegally downloading music kills hundreds of bands, and prevents hundreds more from getting record deals. the music industry is, as its name suggests, a business, and so if a band makes no money for its label because all its "fans" illegally download their music, then the label will naturally drop them. wealthy musicians like simmons are phenomenally rare, and invariably had to serve the music industry for decades before the cash started rolling in, and that was when the only way to get music was to buy it. in today's world where the majority of music most people own is illegally downloaded, what hope is there for any bands, save a very lucky few, to stand the test of time under any record label? you don't have to look far to find examples, look at Reuben, they were a very strong candidate for the best band to come out of britain in the past decade, and that band was forced to die an untimely death due to money alone.
so all you cretins who are standing up for illegal downloading, on a music website, really don't have any right to an opinion on the subject.

Posted by Papa Lazarou | October 16, 2010 7:38 PM | Reply to this

I download music first, THEN buy it if it's actually something i'd want, and pay to see them live if they're on tour. Usually that's the case, but that's because most of the stuff I listen to is from bands that deserve it. Kiss don't. Good on you Anonymous, Gene is a fucking idiot for some of the things he's said.

Did anyone else see on the news a couple of weeks ago that internet providers are keeping tabs on illegal downloads and sending the information off to whoever...i can't remember if it was the police or what... But they're gonna start procecuting for illegal downloads.
Oviously the name 'illegal downloads' suggest they're against the law.
Hope the fines are bigger than the music is worth, will make you think twice about stealing music...

To be honest, I do not think Simmons is complaining when millions of people are paying £40 each to see them. He still sees the cash anyway.

It's about time he retires and decides to back down..instead of thinking he's 18 again. Annoying. At the end of the day It's paid back by gigs and concerts one way or another.

Are you all fucking stupid?

You think this is about money? He's got enough money to last him for the rest of his life, and probably another lifetime aswell. Believe it or not they're not all like the lot of you where it's only money that matters.

Fact is, it's so easy to do, that's why people do it, but it is illegal, ans is against the copyright law, it's their fault for not closing down on it sooner

and to the stupid little college freaks... LOL you are fails, get a life, All you of.

Posted by Lee Johnson | October 18, 2010 8:11 AM | Reply to this

Im with kirsty tbh. Although i cant quite see why albums can cost anywhere from 3 to 15 pounds... if they can sell it at £3 why not sell all albums that cheap, more people would buy them then. also to 'anonynous' get a freaking life, or better still a girlfriend (not that you'd be able to)

It does make me laugh when people say things like "all he wants is money" being a musician is a job just like any other, anyone that says they ain't in it to sell records and make money is a fucking liar!

that said, saying to take peoples homes is a little bit far, i think he defiantly deserved a hack or 2

some of you need to chill, sound like your about to cry over this topic.

if u get albums earlier than release date and is faster than going shop you cant blame people for dloading, its as much stealing as copying a cd to tape and so on like back in the day.

Kiss make so much money from merchandise at least 80% profit and had there main years of fame during the time buying CDs were the only way to get music.
So him speaking about this just comes of as arrogant and moneygrabing. as a musician myself its not about the money, its about creating music, touring and geting recognition for what you do, the second its about money and sales go join a pop band and sing songs that appeal to kids, as there parents will buy them the CDs

@johnbraaaaa When your signed to a big label you need to get the money in or they drop you. Even really passionate musicians reaise this, people who dont are deluded
