Guitar Hero 2005 - 2011

Kerrang! is sad to report that the popular rock video game series Guitar Hero is no more.

After lacklustre sales of Guitar Hero 5 and Guitar Hero: Warriors Of Rock, the game's makers Activision announced last night (Wednesday, February 9) that they were pulling the plug on the series.

Guitar Hero's sister title, DJ Hero, is rumoured to be next for the chop.

Posted by Ian | February 10, 2011 10:39 AM | Reply to this

why's it stupid?
it's a crap game that could never improve itself they shoulda cut it 5 years ago

Posted by ayyyyyy | February 10, 2011 10:43 AM | Reply to this

Guitars Heros has been getting shit since the second one.
Why is Kerrang reporting it like someones died? Slow news day aye?

At last. You can only make the same game again and again until people have had enough or lose interest. They were flogging a dead horse after GH3.

Posted by Ross | February 10, 2011 10:49 AM | Reply to this

Gotta be honest there's barely any good songs on them, maybe they should make a last guitar hero and make the setlist like requests from people that way more people will play it if they know there are songs the chose, no one can complain about shit songs

Posted by Jon | February 10, 2011 10:53 AM | Reply to this

GH3 was the best one, mebs Metallica was decent cos it had some sort of story to it and it's METALLICA for god sake.
But it's like any other annual game like Fifa or WWE games, they're dying cos you can't do anything new with them.
Oh well, it's the end of an era really, music jus lost an output to an audience.

If it was because of poor sales of GH5 and Warriors Of Rock, they shouldn't have made it so shit ;O

*lacklustre*

Also, they announced at the same time that DJ Hero was axed too......

Awful jounalism, again........

Good to be honest. It died after GH3 to me anyways

Big shame. Has been coming with the lack of DLC in recent months. Shows that they only care about call of duty games and not about music. Rock Band it is then.

I'm pretty sad about this. Warriors of Rock was definitely the best one since GH2 (excluding Metallica), so I thought that it might go on to get better again.
And yeah, Steve's right, DJ Hero was axed in the same announcement. I didn't mind DJ Hero either, it's quite a shame that they're both gone. Ah well, there's always Rock Band.

Also, I blame Call of Duty (more like Balls of Duty/Call of Pooty/etc).

im pretty sure all they've said is that the next Guitar Hero that was planned to be released is being pulled... not the franchise.

ROCK BAND WINS! YES!

Posted by Purple Demon | February 10, 2011 1:05 PM | Reply to this

in all fairness i think this might be a bad thing. As much as the games get a little boring they inspire people to pick up the guitar in reality (even slash said it in the Slash Classic Rock Pack), and it inspired me to pick up the guitar so.

Posted by Michael | February 10, 2011 1:57 PM | Reply to this

It's a stupid game. Instead of spending hours pressing the colours learn how to play a real guitar.

Posted by Alex | February 10, 2011 1:57 PM | Reply to this

im sorry but this is not really music it may feature 'rock music' but when kids play it they get excited because the got a 100 note streak, rock music has died i thought this was suposed to be a metal magazine

I'm gutted to hear that they're pulling the plug on Guitar Hero, t'was a decent game.

Mind you, if people put in the time they do on Guitar Hero on a REAL guitar then just think how amazing they'd be on a real six string!

Posted by T Bone | February 10, 2011 3:00 PM | Reply to this

Although they were decent games, they were churned out so fast for a quick cash in, the last few were god awful abominations of games.

For the same £70 you spent on a plastic guitar and game, you could have gotten a REAL acoustic guitar, or secondhand electric one, why buy a cheap simulation when you can actually buy the real fucking thing.

@andrew salisbury

Has Kerrang ever been a "metal" magazine ?

Posted by british cheese | February 10, 2011 3:09 PM | Reply to this

You guys should realize that they're pulling it for more than just one reason. They may do it until it becomes 'retro' and reboot it after a few years for the 'nostalgia' factor, selling more and yet again plaguing the world with repetitive and boring gameplay. the joy.

i have mixed feelings about this, i love guitar hero i have all of them and played them none stop, but ever since the third one i have gotten bored of it, metallica was okay but thats only cause it was metallica music, they lost track with aerosmith tbh. Goodbye GH :(

I'm pretty annoyed because I still play and enjoy the series. WOR was the best yet in my opinion.

anyone who says "hurr durr play a real guitar because they are totally the same thing hurr durr" is a moron

I at least hope they'll continue releasing DLC. Probably not :/

@Purple Demon - it's worth noting EA sold Harmonix (who make Rock Band) due to declining sales and described any potential purchase of the company as like 'catching a falling knife'. So no, Rock Band doesn't really win. They'd probably be best just making that game DLC only and leaving it be.

Guitar Hero was a good thing in the beginning. I got into it partly cos I can't play a note of guitar - and believe me, I tried many times. Screw you people who say 'play a real guitar instead' - it was a video game at the end of the day and it revolutionised party gameplay. They used to have it at pub competitions and allsorts. Put simply, it was fantastic in its heyday. And on top of that, it's worth pointing out that it directed kids onto learning how to play the guitar, something that should be applauded. It also made stars of Dragonforce and revived other bands' careers - whether that is to be applauded is simply down to personal opinion.

Harmonix truly cared about the game and actually put together cracking setlists. 'Institutionalized' by Suicidal Tendencies' was an absolute beast to play. Activision killed GH simply by flooding the market. Nobody was going to keep up buying the sequels and spin-offs - I did to a point, the last being GH: Metallica - but after that, it really lost its appeal. And that, combined with expensive plastic instruments in an 'age of austerity', was always going to be bad news for both GH and RB.

Personally, the ironic turning point for me was when I indeed took up a real instrument and started playing drums again. I only really play GH or RB these days if I'm with family or friends, or occasionally if I'm drunk. The novelty has definitely gone. Still, sad to see it go, but its a sign of the times, and now was probably the best time to call it.

FML, years of practice to get to expert, all for nothing. Thanks Guitar Hero. NOT!

Guitar Hero sucks
Rock Band is better
ACTUAL guitar, bass and drums is better than all of them. nuff said.

Posted by Aaron | February 10, 2011 8:27 PM | Reply to this

rock band is a lot better cause there is tonnes more dlc

Posted by Joe | February 10, 2011 8:41 PM | Reply to this

But six was the best one.... Meh... So that has answered my dilema "Shall I convert to rock band?"

Posted by d | February 10, 2011 9:48 PM | Reply to this

Rock band keeps improving, Guitar hero kept getting worse. This has been coming for a couple of years now :/

Posted by Lee | February 10, 2011 9:59 PM | Reply to this

The reason this game has sucked so bad since GH 4(not counting Metallica) is because of DLC. Because of the DLC, millions of people already played Rock Band 3 and Warriors of Rock. This is why sales sucked ass for these games and also the reason why the franchise is dead.

guitar hero was a gd game they had GH van halen, GH areosmith, GH metallica it would have been kl if they brung out GH iron maiden it sucks that rock band got ac/dc

I hate all the comments saying guitar hero is pointless because you should just "play a real guitar". If you're going to follow that logic, why don't we get rid of all racing games? You should all just learn to drive. or we get rid of all fifa games saying you should go play footy, or hell, even get rid of call of duty so you can join the army? Lighten up guys. Seriously.

LOL well i havn't played since i bought a real guitar and not looked back since. PLAY FOR REAL !!

Posted by Anthony | February 11, 2011 9:25 AM | Reply to this

it was good when they first introduced the drums and vocals but after world tour they were all the same, real drums are better to playXD
