Johnny Rotten praises Lady Gaga but slams Green Day

In an interview with the LA Times, Sex Pistols frontman Johnny Rotten (AKA John Lydon) has lavished praise on pop star Lady Gaga, but slammed fellow punks Green Day.

"I have done something good that Lady Gaga is so quite as mentally insane as she is," he told the newspaper. "There's someone out there - yeah, ultimately just shock, but the lyrics are so good. They really are. And so every now and again, as corrupt as the music industry is, there is one in there that can manipulate it properly. She's one. So applause to her."

When asked about the current punks scene, Rotten said:

"Many of the punk bands are cop-outs and imitators and have made it easy for the likes of Green Peace - Green Day, who I hate. I really, really can't stand them.

"To me, they're like coat hangers, and haven't earned the right, they haven't earned the wings, to be wearing the mantle of punk," he added. "They haven't had to go through the violence, and the hate, and the animosity that us chaps way back when had to put up with. We had to fight for every single footstep."

This isn't the first time Rotten has talked trash about Green Day. In 2007 he described Green Day as being "like old Gorgonzola cheese in old boots."

yes, we get it johnny you were an original punk or whatever. but seriously get a grip green day are a sensational punk band and you don't know enough about them to give them that verdict.
lets not forget who makes tv advs for butter for fucks sake.

I like Green Day but the two people above are typical Green Day fanboys/girls. Hey, here's a thought, GD might not have been around if it wasn't for bands like Sex Pistols ;-)

So he has an opinion? Who cares? Everyone does, deal with it!

Posted by Michael | February 1, 2011 11:21 AM | Reply to this

Johnny needs to understand that there was none of that for them to go though, so of course they're not going to be the same.
It's pretty disappointing that he doesn't support a band who're on a similar wavelength.
Plus, they did go through all that shit about American Idiot, with it being all anti-American, if he cared to look into it.

Gaga's lyrics are good?

What the fuck is he on about?

He's got a point about greenday though, they're a good band and all but, ergh every album since American idiot has been radio friendly cheese, and a broadway show? Greenday have sold out. Lady gaga is pushing the boundaries of pop music, greenday are just slewing out music for 12 year olds and the radio, if they went back to Dookie era then they'd still be more respectable, but now, they a shadow of their former selves.

I like Green Day.

However, I do NOT like Countrylife butter :-P

Posted by JC xoxo | February 1, 2011 11:46 AM | Reply to this

I for one agree with him.

Green Day aren't punk in the sense that Johnny Rotten considers punk.

They should not be considered in the same vein as Sex Pistols, the Clash, Ramones and the Buzzcocks are.

If you want an indicator of modern punk, you look at bands like Anti-Flag, not Green Day.

Having said that, Green Day have had more than one successful album, which is more than can be said for the Sex Pistols.

Music evolves, and while Green Day are a good band, they are a rock band. Not punk.

Michael, you have my respect for not being a butthurt Green Day fanboy like Annabel or scott. Keep being awesome.

I think it's the different thing between Sex Pistols and Green Day such as the punkrock sounds they played. Because they came from different origin and also their style which never be same.

Or, in other words, "I can't believe it's not punk!"

To be fair to his comments though, Lady Gaga's lyrics are inspirational:

"Ga Ga Ooh La La, Ba Ba Ro Ma Ma, Ga Ga Ooh La La, Want your bad romance!"

Truly brilliant song-writing there. Ivor Novello would be proud.

I don't think this guy even knows what he is talking about, he just see's the band on MTV, hears about there record sales and has heard about the musical and instantly judges that without really learning the thoughts and ideals behind it.

Punk is how you define it, if you define it as being holy true to yourself no matter what and taking the slings and arrows that come from that, Green Day are more punk than anyone. True some of there music is not 'punk' but the attitude is perhaps there.

Sorry Mr Rotten, your not a punk, your an idiot.

Posted by Smarky | February 1, 2011 12:24 PM | Reply to this

Thing is, Green Day are awesome but ever since American Idiot came out, they've been a bit 'merr'.
If they dared to change their sound or even bring out an album as good as American Idiot they would have a lot more fans.
P.S. Yeah, Johnny Rotten (or John Lydon) look how rock and roll you are... making butter ads. -___-

Posted by Aimzaa | February 1, 2011 12:36 PM | Reply to this

Green Day are not punk. They come under the same genre as the likes of Paramore, Blink 182 and Sum 41. Now tell me, are they punk? No. It's just music created for fat, American teenage girls. Sex Pistols were a great PUNK band. Stop bumming Green Day and actually learn about music. Tards.

I dont't think Green day will be too bothered by his comments. The truth his John Lydon is a bitter, out of touch, old guy/ I'm sure he wouldn't have good words to say about any band but his own, including The Clash or The Ramones.

hey assholes!

if you like a band then great! you should support them!

If you dont, then i am sure there is plenty of other things you could put your time and effort into rather than slate their successful work.

I dont know if you are aware of this, but there are different styles of music and different bands for a reason..............i think its something to do with 'different tastes'?

I know i am going to get some clever dude or dudette [that is actually a dude] fire back with some sort of ground breaking response, probably in the form of 'you are such a ****!

Enjoy music. FC!

American punk and British punk are completely different so it isn't a shock that Johnny Rotten doesn't consider Green Day punk. But then there is nothing wrong with that. It's not like he is telling people they have to agree with him.

Posted by Dani | February 1, 2011 1:16 PM | Reply to this

I think most of you are missing the point of Punk! Punk is being able to do your own thing and not giving a shit about anyone else and what they think of you! And that's exactly what Green Day have done/are doing! Look back to their albums like Dookie. It sold millions! But with Insomniac, Nimrod, Warning etc.. It didn't take many hits and Green Day were said to have gone down hill a bit but look at them, they carried on because they didn't let shit get to them! They done it THEIR way! Basically.. What some people on here are saying (who obviously don't know music) is, Punk is only ONE sound and ONE sound only. If it goes one chord off, OMG - THAT'S NOT PUNK! Shut up! They are a Punk Rock band and they do what THEY want!

Lastly... I reakon Johnny Rotten is only hating them because they made it big and are still going 23/24 years after they started out where as the Sex Pistols only lasted like 3 years!

Oh.. And Billie Joe is God! :P

I'm a big Green Day fan, having seen them twice on the 21st Century Breakdown Tour (O2 and Wembley Stadium), but I have to admit, their later stuff is definatly NOT Punk. Sure, their early stuff, i.e. 1039/Smoothed Out Slappy Hours to Insomniac is Punk, but from Nimrod onwards, it's pretty much just Alternative Rock.

But he DOES have a point, a lot of the Punk bands today aren't really Punk. You get crappy Pop Rock such as All Time Low and Bowling For Soup which get labelled as 'Punk', and while there are still a few great Punk bands around at the moment, such as Rise Against and NOFX, the Punk scene today is cluttered with crappy Pop Punk, which is nothing like Pop Punk in the 90's and early 00's.

Posted by Rob | February 1, 2011 1:39 PM | Reply to this

first of all I would just like to say to that James who just said that why arn't the sex pistols still around, they toured a few years ago and because sid vicious is dead .. do your research dickhead.

I have to admit although Johnny sold out with the butter advert, but he has a point about the music of green day, its not got the punk mentally that say the sex pistols had. He's talking about the shock factor that the SP had and what LG has, green day just go on about saving the planet, rock and punk is dying out.. thanks to pop punk faggots.

Okay, sure, crap like, All Time Low isn't punk. But Green Day.. Look at them! Some of their stuff is more Pop Punk I guess.. But they are a punk band! That's who they are!

Ryan, Implying that sid vicious actually played that bass guitar? he couldn't play bass, they didn't even bother plugging him in during live shows, he was just there cause he was a crazy fucker who was up for doing shit like sticking a saftey pin through his nose. do YOUR research chief.

I am a HUGE green day fan. i have every album they have ever produced, but their last album wasn't punk. American Idiot however was. consider if you will, that during the aftermath of 9/11 no americans wanted to say a bad word about the country. it was all about american values for american citizens during a new wave of patriotism. all of a sudden green day, a band who for all intents and purposes were washed up by this point release an album which is essentially a big fuck you to these people.

The Sex Pistols were the most manufactured band going. Malcom Mclaren. look him up. they ever named their second album the great rock and roll swindle because of it.

I like green day but I always thought of them as a Rock/Alternative rock band. Maybe they set out to be a punk band, but they're later music (especiall AMerican Idiot) is more Rock.

I always thought punk was more the likes of Buzzcocks, UK subs, Stiff Little Fingers and The Clash. You can't say Green Day sounds the same as any of theseproper punk bands

Rottens actually making alot of sense. UK punk and US punk are alot different than each other. UK punk for one is not contrived, whereas US punk is just a load of pussy shit. So Green Day can just jog on.

Green Day haven't sold out. It's just a completely different situation now since American Idiot. Their songs aren's about masturbation and standing up against your parents or whatever anymore. They went to a more complex place lyrically and started to try new things as musicians. They have a broadway show because they started to explore better the vocal harmonies (which they do since before tré) and their songs now have that in them. The Sex Pistols and earlier punk bands never did that, their sound was never complex, but I'm not saying that's bad, that was the whole idea.

Green day are refered as the kings of punk and to have someone who takes the piss out of farmers and advertises butter doesn't deserve to have our attention. Also lady gaga, wtf. She's insane and all credit to her (or him) for what she's achieved but to say her lyrics are good or anything other than random is wrong.

Green Day would not exist if it wasn't for this man and owe their "Genre" to him so perhaps all you whiney emo cunts should perhaps stop for a minute and think who brought Punk into the public eye. Okay, i like Green Day, but I can see Johnny's point. Lady Gaga is, at least, original and doesn't give a fuck, like the Sex Pistols when they started (though since a lot of bands have spung up in their place).
Without the SPs, there would be no Green Day - Billie Joe has referenced them as an inspiration - and how many bands are there out there that are similar to GD?
Johnny likes Gaga because she's different, and more punk than anyone else out there today, even if she is technically a pop artist.
Im sure folk will think Im talking shit, whatever, I like Green Day, Gaga, Johnny Rotten, and own almost everything all three have released.

Well green day are a great live band even if they have gone radio friendly now as regards recent albums, and are now more of a rock band as opposed punk band. Sex pistols were great in the late 70s but did not start punk rock. Iggy and the Stooges were the original punks. But one thing dose make Green Day differ from Mr Pop and Mr Rotten, butter and insurance adds. Maybe Green Day could do a B&Q ad in their twilight years to make em punk rock again.

I don't think it's fair to say what he has said about Green Day. They're a great band, and although they don't sound like what punk used to be - who does? This is the 21st century.

I agree with his thought on Lady Gaga, I think she's awesome. Her lyrics are more decent than other acts in the charts. I'll take Rihanna as an example. Have you ever really listened to some of the lyrics in her songs? Really does just sound like she's been on a rough night out, come back short on cash and decided to write garbage and have it thrown at teens. I think Lady Gaga is inspirational, in her music, lyrics, style and what she works for outside of the music.

He seems to slide over the co-operation of the great 942 Gilman St.

I mean, I respect the guy for all he's done with the Pistols, but Punk is more than sheer nihlism. He needs to get off his high horse and accept the fact that Green Day have been there for people who never knew the Sex Pistols.

I listened to Green Day, who then introduced me to the Pistols. So in most cases like my own, Lydon owes his career to Green Day for revitalising an interest in Punk Rock.

A lot of the people who say that Green Day 'isnt punk' or that they 'sold out' clearly havent done a lot of research on the band. Have you looked into their reasons for putting 'American Idiot' on broadway? Have you seen the show itself? Cause I'll tell you, it's fucking incredible. I've always thought of 'punk' as doing what you want to, and not giving a shit what anyone else thinks. And that's exactly what Green Day have been doing for the past 20 something years.

I have more respect for Green Day than for any other band out there today, because they've worked their asses off to get where they are today, and they've never compromised what they believe in to get there.

As for Johnny Rotten, he doesnt know what he's talking about when he says they havent experienced hate. The backlash they recieved when they signed on with Reprise was HUGE. They got tons of hate for it, even now, people still hate on them.

My own personal opinion, is that I've seen Green Day live 3 times, and I own every record. They are one of- if not the- best live bands EVER. There are few people who can work a crowd like Billie Joe Armstrong. There is no way that this band could ever be compared to bands like Sum 41, Good Charlotte, Paramore, etc. because it's like apples to oranges. Green Day is in a whole different league entirely.

So, while Rotten is entitled to his opinion, I will say that I don't think it's very well though out on his part.

but johnny rotton is the only person involved in any of these adverts to appear on a 'i can't believe it's not butter' ad or whatever it was.

Getting hate from fans for signing onto a record label is a lot different from getting regular kickings in the street due to the way that you look or life choice. I think thats what he's getting at there.

Every generation tends to have it better than the generation before (not sure if this is a quote but it should be :) )

Just cos the sex pistols never were that good and Green Day have always been amazing and always will.

You're just jealous :)

You've had your time. Lets face it, you're past it mate.

Just because your "origonal punk" band were shit compared to real punk like Green Day, doesnt mean you should take it out on them.

Of course they've earnt the right to be punk.. Do your research mate, they've had to go through LOADS of hate and violence. They've fought and put everything they can and more into becoming where they are now. They are the only band i have full respect for. They're probably, if not the best band going.

and Old Gorgonzola cheese in old boots?

Pretty sure you're explaining yourself there.

I liked the sex pistols, but now i've lost all respect for them.

Anyway, Green Day don't give a shit what you think (:

To be honest there isn't really suck a thing as punk, does anybody really believe that 'Anarchy in the UK' has the same vibe as 'I wanna be your boyfriend'? or 'Holiday in Cambodia' relates to 'London Calling' ?

Its a shame People will never get along over things like a word, The King Blues are Considered Punk And Ska but they have a fucking ukelele in the mix, that is punk, its against what everyone else wants.

Finally, (i know this has gone on a bit)
I think Rotten does Like Green Day because if he says he hates them, it pisses people off, just like most of his career, search 'johnny rotten' on youtube and it'll come up with a video slagging them off, and then saying "but god they're good"

Peace

I posted a note to John Lydon on my Tumblr - allllliiiii.tumblr.com - but it's too long to post here. Read if you'd like :)

Essentially, John Lydon is an idiot.

Also, totally agree with the above comment. Who gets to say what's 'punk' and what isn't?

search 'johnny rotten on green day' sorry

Posted by Seymour Awesome | February 1, 2011 7:04 PM | Reply to this

Bit rich is it not? He's from a manufactured band and advertises butter. Green Day didn't just rise to the fame and recognition they have, they worked hard for it, anyone who knows about ther early years knows they got into the music industry the hard way and worked their butts off for it, sure they probably wouldn't exist if it wasn't for bands like the Sex Pistols but John Lydon needs to stick with his Countrylife, perhaps make friends with Iggy Pop...

Of course it was tough for u. You had to blaze the trail & punk thanks you for that!! Just like African Americans have it easier than their ancestors forced into a life of slavery. It's all relative.....

Posted by Monkee junque | February 1, 2011 7:10 PM | Reply to this

I totally 100% agree with Shanna!
F*** what everyone else thinks about them not being punk. If Billie Joe listened to those comments and changed his style of music, then THAT would not be punk! Right now, he's doing what HE wants to do which is what punk is! They used to talk about sec, masterbation and drugs in their music and people who think they are less punk now.. It;s because they've grown up and are now talking about more important things in life! Still punk! Also.. I have seen alot of bands live, e.g, Good Charlotte, Blink 182, Paramore, All Time Low etc and no way is Green Day in the same class as them! I've seen green Day twice and they know how to get the crowd going! They put on an amazing gig.. Actually.. No. They put on an amazing EVENT! They're awesome, they're lyrics and music are awesome and someone commented on here saying that Johnny is a legend and Billie Joe WILL be a legend! Billie Joe already is a legend and will definitely go down in history with the likes of the Beatles, the Stones etc. Oh.. And Green Day are not sellouts because they signed a record deal! I know people refer to them as sellouts because they played at Gibson St all the time because signing a major record label.. But that is total crap! They managed to do something they love (writing music) whilst making it big at the same time rather than staying at Gibson St all their life! Fare play to them!

Johnny Rotten has no idea what he's talking about! I used to like the Sex Pistols but i've lost all respect for him after reading that!

Keep doing what you're doing, Green Day!

Posted by Toni | February 1, 2011 7:11 PM | Reply to this

Sex Pistols were the originals, so yeah they're bound to go through it all first. They broke the boundaries so Green Day didn't have to. That's just the way time works. People are bound to be inspired by his band. Maybe Johnny should go back to his butter adverts and stop complaining about punk bands who are following in his band's footsteps.

Posted by Melody | February 1, 2011 7:11 PM | Reply to this

Why do people fail to establish the difference between "punk" and "pop-punk". Sorry, but Green Day do not have the sound to match an original punk band. They have the pop rock element more than the punk element. Dunno why the interview Johnny Rotten anyway, he's just a rude asshole.

Posted by your mum | February 1, 2011 7:17 PM | Reply to this

I think that's really ungrateful. Green Day drew massive inspiration from The Pistols, and that's throwing it back in their faces. New wave punk is different from the original, it's called evolution! And saying that Gaga's lyrics are better is ridiculous! I actually quite like Lady Gaga, but her lyrics are just above average, if that. GRR.

Posted by puglish | February 1, 2011 7:20 PM | Reply to this

I have just lost a lot of respect for an icon. Clearly Johnny does not accept that bands like Green Day look up to and draw inspiration from them, or he does and chooses to ignore it. When Green Day decieded they wanted to make something of themselves and signed to a record label, they knew that they would never be accepted at Gilman Street again. People actually wanted Billie dead! If he had backed down from that decision and not done what he had a passion for, that would not be punk.
The defence rests.

i understand where he is coming from on both points. you may not like gaga (i don't) to realize that she is shaking things up in the pop world. And to all of the people talking about his country life adverts, he is about 60 and has not released an album in 30 odd years. He needs some sort of income, jheeezzz.

WHAT THE FUCK?! Says the guy giving his opinion like some fucking god?

I disagree 100% with Johnny on the case of Green Day. He's a bitter old man who thinks because HE went through a hard time which in HIS opinion is the worst time in the world that he's right.

Pathetic really. Green Day are successful, he is not. Pretty simple really.

I think you're missing the point, he is selling Middle Class butter, therefore it disreagrds any opinions he may have. And Lady GaGa inspirational? Its not inspirational to dress like a hooker in your videos and wear a dress made of meat and claim its an anti war statement, thats just ridiculous. Green Day, although not playing strictly punk music, still use a punk aesthetic behind their music. The overall moral of this? You cannot call yourself punk if you adveritise butter on TV and call GaGa inspirational!

Posted by Tom | February 1, 2011 8:56 PM | Reply to this

Well the 90s just weren't the 70s you know. In the 90s people were already more open-minded and in that way less agressive towards punk and stuff. And of course you can't call Green Day punk in the meaning it had in Rotten's time. Times change don't they. But I can see were he's coming from.
At the same time, I think I recall him saying Green Day were a fake, made up by their record company?
Hmm
I know a certain punk band of the 70's that were started by their producer..can't remember the name..Sex Cannons?
Anyway, I mean, everyone has the right to have their own opinions huh.

Oh, im sorry, not violent enough for you? Shut the fuck up, people take a more pleasant approach to things now sorry if that bugs you or anything. Idiot.
If people arent violent against Green Day does that not initially mean their music must be more fitting to more people's tastes and not aw i hate everyone that isnt punk and stuff.
And hmm, if Lady Gaga is really what you find inspirational, why are we listening to your opinion anyways?

Posted by Loren | February 1, 2011 9:50 PM | Reply to this

Posted by will | February 1, 2011 10:43 PM | Reply to this

I think it's ironic that he has the guts to trash Green Day, when The Clash often said bands like Sex Pistols always sound the same with each song. Now, I hate to bash another hard working punk musician, but I don't think he should be coming down like this on Green Day. I'll admit their songs are very catchy and more pop-punk or rock these days, but they used to be punk 100%, and there's nothing I hate more than someone telling someone else what they are and what they aren't. I respect Lady Gaga, but they're nothing "inspirational" in her lyrics. I don't want to argue pointlessly with anybody, but I think he's making himself look like a huge douchebag criticizing Green Day that way.

Posted by Meisai | February 1, 2011 10:55 PM | Reply to this

@Scotty 2 hottie The Gallows. Punk. Don't make me laugh. i can't believe anyone would slam green day for not being punk and then big up the gallows. just goes to show that most people these days have no taste in music.

as for the topic at hand im a big fan of both the sex pistols and green day and while green day may not be punk i think rotten has lost all of his creditability since the butter adverts. Thank fuck their are still real punks out there still is all i can say.

Says the man who spent last year flogging butter. How very punk indeed :P

Posted by L | February 1, 2011 11:26 PM | Reply to this

Wait... Gaga's lyrics "are so good" - what planet is he on?!!

"This beat is sick, I wanna take a ride on your disco stick" and ""Call if you want but you're not gonna reach my telephone" - is this the pinnacle of lyric-writing nowadays?!!!

Say what you like about Green Day, but they do write some good lyrics...

Posted by B | February 1, 2011 11:31 PM | Reply to this

first of all, butter/broadway - same difference.
also, green day are a punk band, but the without the sex pistols, would they be here now?
iggy pop may be the original punk, whatever, but johnny, sid and co made social changes in britain (something green day hasnt done ANYwhere).
green day hasnt had most of scotland, england, ireland and wales against them, have they?
and without the sex pstols, thhere wouldnt have been other influential punk bands forming at that time - generation x, siouxsie and the banshees, the clash, the buzzcocks, to name but a few.
green day are great, but johnny is entitled to his own opinion, although to do it so publically is a bit off.
as for lady gaga, she's punk - billie joes outfits never shocked anyone - gaga's and rotten's did. and her lyrics are good, theyre entertaining, and better than numerous songs about fucking holden caulfield.
so, to those who are voicing their opinions - like me - put aside personal taste and prejudice and look at the whole fucking picture.
get a fucking grip xxx

God this guy is getting on my nerves. He's always trashing GD. I dont know how he can say they havent earnt their wings. They may not be one of the legends like the sex pistols but they are one one of the most influential bands of our generation. They've had a longer and arguably more successful career than the sex pistols. Sex Pistols were manufactured. Fact is Johnny needs a reality check. Stop living in the old times. Times have changed. Go back to your butter adverts you talentless hasbeen

i love sex pistols' music but oh my god what a cock.

he says hes protesting and the music industry is all corrupt yet...hes out there advertising butter & praising the queen of autotune that is lady gaga.

Green Day don't deserve it?!?! theyve been around since the early 90's, they sell out large stadiums in minutes..i think they deserve it. Slappy Hours, Dookie, American Idot & 21st Century are masterpieces, okay they might not be punk as it was defined in the 70's but they are a new wave of punk which is more advanced and complex.

sex pistols couldnt play any of their instruments and had over night fame..they were just in the right place at the right time..overrated crap

If any of you actually took the time to sit down and listen to both of lady gaga's albums you'll see she's a completely brilliant song writer, in so many ways, you're all just too focused on one main genre of music. And yeah, he may do butter adverts for a bit of extra cash but......... green day have a fucking musical?!?? So punk I can't even comprehend the punkness

Posted by Jade | February 2, 2011 9:34 AM | Reply to this

gaga is an inspiration and her albums are truly awesome, so are green day. the man is opinionated so what? it is true what he said though, green day have lost their punkyness, but then again true punk died ages ago punk now is just a tag and sub genre

Posted by marty mcfly | February 2, 2011 10:07 AM | Reply to this

I had to post again. Green Day is not punk, they're alt rock, very very poor alt rock. It's a shame they get as much credit for their work as they do. The only talented member of that band is Mike Dirnt. Billie can't play guitar very well and his voice is just samey, Tre's alright, has potential, and I think if he was in a different band he would really be able to let rip. But because it's the Billie Joe Show he's not allowed. Same with Mike accept he actually does have talent. Also, lyric wise. "Do you know your enemy, do you know your enemy, do you know your enemy" Yep. Totally inspiring that.

FUCK YEAH! Very nicely said, Johnny! Haa, Greenday are a trio of talentless, walking dildos and everyone would benifit if they were just destroyed. Sex Pistols were the original Punks--Greenday are NOTHING but wannabes. What a load of three-chord bollocks. (:

Posted by Flin | February 2, 2011 2:12 PM | Reply to this

He's right, greenday shouldn't be what comes to mind when someone says 'punk', their lyrics might indicate some kind of punk way of thinking, but their actions completely contradict that. They're completely inmmersed in the pop industry and haven't done anything to change it.

Posted by mike | February 2, 2011 5:35 PM | Reply to this

Green Day are not a true punk band just a bunch of wannabes. I mean, Green Day have a goddam MUSICAL out. The more real punk bands nowadays are Trash Talk, Gallows and Ceberal Ballzy. Despite Johnny Rotten's recent selling out, the Sex Pistols were real, anyone else know about Sid and Nancy? Compared to the musical it's ridiculous that Green Day are known as a punk band.

Posted by Holly | February 2, 2011 8:30 PM | Reply to this

Johnny is just slating Green Day cause he is jealous of their level of fame and the fact that, unlike him, they are relevant!

Deary Deary, death to false Metal in the 1st place, id like to know why the Rock Media feel the need to report on "Punk bands" in the 1st place, an 2nd what relevance Green Day have to do with Rock skips over my head, punk was an attitude, a lifestyle, not popcorn an corny videos with americana splashed across the screen! Suckers! shame on the Rock Media for giving these crap musicians the airplay they never deserved machined music by the record companys yet again! numpty's!! Long Live Rock n Roll - (Green Day never was an never will be Great Music) ;-)

Posted by boberdy | February 3, 2011 8:33 AM | Reply to this

I have actually lost all respect for him after this.

Sorry mate, but things change. Music now is a lot different than it was back in your day, and you have no right to criticise such a great band.

In my personal opinion, I think Green Day are a thousand times better than the fucking Sex Pistols.

And you can't keep saying that 'bands like that wouldn't be around if they weren't'. Maybe not, but The Sex Pistols too will have gained inspiration from someone for their music, and so on. In 10 years time we'll be saying that 'That band wouldn't be around if Green Day weren't'.

We need to stop living in the past. Are we gonna get to the year 2050 and still be talking about The Sex Pistols and AC/DC? No, We'll be talking about bands like Green Day and Blink!

We can't dwell in the past forever.

Posted by Craig | February 3, 2011 5:22 PM | Reply to this

Green Day sucks, that's a fact. It's a pop rock band, has nothing to do with punk or rock'n'roll (as almost every band today). Johnny is so right.

Johnny Rotten aka the biggest hypocrite in the history of the world.

Punk is about not following a crowd and do what you want and saying fuck the people who tell you what to do.

I think Green Day have done that, they've done whats best for them regardless of "selling out", which is a term people use when they are quite clearly jealous of the heights they've reached.

Johnny himself was a founder of "punk" and now hes setting a criteria for which people must qualify as punk? contradiction much?!

He's a washed up old man whos last bite at staying in the limelight is to sell butter and blast bands who are taking what he created and shoving it back in his hypocritical old face.

If you dislike Green Day's music fair enough everyone has their own taste, but you can't call them shit because if they where, they certainly wouldnt be touring the world, going gold and platinum around the world and sticking it to every sad hater around.

As for calling people fan boys/ fan girls, I'm 100% sure if somebody was slagging off a band you liked, you would have plenty to say, no self righteous bullshit about how you wouldnt either, its a fact.

Jesus people are fucked up nowadays

Posted by Danny | February 4, 2011 2:19 AM | Reply to this

Um I didn't hear ANY of Green Day's songs on the radio after American Idiot. Only on alternative rock radio stations, and even then there were only TWO songs that were played from it. And albums after American idiot? There was only ONE album. And like I said, it never hit the radio other than some rock stations. At least where I live.

And the Broadway shows is actually good. It's not cheesy or stupid like you'd assume, it has a lot of heart and real serious issues, real angst and emotions that you get sucked into. It has drugs, it has sex, it has war, it has love and rage. Don't knock it until you've seen it. Everyone can relate to it. But it's definitely not like anything out there.

And Johnny doesn't know shit. Green Day had to go through shit too to get where they are today. They toured in a bookmobile across the country, with no money. Crashing on fans couches. They squatted buildings. Gained their own following by touring and trying to sell their albums. They used to be a part of the punk scene of Berkeley, and they started getting a large following of fans because of their talent ALONE. Labels started looking into them only because of that. The labels wanted them, not the other way around. Because they were great. And when they took that chance and signed to Warner, ALL of their friends and peers completeley got on their high horses and shat on them. Kicked them out. Turned their backs. That's gotta not be fun at all, and has to be hard, has to hurt. That scene was their LIFE. But they took the chance because they knew they could be better, could be bigger, needed to have the world hear them. They did what they want. He should just stfu.

And a hell of a lot of the bands out today have been influenced in some way by Green Day. They all seem to have been. Fuck, like everyone. Good Charlotte, Simple Plan, Sum 41, Avril Lavigne, Paramore, blah blah blah. Even LADY GAGA herself said she used to be obsessed with Dookie when she was a kid. American Idiot influenced a hell of a lot of people, a whole generation of kids, too. It was angry, and it spoke out about shit that no other bands were talking about in their music. They took a chance putting that out. It could've been the end of them, people could've turned their backs. They were playing to half filled arenas when that album came out, and were being booed because of the content of it. Fucking Bush supporters...

Anyways, this guy likes to talk shit.

Posted by Finkster | February 4, 2011 4:14 AM | Reply to this

And creating rules to punk, limits to it, criteria for it, is completeley NOT PUNK. Punk is being whatever you want. Not giving two shits about it. Being loud, voicing your opinions, caring about what goes on out there in the world. You don't have to sing only about specific things, have only a specific sound, only wear certain clothes, only listen to certain types of music and nothing else. And then shit on everyone who doesn't do the same, thinking you're the coolest. It's completeley close minded. And hypocritical. In doing all of that, you are putting yourself in a box. Labeling yourself when trying to NOT do so, or more like when claiming you're unique.

johnny only did the butter ad so that he could fund a Public Image Ltd. tour for the fans. Sure it may be "selling out" in many peoples eyes, but if it helps bring the music to the people who love I think that is acceptable. he didn't just do it for personal gain, he did it so he could bring his music to people who want to hear it, so good on him.

Sex Pistols could never play instruments, but they HELPED evolve the punk genre.
They did not even start it, the Ramones did.
This man seriously needs to face the fact that Green Day are an excellent punk band and deserve a lot more recognition for their work.
I mean, at least they can play instruments and sing to a much higher standard.

@George Thornton
Billie's dad died? Yeah, that is sad, but Johnny went through more of a struggle than he did. Rotten grew up up in a bad neighborhood, suffered spinal meningitis that left him with a messed up spin, a bad memory, and several months in the hospital. He lost his best friend to a drug overdose, his band got screwed over by their manager, and his mum died from cancer.
So, no, Johnny's struggle was a lot more worse than Billies.

Anyways, as for the butter commercial he did, if anyone knew anything, he did that commercial to use the money to get his band P.i.L together. He had a good excuse for doing a commercial. At least he didn't do a Broadway play unlike Green Day.

Green Day aren't REAL punk. They're POP Punk (emphasis on the Pop part)

So. before you talk about how Johnny Rotten is a "sell-out", or "the Sex Pistols" suck, get your facts straight.

¬¬ Green Day is just different from the Sex Pistols. I don't fucking care if Green Day is punk or not. I don't like to be labelled. I just like the music.
and I like both.

Green Day are a good band. Not punk, by any stretch of the imagination, but a good band. To me their a cross of Cheap Trick and Smashing Pumpkins. Not original, not groundbreaking and certainly not our generations Beatles. The people who enjoy Green Day are casual music listeners. If music is a large part of your life, Green Day stink.

All the motherfuckers who think that Green Day sucks and arent punk and shit, GO GET A LIFE! Punk is believing in what you do .. and to say shit about a band who ARE The Beatles of their generation, and undoubtedly, one of the best bands around, IS NOT PUNK. Sex Pistols never got the popularity nor the respect Green Day have , and that's why they're jealous of em. Green Day have gathered the respect of enough people and critics around the world. And yes, music is a huuge part of my life, but Green Day are more than just a part of my life to me. They're my LIFE. So all the people who think Green Day sucks and are stinky to music lovers ... just FUCK OFF AND DIE! You're all jealous of them .. though there are a more GD fans than haters here... GREEN DAY FUCK THE WORLD! You all are just wasting your time hating them, because it will not turn their hundreds of millions of fans around the world to haters.

And before saying shit about Green Day , that motherfucking 'ROTTEN' dude should also realise that he himself is a sell-out... and a 'PISS STAIN'. Well atleast Green Day dont advertise some motherfucking butter brand.

@Lena, honey, ARE YOU FUCKIN SERIOUS? I MEAN, SERIOUSLY? YOU ARE REALLY COMPARING THE PAINS JOHNNY AND BILLIE JOE HAD IN THEIR LIVES? HOW OLD ARE YOU, FOUR?!
and just for you to know, Billie Joe's father died of cancer when he was 10. and Rodeo's not the fairest city in the world, either. do you know that people down there are called on the phone and told to shut the windows because a toxic gas just spread from the refinery? did you know that Armstrong has long suffered of panic attacks and depression? that he has been called a sellout by the people he loved and rispected the most? that he & Mike built up a band on their own, not because of a friggin manager? and above all, DID YOU FREAKING KNOW THAT GREEN DAY IS NOT JUST BILLIE JOE ARMSTRONG? there are you know, the other "ugly" guys you probably never heard of. they're Mike Dirnt and Tre Cool. Mikes probably had one of the worst and most painful lives ever, to SHUT THE HECK UP. google them.
and, PLEASE, accordin to people using your songs (from a concept album) for a musical is faaaaaar better than ADVERTISING BUTTER. WHAT ARE YOU, A HILLBILLY? A FUCKING REDNECK?!

@slappyplatypus First, YOU DON'T NEED TO TYPE IN CAPS LOCK TO GET YOUR POINT ACROSS.

Second, why so butt hurt about my comment?

Sorry, not a redneck, mate.
And I'm well aware who is in Green Day aside from Billie.
I talked about Billie in my previous comment because a user brought up Billie's pains and how they're worse then anyone in the Sex Pistols. Learn to read before you go off on anyone.
And another thing, when did I call anyone in that band ugly, or talk about their appearance at all? Sorry, I'm not a person who listens to a band because of their looks. Do you?

Also, you don't need to insult me, that is rather rude. Are you a redneck? Can't you have a decent response without insulting someone.

So why don't you go wank off to some Green Day albums and cry, fanboy.

For fark's sake Johnny... I didn't know that there were set of 'rules' in punk rock???? since when you have to obey the 'rules' to be punk rock??? looks like this once a 'punk-prophet' guy has turned into john wayne

WOW! EVERYONE IS DEBATING HERE.

BACK THEN PUNK EXISTED BECAUSE OF WHAT WAS HAPPENING AROUND, BANDS LIKE "THE CLASH" WENT THROUGH HELL AND EXPERIENCED THINGS, SUCH AS WHEN THEY WERE IN A STREET RIOT OF BLACK PEOPLE FIGHTING WHITE OFFICERS, THAT MADE THEM MAKE THE SONG 'WHITE RIOT", NOW PEOPLE TALK ABOUT STUFF LIKE IF THEY BEEN THERE IN THAT SITUATION.

LADY GAGA, EVEN THOUGH I HATE HER, DOESN'T FOLLOW THE TRENDS OF POP, SHE MADE HER OWN, SHE DIN'T FOLLOW NOBODY.

AND ALL YOU!! STOP SAYING WHOS A BETTER PUNK BECAUSE "THE RAMONES" WILL ALWAYS BE THE ONLY PUNK BAND.

"AND THE OTHER THING ABOUT "THE RAMONES" IS THAT WERE OUR OWN BREED OF MUSIC, AND EVERYBODY IN THE WORLD HAS TRIED TO COPY US, AND I MEAN EVERYBODY "THE SEX PISTOLS", "THE CLASH".
