Mastodon are to release their first-ever live album on March 14.
The lavishly packaged 12-track CD and DVD set, Live At The Aragon was recorded in Chicago on October 17, 2009 and features the band playing their fourth studio album Crack The Skye in its entirety plus a handful of old favourites.
According to drummer Brann Dailor, the Atlanta prog-metallers felt an overwhelming pressure to perform well in front of a 4,500-capacity crowd as well as a 10-camera film crew.
"It was really nerve-wracking because you can't go back and fix anything if you screw up," laughs Brann. "There was a big sigh of relief when we finished that show. I think it looks great. Fans can also watch the special film we had playing behind us during the set and trip out, dude!"
The band - whose line-up is completed by Troy Sanders (bass/vocals), Bill Kelliher (guitar/vocals) and Brent Hinds (guitar/vocals) - are currently holed up in Atlanta refining material for their next album before they enter the studio in April.
"This album is definitely shaping up to be one of my favourites," says the drummer. "It's been kind of surprising, because you have a preconceived notion of what you want to do and then you get in there and everything completely changes. At the moment, it's sounding like a super-heavy Led Zeppelin!"
