"There's no shortage of riffage in Metallica world!"

Metallica bassist Rob Trujillo has revealed that the band are itching to begin work on their follow-up to 2008's Death Magnetic.

"There's no shortage of riffage in Metallica world right now," says Trujillo. "I'm super-excited. I know that we've got another couple of records in us. I think it's only gonna get better."

The band will return to the UK in July to headline Sonisphere.

LOL they're so shit, I wish they would just give up already. However, unfortunately they want to write another album of boring songs that sound exactly the same.

Great.

Wasn't this story already posted in January?

@Mikey W I thought so, too! I heard they would be in the studio by March/April, May at the latest.

@Jake I disagree, all their songs sound the same? From album to album they've changed.

I'm looking forward to this album! I hope it's one of their heavier ones, though, I'm sure I won't be disappointed either way.

Lol at that guy saying Metallica are shit..

Yeah when you headline Sonisphere and sell out arenas all over the world in minutes, maybe then your comment may be deemed a little justified.

Metallica have done nothing but make quality albums and influence pretty much the entire modern metal scene.

Just cos they're not your taste doesnt make em shit.. Grow up.

@greg well done dude.. that was a great comment..

Posted by sanjiv balan | April 26, 2011 12:46 PM | Reply to this

i think the point that jake was trying to make is not that metallica are/were actually shit,... more that their great musical legacy is being slightly diluted each time that they make a new record that is for the most part uninspiring, same-y, and not a touch on what they were creating "back in the day".

to have quit on a high might have done more to preserve their high levels of credibility.

to be fair though, i like the idea that they just love doing what they do, they're not preoccupied with money-making or album sales, it's purely for the fans and for the band's own enjoyment that they continue to create music. i think in this day and age it's highly admirable, and i will certainly go and watch them at sonisphere for the fantastic show that they will undoubtedly put on.

but i will not be surprised at the groans at the new material, nor the groans when they are announced as headliners yet again at soni in 2013, 2015, 2017...

The fact is Metallica are still successful selling out concerts due to the undoubted strength of their backcatalogue. They have produced mediocre records after the Black Album. Just look at album sales.

@Jake, your probably a MCR fan, you opinion doesnt count.

Posted by tom.w | April 26, 2011 1:38 PM | Reply to this

No MCR are shit. I like a lot of bands eg. The Wonder Years, Jimmy Eat World, The Get Up Kids, Foo Fighters, Skindred, Cancer Bats, Comeback Kid, Slipknot, Parkway Drive, Blink 182 etc... I love many bands I just really do not get the fascination surrounding Metallica.

Posted by Jake | April 26, 2011 2:04 PM | Reply to this

@Jake fair enough, Metallica aren't your type of band, but it's more than 'fascination'. The fact that people are still great fans of theirs today is homage to the fact that they're good at making decent music.

Posted by Angst | April 26, 2011 2:20 PM | Reply to this

Doesn't everyone just always moan that their new music isn't as good as the old stuff though? Many bands only release 2-3 albums because with many of those that do continue to release albums, they either get repetitive and boring, or they change their sound. And to be honest with some of metallica's music I cannot tell if it were released in 1985 or 2008, so I find it repetitive. However this is just my opinion.

Posted by Jake | April 26, 2011 2:32 PM | Reply to this

@ jake - i agree ! first 4 albums - awsome !!! but then they had to sellout with the fucking black album , ugghh- from there on theyve got worse - there overrated i think , there not fuccking rockstars anymore !! they cut there hair and sold out- they go to hollywood film preieres , buy designer clothes and spend millions of pounds on artwork, DOnt think i could see iron maiden doing that , im more likely to find maiden aving a pint down my local , than any of that shit

Posted by rp | April 26, 2011 3:59 PM | Reply to this

@Beth..

Really?! For a start Metallica > maiden.

2nd Bruce Dickinson has his own private plane with masses of artwork sprayed all over it.. Jesus Christ it angers me how hippocritical people are!

Sellout with the black album? Are you serious? That and master of puppets are considered two of the greatest metal albums ever written! A quote
From Kerry king (slayer) "the last album inever bought was Metallica 'master of puppets' because since then, ive not needed to buy another album, nothing comes close"

If you had billions of dollars I'm sure you'd spend them on decent things, I bloody would, especially if I'd worked as hard as Metallica to get it!

They've done nothing but churn out brilliant album after brilliant album, not saying that I agree with the pedestal that they get put on.. I've always preferred Slayer and Pantera but hand the four horsemen some credit! 30 years and wanting to make another album.. Why not? They love what they do, they love their fans and they love playing shows. And tbh, they're fucking awesome at writing!

Posted by Greg | April 26, 2011 4:34 PM | Reply to this

I don't understand these comments about Metallica's 'same-y' sound. There's clearly a different sound when you compare their albums of the 80s, those of the 90s, and then St. Anger and Death Magnetic.

Can't wait to hear the sound of the new album, I like all of their albums for different reasons, but I am hoping that this new one will be similar to that of their 80s stuff.

So excited to see them again at Sonisphere!

Posted by Gavin | April 26, 2011 4:49 PM | Reply to this

@greg. its not bruce that has his own plane though. its the band's plane which he flies. and they have the plane so they can get to more countries in less time for the FANS.

Posted by sam | April 26, 2011 5:37 PM | Reply to this

Metallica are one of the greatest bands ever, there isin't many bands that can say then have accomplished what metallica have. So james voice isin't what it was, doesn't matter when you actually see them live because there still amazing.

Yes the black album is amazing, i wasen't listening to metallica in 1991 so i don't care to call the album bad for being sell out.

Posted by Sadwingsofdestiny | April 26, 2011 5:58 PM | Reply to this

I still dont understand how you can have a go at Tallica for spending loads of money when maiden are only doing the same thing..

Metallica love their fans, so do maiden, but the two are incomparable, they're two completely different subgenres of metal and shouldn't be compared.

And they both lose to the awesomeness that was Pantera.

:)

LMFAO.
Of course, this is Kerrang. Almost none of the commenters on here know nothing about music. Everyone here probably is infatuated with Black Veil Brides, My Chemical Romance, pop emo junk, the new Slipknot (Slipknots first two albums were killer, then they went downhill), All Time Low, Asking Alexandria, and other shit like that. Want to read about real metal bands, and people who actually DON'T COMPARE IRON MAIDEN TO METALLICA? Then go to Blabbermouth, Metal Hammer, or Metal Underground. Kerrang isn't the place for comparing two metal giants.

Posted by Alyssa | April 26, 2011 9:07 PM | Reply to this

@Alyssa My favourite bands are My Chemical Romance AND Metallica, then it's Lady Gaga and Daft Punk. I probably know a lot more about music than someone like you who just stereotypes ever band.

Sorry, Metallica used to be good, but by releasing worse and worse albums they are no longer the same. They have earned the name Shitallica.

I've been into Metallica since just before Ride and can't wait for the new album! Okay, I fell out with them for the Black album... but after 10 years I finally forgave them and like that stuff now. St Anger and D Mag showed a new sound and I can't wait to see the next development. They shouldn't try harking back to old days; they were great but are done.

Posted by Jason Snowden | April 27, 2011 10:22 AM | Reply to this

kerrang give quality albums low ratings saying they are too predictable. then give metallica high ratings even though you dont get any more predictable.

Posted by Ryan Anderson | April 27, 2011 11:25 AM | Reply to this

@ Alyssa - LMFAO indeed! "Almost none of the commenters on here know nothing about music."
That's a double negative - what you've actually said is almost everyone on here knows something about music.
People like you are annoying. Of course we know about music, that's why we are all here. Why not compare two metal bands? No one was suggesting they were the same genre or comparing their musical ability, they were comparing their lifestyles/integrity. I don't see the problem. Just because people mention Metallica and Maiden in the same sentence does not equal musical ignorance.

Like the fact you just listed a load of typical stereotype bands that metal fans (by right, of course) should hate. Surprised you omitted 30 Seconds To Mars and You Me At Six! Oh and Paramore of course.
By the way on a side note, despite the first album still being a clear favourite, I think Slipknot have released some great material since the first 2 albums. Did you actually listen to them? I suspect you are one of those people that ditch bands they are supposed fans of as soon as an MCR fan dares to listen to them.
That's why I also suspect you know less about music than you clearly think you do, because you are obviously narrow minded and elitist.

@Jessica Hughes - well said.

Okay first Metallica are certainly not shit. Selling out arenas in minutes, still selling millions of albums and the capability of carrying out world tours so far on in their career is simply amazing. However, people who say everyone has their own taste yet criticize others for theirs? Hypocrite much? Just because someone doesn't like a band doesn't automatically make them shit and you don't have to like just one type of band. Hell my favourite bands are Metallica and Evanescence, both amazing in their own respects. I'm sick of people on this and many other websites being so closed minded they can't see beyond their angst ridden fingers banging on the keyboard.

Posted by Gary | April 27, 2011 1:39 PM | Reply to this

In my opinion metallica have had maybe three good albums...yet these albums just so happen to be some of the best metal albums in the universe.
Of course i'm talking about Black album...Master of Puppets and Ride the lightning.
I can't wait for this album :-D

Posted by Jake2112 | April 27, 2011 4:58 PM | Reply to this

How anyone can accuse Metallica of being samey when today's popular bands are all too predictable is ridiculous. From 1982-1988 they practically invented and defined thrash metal. From the Black Album onwards, they put metal right back into the mainstream and they stayed there throughout with more rock-orientated albums Load and Reload. They then went right back into a mainstream metal direction with St. Anger and finally Death Magnetic. Not to mention the classical S&M album.

While since the Black Album the results have been somewhat variable to say the least, to call them predictable and samey is galling. Sure, they're not the most innovative, but they're still a step ahead of most popular metal bands and have the sales to prove it. If only today's bands had the same sense of adventure, then maybe they might go down in history with a few million album sales, or more importantly, an undeniable influence on their respective scene.

Posted by Peter | April 27, 2011 5:16 PM | Reply to this

After the black album it got bad. St Anger was atrocious . . . Then Death Magnetic was listenable. I think I could take another Metallica album. They do change their sound but still . . . . I can't wait for Sonisphere and seeing them live will be a tick from my Bucket List. They deserve everything they have. Say what you like about them . . . lets see you try it. You be famous for 3 decades then tell me how Metal you are or how much money you haven't spent. If I had the cash I would do the exact same and nobody can tell me they wouldn't because we all would. So good luck with yourselves oh-so-high and mighty judges of the Metal!

Posted by Mitch | April 27, 2011 5:46 PM | Reply to this

Its funny that some people here are defending Metallica based on the number of albums they have sold - you must be huge Lady ga ga fans because she sells a lot too.
Like every band, when they get a certain amount of success they lose a bit of their creativity because the hunger is not as strong as when they started. Metallica's best days are well behind them but if they still want to make albums, good luck to them - at least they are doing what they want for a living.

Bill

Your statement about fan's tastes based on album sales doesn't hold water. I'm not particularly fond of Lady Gaga or her fellow artists but that's another matter altogether.

I agree, as time goes on, that creative spark does begin to diminish. For every fan that wants something different, you've got four or five other people wanting more of the same and it's the whole 'if it ain't broke...' mechanic. It works for AC/DC and I'm sure it works for other bands too. But it comes down to the quality of that work and the hunger and desire as much as anything else. Metallica have benefitted in recent years from the popularity and success achieved from their first five albums. And while their later work is certainly open to opinion, you can't deny they certainly have the fire inside them to carry on even after all these years. And they certainly still show the younger bands a thing or two as well.

@Peter
If some twits are using album sales as evidence for the quality of a band, the statement could hold an ocean.

Regarding your comment on Metallica's ability to show younger bands how its done is spot on as I reckon a bad day for Metalica is better than a lot of younger bands best days - even without the fire they had during those first 5 albums. You've got to have something to make it that stage in the first place.

I reckon it would be a pain in the arse listening to people constantly telling you how your band should sound. Obviously it would be interesting but knowing that its impossible to make everyone happy, you'd have to end up thinking "Stuff what people want, I'm doing what I think sounds good"

Metallica are fan fucking tastic...end of. Some of you lot here that don't like 'em, well that's up to you, and it's your loss. For me they have written some of the best metal of ALL time, i also love Maiden for the same reason. Back in 1989 I discovered Metallica and metal in general, the first album I ever heard of theirs (and one that truly blew me away) was '...And Justice for All', I was 14 years old, and loving just getting into it all, and back then it was the best stuff i'd ever heard in my life. I am now 35 years old, and still passionate about rock and metal music, and have got into MANY MANY bands, and seen pretty much all the major rock and metal acts live that i need to see. Although I love loads of bands now, I still have that same buzz/passion for Maiden and Metallica even now that i had way back then. To be honest a lot of this modern stuff just sounds the same to me, and as far as this so called Emo stuff goes...good god, if i had to listen to that crap i really would want to top myself lol, but they have their fans the same, probably loads of 14 year olds just getting into it like i did with Metallica and Maiden etc. All i can say is long live Metallica, they still make fantastic music/albums, and god they are fucking awesome live....nuff said me thinks. Cheers \m/

Obviously the people commenting here need someone less biased and full of hatred to comment. I listen to a wide variety of music ranging from blues and jazz to death and black metal. If I don't like a band that doesn't make them shit, it means they're not my taste. Metallica are great musicians, as mentioned earlier in this thread the first four albums defined thrash metal, but Metallica are in no way or form predictable. Noone expected Load or ReLoad. Noone expected St.Anger to sound how it did, nor did they expect the sound of Death Magnetic. Metallica changed their sound in order to get in touch with their influences and roots, hence the Garage Inc. cover album. It's admirable how a band with the success and respectability of Metallica keep working and aim to please their fans to as high an extent as possible. People should just grow up, let people listen to what they want to, and learn not to be internet trollers. Once you reach the talent and success of the bands you critisize, then come back here and make an idiot out of yourself. Peace.

TBH i think all the haters really need to keep their opinins to themselves if u dont like metallica then dont waste ur time reading comments and then posting ur own, comment on the music u like, i for one love all of metallicas songs apsolutely all of them, death magnetic sounded all the same to me but thats my opinion and tbh i still loved it, no one can agree on musical taste because we are all different and i respect that, and yes 90 metallica wasnt exactly the greatest decade for them but james had been in rehab for ages so lars was writing the songs and maybe he wanted a break from headbanging for a while and wanted to experiment with different vibes but their back now and i have high hopes for the new album of which i will spend my har earned cash to buy as soon as its released and i will play it full blast until i get arrested or bored XD
