Slayer bassist honoured by Chilean city

Slayer bassist Tom Araya was presented with the key to the Chilean coastal city of Vina del Mar yesterday (June 3).

He was honoured during a ceremony by the city's mayor Virginia Reginato, just hours before the band's headline show at the Gimnasio Polideportivo.

Araya was born in Vina del Mar on June 6, 1961 and moved to the U.S. with his family when he was five years old.

"I think it's awesome," said Araya during a press conference. "I'm kind of speechless; I don't what to say. They're probably gonna change the locks when they give me the key!

"You see other people receive rewards like that, but it's usually people of political status or someone that's really done something for the community or done something important," he added. "All I can say is thank you."

Slayer will play Sonisphere at Knebworth on July 8. For tickets, click here.
