Slipknot to honour late bassist at Knebworth

Slipknot have announced plans to hold a special tribute in remembrance of their late bassist Paul Gray at Sonisphere on July 10.

The band - who will headline the Apollo Arena stage that night - have asked festival goers to pay their respects to Gray with a two minute silence across the whole festival site, beginning at 2pm.

Gray died of an accidental drug overdose on May 24, 2010.

For full festival details, visit this location.

Be sure to check out our story of Slipknot's emotional live return at Sonisphere Greece in new issue of Kerrang!, out Wednesday.

Keep your brain dead comments to yourself you pathetic bitch , and go and support paramore or 30STM who both need to be put in a gas chamber !!!!!! You're probably one of these type who think you're into rock and metal due to the pretty boys in xyz band ! RIP PAUL !!!!!!m

gray was a big loss to the band and fans but for fucks sake move on, the guy is not a legend across the rock/metal scene just in the 'knot bubble. now if your talking paying respects lets have a minutes silence for the loss of dignity.

Its official, the brain-dead scence harlots have taken over Kerrang. R.I.P. Paul. He may not have been a legend but Im sure he was a decent human being. And thats all what really mattered.

Posted by Jarhead | June 27, 2011 6:03 PM | Reply to this

Respect this and just leave a constructive comment.
We are dealing with a death here and if slipknot want to pay respects with the Knebworth crowd, then fair dues.

Just stinks of some horrid people on here with no decent values.
Now FOAD!

Katie fuck you bitch. Dexter fuck you. Sam fuck off. I bet your all 13/14 thinking you total fucking brutal listening to 'Black Veil Brides, & Blink 182' and leaving these comments... It would be a different story if it was someone from one of your favourite bands or family, Have some respect! Paul is dead, he has done more and achived more than you ever will. But I hope you achive what you want out of life to. but. Let him rest in peace. There is NO! need for your sick comments.

Posted by roo | June 27, 2011 6:41 PM | Reply to this

Please all you haters, can you leave us alone. We have done nothing to disrespect your music choices, infact, nearly all of us will like at least one of your fauvourite bands. Paul Gray's death was a tragic event, and the wounds are still fresh. It's only been over a year for the guys in Knot, and they've all been friends for nearly 15 years. They will need time to recover from this. And Dexter, not much has been said about Paul since his death, other than the announcment, Sonisphere plans and his anniversary. R.I.P Paul, we all still miss you

Good god there are some brain dead people on this site. Isnt music supposed to bring us all together for fucks sake. R.I.P Paul Grey. Fuck the haters

Posted by Booty | June 27, 2011 7:27 PM | Reply to this

How sad it is that there are some ppl who cant just do one little thing for someone else, Slipknot have asked if the ppl of sonisphere could give 2 mins to be silent to let the fans and band members show their respect to someone who they thought a lot of - seriously would it kill you to do that instead of bitching and moaning about it, 2 mins is not a lot of time !

Posted by Mo | June 27, 2011 7:27 PM | Reply to this

I'm bored of hearing about Gray and the Rev every single day on here.
It was sad when they died but it was a long time ago now. The best way to get over a death is to stop talking about it every damn day.

Posted by Alex | June 27, 2011 8:03 PM | Reply to this

It is quite incredible somebody claimed that Tom Delonge is a legend. Was that a joke comment? Let's be honest he is an absolutely terrible live performer. Somebody also claimed that Paramore and 30stm are better, that is a laugh. It was sad that he died and it would have been a lot better if it was Hayley Williams had died instead. That would have been a good day for music. The deaths of Paul or the rev aren't discussed as much as the irrelevant articles that kerrang seem to report on shite such as Paramore and fucking 30stm and youmeatsix.

Posted by sam219 | June 27, 2011 9:20 PM | Reply to this

I'm actually dreading this... Because I know that there will be loads of jerks that will shout and scream during the silence just to piss people off, and it'll cause a lot of trouble...

And Slimmy, Hayley Williams dying would be a baaad day for music, because she'd be branded a 'legend' and we wouldn't stop hearing about her. At least Paul Grey isn't talked about as much and he actually is a legend, as a part of Slipknot :)

...you're being trolled.

Not sure how well this'll go down at Knebworth. I'm hoping well, because I assume people have respect for the dead. Not sure the band playing at 2 will be too happy though. :/

I dnt think they should have 2 mins silence. I think every1 shud go fuckin mental and make as much noise as possible so wherever paul grey is he can hear that he is stil loved by the metal world!!!
Slipklnot defined a generation n if u dnt like slipknot stop postin bullshit about em on here n b respectful!!!!! U wouldn't no good music if it smacked u in the face complete tossers!!!

To be fair Katie, I think your comment was a little disrespectful.. however sarra, bringing other bands in to this such as 30stm and paramore is no way to retaliate. we all love different kinds of rock, so people just need to respect that. I love all 3 bands, so stop bitching and keep your opinions to yourself if it is going to offend someone. I thought rock was partly about being different, so if anything we all have something in common. so shush pissing each other off! RIP Paul Gray, you will be missed by people around the world.

Posted by ellie | June 28, 2011 10:12 AM | Reply to this

Rest in peace paul grey. Any disrespectuf comments on here aren't necessary. All the awards that we're given out on the night we're well deserved by all the acts that won then! I love You Me At Six therefor i was over the moon when they won. Ellie's right, people need to keep their opinions to thereselves so that it doesn't upset some people. That's all. Thanks.

you may find (aimed at the people who don't call paul gray a legend) that he is classed as one, he had more skill in his little fingers than most bands which are posted on kerrang's website.

he used all forms of bass techniques in slipknot songs. even slap bass during "bitchslap" not many metal bassists would do something like that

at least the people on METALHAMMER are agreeing with the sentiment.

R.I.P paul. the legend.

Posted by jd | June 28, 2011 12:32 PM | Reply to this

SLIPKNOT for me are lousy music but live are a fantastic band. ... There's a lot of kids on here bitching cos they don't agree with other opinions. Paul Gray does not qualify for legendary status.. He probably was a nice bloke but he fucked up with an overdose that stopped any chance of him becoming a legend. Ronnie James Dio passed around the same time. He was legendary due to the amount of classic albums he made during his long lived career.. And he didn't pass from his own stupidity. .. Having a two mins silence at 2pm is a bit egotistical... Have it during Slipknots performance.where it'll actually mean something and doesn't affect non fans from enjoying other bands performances. Rest in peace Paul Gray.

Posted by Johnnybugga | June 28, 2011 1:19 PM | Reply to this

@JD, that's because Metal Hammer themselves are absolute mongoloids. I hold nothing against Slipknot, or Gray, but he wouldn't have attained "legend" status had he not expired, it shows how mindlessly retarded the "Maggots" truly are.

Posted by The Messiah | June 28, 2011 1:25 PM | Reply to this

2pm?

As if anyone is going to remember that, they might as well do it during their set, Corey chats enough shit between songs to fill about 15 minutes anyway.

Posted by Gavin Critchley | June 28, 2011 1:45 PM | Reply to this

@katie.

Please don't force you opinions on other people, personally, i am a big fan of them, so if you're looking for people to hate you then go for it, shitbag

Posted by Elena | June 28, 2011 4:46 PM | Reply to this

I know Gray meant a lot to the 'knot crowd and even more to the guys in the band but even the biggest fan of the band has got to admit a 2 min silence is cringeworthy. I, by the way am a 42 yr old bloke who has been around the block and love all styles of rock, metal etc and have seen many a hero of mine come and go but never have I heard anything so ridiculous or self serving as proposing this silence. Hanging his costume to the side of the drum riser, well there's something people can appreciate. Gray himself, i'm sure, would be mildly embarrassed by this. RIP common sense.

Posted by Dave | June 28, 2011 5:03 PM | Reply to this

@Elena, sorry to be the one to tell you this, but you're using something known as the "Internet" on a website, annoying people on something known as a "Forum" these magical things allow anyone to say whatever they like, and I doubt that'll change because you don't agree with someone else's opinion.

Posted by Sir Daniel Fortesque | June 28, 2011 5:22 PM | Reply to this

Even though i'm not going to Sonisphere, i'm still going to have a 2 minute silence for him.

RIP Paul Gray

Posted by Duffman | June 28, 2011 6:33 PM | Reply to this

Just as a foot note to this ever growing debate, is it not possible that asking all festival goers to repect this silence is asking for trouble? Without doubt, NOT everyone present will be a Slipknot fan and will NOT feel the need to remain quiet let alone silent as they down their umpteenth pint of beer, which in turn all the 'maggots' in close proximity will take exception to and surely a unsightly brawl of hideous proportions will ensue. Someone with sense should think about this, as previously mentioned, something on the lines of a minutes rapturous applause during the Slipknot show would be far more appropriate and, in my opinion, more a fitting tribute to the man they lost not so long ago........

Do you mean when Blink 182 can actually be bothered playing live? I have been to lots of concerts and I can honestly say Blink are one of the worst I have seen and I don't even mind them that much but live they are awful. Tom has the worst live voice.

Posted by Jim | June 29, 2011 1:52 PM | Reply to this

You just know that someone's gonna be a dick and start screaming shit during the two minute silence.

Posted by Shannan | June 29, 2011 2:51 PM | Reply to this

Music isn't supposed to create divides between people, it's meant to be a way for people to communicate. When you have nothing in common with a person, music is meant to bridge over that gap.

So can someone please tell me why everyone is fighting over 'who is better' on an article marking a man's death (I'd also like to point out that he is a human being, a son, friend, brother as well as musician) Is this really what we have come to?
Cause if it is, that's just plain sad.

I miss and love Paul Grey

Hi im a slipknot fan and does any fan know why paul gray was taking drugs for. It was accidental but isnt it a bad thing for a star to be doing drugs doesnt it put them in a typical catagory like when people say they take drugs just because they can and look down at it if you get me. He shoudnt have being using drugs,... were they illegal drugs or was it medicine for a reason ? thanks
