Sixer. LOL.

Posted by ellen | August 31, 2011 2:05 PM | Reply to this

Oh the lameness.......Kerrang you have outdone yourself today.....what the fuck is a sixer? i always thought it was a group leader term used in the Girl Guides. And as for Avenger......I see no Iron Man or Thor?!!!!!!!!

Adult rock fans don't need wanky nicknames to segregate them out. In the most generic terms, 4 of your cartoons look like douchey emo kids anyway! With a token rapper and a Slipknot fan thrown in for good measure.

Quit wasting reader's time with bullshit articles like this and get down to interviewing interesting and intelligent artists about things that matter. Not everyone who reads your magazine is 12 you know!

Aren't all rock/metal fans just fans, regardless of what sub genre they listen to/like/love?

Unification not separation is needed in a dying music industry.

Posted by Shortie | August 31, 2011 2:49 PM | Reply to this

@Matt

It's not fun, It's retarded!
I've seen more insightful quizzes in an issue of 'Seventeen' magazine and all they talk about there is first periods and crushes on boyband members.

kerrang needs to grow a pair and quit aiming their demographic at preteen girls who like black nail polish and whiny songs by boys with daft fringes.

If this is the level for current rock fans then Jimi Hendrix, Kurt Cobain, John Bonham and Dimebag Darrell must be rolling in their graves.

"You may have been a good smuggler, but now you're Bantha fodder!"

@Emily Last time I checked MTV, all the big boy thug rappers dressed like that, aside from the added Avenged Sevenfold graphic on the character's vest (presumably to 'rock it up a little'?)

@Peachy - Took a look at your site, a very good idea. Wish something similar had been around when I was younger, good luck with that.

@jabba

Sorry I didn't realise everything in a magazine had to be serious, and why can't it kerrang have a bit of retarded fun.

But personally, ignoring you and your misplaced anger at a little quiz, i I agree with Shortie, rock music gets ignored at the mecury awards all the time and most clubs are filled up with quite awful dubstep and other sorts of music that is more painful than a couple stabs in the ear, so why then do a quiz to split up rock fans.

Fuck sub-genre! Its all rock/metal in the end

Posted by Matt | August 31, 2011 3:15 PM | Reply to this

Did I say it had to be serious?

How about using the two page spread this no doubt took up and interview a decent artist with something to say about their music instead? Or instead of peddling the same old available shite artists day in, day out, they could put some effort in like Kerrang used to (in the not too distant past) and gain exclusive interviews with bands who don't do many interviews, maybe take their time between albums and have a thought process higher than 'shoot generic poprock at tweenagers and merchandise the hell outta our faces.'

Just a thought...

Wish I wasn't in the US and could take this quiz... I'd probably end up as MCRmy anyway, haha.

Posted by Jessica | August 31, 2011 3:26 PM | Reply to this

I personally 100% agree with Jabba. KERRANG! has hit a new low recently. It's all pop rock for fan GIRLS ages 12-16... Not suprised if future issues will include make-up & glitter... its coming folk. ._.

Posted by Luke | August 31, 2011 3:53 PM | Reply to this

oh god, i get confused as it is with all the different types of rock, prog rock, hard rock, post-hardcore, i liked it more when i could just say i was a rock/metal fan.

kerrang has really started going downhill lately, they used to do these types of quizzes in animals & you, which i read when i was 8. if you need a quiz to classify you as a type of fan, then you're only listening to this kind of music for the superficial image of it, 'emo' 12 year old girls, i'm looking at you here.

also, @jubba, a sixer is the leader of a brownie six, not girl guides (making it more amusing since then they're only 7-9 years old). just had to throw that in there, i'm a young leader with a guide unit (;

@Katie - I didn't realise it was Brownies, thanks for the correction and yes that does make it more amusing! Sounds about the right age they are aiming for with this crap quiz!

I also agree with your points, apparently image is everything to kerrang readers now, so much so they have to label themselves as 'sixers' or 'GC Fam' or 'avengers (I can't get over that one, watch out Kerrang or you'll have Marvel suing your ass!) . Back when I was 16, in my neck of the woods rock fans were labelled 'grungers' but only by everyone else who wasn't into rock music. We saw no need for labels or names within the community,just plain old rock and metal music fans.

Posted by jabba | August 31, 2011 4:57 PM | Reply to this

I despair. Plain rock/metal fan here. In the same boat of the other 99% of us who don't need such labels.

And the "what type of rock person are you" thing...its just a laugh...get over it, its not like next week the magazine is going to be cut.

I used to buy Kerrang magazine every week, back when they seemed to realise metal was part of their genre. Every single magazine is filled with pop punk crap, I've started buying Metal Hammer instead, it covers metal and rock, without trying to sell itself to 10 year old 'emo' kids.

@Jabba, you're completely right, and the people who're moaning at you for badmouthing Kerrang for covering pop punk 24/7, need to have a good look at what rock music actually is.

Posted by Ciaran | August 31, 2011 9:16 PM | Reply to this

I thought this was fun. Especially if you don't like the bands that are mentioned.
Also can we stop with the "aimed at 12 year olds" crap.
I am thirteen and yes I like MCR. I also like Iron Maiden, Dead Kennedys and the older Green Day not just the new stuff.
I also like Beethoven and Pachlbel got a problem with that?
We all like the music, we all like the magazine so what's the problem?
Also it's just ONE article, not the end of the world.

Posted by Friday13 | August 31, 2011 9:26 PM | Reply to this

I don't see the point in the article but that's my opinion.
I listen to avenged sevenfold but if someone ever called me an avenger I would slap them in the face. That lable makes me sound like a power ranger or something.
I guess this is either a love or hate quiz but I don't really care... I'm gonna go buy metal hammer now!

Posted by Sigh... | August 31, 2011 9:45 PM | Reply to this

@HarryFoo. I had to laugh at this, the magazine has always pandered to the same audience. It has never cared about anything other than what's popular.

@Will. Rocksound is equally as terrible.

I read a guy's comment about buying Metal Hammer, please don't. Metal Hammer absolutely blows. I suggest venturing to a site known as blabbermouth.net, though be warned, the people on there are scum, but on this plus side, there's no need to spend your parents cash.

Posted by The Messiah | August 31, 2011 10:19 PM | Reply to this

Kerrang isn't going downhill. They reached rock bottom a long time ago. A once respectable rock magazine now just a laughing stock. Not everybody is saying it has to be metal but it has to be good rock and metal music and covering pop acts such as youmeatsix and parabore don't fall in to either of these categories. Kerrang only ever cover pop acts like these. They will throw in a legendary band every now and then to try restore some credibility but those days are long gone.

Like The Messiah has pointed out, blabbermouth.net give it a try. It's certainly better than this.

Posted by Caitlin Dow | September 1, 2011 9:50 AM | Reply to this

I'm glad to see this has raised so many opinions about the current state of the magazine, good or bad. Kerrang needs to do more market research into its readership and what they feel needs to be improved and what things should be covered. I'm sure there are many people who visit this site to get news but have given up on the magazine due to too much childish content. Appeal to your whole audience, 12/13 year old kids these days are pretty screwed on and don't need dumbed down articles, they can handle adult music journalism, give them some credit! For all the people bemoaning how Kerrang used to be a good mag 10 years ago (I agree with this), there should be an outlet to say the K! editors what features and articles used to be so good and what maybe they should drop from the current format.

Theres a lot of unhappy longtime readers out there Kerrang, perhaps a readership survey is overdue?

between the countless adverts the dodgy quizes to stick us all in boxes and the posters (wow its smash hits again) i stopped buying k a long time ago...cant remember the last time i thumbed through it and saw a decent interview!

Posted by wendy | September 1, 2011 2:35 PM | Reply to this

@ the Messiah, so you found it really funny? well ofcourse a magazine willbe about the popular bands,ussually the popular bands are the good ones ,thats why they are popular.ofcourse there are some bands that are good but didnt become famous,or musicians which were good but did not succeed. popular music is not a bad thing.there are many bands that are populart and are great.i think indie killed the music ha,focusing on the haircats and not the music as they used to do in the 90s.
rocksound used to be a very good magazine back then.I remember their cds were awesome.every month I woyld discover at least 2 or 3 bands,or at least ther would be at least a couple of songs that would stand out in the cd and make you listen to it over and over.the last years, their cds are crap, no good bands to promote like they used to,

Posted by harryfoo | September 1, 2011 3:00 PM | Reply to this

jabba for president. ha
you couldnt say it better. and not only kerrang ,i think rocksound has the same problem. I remember every now and then you would discover something good but now its like nothing new is happening,small bands that dont last long.its you cant say that suddenly good bands stoped existing!something is wrong for sure.

Posted by harryfoo | September 1, 2011 3:08 PM | Reply to this

Gotta be honest, I do like K! but the whole pop punk thing is gettin on my nerves and I totally agree that they should metal up a bit, even on ktv theres a shit load of stuff that u can hear and see on Q, Smash Hits etc. K! readers buy into it for the metal and always have, but it seems they're turning away from metal these days to more radio friendly rock. Bring back the rock/metal days, and what KERRANG used to stand for

Posted by trick | September 1, 2011 5:18 PM | Reply to this

Oh God Kerrang, this is rather bad...

Can't we just all be rock/metal fans and get along without being subdivided and categorised?

Besides, if anything, I'm a Child Of The Fence (Coheed fan). Look them up, most dedicated fan click around. But I bet even they'd agree that you can't classify people musically.

@jabba

Considering you take STAR WARS quotes on a rock music page I don't think you're the hipster of this page. It's just a bit of fun but if you don't like it, then read something shit-boring like The Times, instead of whining about a music magazine you can do fuck-all about.

Posted by Howardax | September 2, 2011 10:24 AM | Reply to this

Sorry jabba, but it's only what the magazine can publish and i actually didn't want to offend ya! And for the rest of you, if you don't like the music (admittedly the pop-punk in the magazine is SHIT; I'm a slipknot/korn guy BTW) then don't blame the magazine, as it is only publishing what they think is closer to rock. Instead form proper bands - that's I'm doing to try and put good old metal back to where it belongs - and fight the pop-bullcrap menace!

The Quiz is pretty stupid, Music is fluid, we don't have to be put into any catagory or stereotype just because we like that music.
Kerrang! shoulda used that page/s to interview rock bands who don't get enough media attention espcially female rock bands and female fronted rock bands, we pretty much hardly ever hear about except Hayley Willams (as much as i love her im sick of hearing about her) why not throw in a Joan Jett interview some time? that would make my bloody year!

@Howardax - We don't get The Times that often on Tatooine, Royal Mail's a bitch out here.

They publish the crap they do because it's popular with casual tweeny fans who spend their pocket money on Kerrang. They could change but I'm afraid money is the goal here. The problem is this alienates a large portion of the audience who don't care who that ginger Parawhore girl is fucking or what her favourite toothpaste is.

I'm not necessarily asking for more metal per say ( i've tried to stray away from pinpointing what artist or music I'd rather see as my choice will be different to your choice) but more in depth album reviews, proper interviewing, more variety and dropping the childish sections like this article and that twitter feed section would help.

Also not categorising their fans into made up sub-genres like 'avengers or sixers'. I like rock n roll, I don't need a flimsy title to differentiate myself or what I should or shouldn't wear.

On a side note - @georgejett a interview with Joan Jett would be fantastic and probably a lot more informative than interviewing bands barely above being kids themselves. i'd much rather hear stories about her past and thoughts on the future of the industry than another bland quiz.

Posted by Mike | September 2, 2011 2:47 PM | Reply to this

the only 2 i know are real here are MCRmy and the maggots, these are not for "labeling" fans but simply a place where the fans can find people who care as much about the band as they do.

Yes i am 15 and yes i am in the MCRmy and have to admit that i have made some great friends because of it.

Kerrang do these things because there target audience IS this age group, rock fans have grown up and out of this age range while reading it and so now find it silly but it will be here for the next generation when we grow out of it and i'm sure i will find things in it childish but that is how it works

Posted by seb | September 2, 2011 5:25 PM | Reply to this

Target audience or not, it never used to be as childish as it has become. There has always been a sense of discovering rock music and starting reading the mag at a younger age but it doesn't mean it has to aim itself so squarely at children.

As I stated above, kids of 12/13 nowadays aren't dumb, they can read as adults not 7 year olds which to me is who this quiz was aimed at. Would you @seb prefer to read dumbed down articles aimed at primary school kids or something intellectually stimulating and exciting about bands you may like?

Posted by jabba | September 2, 2011 5:33 PM | Reply to this

@jabba
okay you seem to have a point there about how it won t seem interesting to older readers, but with how the internet has taken over all magazines like Kerrang have to try to grab on to what they can to survive. sure its a shame that they have resulted to such thing as these style quizzes to decide which fan group you are in but without all the kids buying this magazine it would probably go bust

Posted by seb | September 2, 2011 5:51 PM | Reply to this

@seb - Yes that is true, it ihas come down to being all about the money and selling out to achieve success. Since Kerrang's publishers were taken over and the appointment of a very sloppy editor who seemed to want to turn Kerrang into Smash Hits, it has been exactly that.

i had hoped that the now new current editor might make some positive changes but this quiz is an example of going backwards, not forwards.

As for the internet, sometimes, just the same as a newspaper, you just want to sit back and read a magazine and not stare at a screen (especially if, like me, you work in an industry that's very computer based). Before the internet, Kerrang was my only way to find out about gigs and read articles about my favourite bands that other publications ignored. times have changed indeed. But that doesn't mean good rock journalism should go down the toilet to satisfy the lowest common denominator..

I hope the DO put make-up in the next issue, so people who think Kerrang is "going down hill" will finally fuck off. It's one little quiz in the name of...oh what do they call it?...having fun? Yeah that's the one! Everyone who is pissed off over a little quiz really needs to get a grip. And what does it matter that younger people are reading Kerrang? Isn't it better that younger peope are listening to music that reaches people on an emotional level, not just bragging about how much money and sex the 'artist' has and how their life is so much better than yours?

Posted by Kelsie | September 5, 2011 4:47 PM | Reply to this

@kelsie
I don't mind young people reading Kerrang, I just feel that that shouldn't mean the articles have to so squarely aimed at children. I'm unsure of how old you are but I'm sure you don't still read magazines aimed at 9 year olds? The magazine should give young people more credit, they are, for the most part, more intelligent than this crap. But hey if you like reading the same type of article found in the latest issue of 'In the Night Garden' then please be my guest!

@kelsie
I don't mind young people reading Kerrang, I just feel that that shouldn't mean the articles have to so squarely aimed at children. I'm unsure of how old you are but I'm sure you don't still read magazines aimed at 9 year olds? @Kelsie Well said in my opinion. It's just a little bit of fun. People used to have it you know before getting accused of not being 'rock' enough because they like certain bands more than others or that they are younger than other people who buy this magazine.

@younger people ha
To all the younger people who think that they know what we are talking about. well, you cant really know what we are talking about because 10 years ago you were 3 or 5 at least, couldnt read yet. and obvioysly you didnt know how kerrang was back then.just get an old eddition of kerrang from the 90s and compare it with the last one. the only thing missing in the last one is barbie.maybe its not kerrangs fauls, it might just be that the music bussiness is in crisis,but they were used to be more interesting bands back then.just compare the bands of the 90s with the recent bands that came out the last 5 years.can you really compare?
if you think that the quiz was just a little bit of fun, well it is because you are 10 years old and thats ok, but we are not. next time kerrang put a lolipop inside for the babies as well.

@harryfoo dude do you want a fucking prize for the fact you read Kerrang 10 years ago?
Age is not something anyone has control over and most young rock fans get enough shit from people their own age without having people like you saying that they can't have an opinion.

@People raging: no one is forcing you to buy Kerrang, in fact id bet most people don't bother buying if they are this mad.

If you paid attention you would notice that once a month they feature a more underground band on the cover (e.g. letlive, rolo tomassi) and every week they normally have at least one article about a "tr00" metal band.

The reason they put band like MCR, Avenged Sevenfold and 30 Seconds to Mars so much is simply because they sell well and draw the younger readers in. If a "13 year old girl" buys Kerrang reads a review of the new Devin Townsend or Shining album and gives it a try then Kerrang has done its job.

Im in my early 20s but i imagine this happens every ten years. In the 90s older fans shit on young fans for enjoying nu metal, in the 80s older fans shit on younger fans for liking hair metal and in 10 years time 13 year old Paramore fans will be shitting on Dubstep metal or whatever the latest craze is.

Personally i dont like the majority of cover stars but a lot of people do. If you want to read about Chimaira and Orange Goblin every week, read something else. In the next few months Mastodon and Machine Head will be on the cover. Will you be happy then? Probably not because You Me At 6 will be on page 38.

I am a music writer by profession and it is still my dream to one day write for Kerrang because like it or not they have been going for around 30 years. they must be doing something right

Everyone raging; look at yourselves. Look at what you've done. This page was supposed to be a fan page that was something fun and now you've gone and turned it into the riots. Just because kerrang have an interesting quiz, why do you automatically ASSUME it's for five-year-olds? What is the point of stereotyping music and the magazine when a lot of people give each other enough crap about liking rock/metal instead of motherfuckin' justin beiber. Find something boring and graveyard serious like metalhammer if you don't like this, instead of taking a dump on a magazine you have no control over.

Oh the insanity. I do have to wonder about the people that comment on the pages they quite obviously despise. You'd think it would be a waste of their time. After all, they wind themselves up reading them and force a wedge between fans, despite some preaching about keeping the fans together.

Yes, I agree that it is important to interview bands, and when they are interviewed I will read them. But would you really want a magazine full of bands that are hounded for interviews? They need a break sometimes you know. This quiz is just a bit of mindless fun. Don't take life so seriously.

Oh and for the record, I'm in the MCRmy. Killjoys Make Some Noise! :D

Oh and also, for those who think this is for 12 year old emo girls... I'm 18 and think stereotyping is a bunch of crap ^__^

Jesus I didn't think Kerrang could sink any lower... I stopped buying this over a year ago after I grew ashamed of being seen with it- Black Veil Brides on the cover was bad enough. Wouldn't wipe my arse with Kerrang nowadays.

ha. i wish the non-rockers still called us grungers. now its emo just because a few people wear skinny jeans or whatever the hell their reason is for calling us that.
