Gay For Johnny Depp call it a day

New York post-hardcore quartet Gay For Johnny Depp have announced that they are to disband.

The band cite the global recession as one of the reasons behind the decision.

"Due to the financial meltdown in Italy and the devaluation of the Euro in contrast to the U.S. Dollar the Gay for Johnny Depp band have decided to call it quits," reads a not entirely serious statement from the band. "We extend a hearty and worthy hand to our fellow colleagues and wish everyone all the best in whatever future endeavours they may have in store for them. Until the next life, stay beautiful."

The band have also filmed a video statement but we were too chicken to watch it, what with their live reputation and all.

music shouldn't be about making money and acting like a douche it should be if you enjoy it or not

However, jake, if they arent making enough money to survive, then they need to spend more time trying to find a way to survive the winter, so to speak.

However, jake, when you arent making enough money to live by, you need to look to the more profitable options in order to survive.
Enjoying making music wont buy you food, or pay your rent.

However, Clara, if they really liked what they do they could still make music together. I myself am in a band which makes me no money whatsoever but i fund myself for the enjoyment of it. My friends band tour the UK atleast twice a year and they do it buy having jobs and funding themselves.

I see where you are coming from tho.

if a band has no money they cannot carry on if it's their full time job.
they need the money to pay for touring, which acctualy costs a hell of a lot to do; you need to buy food, transport, a way to get your instruments around, and so on.

I think they meant the band were fucking around reason-wise. The economy is blamed for everything so they bring in random economic statistics and blame them

Ok these guys are taking the piss... And this time it's not funny. If they're going to disband, at least have a proper reason - they're not affected by the recession any less than we are. And perhaps they ARE doing it for the money... Even though getting money is important (good point @Clara), for a true musician, money should remain a bonus, not the objective itself for being in a band. If the band themselves are good guys (I ain't playing the "faggots" card - check out the Andy Six broken nose page... Poor guy) which they probably are, they should realise that being a true musician should be about the music - a trait which is never seen anymore in modern music.

I never normally post on these things, but some of you are being retarded.
1. as not serious guys says, this statement is the band having a laugh. I'm pretty sure they are a humorus band who constantly have jokes with the audience, look at the name and listen to their songs for fuck sake! they probably have split up for a normal boring reason as most bands do, ie they got bored of the music, each other, their city, touring etc etc. However, in keeping with the spirit og GFJD they've released a humorus statement, WHAT A SURPRISE!!! If they said they had split up over global warming would you have believed them!?
2. although, as should be obvious from above, I feel they did not split up for monetary reason, I will now explain why that is not an out of this world reason to do so. bands that do it alongside full time jobs, are not a full time band. they may tour lots but if they are having to keep a full time job along side it, then they are not a full time band. doesn't them make any less of musicians. GFJD were a full time band who tour all over the world and who's only income is their band. if that income drops considerably, they can't just get jobs as they already have a job, their full time band. most bands have a shelf life and then income will slow. if they have made lots of money then they can ride the lower income times if they haven't then they need to either scale it right back, (think Kerbdog and Leftside Brain) and just play one off shows and small tours as smaller bands do, or disolve band, find a new one with a longer shelf life to give your self another income. this is the same in all walks of life, it doesn't mean your greedy you just want to be able to live how you wish. anyways, let hope the form a new band soon!

I love how people say its not about the money! IT IS! If members of the band have family's they need to support them. Being in a band is a job - You release an album, you tour the album, you release the merchandise, you relase singles. All of which helps the band members pay the fucking bills!

Read an interview with Geoff Rickley frontman of Thursday (Found in a real magazine called the ALTERNATIVE PRESS). It states that Thursday members need to get part time jobs when their not on tour to help fund albums, pay rent, pay bills etc.

People who play instruments NEED fucking money!!!! Quit being naive! I cant beleive people say its about the music. If it was about the music they'd give the fucking profits of gigs, merch sales album sales etc to FUCKING CHARITIES!!!!!!!!
