Metallica for Download 2012!

Metallica have announced that they will headline the 10th Download Festival at Donington Park on Saturday June 9, 2012, with an exclusive UK performance of their best selling Number One album Metallica, aka The Black Album.

It will be the eighth time the legendary metallers will have played at Donington during their three decade-long career, having played both Monsters Of Rock and Download festivals.

"Six years is way too long to be away from the hallowed grounds of Donington Park," says drummer Lars Ulrich. "We are beyond psyched and feel privileged to come back once again to soak up the energy and vibe of the most legendary of festival sites."

"I am absolutely bowled over that Metallica will be playing The Black Album at the 10th anniversary of Download," says Andy Copping, VP of Promotions at Live Nation. "The album is up there as one of the greatest albums of all time, everyone knows the songs. The Download festival has come a long way since we first started in 2003 and to have Metallica back to help us celebrate this milestone is just fantastic."

Download 2012 takes place at Donington Park from June 8-10. Weekend with camping tickets go on sale 9am Friday November 18 from www.downloadfestival.co.uk and www.aloud.com.

Vodafone customers can buy tickets 48 hours before they go on general sale: 9am, Wednesday November 16 at vodafone.co.uk/vip

Download RIP ticket packages are on sale now and can be purchased via www.livenationexperience.co.uk or by phoning 0207 009 3484.

Be sure to pick up next week's Kerrang! for an interview with Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich. The issue will come bagged with a CD containing the hottest tracks of 2011.

I would've preferred Kill Em' All in it's entirety, but this is still awesome.

Give it a rest, it seems we have run out of ideas for headline acts for these festivals. Metallica are/were great but, in fact the problem is the 'market' is being saturated every summer. Here's an idea lets get the big four on, mmm had that. Maybe a hand picked Metallica bill, oh done that, let's have Lou Reed on fuck that, lets call the whole thing off because it is becoming stale me thinks.

I see where your coming from dave but i think it will be great. I know i cant get enough of Metallica and im sure it will be a great performance.

Thats ok I suppose, but having seen them 3 times in 2 years, I think I'll see what Sonisphere has up its sleeve.

Cant wait! One of the albums responsible for getting me into metal.

Agree with Dave. This is getting tedious and boring. Who the hell is going to headline our festivals when Maiden and (especially) Metallica call it a day? Biffy? Bullet? Fuck, they couldn't even stretch to an hour and a half on their arena tour, so don't go expecting any storming headline sets from the Welsh wonders any time soon...

gota admit i cant see anybody but bands that already hav legendary status headlining like in recent years there has been ac/dc iron maidan rage against the machine and system of a down. im not saying that al of those bands arent awesome but it is getting a little tedious

@Simon , you point is vaild but you have to take into account that bullet and biffy have not nearly been going long enough at madien and metalica . But i must admit it looks like downloads going to be headlined by some swishy fringed boy band soon

Well if were honest here the reason ( I think theres two ) is there's not enough support from the record labels & investors in new bands. Back in the 70's, 80's , 90's early 00's there was money invested in new music, now bands have to have "money" behind them to invest in themselves, the labels don't wanna do it at the start, to much of a risk now as they used to earn cash from record sales...thats why the "big bands" got somewhere as folk still bought vinyl, tapes cd's etc. Also attendences at gigs these days is shocking, I try n get to see as many new bands as possible but its the same old from people, "never heard of em" well ya won't if your sat in front of your pc n only ever see the bands that don't really need your hard earned pennies...so really we ourselves are to blame for this lack of choice, so our festivals will soon be the same old or tribute acts! with struggling bands battling it out in between!

I personally feel metllica playing the black album is a great thing for download. it will be insane to watch. i also feel that in years to come it will honestly be Skindred, lamb of god and Murderdolls. these are the bands that will kick ass in about 2-4 years time. skindred already have a headline slot alongside Anthrax so are already doing headline slots which is awsome. bands like this deserve it

I personally think Metallica playing the black album is brilliant. Young people like me never got to see these gods play this album when it got released, so it'll be brilliant!

At the end of the day, whatever 3 bands they get to headline, someone (every year without fail) is going to complain. we need to give the download team a rest, they cant make everyone happy, its physically impossible. everyone has different tastes. you just have to appreciate that they try their best to be diverse for everyone. at my first download, i only saw about 15 bands at most, because i wasnt in to the rest. but i didnt bitch and moan about it, because thats life. if you dont like it, dont go.. but dont fucking rain on everyone else parade. its certainly not fair on the team who work hard every year to bring the best 3 day festival they can provide. you also have to remember they might ask for certain bands, but they might say no, its not all in their power, its up to the bands too. so pipe down, and just see the bands you want to see, or dont go at all.
