AC/DC
AC/DC

"AC/DC FORMED in 1973 in Sydney, Australia around the core of guitarist Malcolm Young and his livewire brother Angus. The boys' elder sister Margaret gave their band both its name (when Malcolm spotted an AC/DC sticker on her sewing machine) and the only gimmick they would ever need: it was she who suggested that the diminutive Angus should wear a schoolboy uniform at 'DC's very first gig. Musically, the band had no time for such playfulness: AC/DC dealt in hooligan anthems, Chuck Berry-style rock 'n' roll blasted out with big power chords, bigger drums and all the 'fuck you' attitude in the world. After recruiting sex, drugs and rock 'n' roll-loving Jack-The-Lad vocalist Bon Scott (who got his gig after describing the band's previous singer as a "fucking poof") the band quickly acquired a reputation as the finest bar band in Australia, a band capable of turning every night into a Saturday night. Following their relocation to London at the height of punk rock mania, a string of shit-kicking no-nonsense hard rock albums signalled the band's global ambitions, but it was when the quintet hooked up with producer Robert John 'Mutt' Lange for 1979's 'Highway To Hell' album that they finally broke through internationally. Tragically, the band's career curve was halted when a drinking bender in London cost vocalist Scott his life in February 1980, but the stunned band quickly recruited a new vocalist in Newcastle-born Brian Johnson, and reunited with producer Lange to deliver the astonishing 'Back In Black' album in 1980 as a tribute to their late friend. The album spent an incredible 13 months in the US Top 10 turning AC/DC into the biggest band in the world and influencing literally thousands of young musicians. The past 25 years have seen the band cement their reputation as the greatest rock 'n' roll band the world has ever seen, with a series of killer albums and some of the loudest, most thrilling gigs in rock history. For those about to rock, look no further."

Back In Black
Name: Back In Black Label: ATLANTIC Year: 1980

Review: A tribute to Bon Scott, 'Back In Black' was born of tragedy but celebrated life. It's a flawless collection, each of its 10 songs an anthem etched into the minds of every rock fan - 'Hells Bells', 'You Shook Me All Night Long', the stomping title track. Rock's ultimate party album has now sold over 40 million copies worldwide, twice as many as 'Appetite For Destruction' or Metallica's 'Black' album. Now that's a comeback.

Highway to Hell
Name: Highway to Hell Label: ATLANTIC Year: 1979

Review: Reeking of sex and sin, 'Highway To Hell' was described as "songs about humping and booze" by Kerrang!'s then parent magazine 'Sounds'. It's the work of a cocksure, cock-waving band who know their time has come. With vocalist Bon Scott pouring his soul into fabulously filthy dedications to the young ladies who'd touched both his heart and crotch on the road, 'Highway To Hell' sounds impossibly alive.

If You Want Blood...
Name: If You Want Blood... Label: ATLANTIC Year: 1978

Review: Punk rock may have been grabbing headlines in the UK, but in 1978 there was no live band more powerful than the 'DC. On April 30, 1978, the band parked a mobile recording studio outside Glasgow Apollo. The result was one of the most feral live rock albums ever, with electric versions of 'Whole Lotta Rosie' and 'The Jack' in particular pissing all over their studio counterparts.

Powerage
Name: Powerage Label: ATLANTIC Year: 1978

Review: Let's be honest, few rock bands are less experimental than AC/DC. But, recorded immediately after the quintet had completed US dates supporting Aerosmith and Kiss, the band's fourth international album (the first to feature bassist Cliff Williams) was bluesier and more considered than its predecessors giving the songs more space to swing punches. 'DC purists consider it the finest album of the band's career.

The Razor's Edge (?)
Name: The Razor's Edge (?) Label: ATCO Year: 1990

Review: AC/DC don't make terrible albums but no album after 1983's 'Flick Of The Switch' has quite matched the energy and excitement of the band's blistering live shows. A massive hit in both the UK and America, 'The Razor's Edge' is probably the album most AC/DC fans will upload last onto their iPods. Saying that, the likes of 'Money Talks' and 'Are You Ready' still kick the piss out of 99 per cent of rock bands.

    Key AC/DC Tracks

  • IT'S A LONG WAY TO THE TOP (IF YOU ...

the first song on the first 'DC album outside Australia laid down a blueprint they haven't deviated from: crunching power chords, a stomping beat and a sizzling guitar solo from Angus Young aged 19. Nice bagpipes solo, too.

Find on iTunes Find It: 'High Voltage', 1976.
  • JAILBREAK

ORIGINALLY INCLUDED on the Australian version of 'Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap', this rather tragic tale concerns an old lag who finally flees his captors only to be gunned down by a prison guard. Unlucky.

Find on iTunes Find It: ''74 Jailbreak', 1984.
  • LET THERE BE ROCK

'LET THERE be sound...light...drums...guitar...Let there be ROCK!' Chuck in a teeth-rattling, crotch-kicking riff and you've got a more believable alternative to the Book Of Genesis.

Find on iTunes Find It: 'Let There Be Rock', 1977.
  • NERVOUS SHAKEDOWN

The best song on AC/DC's most underrated album. An every day tale of 'pigs' hassling innocents. Augmented by big fuck off riffs.

Find on iTunes Find It: 'Flick Of The Switch', 1983.
  • PROBLEM CHILD

ANOTHER SELF-EXPLANATORY anthem with Bon Scott slipping into character as a juvenile delinquent. The singer served nine months in a detention centre at 16 for 'unlawful carnal knowledge' and stealing petrol. Bad ass!

Find on iTunes Find It: 'Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap', 1976.
  • RIDE ON

an affecting tale of a drifter seeking to move on from past mistakes. Proof that Bon could sing like a wounded angel.

Find on iTunes Find It: 'Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap', 1976.
  • ROCK 'N' ROLL AIN'T NOISE POLLUTION

This laidback homage to bad boy boogie rounds off 'Back In Black' elegantly: 'Rock 'n' roll ain't no riddle man,' sings Johnson, 'to me it makes good, good sense'. Wise words.

Find on iTunes Find It: 'Back In Black', 1980.
  • ROCK 'N' ROLL SINGER

'WHEN I left school and grew my hair they didn't understand, they wanted me to be respected as a doctor or a lawyer man... but I had other other plans'. A glorious mission statement from Ronald Belford 'Bon' Scott, arguably the greatest rock frontman ever.

Find on iTunes Find It: 'High Voltage', 1976.
  • ROCKER

The gent in question is apparently a 'wheeler', a 'dealer', a 'woman stealer', a 'bruiser', a 'cruiser' and a 'rockin' rollin' man'. That James Blunt has a lot to answer for.

Find on iTunes Find It: 'Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap', 1976.
  • SHOOT TO THRILL

Brian 'Beano' Johnson is a man of simple tastes: his 'gun' here is a 'penis' that he likes to 'fire at will'. Phew, that's alright then.

Find on iTunes Find It: 'Back In Black', 1980.
  • SIN CITY

A HEARTFELT paean to Las Vegas, Atlantic City or even Blackpool, 'Sin City' is a celebration of the high rolling lifestyle and the eternal optimism of the gambler in all of us.

Find on iTunes Find It: 'Powerage', 1978.
  • STIFF UPPER LIP

You might think as they hit 50 AC/DC might elevate their minds from the gutter: you'd be wrong. 'I was born with a stiff, a stiff upper lip,' wheezes Beano filthily. Dirty old bugger.

Find on iTunes Find It: 'Stiff Upper Lip', 2000.
  • THUNDERSTRUCK

One of the great AC/DC intros: one string widdling from Angus, a gang of yobs hollering 'THUN-DUH!' and an animalistic drum beat. Watch 'em do it on the 'Live At Donington' DVD and then say you don't 'get' AC/DC.

Find on iTunes Find It: 'The Razor's Edge', 1990.
  • TOUCH TOO MUCH

ROCK STARS love sexual euphemisms. Why sing about cocks and fannies when you can sing about the satisfaction to be derived slipping a hand into a 'velvet glove'. Lovely.

Find on iTunes Find It: 'Highway To Hell', 1979.
  • WHOLE LOTTA ROSIE (LIVE)

Bon pulls a 42-39-56 'honey' and finds that the bigger the cushion, the sweeter the pushin', the looser the waistband, the deeper the quicksand, etc. We've all been there, eh?

Find on iTunes Find It: 'If You Want Blood...', 1978.
  • YOU SHOOK ME ALL NIGHT LONG

let's cut to the bone: she didn't 'shake' him all night long, she fucked him. And he liked it.
