Guns N' Roses
Guns N' Roses

TAKING AN altogether grittier and sleazier approach to the bubble-gum glam, spandex and big hair that was dominating rock in the late '80s, Guns N'Roses ploughed through the LA rock scene leaving a trail of trashed venues, empty Jack Daniel's bottles and gobsmacked punters. Their iconic debut album courted controversy from the off when MTV refused to play any of their songs because of its offensive cover art. So the artwork was changed and, at the request of Guns record label president, MTV played the video for 'Welcome To The Jungle' once, at 2am. Within 24 hours it was the most-requested video on MTV and Guns N'Roses became 'The Most Dangerous Band On The Planet'. There followed legendary tales of debauchery, alcoholism, overdoses, inter-band fighting, huge world tours, riots, overblown double-albums and one enormous ego. Still an ongoing concern and with a scheduled Download appearance, Axl Rose remains the only original member of the group. The much talked about 'Chinese Democracy' album, which has been more than 10 years in the making, is, apparently "imminent". Watch this space...

Appetite for Destruction
Name: Appetite for Destruction Label: GEFFEN Year: 1987

Review: A GENUINE rock classic and one of the greatest albums of the last 20 years. The original cover art (featuring a robotic rapist) was banned and had to be used as the inlay instead. It was loud, nasty, caused public outcry and sold over 25 million copies. It encapsulated everything about the sleazy LA underground for those who couldn't, or didn't want to, be there themselves.

Use Your Illusion II
Name: Use Your Illusion II Label: GEFFEN Year: 1991

Review: DECRIED BY many as being too leaden and lumpy, the '...Illusion' series is at turns balladic, bluesy, experimental and peppered with genius. Axl Rose discovered politics ('Civil War'), romance ('Estranged') and, er, twatting about on synthesisers ('My World'). The accompanying world tour saw cancellations, inter-band fighting, personnel changes and riots. Their reputation as the most dangerous band on the planet grew daily.

Use Your Illusion I
Name: Use Your Illusion I Label: GEFFEN Year: 1991

Review: WITH THEIR scope widened, part one of the '...Illusion' series cemented Guns as stadium rock icons. There were huge ballads ('Don't Cry'), orchestral behemoths ('November Rain') and an appearance from Alice Cooper ('The Garden'). Brian May played with them at Wembley. Elton John played at the MTV video awards with them. They were megastars. Nothing could go wrong, surely?

Gn'R Lies
Name: Gn'R Lies Label: GEFFEN Year: 1988

Review: A STOPGAP between albums, 'Lies' is four acoustic tracks tacked on to GN'R's previous 'Live Like A Suicide' EP; but what acoustic tracks. The four live cuts showcase the shit-kicking rock 'n' roll that made 'Appetite...' such a huge seller while the gentler, more reflective (though no less controversial) acoustic material worked as pointers towards the broader songwriting approach used on the '...Illusion' set.

The Spaghetti Incidence
Name: The Spaghetti Incidence Label: GEFFEN Year: 1993

Review: ORIGINALLY CONCEIVED as a punk covers album this patchy affair documents Guns N'Roses' take on everyone from the Misfits to Soundgarden, by way of The Damned, T Rex and nefarious serial killer Charles Manson. To say it was hit and miss would be generous. With that god-awful cover art this ill-advised stinker stands out a mile as something of a bargain-bucket staple.

    Key Guns N' Roses Tracks
  • AIN'T IT FUN

THIS COVER of The Dead Boys' classic is a diamond among coals on the much-maligned 'Spaghetti Incident'.

  • ATTITUDE

ANOTHER cover, this time from Goth punk icons The Misfits. The ragged voice of bassist Duff McKagan suits this blitzkrieg stomp perfectly.

  • CIVIL WAR

"WHAT WE'VE got here is failure to communicate." The quote that begins the song (from 'Cool Hand Luke') fits this sensitively wrought anti-war song. It could also sum up the internal problems the band were having at this point.

  • COMA

A GARGANTUAN prog-rock masterpiece that starts with a heartbeat and ends with the flatline sound of a cardiograph machine. The doctors' voices that can be heard through the song are the doctors who saved Rose following an overdose.

  • DON'T CRY

FEATURING LATE Blind Melon frontman Shannon Hoon on backing vocals this touching ballad is allegedly the first song the band ever wrote.

  • ESTRANGED

ANOTHER involved, cinematic masterpiece that clocks in at over nine-minutes. A turbulent break-up is the basis for the story but with so much musicality at work it could have been about anything.

  • GET IN THE RING

THIS RANT against a career's worth of press criticism (which names, among others, former K! scribe Mick Wall) quickly became a fan favourite for its stirring 'us and them' invective.

  • KNOCKIN' ON HEAVEN'S DOOR

AFTER PLAYING it at the Freddie Mercury tribute concert at Wembley in 1992 this Bob Dylan cover became Guns' biggest hit, reaching Number Two in the charts.

  • LIVE AND LET DIE

COVER VERSIONS would eventually come back to haunt them but this riotous blast through the Paul McCartney penned James Bond theme tune saw them hit the British Top 5 again.

  • MR BROWNSTONE

A SLANG term for heroin, 'Mr Brownstone' is a raucous, though surprisingly cautionary tale about the dangers of addiction. The whole band were, of course, listening attentively.

  • NICE BOYS

'DON'T PLAY rock 'n' roll!' No shit. This rowdy rebel yell from 'Lies' (a cover of Aussie rockers Rose Tattoo) showed what everyone already knew: Guns N'Roses were not nice boys.

Find on iTunes Find It: 'GN'R Lies', 1988.
  • NOVEMBER RAIN

GRANDIOSE, SWAGGERING nine-minute orchestral majesty with a glorious OTT finale. Still holds the record for the longest guitar solo ever to make the American Top 10.

  • ONE IN A MILLION

REFERENCING 'FAGGOTS', 'niggers', 'immigrants' spreading disease and railing on the police, this was perhaps not Mr Rose's most humanitarian lyrical creation. Somewhat amazingly it's a love song and would be beautiful but for the unfortunate content.

  • PARADISE CITY

SOME SAY it refers to the lure of LA sleaze, others say it's another thinly veiled drug reference. What is known for certain is that if Slash's appeal for the lyrics to be changed to '...where the girls are fat and they got big titties' had been successful then it wouldn't have been quite the same.

  • PATIENCE

THE WHISTLED intro and acoustic jangling was a huge swerveball but the inherent tenderness in Rose's lyrics saw it go Top 10 over here and Top 5 in America.

  • ROCKET QUEEN

POSSIBLY THE sleaziest six minutes on 'Appetite...', 'Rocket Queen' has a huge chorus, monster riffs and the sound of Axl Rose shagging a stripper in the studio. How many takes it took to get the orgasmic screaming sounding right is unknown.

  • SWEET CHILD O' MINE

THAT RIFF kicks in, you get goosebumps like the first time you heard it and you simply have to stop whatever you're doing and stand there grinning. This song is responsible for thousands picking up a guitar... real or air.

Find on iTunes Find It: 'Appetite For Destruction', 1987.
  • USED TO LOVE HER

TONGUE FIRMLY planted in cheek, Axl Rose sings of an ex-love he had to bump off because 'she bitched so much'. It caused a few outcries from the moral majority but was dwarfed controversy-wise by other songs on the album.

Find on iTunes Find It: 'GN'R Lies', 1988.
  • WELCOME TO THE JUNGLE

THE OPENING track on their earth-shattering debut full-length is a howl straight from the LA underground. The story goes that the famous 'You know where you are? You're in the jungle, baby. You're gonna diiiiiieeeee!' line came from an LA bum that accosted the band in their early days.

  • YOU COULD BE MINE

THE FIRST single from the '...Illusion' set saw Axl's mob in fine, shit-kicking form. Originally written during the 'Appetite For Destruction' sessions, 'You Could Be Mine' appeared in the 'Terminator 2' movie but not on the soundtrack despite Arnie himself appearing in the video.
