Green Day's Billie Joe Armstrong: “Rock Has Lost Its Balls… We’re Gonna Teabag All These Mother F*ckers”

Following yesterday's announcement of Green Day's long-awaited new album Father Of All…, frontman Billie Joe Armstrong has posted a statement regarding the record and how it's the band cutting "through the bullshit".

"This record is The New!" he says. "Soul, Motown, glam and manic anthemic. Punks, freaks and punishers! The Dirty messy. The Stink. The lyrics are like a party and lifestyle of not giving a fuck. The life and death of the party. Not political. Surviving in chaos. The real shit.

"Me, Mike Dirnt and Tré Cool of the Green Day cut through the bullshit. That’s how it’s always been for us. Everything else is fake. Frauds I tell ya!!

"Rock has lost its balls. We’re gonna teabag all these mother fuckers. The baddest rock band on the planet that gives a shit. “Glorious” or “glorious anarchy” seems to be the word that keeps coming up that reflects dancing, tribalism, anxiety, joy, violence, drugs, booze. Dangerous songs for dangerous kids!

"Our motto?? 'Nothing says fuck you like a unicorn.'"

Speaking to Zane Lowe on Apple Music’s Beats 1, frontman Billie Joe Armstrong said yesterday of both the song and the record: “Well, we recorded an album and it’s called Father of All… its song title is also that. It’s got a unicorn on the cover. It’s rainbow, bright. It’s got a horn and it’s got funny eyes. Yeah, we made a new record and we’re really excited, it’s only 26 minutes long, so it’s the shortest record we’ve made, I think since Dookie or Insomniac.”

He also says of the tone of Father…: “There’s a lot of depression, but with a sense of humour. But also just kind of the way the world works right now where everything is, I think it’s just, we live in just the time of complete and total chaos – or else we’ve always been, but now it’s turned up to Trump. So it’s just trying to reflect what’s going on. And it’s not really writing like political songs, but just writing stuff that, just the shit that you see every day. [American Idiot was the] good old days. Remember when we just had two wars going on? It’s like, ‘Yeah.’ Anyways, yeah, the we live definitely in the craziest of times right now.”
