Donald Trump supporters have been soundtracking their TikTok videos with Green Day's American Idiot – without understanding what the band stand for…
Many TikTok users have been reacting to the use of Green Day's American Idiot in pro-Donald Trump videos.
The response seems to follow a recent video by @ckettle_3 in particular, in which the TikToker focusses on the line 'One nation controlled by the media' from the smash single and refers to CNN, MSNBC, ABC and Fox as "hearing only what's on their agenda". The video – while still being soundtracked by the song – then brings up the words, "Wake up!" and "Socialism", while a caption reads: “Green Day knew it all along, since 2004!”
Fans have been quick to shut down this pro-Trump interpretation of the anti-Bush protest hit, even splicing footage of Billie Joe Armstrong famously chanting 'No Trump / No KKK / No facist USA' as Green Day performed at the 2016 American Music Awards in their videos.
Last year, the frontman also urged followers to register to vote, writing that he "wholeheartedly" backed Joe Biden for president, and Kamala Harris for vice president.
"I have not a single reservation in my mind," Billie Joe stated. "All of my enthusiasm is for Biden/Harris! Trump has got to go. America cannot afford another four years of Trump in office. Our democracy is at stake. Our earth is at stake. We need health care for all. We need justice. We need peace. We need police reform."
