Mark Hoppus Reveals The Meaning Behind blink-182’s New Album Title

Why is blink-182’s eighth album called Nine?

Yesterday (July 25), blink-182 announced that their upcoming album will be called Nine… despite it being their eighth album. Had Mark or Travis miscounted? Is there a hidden album we don’t know about? Are blink just massive Slipknot fans?

Well, no.

Mark Hoppus took to Reddit last night to address just why blink-182 had named their eighth album Nine.

NINE. This is our ninth album, as decided by me and travis,” reads the post. Some count buddha, some not. Some count the mark tom and travis show. Some count greatest hits. Some count dogs eating dogs. I’m counting buddha, cheshire cat, dude ranch, enema of the state, toypaj, untitled, neighborhoods, califronia, and now NINE

Nine is also the number of universal love. and the number of Uranus. remember to like and smash that subscribe button, or whatever it is the kids say now.”

So there you have it, blink-182 do in fact have nine albums! And you can’t argue with it because that’s what Mark thinks about it.

Speaking exclusively to Kerrang! about the upcoming album, Mark said that he wanted to return to the mentality of blink’s Untitled album.

After playing in this band for 27 years, I want to push it and do different things and take blink to places where we haven’t been before,” he explained. We’re really trying to do that on the new record. We want to do with our band what we did in 2003 with Untitled, where we take our foundations and go off in completely weird directions.”

Listen to new track Darkside now.

Nine will be released via Columbia Records on September 20.
