Metallica's Lars Ulrich Reveals Who Would Play His Dream Festival

Lars Ulrich is no stranger to the complicated ins-and-outs of festivals, having helped put on Metallica's excellent Orion Music + More events in 2012 and 2013 (“We’ve had the idea of doing our own lifestyle festival with lots of diverse music and fun and games for years…” he said at the time). Now, though, the drummer has taken part in The Guardian's My Fantasy Festival franchise and pondered his absolute dream event.
With money, location and even history itself being no object, Lars would have a fantastically diverse line-up planned from a wide range of eras: Bon Scott's AC/DC would headline the fest, and they'd be joined on the bill by Deep Purple "in their Gillan, Glover, Blackmore line-up from 1971 to 1973", Rage Against The Machine, Oasis "in their heyday", Guns N' Roses "at their most dangerous", and the late ’70s iteration of Bob Marley And The Wailers.

He adds that Easter Island would be the location of his festival – with fans being able to go via "boat, plane or relocation pod, like in Star Trek" – and Mediterranean/Middle Eastern food would be on the menu to keep everyone fuelled throughout the day. Yep, we could see ourselves having a lovely ol' time at that…

Back in non-fantasy land, Metallica will be streaming a new live set at drive-in venues throughout America on August 29.
“It’s great to be playing again, great to be back together with the fellas,” Lars told Kerrang! last week.
“There weren’t as many people as we’re used to, but the joy of playing together and getting the chance to play at any level kind of supersedes any of that. So now we’re just riding high on the fact that it’s still possible to connect with each other at the moment. We’ll get it into the drive-ins, see what happens, then continue to experiment and reach as many fans as possible in the best ways we can. And it was good to get out of the house!”
