Nirvana: Krist Novoselic hints at 30th anniversary reissue of Nevermind

Bassist Krist Novoselic reveals that he and Dave Grohl are putting together” a 30th anniversary release for Nirvana’s Nevermind at the moment.

With Nirvanas iconic Nevermind celebrating its 30th anniversary this coming September, bassist Krist Novoselic has confirmed that something will be done to mark the occasion.

Though the musician is keeping plans under wraps right now, Krist tells Uncut (via NME) that he and Dave Grohl are working on the record’s reissue right now.

We’re going to have the 30-year Nevermind, but we’re still putting it together,” he says. It’s kind of late! What’s on it? You’ll see, I don’t want to spoil the surprise!”

Krist adds of the significance of Nevermind turning 30: The anniversary is really for the fans and what the album means to them. If it helps people make some sense of the world, that’s great. You have to figure it out for yourself, though.”

In October last year, Garbages Butch Vig – who produced Nevermind – pondered that the album might not have been as successful were it released in the modern day.

I think it would be tough to repeat that zeitgeist moment,” he explained. If Nevermind came out this week, despite being a great record, it would not have the same cultural impact. It was perfect timing coming out when there was a shift in music and it felt like a revolution. I can see that happening again, but not in the same way.”

Butch continued of the effect that culture can have on how well an album or band does: Everything is so instant that it’s hard to build up some mystique. When you really want something but can’t quite get your hands on it, that makes it all the more powerful. Everyone has access to everything these days. Maybe someone will come along with a band who sounds like Nirvana but a lyricist who writes like Bob Dylan and is into hip-hop and doesn’t have Instagram or Facebook.

Maybe they’ll do a couple of shows and disappear. If they did, people would go mental because they’d want them all the more. If you know who that is, please call them because I want to produce them!”
