Original American Idiot Broadway Cast Sing 21 Guns For Show's 10th Anniversary

To celebrate the 10-year anniversary of Green Day's huge musical adaptation of American Idiot, the original Broadway cast have come together (well… in their separate homes) to perform a virtual rendition of 21 Guns.

The GRAMMY and Tony-award winning show opened on Broadway on April 20, 2010, following its initial run at Berkeley Rep's Roda Theatre from September 4 to November 15, 2009. In commemoration of this huge milestone, members of the cast including John Gallagher Jr., Rebecca Naomi Jones, Michael Esper, Christina Sajous, Mary Faber and Stark Sands met up virtually to cover smash single 21 Guns, which is taken from Green Day's 2009 album 21st Century Breakdown.

While Billie Joe Armstrong had also appeared in the Broadway run as St. Jimmy, the frontman doesn't appear in this 10-year anniversary performance. He did, however, share the clip on his Instagram, writing: "Broadway Idiots. I have so much love for all of these people. Here’s a special rendition of 21 Guns."

He added in a separate post celebrating the musical's anniversary, "It’s hard to believe that 10 years ago American Idiot musical debuted on Broadway. Not in my wildest imagination… to all the cast and crew!! All my rage and love."

John Gallagher Jr., who played Johnny, also posted: "It’s hard to believe 10 years have come and passed since Green Day’s American Idiot opened on Broadway. It was a fiery and all consuming thing that I threw myself into with wild abandon. I’m forever grateful to be a part of it and I cherish all the gifts it has given me throughout the decade. Happy anniversary to my idiot family! Rage and love forever and ever."

Not only is this goosebump-inducing performance a suitably uplifting watch for lockdown, but the video also encourages donations to the Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS COVID-19 Emergency Assistance Fund, which you can donate to here.
