The Pixies’s New Video Is A Supernatural Acid Fantasy

Watch the psychedelic new video by seminal indie rockers Pixies.

There’s always been a darkness surrounding the Pixies. Even in their most plunky, poppy moments, the band entertains certain themes that are steeped in the shadowier parts of the human soul. But in their new video, On Graveyard Hill, the band don’t hint at or touch on these elements — they swallow five tabs of LSD and dive right in.

On Graveyard Hill follows a young woman in a retro-drenched world taking a ride in a hearse to meet a popular psychic. When she gets there, though, and gets her palm read, she’s immersed in a parade of trippy and terrifying imagery that smacks of horror films like Beyond The Black Rainbow, Hereditary, The Nun, and Mandy. All throughout, Black Francis intones lyrics about being slowly bewitched by a sorceress on a graveyard hill. The whole thing feels spooky and exciting while somehow never venturing into full-on cheese.

According to director Kii Arens, Directing for the all mighty Pixies is quite an honor, and I was given complete artistic freedom to do what I wished. The freedom to do so makes sense as to why they are such an original, real deal band. I started my career in music creating rock art so it’s perfect for this psychedelic freak-out video release.”
