This Is What It Would Sound Like If blink-182 Wrote Green Day's American Idiot

Green Day's American Idiot in the style of old-school blink-182? Hell yeah.

This Is What It Would Sound Like If blink-182 Wrote Green Day's American Idiot

Green Day and blink-182 have long been considered two of the biggest titans of pop-punk… but what would it sound like if they merged?

Well, YouTuber SugarpillCovers has kind of answered that question, reimagining Green Day's 2004 smash single American Idiot as if it was actually written by Tom DeLonge, Mark Hoppus and Travis Barker in the first place. The cover still has Billie Joe Armstrong's signature vocals, but the instrumentation underneath is unmistakably old-school style blink – and it works incredibly well.

Neither band especially sounds like that these days, of course, with Green Day opting for a raw blend of rock'n'roll with "soul, Motown and glam" on their forthcoming album Father Of All…, while blink-182's just-released record NINE takes a much more mature route than the likes of Enema Of The State or Take Off Your Pants And Jacket.

Brilliant stuff.

Green Day performed American Idiot over the weekend at the iHeartRadio Festival in Las Vegas, switching out the lyrics to call out America's current president, Donald Trump.

Instead of singing, ‘I’m not a part of the redneck agenda,’ Billie Joe changed the words to, ‘I’m not a part of the MAGA agenda,’ of course referring to Trump’s infamous Make America Great Again slogan.

Speaking to Kerrang! recently, the frontman revealed that there would be some political nods in his lyrics for Green Day's new music – but nothing explicitly about Trump.

“I mean, I draw no inspiration from the President of the United States, because he’s just… there’s nothing,” he said. “Trump gives me diarrhoea (laughs), you know? I don’t want to write a song about it!"
