If, like us, you spend most of your waking hours listening to music or simply enjoy the high-pitched hum of our old friend tinnitus, there’s a good chance the ASMR phenomenon will have passed you by.

ASMR – or autonomous sensory meridian response, if you want to get picky – is a physical sensation characterised by a tingling sensation in your scalp and upper spine.

Of course, there’s a thriving community of gentle thrill-seekers on YouTube, with videos featuring soft whispers, nail tapping and chewing crunchy food.

Paramore vocalist Hayley Williams hopped on the near-silent bandwagon in a bid to plug her Good Dye Young semi-permanent hair dye.

“Somewhere there’s a list of things I won’t do for @gooddyeyoung brand awareness,” Hayley tweeted. “Apparently ASMR wasn’t on that list. I’m so sorry.”

If the sound of whispering doesn’t make your eye twitch, this four-minute video features Hayley munching on a dill pickle-flavoured Kettle Chip, slurping a drink, an unboxing section with quiet commentary and all sorts of barely-there auditory treats, plus a guest appearance from her goldendoodle dog Alf.

We're off to listen to some metal at an ear-splitting volume now. Um, thanks for that.
