Watch The First Trailer For The New Trent Reznor-Scored Musical Drama, Waves

The first trailer for Waves, scored by Nine Inch Nails’ Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross, will break your heart.

Last year, Nine Inch Nails masterminds Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross announced they would be scoring a new music drama”. Given NIN’s general tenor, one might assume that the film would be a bleak, crushing story about darkness and doom. But the first trailer for the movie, titled Waves, has been released, and while it’s definitely got its more heartbreaking moments, it feels much more human than one might expect.

The film, directed by Trey Edward Shults — probably known to metal and rock fans for his psychological horror film It Comes At Night — is touted as a coming-of-age tale that tells two contrasting teen love stories, focusing on both suburban teenagers and their parents.”

Whoa. Suffice it to say, this is not typical Nine Inch Nails material…but at the same time, it looks pretty great. And honestly, if a movie has Sterling K. Brown in it, we’ll watch it, no questions asked.

That said, Trent and Atticus have definitely worked on a pretty diverse body of movies together. The team won an Academy Award for their work on The Social Network, and have also created original scores for such fims as Bird Box and Jonah Hill’s mid90s. Meanwhile, they’re currently working on the score for a Pixar animated movie about souls, so hey, why not add a tear-jerking family drama to the mix?

This also isn’t the only time when Nine Inch Nails’ music has stepped into the spotlight of late. Earlier this year, Miley Cyrus performed a re-vamped pop version of the NIN classic Head Like A Hole for an episode of Black Mirror. The hilarious (if a little disturbing) revamp of the song inspired a limited-edition T‑shirt, to be worn only on the most uplifting of morning runs.

Waves will come out November 1st, via A24.
