Creeping Death Go Truly Underground In Cavernous New Video

Exclusive: The new video by Texas death metallers Creeping Death descends into untold depths.

One thing can be said about Creeping Death: they're committed to their name. The Texan death metal crew may have adopted with a more searing, thrash-focused sound early on with the output on 2018's Specter Of War. But on the material from their upcoming new album Wretched Illusions, the band are exploring a moldier, more clammy-to-the-touch sound that oozes and lumbers as much as it rips. It's this sort of commitment to sonic devolution that earned them their spot opening for High On Fire and Power Trip later this year.

The video for the band's latest track, Ripping Through Flesh, is a visual illustration of that fungal growth. The video definitely has a narrative of bloodlust and escape that runs throughout it, complete with a machete-wielding psychopath. But more than that, it's the cave that surrounds the band during the performance shots -- complete with dripping rock formations and pitch-black crevices a every turn -- that truly grips the viewer and drives home the band's newfound aural grossness.

Kerrang! spoke to frontman Reese Alavi about what went into creating such a shadowy vignette:

What's the vision behind the video? What's the narrative behind it?

Ripping Through Flesh is in essence a song about warring in an MMORPG game called RuneScape. If you put the video games aside, though, it’s about several nations sending a small group of elite warriors to an infamous cave rich in resources in an effort to make their way through a dark time in humanity. It’s all fantasy-based. We wanted a bit of gore/fantasy/and violence so that’s what we got.

Where was the video shot? How was shooting inside of a cave?

It was shot partly in the Wonder Caves in San Marcos, Texas, and the Cave Without A Name in Boerne, Texas.

Did you encounter any wildlife -- bats, lizards, your usual cave-dwellers?

In San Marcos the cave also doubled as an adventure park so they had a petting zoo with toucans and stuff. Other than that, we saw some bugs but that’s about it!
