Album review: Covet – catharsis

Cali math-rockers Covet go on a wondrous journey on catharsis…

Album review: Covet – catharsis

Playing out like a series of mini soundtracks to an array of sci-fi and fantasy films, the latest album from California’s Covet is a lesson in how bands don’t always need a virtuoso vocalist in order to deal in vivid storytelling. Across the eight tracks that make up catharsis, guitarist and occasional singer Yvette Young is supported by new additions Brandon Dove (bass) and Jessica Burdeaux (drums) in delivering a snappy, sub-30-minute collection of proggy, experimental tunes that, if you’re willing to give them time, offer a truly rewarding listen.

Opening track coronal makes it clear from the outset that catharsis will be somewhat of an acquired taste, as the song builds to a cacophony of noise that, while perhaps lacking in genuine hooks, reels you in thanks to the way Yvette’s interesting guitar work is offset by Jessica’s rampant drumming. Second song firebird is entirely different, taking a more carefree, fun-filled tone, while vanquish introduces yet more enticing guitar playing that really ramps up the science-fiction qualities of the music.

The greatest strength of catharsis, though, lies where you’d least expect it. The album’s fifth track, simply titled interlude, is anything but your typical mid-LP pause. Not just a throwaway minute of melody that allows you to catch your breath, this is a song in its own right, and a bloody good one at that, where some fantastic piano work leads into a track that that provides an engaging link between the record’s two halves. It sets the scene well for catharsis to build to its closing number lovespell, whose gorgeous guitar tone lends a spellbinding quality to the record’s climax.

An excellent display of musicianship and songwriting, we all Covet music this good.

Verdict: 4/5
