Listen to Undeath’s “fast as sh*t, bouncy” new single, Disputatious Malignancy
With just under a month to go until they drop their third album, Undeath have shared new single Disputatious Malignancy…
Hotly-tipped New York brutalists Undeath unleash skull smashing old school death metal...
There are very few death metal records being released in the 21st Century that still possess the insane loudness and intensity that cause you to recoil from the speaker upon first pressing play. Thankfully, Undeath are one of those precious few.
Second album It’s Time…To Rise From The Grave hits with the satisfying impact of a sucker punch to the jaw right from the get-go. Their particular brand of death hearkens back to the glory days of the early '90s when Cannibal Corpse reigned supreme, and it’s this influence that’s most apparent. The production is predictably murky, however, the guitars cut through the swampiness allowing them to be a focal point alongside vocalist Alexander Jones’ bassy growls. Foregoing blast beats in favour of playing at a restrained mid-range tempo allows for their surprisingly technical riffs to really shine and, thankfully, there are plenty of them.
Undeath also harness the power of brevity, with most tracks hovering around the three-minute mark. Instead of noodling for 15 minutes and outstaying their welcome, as lots of modern death metal bands are prone to doing. They know exactly when to wrap up a song and leave their listeners hungry for more, taking a stranglehold on your attention from beginning to end.
It’s Time…To Rise From The Grave is a powerful album that will doubtless see 2022 become the year that that Undeath are recognised as one of the genre’s best contemporary bands.
Verdict: 4/5
