Canadian emo quintet Rarity have always pushed things to extremes, as evidenced by the band's vicious single Shawnigan that was released this February. Now, the band are back with a new single titled Drown Me Out, accompanied by an unhinged music video.

On Drown Me Out, Rarity climb an uphill slope in their existential journey, exploring death, nihilism, and all types of darkness, and growing increasingly agitated as they do so. The track reverberates with a haunting sense of volatility, interspersed with quiet moments and bursts of aggression. The tragedy best manifests in the confessional chorus: “Everything I am is unpredictable and profound / There is no one here, you’ll have to drown me out / Everything that makes me happy is buried beneath the ground.” The video, meanwhile, resides in the disorienting, unrestrained world of one of their gigs, showing just how these feelings of confusion and disassociation come to life in the form of Rarity's explosive live show.

Watch Drown Me Out below and let the black and white chaos engulf you:

As furious as the song sounds, the message isn’t entirely dispirited. According to the band, “Drown Me Out is about preserving the things that make you happy despite having to deal with recently deceased loved ones and the end of other projects that you found solitude in. Channeling your negative emotions and turning them into something positive. Those important things in your life may be gone but that doesn’t mean you can’t create something beautiful despite the absence of what used to make you happy."

Rarity worked with Derek Henderson (Knuckle Puck, Real Friends) and Derek Discanio (State Champs) for their tumultuous debut LP, I Couldn’t Be Weaker. Their sound ranges from defeated emo on tracks like Exhale to corrosive pop punk via songs like Palette. Their sophomore record, The Longest Lonesome, is out August 30th via New Damage Records.
