This bluegrass cover of Megadeth's Symphony Of Destruction is actually pretty damn good - and very unexpected.

Novelty covers are a dime a dozen these days – and even the bad ones can be a useful distraction from the drudgery of day-to-day existence, as well as an escape from the political dystopia that seems prevalent everywhere these days.

Bluegrass covers are nothing new, of course. Hayseed Dixie’s first album was a record of bluegrass covers of AC/DC songs, and the band have made an entire career out of bluegrassified tunes.

Now, bluegrass outfit DD And The Butterlovers have covered Megadeth’s Symphony Of Destruction – possibly the most unbluegrass-esque song ever written – and it’s really quite good.

Fronted by Canadian country musician Dan Davidson, DD And The Butterlovers aren’t strangers to reworking popular songs. Like literally everyone else these days, they’ve covered Billie Eilish’s Bad Guy and a host of other artists that largely come from the pop world, such as Shawn Mendes and Cyndi Lauper.

This song is by far the heaviest song they've covered, though – so far, at any rate. We can’t quite pinpoint exactly why this one works so well, but there’s definitely more to it than just novelty.

The original version of the song was released on Megadeth’s 1992 album, Countdown To Extinction, and – obviously – is infinitely more brutal than this new version.

Later this month, on October 13, Megadeth’s inaugural cruise will begin. It sets sail from the port of Los Angeles for five days and nights. Other bands set to induce some heavy metal mayhem on the ship include Anthrax, Queensrÿche, Suicidal Tendencies, Death Angel, Testament, DragonForce, Overkill and Corrosion Of Conformity.

But that’s not all. the cruise – which will have two full days at sea – will also feature performances by Sacred Reich, Toothgrinder, DevilDriver, Phil Campbell And The Bastard Sons, Doro, Armored Saint, John 5, Metal Church, Danko Jones, Beasto Blanco and Matalachi.

Oddly. Megadeth tribute band MacaniX will also be on the boat. DD And The Butterlovers won’t be, however. Maybe next year.
