Canadian experimental droners BIG|BRAVE have been leaving lasting impressions recently in the world of avant-garde music. The band is beginning to gear up for the release of their latest album, A Gaze Among Them, dropping on May 10th via Southern Lord Recordings -- and they have revealed their new video for the single Holding Pattern today.

Vocalist Robin Wattie says, “The song is about “colonization through missionaries, and the whitewashing of blood and name and thus body/culture. It's about white folks navigating all matters of race by taking up space/time/air, by taking up platforms, ergo, ultimately making it about themselves and their guilt.”

Check it out right here:

This message is spread throughout a track that’s built as grandiose as something you’d expect from Godspeed You! Black Emperor, with the hypnotic vibe found in groups like Swans. It’s repetitive, but done so that it is absolutely captivating and has you on the edge of your seat on what the next move on the track will be for its nearly ten minute runtime. This is accompanied with an absolutely beautifully shot video, which Robin described as “loosely non-male folks taking back the streets/night. We are on high alert all the time - it'd be nice to be out in the world, especially at night, without needing to be hyper aware of every human body within eyesight and earshot, without being followed/attacked/harassed/raped/killed. Without an ounce of fear all the time. Imagine?”

As you watch the video, you will see this comes together with various shots that are accompanied by flashing lights, intertwining with the hypnotic repetition of the song. Both the track and the video are absolutely gorgeous, taking in all the elements that make experimental metal such an exciting incredible genre.

Since forming in 2012, the group has continually put out envelope-pushing drone metal, starting with their 2014 debut, Feral Verdure, and then continuing with Au De La and ARDOR. The group has also made their way around to performing with such notable acts like drone metal legends Sunn O))), experimental underground heroes The Body, and most recently completed a few dates with the great noise rockers Daughters.

If you dig what you hear and want more, be sure to preorder A Gaze Among Them, and to catch BIG|BRAVE at a show.
