Album review: Meryl Streek – Songs For The Deceased
Dublin-based punk Meryl Streek faces up to corruption and injustice on his darkly poetic and brutal second record
“I, along with many others, wouldn't be doing this music without Steve’s years of work and to have him on this track with me means a lot," Meryl Streek says as Crass' Steve Ignorant jumps aboard his new single Rotten Fruit.
Meryl Streek has announced a new album Stories They Don’t Teach You At School and shared its lead single Rotten Fruit, which features Trom and Steve Ignorant of punk legends Crass.
Stories They Don’t Teach You At School serves as the follow-up to 2024’s Songs For The Deceased and arrives on October 9 via Venn Records.
Rotten Fruit tackles the hopelessness that comes with watching the constant negativity being pumped out in the 24 hour news cycle, the strength of the media’s control and the epidemic of fake news.
“I, along with many others, wouldn't be doing this music without Steve’s years of work and to have him on this track with me means a lot,” Meryl says. “I think it turned out great and I hope Crass fans like it as much as Meryl Streek fans.”
Steve Ignorant describes the album as “kick in the arse and a smack in the face”, adding: “This album does what politicians don't - tell the truth”, while Meryl adds: “We’re not pre-warned about issues like depression, addiction, homelessness and cost of living. These are matters we’re forced to deal with later in life, with zero preparation”.
