Slayer's Gary Holt Slams Today's Rap Scene: "You’re Dumb, And I Hope You Run Out Of Money"

Gary Holt, guitarist for thrash icons Slayer, has shared his err... rather sweary thoughts on today's rap and hip-hop scene.

Hosting a clinic with Rock City Music Company, Gary was asked various questions by the audience, and as one thing led to another, the Slayer shredder decided to air his damning views of contemporary rap.

"Back in my day, rappers used to have rhythm. They actually used to be funky," said Gary, before adding that today's rappers are "not even in time; they don’t even rhyme. It’s fucked up."

Pointing to a fan in the crowd, Gary told the guy that if he wanted a career in music he should go "tattoo the fuck out of [his] face.

"You’ll be a fucking rap star. That’s what dudes looked like when they pass out on the bus – we’d Sharpie the fuck out of you. And now that’s what they look like on purpose. It’s crazy. They’re all fucking Sharpied up like Lil Xan and lil this and lil that.”

Gary continued his slating of modern hip-hop, blaming its rise on social media. He added that he's friends with some rappers and loves a lot of them, but the genre has always been about "‘Look what I’ve got. Look at my diamonds and shit.’

“I saw a news article – it was about some 18-year-old rapper who bought a Rolls-Royce so he could smash the windshields out and put it on Instagram. Alright, you’re a fucking asshole, you’re dumb, and I hope you run out of money and you’re fucking sucking dick behind a dumpster for money later. So, fuck you.”

Gary is known for his disdain for celebrity culture, often performing live in a t-shirt with the words 'Kill The Kardashians' on the chest. But it turns out, Kim and co. aren't really the problem.

"I don’t hate the Kardashians… I hate the people that have made them famous," said Gary in response to a fan question. "I hate the fact that people are so enamoured and fascinated with the glorious lifestyles of the rich and famous that they would elevate them to this status."

Slayer are currently on their farewell tour. Their final UK performance takes place at Download festival on June 14-16 – get your tickets now.
